00:00Jamie was a great guy. He was funny, smart, had a good soul, a good heart.
00:11I tell mommy we're really excited because we might get to go up and see her.
00:15Necky seemed like a nice girl.
00:18We were so happy for him.
00:20Say hi, daddy.
00:21But she was having to take pain medication.
00:24He was genuinely concerned.
00:26I don't think he ever imagined it, that he was gonna have to investigate his own life.
00:31Her personality was starting to change.
00:34He called and was telling me I was real nauseous and drowsy.
00:39We're here to check the welfare over James Cabela.
00:42Something is up. This woman is not acting right.
00:45She was going down a deep, dark path.
00:47It's weird. Think somebody got killed?
00:56Ladies and gentlemen, Roomsman James Cabela!
01:13This is Jimmy, my brother, being introduced as part of the wedding party.
01:20at my husband and I's wedding.
01:25Smiling, getting ready to start dancing, having a good time.
01:29All right, ladies and gentlemen, a round of applause for your bridal party.
01:33Jimmy was a great guy. He was funny, smart.
01:37He had a good soul, a good heart.
01:40Here is Nikki, being presented as Mrs. Capello.
01:49And she's a little shy at first.
01:54The month prior, they had just gotten married themselves and seemed like a happy couple.
02:00We were so happy for him.
02:02Nikki seemed like a nice girl.
02:04Yeah, it was nice to see Jimmy happy.
02:10Jimmy Capello is born on May 27, 1981, in Buffalo, New York.
02:16He was an ambitious kid, easy going.
02:20He was always pretty happy.
02:22He always laughed a lot.
02:24He was able to relate well with people.
02:27Played a little bit of sports.
02:29He liked cars.
02:31Jimmy was a goof.
02:35He can make people laugh.
02:38He can make people smile.
02:40If you're having a bad day, he can turn that right around for you.
02:46Unfortunately, Jimmy's parents' marriage breaks down while he and Jamie are still young.
02:52When he is 18, Jimmy and his mother leave New York State,
02:56eventually settling in Huntsville, Alabama.
03:01By that point, I was in nursing school.
03:04We would talk on the phone, and he was a talker.
03:08And thankfully, I was a listener.
03:11In 2006, a friend of Jimmy offers him a new career opportunity.
03:18Jimmy sort of fell into private investigation.
03:22It wasn't something that he reached out to.
03:25It sort of landed on his lap.
03:28He entertained it.
03:30Realized he was really good at it.
03:32Oh, I was excited for him.
03:34Jimmy was great at his job.
03:36He dove right into it.
03:38On June 16, 2008, Jimmy's personal life changes too.
03:44Jimmy met Nicky when he was 27 years old.
03:50He was riding his motorcycle and saw her on the corner.
03:57I think she was in the car, and I guess they locked eyes.
04:02He turned his motorcycle around and introduced himself.
04:06Jimmy was very excited to introduce Nicky to us.
04:11We flew into Alabama.
04:13Nicky ended up picking us up at the airport.
04:17She was so silly and so giddy and so nervous.
04:23She was studying nursing, and I was a nurse.
04:28It gave Nicky and I something to talk about instantly.
04:33They were happy, holding hands, hugging.
04:36I felt like she was a great person for him.
04:39I think he knew within himself that he was going to marry her,
04:45and he acted on that very quickly.
04:48Jimmy and Nicky got married in July 2010 in Huntsville, Alabama.
04:54Beautiful wedding.
04:55It's the end of the night, and it's time for them to depart.
05:09They're both on bikes.
05:13It was Jimmy's idea.
05:15Then Jimmy stops and does a burnout,
05:18and they're off in the sunset or the sun down.
05:24Just four weeks later,
05:29Jamie marries Florida-based firefighter Chris Weiss.
05:33Jamie was a groomsman at our wedding,
05:36and he was pretty good at keeping me calm.
05:40You know, here's another drink.
05:41Here's another drink.
05:42Just trying to relax, you know.
05:44It was a really good time.
05:46I was excited for him.
05:49I thought Chris was a great guy,
05:51and Jimmy was in love with Nicky.
05:55It was a good year.
05:56It was a good year for us.
05:59On August 5th, 2014,
06:01four years into their marriage,
06:03Nicky gives birth to a baby girl.
06:06They name her Riley.
06:08This is Riley as an infant.
06:11Hiccups and all.
06:14Diaper that's too big for her.
06:21And you can hear him saying shh
06:24and tapping her on the belly.
06:27Like, this could be okay.
06:29As Riley grows,
06:30Jimmy and Nicky balance parenting and work.
06:33I tell Mommy we're really excited
06:35because we might get to go up and see her.
06:38See her in work action.
06:41And work action.
06:44Say hi, Daddy.
06:46I'm helping Mommy cook
06:48because I can't be put down.
06:51Even when the other one was working,
06:53she was sending video clips of Riley to him.
06:56He was sending video clips of Riley to her.
06:59See, we tried FaceTiming you,
07:01but you didn't answer,
07:02so we're just going to send you a video.
07:04See, it's about bath time.
07:07Is that Riley?
07:09Can you say hi, Daddy?
07:11Say hi, Daddy.
07:13They were over the moon.
07:14Hi, Daddy.
07:16This is Christmas in Buffalo
07:23with the whole family,
07:25all the grandkids,
07:26excited about opening all their gifts.
07:29I think Riley was possibly about a year old.
07:35It was great to meet
07:37and keep the kids in contact with each other.
07:41But you are never prepared for
07:45how much money it takes to provide
07:48for another human being.
07:50I remember a visit up in Alabama.
07:58Riley was just a little bit older at this point.
08:01They were having a little bit of financial trouble.
08:05We helped them out a little bit.
08:07And I remember one afternoon,
08:10my brother was working,
08:12and Nikki suggested,
08:13hey, let's go to this outdoor mall.
08:15They have restaurants there.
08:16And I'll never forget one of the stores
08:19that we walked into,
08:22and she bought a watch.
08:24And the watch wasn't cheap.
08:26It caught me off guard.
08:29You're experiencing a little bit
08:31of financial hardship,
08:33but you bought something for yourself.
08:35I thought it was a little bit of a selfish move.
08:40I don't think Jimmy ever knew about that purchase.
08:45And it made me wonder what else he didn't know.
08:53What else she did without him knowing.
09:01Now with a growing family,
09:03Jimmy Capello throws himself into life
09:05as a father and husband.
09:07Where's that, Riley?
09:08But Jamie becomes aware
09:10of an ongoing problem of Nikki's.
09:13We would be walking together
09:16where she would, like,
09:18walk a little bit funny,
09:20make a little grimace.
09:23And I said, well, what's going on?
09:26Oh, it was an injury that occurred before.
09:29First time I asked Jimmy,
09:32he was genuinely concerned.
09:34He wants to figure out what's causing it.
09:37He's like, let's get massages done.
09:50Let's go for physical therapy.
09:53Let's exercise.
09:55We've got to figure this out.
09:57She was having to take pain medication.
10:01And my brother was concerned.
10:05She wasn't getting relief.
10:07Soon after, Jimmy's concerns turned to alarm.
10:11He discovers Nikki is leading a double life.
10:14He had found out that she opened up a bank account
10:18without him knowing different purchases that were made
10:23that he didn't know about
10:25and that she had contacted an ex of hers.
10:29So they started having some trust issues.
10:32In 2016, six years into their marriage,
10:36Jimmy finds a disturbing set of messages on Nikki's phone.
10:40He had found out that she had contacted a drug dealer.
10:44Now she's meeting people off the streets for pain medication.
10:49But even worse, in the message thread,
10:53she had asked this drug dealer,
10:55is it safe if my daughter is with me?
10:58Because I have my daughter with me.
10:59Jimmy was so upset.
11:02He put a quick halt to it.
11:04He's expressing this to me in a phone conversation
11:07that he's so confused.
11:10What do I do?
11:12I struggled with trying to find the right words
11:15to help him through this.
11:17As a mother, how could you in so many ways?
11:21I was furious. I was mad, right?
11:24For better or worse is a thing.
11:26But when you're willfully taking advantage of people
11:32and putting your child in danger,
11:34it's unacceptable.
11:36I started questioning if I even really knew who Nikki was.
11:41Maybe I didn't know her at all.
11:44But Jimmy still wanted to work on the relationship.
11:47They had a daughter.
11:49He still wanted this white picket fence
11:52and he wanted that with her.
11:54Nikki promises to make a change.
11:56But over the following months,
11:58other people start to notice strange behavior.
12:01She was falling asleep at work
12:04and she would leave the unit,
12:07not come back for some time.
12:10Manager pulled her into the office
12:13and they said,
12:14your behavior at work is concerning.
12:19You no longer have a job.
12:23She told Jimmy, but it was downplayed
12:27and it was more of the employer's fault
12:31than her fault.
12:34With his wife now out of work
12:36and their income slashed,
12:37Jimmy carries all the responsibility for his family.
12:41Jimmy worked 60, 70, 80 hours a week.
12:43Kim's gone for long hours.
12:46And on the cameras that they have inside their home,
12:48there's Nikki on the couch
12:50while Riley's unsupervised,
12:52just walking around the house,
12:53you know, doing what she wants,
12:55watching TV,
12:56getting into stuff.
12:58Been a fireman for 20 years
13:00and children left unsupervised.
13:03It can be a terrible thing.
13:06Dang it.
13:11You gonna do a cannonball?
13:12Mm-hmm.
13:17With Nikki under the influence
13:18of pain medication at home,
13:20Jimmy often has no choice
13:21but to bring Riley to work with him.
13:26You're silly.
13:28This was around the time
13:29when Jimmy was growing more concerned
13:33about Nikki.
13:36It was taking a toll on their marriage,
13:38trying to put all your energy
13:40in both ends of your life,
13:42your work life,
13:43and still trying to keep Riley stable.
13:46Much to Jimmy's relief,
13:48a glimmer of hope appears
13:49in the summer of 2017.
13:52Nikki gets this new position
13:54at this other hospital.
13:57She's gonna be a charge nurse
13:58and maybe even become a manager.
14:01She's excited.
14:03He's excited.
14:04Maybe this will help her.
14:06Nikki's pain seems to lessen
14:08and her new job quickly eases
14:10the couple's financial stress.
14:13The house that they were in,
14:14neighborhood I thought was getting
14:16a little bit sketchy in here.
14:18So they moved to a little
14:20upper-scale neighborhood.
14:22It was bigger house, bigger garage.
14:25With Nikki now working,
14:26Jimmy finds more time for himself.
14:29Plus dip is silver,
14:31and I can't get that off,
14:32so I'm gonna sand it off.
14:33We're probably gonna wrap
14:34the car because it's
14:35actually pretty bad.
14:36So at this point,
14:37Jimmy's moved on
14:38from motorcycles to cars.
14:40So he bought a Corvette.
14:41Riley, Riley.
14:42It's learning time, right?
14:44What is this?
14:45Engine.
14:47Engine.
14:48What is this?
14:49What is this?
14:51Supertarser.
14:54Yeah, and what is this?
14:56This is Riley spending time
14:58with her daddy in the garage,
15:00and he is quizzing her
15:03on the different parts of the car,
15:07asking her, what is this?
15:09She had a toy vehicle,
15:11and when he would be in the garage
15:14working on his car,
15:17he would also help her work on her car.
15:21There, now it's worked up.
15:25In April 2018,
15:2710 months after Nikki starts her new job,
15:30the family gather for a celebration.
15:32Nikki and Jimmy drove down to Florida
15:35for my grandkids' birthday.
15:38And we're sitting at the table,
15:40and Nikki's sitting across from me,
15:42barely able to keep her eyes open.
15:45She wasn't focused.
15:47She would be looking, looking through you.
15:50She didn't know where she was.
15:52Jimmy would say, let's go upstairs,
15:54and then, like, shuttle her off to bed,
15:56and then he would come down, sorry.
15:57She's just, you know,
15:58she took her medicine.
15:59It makes her tired.
16:00So, the boys' line had a couple beers
16:02at a local bar,
16:04and I remember sitting there on the couch,
16:08and the kids were in bed,
16:10and Nikki sat across.
16:13She never said a word.
16:15I don't think we spoke one word to each other.
16:20She couldn't keep her eyes open,
16:22and she was just on the couch, slumped over,
16:25breathing like eight times a minute.
16:29I knew what this was.
16:30I could see it.
16:32Her personality was starting to change.
16:35She wasn't that bubbly person anymore.
16:38She was going down a deep, dark path,
16:42and Jimmy was losing hope
16:44that he could actually fix this situation.
16:55When that visit was over with,
16:57he called me the next day,
17:00and I said, Jimmy, this is concerning.
17:04We're at a dangerous point now.
17:07And he says, Jamie, I know.
17:11I don't want to be like Dad.
17:13I don't want to go through divorce.
17:15I said, you have got to know what she is taking.
17:19I know it's breaking his heart.
17:22Now, I don't think he ever imagined it.
17:24He was going to have to investigate his own life,
17:27but he did.
17:29He was able to start documenting everything that she was doing.
17:33He starts sending me pictures of random things he's finding in her work bag.
17:43And he sent a picture of two pills, oxycodones.
17:51They were still in their original paper wrap.
17:55And I said, Jimmy, this is only a medication you can get from the hospital.
18:00I said, she stole that.
18:03That is not good.
18:06Jimmy finds drugs that are not typically used for abuse.
18:10Why in the world would she have a bottle of insulin?
18:15Why would she have a box of lancets?
18:20Lancets are used when you're a diabetic to get a little blood sample.
18:25I mean, this was a big puzzle.
18:28Summer 2018, the whole family gather in Huntsville for Riley's fourth birthday.
18:41The party was going great.
18:43Kids were having a blast.
18:45Come on, JJ.
18:47I just noticed Nikki was off.
18:51She didn't participate.
18:53I don't know if it was because she wasn't getting attention.
18:57It just seemed like there was an issue.
19:00She was irritable, getting short with Riley.
19:04Jimmy tries to get Nikki in a better mood.
19:08He tries to shove her into the baby pool, you know, as a joke.
19:13Get her wet.
19:14And, oh no, she didn't like that.
19:19She immediately went inside the house, went in the kitchen cupboard and took a pill.
19:29Jimmy is feeling all kinds of emotions, all kinds of desperation.
19:34He wandered her off the medications.
19:39In the following days, however, Nikki's behavior suddenly changes.
19:44He says, I went in her work bag.
19:47Not even an alcohol swab in her work bag.
19:51Nothing.
19:56At this point, I believe that Nikki was in fear and was trying to figure out a way around
20:06a situation.
20:07On September 11th, 2018, James Capello gets a worrying call from his son.
20:15He called and was telling me, he says, God, I felt horrible yesterday.
20:20I couldn't focus.
20:21I was real nauseous and drowsy.
20:24He was talking about the confusion.
20:27He was so confused.
20:28He said he couldn't even count money.
20:32He talked about how he fell down the stairs.
20:36I was set back.
20:39I was really surprised.
20:41He was fairly healthy.
20:42He never had really any issues.
20:46He said, I feel fine now.
20:49I said, well, you should go get checked out.
20:53Jimmy was convinced that Nikki was drugging him.
20:58He was so convinced that he said to me, Jamie, if anything happens to me,
21:05you are to get Riley.
21:08And I thought, that's ridiculous.
21:14I didn't believe that Nikki was drugging him.
21:18She is a nurse.
21:22After talking to his family, Jimmy returns to work.
21:28But a week later, he messages Jamie again.
21:32I was at work.
21:34I get a text message from Jimmy, a little after 10 o'clock at night.
21:39And it said, today sucked.
21:42I had another episode.
21:44I called him.
21:45And he answered the phone.
21:48And he was anxious.
21:51He couldn't form his words correctly.
21:55Nikki gets on the phone and I'm like, what is going on?
22:00And she said, what Jimmy is experiencing are classic signs of hypoglycemia.
22:09And I said, please, please, please take him to the doctor tomorrow.
22:13Please.
22:14She said, I will.
22:15I will.
22:16I'll take care of him.
22:17Jamie calls Jimmy first thing the following morning.
22:20He doesn't answer his phone.
22:21So I text her.
22:24I said, hey, how is he?
22:27She said, oh, he's doing fine.
22:29He woke up and he went off to work.
22:32So at this point, I'm thinking he's doing what he's doing.
22:38She's going to get him to the doctor and it was going to be okay.
22:42But despite what Nikki tells Jamie, Jimmy doesn't make it to work.
22:47His colleagues contact the police.
22:50The Huntsville Police Department first got a call about Jimmy from his coworkers,
22:55probably between 9 and midnight, Thursday night.
23:00Just saying that we'd like to do a welfare check.
23:03He's not been at work like he's supposed to be.
23:10What's up?
23:118013.
23:12Nobody's answering the door.
23:13So all the lights are on.
23:15Both cars in the driveway.
23:17Dog's barking his head off.
23:19Finally, they get some sort of remote doorbell thing where Nikki Capello answers.
23:23We're here to check the welfare over James Capella.
23:26This is his wife.
23:28And he's been missing.
23:30Can you come talk to us at the door, please?
23:32Hey.
23:33Sorry.
23:34I'm sorry.
23:35How long have y'all not heard from him?
23:37How long have y'all not heard from him?
23:38I saw him this morning at 5.
23:39My daughter went up at 9.
23:40And he was at home.
23:41And I assumed that he had been able to work with his coworkers.
23:44But apparently nobody has heard from him.
23:45All of his stuff is here.
23:46He would normally take anything.
23:47It's just odd.
23:49When can I file a missing person?
23:50You can now if you want.
23:51I may wait until tomorrow.
23:52See if he turns up.
23:53Okay.
23:54I don't know where he would have gone or anything like that.
23:55Okay.
23:56Well, like I said, if you want to file a missing person.
23:57I don't care.
23:58Make sure to check the person the person on YouTube.
23:59You don't care.
24:00We're talking about hijacked.
24:01I don't care about thenh.
24:14You can now, if you want.
24:15I may wait until tomorrow.
24:16If he turns up.
24:17Okay.
24:18So, I don't know where he would have gone or anything like that.
24:21Okay.
24:22Well, like I said, if you want to file a missing person, I know.
24:25If you want to file it now or if you want to wait, it's up to you.
24:28If not tonight, we'll get out of your hair and let you get back to sleep.
24:32She seemed completely unfazed that police were there in the middle of the night
24:35to say people are worried about your husband and we don't know where he is.
24:38It did not seem to ping her radar at all.
24:42It's weird.
24:43I think somebody got killed.
24:55The next day rolls around and I get a text message from my mom.
25:01Have you heard from Jimmy?
25:03He's missing.
25:05She said his car, his keys, his wallet, everything's at the house, but he's not there.
25:13I'm like, nobody's heard from him.
25:15This doesn't make any sense.
25:19I called Jimmy.
25:20He didn't answer.
25:22I called Nikki.
25:23She picked up the phone and I was like, Nikki, talk to me about this.
25:28Nikki didn't sound worried.
25:30She wasn't worried at all.
25:33I asked her, do we have the police department involved?
25:37She said that she was advised that it was best not to file a missing persons report yet.
25:44Not enough time has passed.
25:46I was so confused.
25:47And she said, Jamie, what if Jimmy doesn't come back?
25:55I have to worry about Riley and I.
25:58Her reactions were not normal for a husband that was missing.
26:01And I just said, I'll call you later.
26:04By mid-morning, with growing pressure from Jimmy's family and co-workers, Nikki finally calls in a missing persons report.
26:14But they sent another patrol officer out there just to check the house.
26:18Does James Capella live here?
26:22Nikki is at her mother's house.
26:26They can't communicate real well through the doorbell.
26:28Finally, he says, look, give me your number and I'll just call you.
26:30And he doesn't have anything going on where he may have gone out of town for something?
26:47After the patrol officer talks to her, he calls the missing persons detective and says, look, boss, I can't prove it, but something is up.
26:54This woman is not acting right.
26:56I kept in contact with Nikki, trying to figure out what everyone is doing, what she's doing.
27:05Nikki must have known that I wasn't getting the answers I wanted.
27:10I said, okay, I'm coming up.
27:14I'm leaving in the morning.
27:16The drive was long.
27:20I was calling the fire departments and going to get a search party together.
27:25I made a missing persons flyer.
27:28We thought maybe he just was confused and walked out the door, had another episode.
27:34So we were loading up like we're going to tromps through the woods.
27:37At the same time, I had flashbacks of these hypoglycemic episodes that Nikki herself diagnosed him of having.
27:46And I remember this picture of the insulin bottle, and Jimmy was saying that Nikki was drugging him.
27:59Insulin is used to moderate blood sugar levels in people who are diabetic.
28:05If someone was given insulin, who didn't need it, it could drop their blood sugar to a dangerous level.
28:13And so I asked Jamie, do you think she gave him insulin?
28:17With Jamie and Chris approaching from Florida, and James now flying in from Buffalo, police receive a shocking tip.
28:29Out of the blue, they get a call from this woman, and she says, hey, I know Jimmy Capello's wife, Nikki Capello.
28:36And she just called me and told me that she killed him with insulin and that his body is in her garage.
28:46As soon as he hears that, the investigator calls patrol and says, I need the closest unit to the house to go pull Nikki Capello out and sit on her until I get there.
28:56Nikki Capello comes out to the porch.
28:58In an effort to speed this up, would you mind if I checked yourself to make sure that your husband is not in the crawl space where he's working or something,
29:08or if he's upstairs and went into, like, an attic or something, and then he got him?
29:13Do you understand what I'm saying?
29:20Let me back up and be clear for you.
29:24When I arrived at the house, Nikki was sitting outside on the porch with the police.
29:52She saw me from the porch, but, um, there was no acknowledgement.
29:59You know, I had a lot of anger going through me, and I was all revved up and ready to knock the door down.
30:06Will you sit down and talk?
30:08Nope. I'll tell you what we're going to do.
30:10We're going to take a ride right now, and I am going to get a search warrant and take that.
30:14That way you don't feel pressured.
30:16Right now, I'm not feeling comfortable because I feel like you feel pressured.
30:19Investigators escort Nikki to CID.
30:24Someone's going to let me find out about my daughter, right?
30:27Yeah, we will make phone calls for your daughter as soon as I get down there.
30:30We get you someplace cool where we can call.
30:32Can someone call up here?
30:34We'll see about all that.
30:36We'll handle all that once we get down there, okay?
30:38I'm scared.
30:39It's okay.
30:40Here we go.
30:42As soon as he's got the warrant, they go in, and as soon as he opens the front door, he says,
30:54you can smell death.
30:55He goes straight to the garage.
30:57There's a Corvette that Jimmy was working on rebuilding.
31:03There he is.
31:04And in the passenger side of the Corvette is Jimmy's body.
31:10He's in his underwear.
31:11He's laying on a tarp that's half wrapped around his legs, and his legs are shoved halfway into the car.
31:17And the body is not rotting yet, but it is bloated.
31:23It was clear from the way the body was found that that is not where Jimmy had died.
31:28Somebody had put him in the tarp and pulled him into the garage and tried to lift him into the car and put him in the passenger seat.
31:37They'd gotten the legs in, but the torso was heavier than they'd anticipated, and so it was essentially a half-done job.
31:44The scene is photographed.
31:45Jimmy's body is sent for autopsy, and officers carry out a search of the property.
31:51In the bedside table on her side of the bed, they found a single unused insulin needle, which was collected and taken into evidence.
32:03It wasn't until I arrived at the house that the detective tell us there is a body inside, and I lost it.
32:13My father was beside himself.
32:17Well, I can't even describe it.
32:19It was just a big hole, you know, being driven into you.
32:25We all knew in the back of our heads that Nicky did it.
32:30Hey, Marjorie.
32:37Hi.
32:37Hi, Richard.
32:39Go ahead and get up off the floor for me for just a second.
32:41As of when you and I first met on the porch, you were very apprehensive to let the glaze into your garage.
32:53Why?
32:55It's full of car parts.
32:57I would get chewed out.
32:59When was the last time you were in the garage, Nicky?
33:04I want you to do me a favor more than that.
33:07I want you to do yourself a favor and your child a favor.
33:11This is going a path you don't want it to go because you are not being completely honest with me, and I know that for a fact.
33:19I'm trying to give you a chance to pump the brakes for a minute, think about your child, and yourself, and I'm going to ask you again.
33:33Why did you not want me in that garage?
33:35Why did you not want me in that garage?
34:05I want you to do that.
34:07Nikki.
34:08Sir?
34:11As a parent, I'm going to keep bringing this up to you.
34:15Ow, I've got Riley.
34:18Now she's lost her dad.
34:21No matter what happens going forward, there is the path where we tell the truth, and we probably get better treatment throughout the system than we do if we maintain a lie that's going to happen to us.
34:35to unravel very very easily why did you not tell us that body was a grouch i was scared of
34:46i don't know the way that the way that it would look i mean i followed this in person's report
34:52and then that given he then took car in the garage that that is why i was scared
35:00before we go on i want legal advice do you want legal advice i can't give you legally no i'm saying
35:09i would like to talk to a lawyer okay that is fun that is absolutely cover my butt that's not me i
35:14had no doubt that would be your priority ultimately they have to cut off questioning but at that point
35:21they have enough they have means they have opportunity they have an insulin needle in the house
35:26this officer is going to put you in handcuffs we're going to walk you out and you will be
35:31built in the jail for murk can i ask a question what do i do um i am on certain beds that i can't just
35:40immediately stop i will go into withdrawal they have doctors at the jail that you can speak to
35:46they have medical staff and they they can get you if it's something you're prescribed and it's
35:51something you need and they'll take care of you can you tell you said you're going to go on long
35:57back i can i don't know i think maybe um jamie i don't want jamie to get riley i want my mother to
36:08get riley well we'll work all that out she may already have her i don't know
36:12we obtained emergency custody from the courts for riley we made sure that she was in our hands
36:24and we were not going to let her go jamie shares with investigators her suspicions of what happened
36:30to jimmy the word insulin keeps coming up my first thought is i need to learn about insulin
36:37the investigators were suspicious that mr capello had died from an insulin overdose
36:45insulin is a very unstable substance and so over time the actual insulin will break down so for
36:55someone who has committed murder it would be in their best interest to allow a body to decompose over
37:03a couple of days so that that particular substance would no longer be detectable at a reliable level
37:15when i learned this it's like a light bulb has gone on and all of these weird things about
37:20the way nikki capello was pushing people away just trying to buy time it all makes perfect sense
37:27but this case made me nervous because we didn't have a smoking gun
37:31we're never going to be able to prove positively that it was insulin there was nobody that saw the
37:36murder we have no eyewitnesses to anything this is going to be a circumstantial case to jimmy's family's
37:43horror nikki capello is granted bail only days after jimmy's body is found we lived on edge with the fear
37:52that she would remain free and all this time you know just afraid is she going to get off
38:00but several months after the murder investigators receive a game-changing call from a friend of nikki
38:06capello that person says that about a week before jimmy died she was out at a barbecue at their house
38:14she says she and nikki were joking as people do oh i hate my husband he'd be worth more to me dead
38:18that kind of thing and then nikki tells her you know i could kill him like i could use insulin
38:26and then nikki capello looks at her and says i actually tried last week i don't know how that
38:32effort survived so much insulin this was going to be a way to break this case open
38:37the trial of nikki capello finally begins on may 16th 2022. the story that we told the jury is that
38:44nikki capello had a plan she set out to kill her husband and to get away with it she's going to do
38:50it with insulin and while he's sleeping she gives him the jab she tries it once and it doesn't work
38:58about a week later she doses him he goes to sleep and does not wake up
39:05she hides the body and her plan is if i can keep him here for two or three days then i'll go dump him
39:10somewhere but then it came to step three of her plan she has trouble getting him down the stairs she
39:17can't get him in the car and she makes the weird decision to call somebody else she'd gotten away
39:23with it if she had not told people she'd gotten away with it i saw nikki face to face the whole trial
39:34she never shed a tear no emotion it's almost like she wasn't human anymore on the final day of the
39:46trial the jury returned after just 30 minutes of deliberation and they come out and they say we the
39:53people in the case of state versus nikki capello find the defendant guilty of the charge of murder nikki
39:59capello is given life with the possibility of pearl it was bittersweet real justice comes when she rots
40:07in hell no sentence is long enough for what she did no sentence she is not a human she is not a nurse
40:17the way i look at it is uh nikki had to hate her daughter that much to go and take
40:23a mother away from her a father away from her everything i believe jimmy is at rest thumbs up
40:34but riley is safe she's so well loved we told her that your dad's in heaven with jesus and he's helping
40:42angels work on her car yeah i miss that guy every day yeah i would like to remember jimmy
40:48jimmy how everyone remembered jimmy he made a knot in the community with his laughter and his sense of
40:57humor a good father a great son and a stand-up guy oh your egg
41:06she was young beautiful smart he's funny he makes everybody laugh but behind closed doors is
41:19your fat it's zooming on me i'm already picking up everything was red flags for me she was leaving him
41:25he snuffed her out
