Troopers chase a suspect off-road, through wrong-way highway traffic and across busy city streets as dangerous debris falls from the back of his stolen truck.
Transcript
00:00I'm Tom Morris, Jr., and this is Fugitives Caught on Taste.
00:27This guy has no regard for anybody else on the road.
00:30First up, we're in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
00:57Where state police are in pursuit of a man wanted for aggravated assault, they say also fled a traffic stop and then drove recklessly on the wrong side of the road.
01:09Earlier, Trooper Tyler Ashcraft tried to conduct a traffic stop on this SUV for improper registration, but the driver refused to stop.
01:21Now, with the suspect driving erratically, Trooper Ashcraft attempts a pit maneuver.
01:27But the driver slams on his brakes to avoid the cruiser's impact.
01:34Next, the suspect crosses over to the opposite lane.
01:38As Ashcraft continues his pursuit and calls it in.
01:49He's a wrong-wheel intersection.
01:52And he's driving pretty reckless.
01:55Straight to the intersection.
01:56Then, the suspect takes the pursuit off-road.
02:06And Trooper Ashcraft loses sight of him.
02:09Damn it.
02:10But soon, Arkansas State Trooper Tanner Middlecoff spots the vehicle coming right at him.
02:18He follows the suspect onto a busy road where he continues driving dangerously as more troopers join the chase.
02:30But before troopers can make another pit attempt, the SUV's right rear tire comes completely off, and the suspect goes off-road again.
02:52On the road, by an Ashley factory, heading back towards the factory, off-road, going to the mud.
03:05Troopers continue their pursuit, but one of them gets stuck in a ditch.
03:11Time's over, I'm stuck in a ditch.
03:13Meanwhile, the suspect makes it up the hill and smashes through one of the factory gates.
03:19We are point-bound to the basically parking lot.
03:22To the parking lot?
03:23Yeah, where this construction is.
03:25Concerned about the safety of the employees in the factory, troopers scramble to quickly get into the complex and locate the suspect.
03:33Open the gate! Open the gate! Open the gate! Open the gate!
03:38Was he last seen here behind Ashley in the construction area?
03:44Some of the workers are pointing back east.
03:46Workers aren't able to open the gate, but they share some valuable info with the trooper.
03:52Hey, where'd he go?
03:53He took off a dually?
03:54It's a trailer!
03:55He took off a dually?
03:56I think!
03:58While in the lot, the suspect carjacked a commercial truck and then bled from the complex in it.
04:04Stole a truck from Nestle Road. He's in a gray dually with a trailer on it.
04:12He didn't take through. He is southbound now.
04:16Now, the suspect is back out on the main road, still driving recklessly.
04:21And still being pursued by multiple troopers.
04:28One of them attempts a pit maneuver.
04:33But it backfires.
04:42The fugitive escapes again and continues driving dangerously through busy local streets.
04:54Left on the highland, left on the highland.
04:57Determined to stop the driver, troopers try another pit maneuver.
05:01And then stop steps.
05:13But both attempts fail.
05:17A traffic camera shows the situation escalating as the suspect clips this SUV.
05:30But the fugitive's luck appears to finally run out as he tries to make this left turn.
05:46When the suspect attempts the turn, he skids and crashes into this traffic pole.
05:53Disconnecting the trailer and spilling all of its contents onto the road.
05:57This footage of the crash was captured by a motorist waiting at the lights.
06:04Holy ****!
06:07Oh God!
06:09He's still going, he's still going.
06:11Incredibly, the driver continues to flee even as something falls off the back of the truck causing a fire.
06:18The truck also drags a yield sign along with it, further frustrating the pursuing troopers.
06:25Get up there and take him out.
06:27Get up there and take him out.
06:36Left on the forker, left on the forker road.
06:38Finally, after another pit attempt, the suspect drives onto a grassy median and loses control.
06:51He's about to get the guard rail.
06:53He went through the guard rail, cross traffic into the housing complex.
07:02Somehow, he makes it across every lane on the other side of the interstate, driving in the wrong direction, and lands in a watery ditch next to a housing complex.
07:12The final moments of the crash were picked up by this home security camera.
07:19Troopers arrive and cautiously approach with guns drawn.
07:23And as they enter the ditch, a passenger suddenly emerges from the vehicle.
07:29I'm not the driver, I'm not the driver.
07:30I don't care, shut your mouth, you have the rights to make solid.
07:34We got the female driver fled on foot over the fence in this neighborhood.
07:38The passenger was taken to a hospital where she was treated for serious injuries.
07:44She was not charged in the incident.
07:47The driver, who took off on foot, was apprehended a short time later with the help of Trooper Middlecoff and his canine partner Dex.
07:56He was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and then arrested.
08:00He was ID'd as 50-year-old Timmy Lynn Davis.
08:05Davis was charged with felony fleeing in a vehicle, aggravated assault,
08:10theft greater or equal to $25,000 for stealing the dually, criminal mischief, leaving the scene of an accident, and several lesser charges.
08:18He accepted a deal from the state pleading guilty in exchange for all of the lesser charges being dropped.
08:26He was sentenced to 40 years in prison and ordered to pay over $85,000 for loss and damages from the chase.
08:33No troopers or civilians were injured during the incident.
08:40Next, we're in Columbus, Ohio, where a sheriff's deputy is in high-speed pursuit of a driver wanted for failure to comply with police commands.
08:49Earlier, just after 3.30 in the morning, Franklin County Deputy Roger Gwynne was overseeing the impounding of a vehicle from this gas station.
09:02When another vehicle pulled in and parked between the flatbed truck and the vehicle about to be towed.
09:08Hey, hey! Tell him to move it.
09:12He's got to tow this car and move it. Can you back up and go on the other side of the car?
09:17I'll be fine. No, you're okay. Thank you.
09:19I appreciate it.
09:21The driver agreed to move her car, but as she backed out...
09:25Go ahead, my cruiser! Hey!
09:27Ah, dang it!
09:30After she bumped into the deputy's cruiser, the driver parked next to a gas pump while the deputy called it in.
09:36I just had someone back into my cruiser at the gas station.
09:40But as Deputy Gwynne assessed the damage, the driver suddenly took off.
09:45They're taking off. Hold on.
09:47He then jumped in his cruiser and took up her suit.
09:5122, where you at?
09:53I'm heading south down Cleveland. They're not stopping.
09:57As the deputy pulls closer, the suspect begins driving even faster.
10:00This past 18 blew through the light at 17.
10:05Speeds are 95.
10:07But then, after the suspect blows past another red light and the road curves...
10:11As the driver speeds around this curve in the road, she loses control.
10:23With two wheels up on the curve, she hits a bus shelter and then a pole before finally coming to a stop.
10:30Code four, code four. They took out a white pole. I'm on fourth half.
10:33There's going to be multiple occupants in the car. It was a female driver. I'm going to get out.
10:40Additional officers arrive on the scene as the deputy walks back to the crash where several passengers, including the driver and a woman who's holding a baby, have emerged from the vehicle, seemingly without any major injuries.
10:54What are you doing? Put your hands behind your back. You got a baby in the car? Are you crazy?
11:01We have an infant in the car.
11:04Copy.
11:06Deputy Gwynn cuffs the driver.
11:08You got warrants or what?
11:09No.
11:10Why would you run?
11:11You got a medical.
11:13Dumb. Just a dumb descent. I'm sorry.
11:16Have a seat right here.
11:19You could have killed, I mean, everybody.
11:23Medical personnel arrive on scene and the five passengers were taken to a hospital where they were all treated for minor injuries.
11:32The driver, 20-year-old Rashauna Pippin, was medically cleared and released back to police custody.
11:39She was charged with child endangerment and failure to comply with police commands.
11:44She took a deal pleading guilty to failure to comply and the endangering children charge was dropped.
11:49Instead of jail time, she was placed on three years community control and her driver's license was suspended for three years.
12:02Next, we're in Sacramento, California, where officers are in pursuit of a reportedly armed suspect wanted for drug possession following an alleged domestic violence incident.
12:11Johnny, stop!
12:12I'm going to take you to the ground!
12:15Earlier, police received a 911 call.
12:18911 emergency, please.
12:20Hi, I'm at the end of the building of Alt Sacramento.
12:23Okay, what's going on?
12:24So, I'm here for a mic.
12:26He's talking about me.
12:27Who?
12:28Uh, this guy.
12:29Johnny.
12:30Do you know who he is?
12:31He was my, uh, boyfriend, but he was, like, playing games.
12:34Is he still there?
12:35Yes.
12:36Okay, does he still have the knife?
12:39No, I'm sure what I mean.
12:40Did it hit you?
12:41No, but you guys might do the gun.
12:43He tried to shoot me with it.
12:45Okay, well, do you know his last name?
12:47Balcorda.
12:48You don't do that to people.
12:49You don't kill people.
12:50The suspect, 37-year-old Johnny Balcorda, already had an active felony warrant in a drug possession case.
12:57And when police arrived at the alleged crime scene, they say Balcorda fled on foot.
13:02Officers pursued, but lost him near a neighborhood park.
13:06Sacramento PD, the California Highway Patrol, and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department then formed a perimeter around the park.
13:14And an hour later, they spotted him.
13:1731, we got him. He's about to go.
13:20He's running.
13:21You better stop!
13:23Now, this Sacramento officer exits his vehicle and pursues the suspect on foot.
13:32Johnny, stop!
13:33I'm gonna take you to the ground!
13:37Drop! Drop the gun! Drop it!
13:39But he manages to get away and runs toward the water.
13:43This is the Sacramento Police Department.
13:45Johnny Balcorda, you are completely surrounded.
13:47We know that you are hiding down by the riverbed.
13:50We need you to come out with your hands up, nothing in your hands, and surrender peacefully.
13:55If you decide to flee, we will send a dog.
13:57That dog will find you and that dog will bite you.
14:00We do not want to have to hurt you.
14:02Come out now.
14:03Surrender peacefully.
14:04Put your hands up in the air.
14:05You want to talk to the bike trail.
14:07An hour later, Officer Chad Lewis and his canine partner Bingo are called in.
14:13Heal!
14:14Heal!
14:15Johnny Balcorda will send the dog.
14:17Hands up right now!
14:18When Balcorda doesn't respond, two officers and the canine unit move in, and soon encounter
14:25the suspect walking on a path.
14:27Johnny!
14:28Johnny, hands up!
14:29It's up.
14:30It's up.
14:31It's up.
14:32It's up.
14:33It's up.
14:34When he still refuses to comply, the canine is deployed.
14:36Bust!
14:37Bust!
14:38Drop the gun!
14:39Drop the gun!
14:40Drop the gun!
14:41Drop the gun!
14:42Drop the gun!
14:43Two officers open fire, and the suspect goes down.
14:44Where's the gun?
14:45I got it.
14:46I got the gun.
14:47I got the gun.
14:48I got the gun.
14:49Take it out.
14:50Take it out.
14:51Take it out.
14:52I got the gun.
14:53Drop the gun!
14:54fire and the suspect goes down. As one of the officers secures the gun, the other retrieves
15:04the canine. The highway patrol helicopter lands nearby and a paramedic who was on board provides
15:20medical aid for the suspect's injuries. Valcorta was transported to an area hospital with non-life
15:39threatening injuries. After receiving medical treatment, he was booked into the Sacramento
15:44County Jail and charged with obstructing or interfering with a peace officer's animal,
15:50resisting obstructing an officer, and for his outstanding warrant for possession of a controlled
15:56substance. Domestic violence charges were not filed. Two firearms were recovered at the scene
16:02but determined to be fake. Valcorta is being held without bond and both of his cases are pending.
16:08No officers were injured during the incident, including canine bingo.
16:15Next, we're in Seattle, Washington, where police are in pursuit of a pair of armed carjackers.
16:22Earlier, dispatch received a call from a woman who said she was carjacked by two men with guns.
16:29Seattle PD ground units and the department's helicopter,
16:33Guardian One, using its infrared camera, quickly tracked down the suspects.
16:38Guardian One, we got you in sight.
16:40All right, got it lit up, sir.
16:44Still westbound.
16:47Speed, 50, 60 miles an hour. Weather's clear. No pedestrian. It's going southbound on Aurora from 90.
16:55Now, as the suspects continue to flee, their driving becomes more erratic.
17:03OK, we're taking the exit and he might be wiping out here.
17:07OK, but...
17:08I've left car wheel to say we'll be ready for it.
17:11Damage sustained to the vehicle eventually causes the suspects to slow down and then come to a stop.
17:21Get out of the door!
17:22As officers surround the armed fugitives, they make a run for it.
17:26Go!
17:29Go run!
17:30Hit it! Hit it! Hit it! Hit it! He's got a gun!
17:39But Guardian One keeps a close eye on them as officers and a canine pursue on the ground.
17:45OK, Guardian One, they just went westbound on Thomas on foot.
17:47Stop!
17:53The suspects split up.
17:54I got right!
17:55A canine officer reaches the first suspect, but he manages to free himself and keeps running.
18:06Drop the gun!
18:06Don't believe it! Stop!
18:09Let me see your f***ing hands!
18:11Get on the f***ing ground now! Get on the ground! Get on the f***ing ground!
18:16As police cuff the second suspect, the canine catches back up with the other.
18:22Take it! Get on the ground! Get on the ground! Get on the ground! Get on the ground!
18:27Now! Get on the ground!
18:29Stay down!
18:30Hands up!
18:31On your stomach now! On your stomach! Do not move!
18:36We have two in custody. Taking two in custody. We have two firearms ditched.
18:41Now, Guardian One helps to lead officers on the ground to the tossed guns.
18:47Yeah, it's right in the middle of the road. The officer will run in there. Go back.
18:50Keep on going. Keep on going. And stop in the middle of the road there. Turn to your right.
18:54On Thomas. Go back to your right. And it's right in the middle of the road right there. And then the
19:01other one's over by the other guy. We have two in custody under control. We have two firearms recovered.
19:08The suspects were identified as brothers, both juveniles ages 12 and 13. Their guns turned out
19:15to be ghost guns, which are illegal in Washington state. They were arrested and charged with robbery,
19:22theft of a motor vehicle, attempted robbery, and unlawful possession of a firearm. The 13-year-old
19:29driver was also charged with attempting to elude police. The 12-year-old pled guilty and was
19:36sentenced to 15 to 36 weeks at a State Department of Children, Youth and Families facility. The 13-year-old
19:44pled not guilty and was released to electronic home monitoring. But after violating the terms of his
19:50release, he was sentenced to 328 to 622 days in secure detention, with credit for 303 days served.
20:04I'm Tom Morris Jr. We'll see you next time.
