00:00Dean Team Ross on this.
00:03Yeah, the example that comes to mind, someone tweeted this at me,
00:06and I was checking to make sure the years lined up.
00:09And they weren't exactly, well, they weren't both trades.
00:12There's no exactly about it.
00:13But the Rams, we talked about the time frame, how this is sort of,
00:17this day has become a more, it's a busier day on the calendar
00:21than it had been for most of our time together in this room,
00:24doing this show for more than 20 years now.
00:28And November of 21, they traded for Von Miller
00:32and also signed Odell Beckham Jr.
00:35Beckham was a free agent, but they added both guys.
00:38They made their debuts at the same week.
00:42And so, and then they won the Super Bowl, and that was on the heels of them.
00:47They made the Matthew Stafford trade to begin with,
00:48and it became like, you know, F them picks and all this stuff with the Rams.
00:52And I think that that maybe was a key moment in,
00:58because where's an example of a team adding at the deadline?
01:01Well, there's one, and it worked.
01:03So it maybe has increased the amount of attention and even the pressure
01:10that teams and their managers feel to do something if they're that close.
01:14Like, let's push this across the finish line like the Rams did.
01:18And, you know, that's already four seasons ago now.
01:21I don't have a more recent example.
01:24I mean, teams have, you know, have added guys,
01:27but I don't know of one that it was as impactful and successful as that was.
01:32I'm sure there were years when we were starting out
01:37where we didn't even acknowledge the deadline.
01:39Right.
01:40And most of those Bills teams were just, you know, borderline in the hunt.
01:45So you don't need to be sellers, and you're definitely not buyers,
01:48and there might have been two or three trades anywhere in the league.
01:51Not huge moves.
01:52Right.
01:53I like that it's more like this now,
01:55but I'm also disappointed that there wasn't just more.
01:58When you saw how well the Jets did, I mean, in my opinion at least,
02:03and even New Orleans getting two picks for Shahid
02:05or the Raiders getting two picks for rental Jacoby Myers,
02:10I feel like that should have spurred on more action from the bottom dwellers.
02:15But you don't have to be that – I mean, you have to be pretty far down
02:19to want to give up at this point.
02:22And when you're doing that, I mean, there's a ripple effect.
02:25It's not just your fans, but it's your players, and I don't know.
02:28Not everybody, obviously, not everybody is for it.
02:31And I also think that the – and I think Ross got to this,
02:34that the appetite to take on dead money has maybe never been larger.
02:42Like, teams I don't think are as scared of it.
02:45And that – look, that's just the reality of the cap always going up.
02:48So you've always got room to play with.
02:51I mean, we saw the Bills not be afraid of $31 million.
02:54The Broncos weren't afraid of $80 million with Russell Wilson.
02:57They just – they did what they thought they had to do
02:59and were back in the playoffs a year later.
03:02So, you know, teams might feel like they can get out from under that more easily.
03:07I don't know if the CBA hasn't changed as well in what teams are allowed to do
03:13as far as converting salary into bonus.
03:17I think the Dolphin Eagle trade had this in it where they took some –
03:22one of the trades – I'm not sure if it was that one at this deadline –
03:25but one of the trades that's been consummated in the last two days or so
03:28had the trading away team convert salary into bonus, they pay it,
03:34and then the team that's inheriting the player is only taking on like a million bucks,
03:37and they can do that on their cap as opposed to like the full amount.
03:41So the trading team is taking on additional dead money just to try to get the better asset.
03:47So there's a lot of financial machinations that either have changed or become more palatable
03:53because the cap just keeps exploding.
03:55See, now, if sports were fun like they used to be,
03:58there would be something like a commissioner's exemption,
04:02where if your trade is really fun, we just sort of waive the financial.
04:06Like if your trade is actually a blockbuster?
04:09Yeah.
04:10Or even close.
04:12Just fun.
04:13Doesn't have to be a blockbuster.
04:14I wanted to think about Kyler Murray for Trevor Lawrence.
04:20But you can't.
04:21I mean, you can't – Kyler Murray for anything.
04:23Yeah.
04:24Like you really can't even –
04:26I guess it was possible, but maybe so hard financially to make a move like that
04:34that it wasn't even ever talked about.
04:36But watching the game last night, I'm like, what are they doing with Kyler Murray?
04:39That is getting written about and talked about more,
04:43not so much as the deadline was approaching,
04:46but the offseason that, you know,
04:49whether they believe like Jacoby Brissett can be their long-term answer or anything,
04:53that no one there was involved in the drafting or even the extension on Murray.
04:59So if they're sour on him, they could Russell Wilson that.
05:03I think – I would almost bet on them doing that.
05:06Murray for Tua.
05:08Right.
05:09There you go.
05:10That might be better.
05:11But you just can't even really play with that.
05:12Right.
05:13Rob is with us.
05:14Hello.
05:16Hey, guys.
05:17Good afternoon.
05:17How are you?
05:18Okay, Rob.
05:20A little frustrated on my end.
05:22I'll tell you, I was looking forward to kind of a smash move being made.
05:26The challenging part is you're watching other teams that are contenders adding pieces to get better.
05:32And we didn't do anything.
05:34And, you know, this past week I was thinking to myself, well, I think we're going to be okay because the defense is coming on.
05:40I was really bummed at the Hoyt injury.
05:42I really think that set us back.
05:44And I was thinking we needed to add something either on offense or defense to compensate.
05:49What are your thoughts?
05:49You could have.
05:54I mean, I understand that.
05:56I did not have the biggest appetite for it.
05:59I think there's just a lot.
06:00We're talking about here constantly.
06:02There's just a lot that goes into it that makes that much, much, much easier said than done.
06:07So, for a while it was wide receiver.
06:09Then it was the secondary.
06:11Then it was defensive line.
06:12Again, I lean Team Ross, which is just what are the chances you get the guy you want at the price you're willing to pay and that the player is going to make an impact for you.
06:25I don't think they're great.
06:26I never, I think this is being consistent, I never saw a receiver coming for the Bills.
06:31I can believe that they made calls.
06:34I'm not going to tell you that people who were reporting that were wrong.
06:36I mean, I think it also behooves the Bills for the public to think that they also made calls because that's what we all want.
06:43I'm not sure trying and not making trades is any different than not trying and not making trades in the end, but whatever.
06:50I'm not going to tell you that they didn't try, but I never really, I guess maybe I should capitulate a little bit on this if they did.
06:59Because for me it was, I just did not believe that the Bills were going to go against what they've built.
07:07So, like such a hard turn of the wheel at this point with how well they're doing overall.
07:13At what price somebody that would have mattered would have cost.
07:17So it doesn't surprise me.
07:19I would have been, you know, less surprised an hour or two hours ago when there was more buzz about this.
07:26But going into the day, I really didn't see a receiver move.
07:30I was not, yeah, as the day started unfolding, really when I got here, I started getting sort of some intel that they were working on receiver.
07:39And like, I don't know if that's what you're describing, you know, like them wanting that word out there or what.
07:45I mean, I don't think they get anything out of us talking about it realistically.
07:50But they do, if they have the appearance that they tried and just didn't like the price or whatever, that's better than not trying.
07:57But I didn't get up today.
07:59I mean, I spent yesterday talking about how I thought pass rusher, some sort of Hoyt-Oliver replacement, jumped over receiver.
08:09And there was very little, I got this one text about Von Miller, that was the only chatter I really heard about them being in on anyone to give them something in place of losing two cornerstone guys.
08:24Hoyt, it's so weird to talk about Hoyt that way because he barely played.
08:28But I think he really mattered.
08:30And now he's gone, Oliver's gone, and as much as receiver is exciting and sexy and we've made like a factory out of talking about it here, I really was expecting something to supplement the defense.
08:45Because the offense, it's easier to defend.
08:50I don't agree with it, but they made their choices and their team is still relatively on the floor.
08:58Palmer will be back.
08:59He even practiced a little last week.
09:01Maybe he's even back this week.
09:02And they've got their full complement of dudes.
09:05The defense has gotten picked off here.
09:08Like, they've lost impactful guys, one of whom we just barely got to know but was having a big impact.
09:17I thought that would warrant a move more.
09:19And maybe fans would have been mad about, well, I've wanted a receiver all this time and you went ahead and traded for, you know, whatever, your name here.
09:26Pass rusher or, you know, edge guy.
09:29Or de-tackle.
09:30But I think that was maybe more called for than receiver.
09:33But that fire never really got burning today, it doesn't seem.
09:36John is next.
09:37Hi, John.
09:38Hey, guys.
09:39How are you doing?
09:39Good.
09:40I just wanted to comment and ask, do you think that the lack of trade, I know it could be for any number of reasons that teams didn't want to trade with the Bills, but that teams might be blackballing the Bills, if that makes sense?
09:55If that they don't want to see a team that's really close get there because they're afraid how maybe it impacts the conference or their own division?
10:02I'll hang up and listen.
10:03Thanks.
10:03Well, there's always the idea of a division opponent helping a division opponent.
10:09And the Jets were the biggest sellers on the day.
10:12And I don't know if the Bills, I mean, Quentin Williams is a monster ad in the middle of any team's defensive line.
10:18And that obviously includes the Bills with the needs they have that I just talked about.
10:23So I would understand a team like the Dolphins as well as the Jets, sellers, not wanting to trade and help out the Bills.
10:31You know, even if they're not in it this year, they might not want to have, you know, a guy like Quentin Williams might be a cornerstone player for five more years wherever he goes.
10:39And so you don't want to do that.
10:41But I don't think overall, I think if you've got the right price, you know, and you're talking to the Saints or the Jaguars, I think they're making those trades.
10:52If you meet the price, you know, if indeed the player was available, you know, it depends how you won't, you never know how much a team wants to move a guy.
11:01Do they want to move a guy just because they think they're going to clean up at the price or do they want to move a guy because he's a headache?
11:06Like, Brian Thomas Jr., we talked about leading up to 4 o'clock, was, you know, maybe kind of right in the middle of that, right?
11:13Is he a problem there?
11:15And do they want to unload him?
11:18Or is it just if somebody goes as far as a first-round pick, then, okay, we'll do it.
11:24I think the Jets made two trades you really couldn't say no to.
11:27Right.
11:28And who knows what else they were willing to do or if they woke up today, as you put it, thinking they would do this.
11:35Quentin Williams, they get a 2 and a 1 from Dallas.
11:39And the Bills or any good team would have had to beat that, not just meet it.
11:44Beat it.
11:45And then they're in your division and maybe they don't want to, you know, break ties that way.
11:49So I kind of see it like that.
11:51Black ball because they don't want the Bills to win or something?
11:54I don't understand that at all.
11:56803-0550.
11:57Mike Schopen, the Bulldog, here for your calls.
11:59Trade deadline day.
12:01The Bills make no moves.
