The Johor Baru High Court has upheld the 10-year jail sentence imposed on a trader for causing serious injuries to his pregnant wife in a case that shocked the nation in 2021.

On Tuesday (Nov 4), Justice Atan Mustaffa Yussof Ahmad dismissed 42-year-old Rosmaini Abdul Raof’s appeal against his conviction and sentence handed down by the Sessions Court on Dec 9 last year.

00:00The Johor Bahru High Court on Tuesday upheld a 10-year jail sentence against a trader for
00:07causing serious injuries to his pregnant wife in 2021. Justice Atan Mustafa Yusuf Ahmad dismissed
00:1542-year-old Rosmani Abdul-Rauf's appeal against his conviction by the Sessions Court on December
00:219 last year and also rejected a prosecution cross-appeal for a longer sentence. The judge
00:27ruled the Sessions Court did not err in accepting the prosecution's witness testimony and found the
00:32defense exhibits raised too late to cast doubt. The court also noted that Rosmani was the only person
00:39with access to the apartment during the incident, admitted to striking his wife,
00:44and that medical reports confirmed she suffered severe brain injuries requiring surgery.
00:49The accused had also tried to flee when police arrived. A stay of execution pending appeal to
00:55the Court of Appeal was granted, with bail increased from RM15,000 to RM25,000.
