00:00At a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi Wednesday evening,
00:04Vice President J.D. Vance said there needs to be a significant reduction
00:08in legal immigration to the United States.
00:13Vance said former President Joe Biden's immigration stance allowed more immigrants
00:18to enter the country than he believes to be optimal and that it could destabilize
00:23or harm the cohesion of American society.
00:25But my view is, look, there are people who want to come to the United States of America
00:29and some of them, I'm sure, can enrich the United States of America by coming here,
00:35but we have got to get our overall numbers way, way down.
00:39Too many people have come into the United States of America.
00:42Vance argued that legal immigration is complicated.
00:46He said the influx of undocumented migrants who entered the U.S. under the Biden administration
00:51undercuts the wages of American workers and increases the cost of housing.
00:56Vance explained how his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, comes from a family of immigrants
01:01who settled in the U.S. back in the 1980s.
01:04I do believe that some immigrants, many immigrants do in fact enrich the United States of America,
01:10but here's the problem.
01:11We have got, we don't even know how many illegal aliens we have.
01:15We don't even know.
01:16The best guess is probably 25, 30 million people.
01:20I've heard estimates as high as 50 million.
01:22When something like that happens, you've got to allow your own society to cohere a little bit,
01:28to build a sense of common identity for all the newcomers to assimilate.
01:33Vance also spoke about his late friend and founder of TPUSA, Charlie Kirk,
01:38who was assassinated on September 10th, calling him a great husband and great father.
01:43He also said Kirk was the most effective person in politics that he had ever seen.
01:48Vance touched on a conversation he had with Kirk just months before his death.
01:52I remember one time in particular where Charlie Kirk called me, and guys, he was mad.
01:58It was one, you know, I wouldn't say the last conversation that I had with him,
02:03but it was in the last few months of his life.
02:05And he called me and he said, J.D., I'm really worried.
02:08I'm really worried that what's going on in the Middle East right now
02:12is going to lead the United States into a protracted military conflict.
02:16I've never told anybody that, that Charlie was really worried about that in the final
02:21months of his life.
02:22Vance emphasized that the U.S. should stay out of wars that aren't necessary
02:27and avoid losing American lives in them.
02:29He praised President Trump's actions in the Middle East,
02:32including diplomacy in the Gaza ceasefire deal
02:34and a U.S. military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.
02:38Meanwhile, the U.S. is ramping up military activity against Venezuela
02:43and attacking boats in the region that it claims are carrying illegal drugs.
02:48Charlie Kirk's widow, Erica, who took over leadership of Turning Point USA,
02:52introduced Vance at the Ole Miss event.
02:54It was one of her first public appearances in her new role.
