Traffic Cops S12E22 ((Jan 13 2024)
Transcript
00:00It's gone straight to the red line.
00:03He's got damage.
00:05Don't do that! Stay still!
00:08Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:10It does have warning markers for potential firearms.
00:15Stand over!
00:16You're under arrest.
00:17Intent supply class of beer drug.
00:19Police a thousand square miles.
00:23It's a crash, crash.
00:25Have you got any other injury other than your head?
00:27With some of the UK's most dangerous roads.
00:30Oh, no one's been killed out of this. I don't know.
00:33Do you know how fast we're going?
00:34It's scary when stuff like this happened.
00:36In life and death situations.
00:39Get on the ground, you'll be tainted!
00:41We've got runners.
00:42Face down!
00:45Yes, yes, successful stick.
00:49Around every corner.
00:51Great acting, mate.
00:53There's a new challenge for the traffic cops.
00:57They're flying the vehicle now!
01:00I'm going home.
01:01Stay led!
01:02Stop grabbing me like that!
01:06It is crash, crash, crash!
01:09We're on a dead end.
01:11We've got an off-road.
01:12Coming up.
01:14It's going counter-flow, counter-flow.
01:17Dangerous drivers out of control.
01:19It's a crash, crash, crash.
01:21Crash, crash, crash.
01:22We've got Mel running.
01:24Whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:27What are you doing?
01:28Battling with officers.
01:30I'm warning you, mate.
01:32I'm going to gas you in a minute.
01:35I can see the vehicle.
01:36I'm just trying to judge how deep this water is into it.
01:39And a life-or-death situation.
01:41Believe me, might be quite a correct.
01:44Forces the traffic cops into action.
01:46Hello?
01:47Can you hear me?
01:48Can you hear me?
02:04Streets are relatively sparse traffic.
02:09Not an awful lot going on at the minute.
02:11Three hours into a night shift.
02:13Traffic cop Stuart Smith is on patrol near Chesterfield.
02:17I'm always looking out for drivers that stand out a little bit,
02:20like they're exiting a junction a bit fast.
02:22There'll be something about the characteristic of that particular car
02:25that stands out from the rest.
02:28And they ask a tango three three.
02:31I can see a van that's coming towards me,
02:33and he's going noticeably quicker than all the other road users.
02:36Go to your vehicle check, please.
02:39Caller 14105.
02:42As Stuart makes a U-turn.
02:45Yes, yes, bell stop, bell stop.
02:48The van driver ducks down a side street.
02:51I'm witnessing a van that's involved in crime.
02:54Has he just stolen something?
02:55Or it could be, has he drunk?
02:57The only way to find out is to catch up with the driver and speak to him.
03:01One occupant decant from the vehicle.
03:06We've got a stop, stop, stop.
03:14We just kind of have this stalemate on the road.
03:17They're waiting for me to get out of the car,
03:19they're waiting for me to walk up to it,
03:21and then they'll speed off,
03:22and then of course I've got to run back to the car, it slows me down.
03:27I've played this game before, so I'm not going to get out.
03:30Hey, it's making up, it's making up.
03:42No other road users on the road this time.
03:44It's gone down a dead end.
03:48It's on an off-road.
03:49When a car doesn't stop, your heart does sink and your mind goes 100 miles an hour,
03:53you've got so much to think about.
03:55The dangers are huge.
03:57Formanet, the suit is authorised.
04:00Keep me up to date with dynamic risk assessment please.
04:03Yes, yes.
04:05The first and first.
04:08T-Mac, suit management train.
04:11Road conditions are quite bold, wet.
04:15Vehicle's now lights out.
04:16He turns his lights out in an effort to try and evade me being able to chase him.
04:22Vehicle continues to fail stop.
04:25But there's other units that are coming towards me,
04:28so we can hopefully get this van stopped quickly.
04:30Left, left, left.
04:32Vehicle still lights out.
04:34It's quite dangerous at this stage.
04:35Members of the public can't see this van coming,
04:37and it is not stopping for anyone.
04:39Speed is now 4-0 towards 5-0 in a 3-0.
04:42Towards the roundabout, it's not about the direction of the roundabout.
04:47Not one, not one.
04:49Not two, not two.
04:51Not three, not three.
04:53Not four, not four.
04:56It's going contra-flow, contra-flow.
04:59Shockingly, he turns to go up the wrong side of the bypass
05:02against the flow of traffic.
05:04It is the worst case scenario.
05:07You've got drivers that aren't expecting a van to be coming the wrong way on the bypass
05:11with no lights on.
05:13Despite the vehicle travelling on the wrong side of the road,
05:16Stuart's able to keep it in sight.
05:19It's sheer luck that a collision doesn't happen.
05:23He's able to then exit, so the pursuit continues.
05:26Looping back round the side roads, permission to re-engage.
05:30Here from NA, pursuit continues to be authorised.
05:33I'm slightly concerned around the level of risk that's starting to increase now.
05:38Vehicle still remains lights out.
05:39Permission for tactical contact if it attempts to go contra-flow again.
05:45From CR1, yes, yes, it's all received.
05:47Happy redact tactic.
05:49Vehicle's now gone left, left, left.
05:51Leading 5-0 and a 3-0.
05:54It's quite icy.
05:56I'm just trying to make some ground on the vehicle.
05:58It's quite fed to me.
05:59I'm going to do the loop again.
06:00I'm going to go off-road again.
06:01We go down the same streets, down the same footpath.
06:15Yep.
06:16Confirmed ASICs have gone towards a lot preferred.
06:17I'm going to get quite close up to it for the next roundabout to make sure it doesn't go contra-flow.
06:27The vehicle is at 7-0.
06:28Still lights out towards the roundabout.
06:29Lights are on red.
06:30Temporary high risk.
06:31There's no other vehicles that I can see coming around the roundabout.
06:32The vehicle is slowing, slowing down to 30.
06:33Vehicle stops going contra-flow around the roundabout.
06:34No other vehicles on the roundabout this time.
06:35And he goes the wrong way around the roundabout.
06:49Just as I come around the corner, he collides with his Ford Focus.
06:52the roundabout. No other vehicles on the roundabout at this time. And he goes the wrong way round
06:57the roundabout. Just as I come round the corner, he collides with his Ford Focus. It's a crash,
07:04crash, crash, crash, crash, crash. Got Mel running. With the suspect on the run. From
07:17Victor too, have we got a dog? Other units arrive, including a dog handler.
07:22Burn this way. So if the dog tracks from here, we'll be fine.
07:31Through that gap here. His chance of escape is nil. We've got him surrounded and I think
07:37he knows that as well. He jumps in the canal in an effort to get away.
07:44Yeah, this is our man. And they, from 3-3, confirm this is the male driver. See him running
07:52from the vehicle. Got a police dog right next to us as well mate. Just telling you, in case
07:57you get any ideas. He's given up, he's run out of steam. I've got a aspirin, I've got a aspirin.
08:04You're lucky you're not dead aren't you? And he stinks of booze.
08:07He has said he's had a drink. Oh I got this. You under arrest? Please don't tell me. On suspicion
08:14of dangerous driving, failing to stop for the police. It's necessary to arrest you for
08:19a prompt and effective investigation. Being able to catch the driver that's just done
08:23all these dangerous things and potentially injured somebody that was in another vehicle
08:28that they've collided with is a very good feeling. When we get back to my vehicle, we're
08:32going to do a breath test with you. Depending on the result of that as well, we'll move forward.
08:35All right. Right, machine's ready to go. You breeze through that until I tell you to stop.
08:42And stop. Thank you. So you've blown 60, all right, which is over the limit. Limit being 35.
08:49So you're further under arrest on suspicion of driving whilst over the specified limit.
09:00Okay, you are under investigation because you're suspected of driving a motor vehicle on the road
09:05or public place whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit. So do you agree to provide
09:10two specimens of breath for analysis?
09:12Yeah.
09:13The sort of tactics that he employed in an effort to get away are those that are used by your
09:19organised crime gangs, really hardened criminals, people that are in stolen vans involved in
09:24high-valued crime. Exactly the same as you did before.
09:28Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Keep it going, keep it going. Keep it going like that. Perfect. Keep it
09:32going, keep it going, keep it going, keep it going, keep it going, keep it going, keep it going. Hands up.
09:35Keep it blown 45 and 43, which is over the limit.
09:43To know that he did all that simply because he was over the drink drive limit is unbelievable. It's
09:49crazy. It could quite easily have resulted in a fatality.
09:57Coming up. We just have to go for the vehicle.
10:01When a driver loses control. That's pretty deep. I can hear him.
10:06The race is on to save him. We've got ambulance here. We need to get you out as soon as.
10:11And a distinctive shoplifter. Right leg is missing. A little bit different.
10:17Opens up to the cops. Can't get through any tag.
10:24It's good that he's singing away about how he just takes these tags off.
10:27I know you're receiving our standard three nine.
10:41Dealing with drivers who lose control is a regular job for the traffic cops.
10:46We've had a call from a male. Sounded like he was groaning in pain. Requested an ambulance.
10:55Could be simply a medical episode and he's pulled to the side of the road.
10:59Or it could be an RTC and he's just conscious enough to be able to call us.
11:05Near the end of a 12 hour night shift, PC Lee Ridley is responding to an urgent call.
11:10We've had a shot from a male that's groaning in pain. Saying it's near to the A50.
11:19So yeah, a bit of a strange one. We've kind of got limited light at the minute.
11:23So we'll search as best as we can. And then hopefully they can get back in touch with
11:27them on the telephone and get a better update.
11:30And a tango three nine. Go ahead.
11:37I'm just travelling slowly down to junction one. Then I'll come back and do westbound.
11:44Just keep an eye out for any kind of fresh tracks in the grass at the side of the carriageway.
11:52I'm really worried now. You've got freezing cold temperatures. You can't survive very long if
12:12you're in water, especially approaching sub-zero temperatures. So where they're describing is here.
12:22Oh yeah, there he is.
12:29Yeah, I'm with this vehicle. So it's well off the carriageway. It's gone through a bush. I'm just
12:35making my way to it now. Yeah, it's going to be really difficult.
12:43The water starts here. I reckon it's going to be at least knee deep going in.
12:48We understand they're making contact with somebody in the car. It's just extremely difficult for us to get to it.
12:55It's all thorny bramble bushes. We believe he is, but we don't know how we're going to get to him. I don't really want to go wading in there.
13:06I'm just worried about if any of us go in there. If we start running into problems and I need to know that he's all right. But the same is on to E-mass.
13:15We understand he's talking to E-mass. We just need that firming up. So at least if he's talking,
13:21it kind of lowers the risk level down to him.
13:23There's a massive piece of plywood just on the ground.
13:31The plan is to see if we can stretch it across and get closer to the vehicle without actually going into the water.
13:37Got it, Carl.
13:38Because it's unknown at this stage how deep the water is.
13:41All right, it's me.
13:44That's it? It's one there.
13:46I believe he might be in cardiac arrest, but it's making sense, but it's not confirmed.
13:52The driver's potentially gone into cardiac arrest, and that changes everything in an instant.
13:56We just have to go for it, Carl.
13:58That's pretty deep. I can hear him.
14:02The stakes are unbelievably high. We need to get to that car and get the driver out.
14:06It's only a portion of the smell. I'm well above me leveling water, but I can hear him shout.
14:12You get that initial shock, the freezing cold water kind of kicks in as soon as it goes up near to my waist height.
14:22Hello?
14:27Can you hear me?
14:31Whereabouts are you hurting?
14:33I'm cold.
14:34You're cold? Right. Are you bleeding from anywhere?
14:37I don't think so.
14:38No? I'm going to see. You're in a bit of a predicament here. You're in quite a fair bit of water.
14:47I'm initially kind of taken back by the smell of alcohol coming from the car, but my main priority still,
14:53putting all that aside, is just get some reassurance that he's still with us and get him out of that car as quick as we can.
15:00We've got ambulance here. We need to get you out as soon as, and I might need a bit of help from you.
15:06Will you see you go down backwards so we can get you this way? Can you move your legs?
15:12Move them at all?
15:14Yeah.
15:15I can see that he's submerged in water up to his waist, so he's sat down in this freezing cold water.
15:24He's probably been there at least a good hour as well, so I don't even know if his legs are going to function.
15:28I'm praying that he's got enough strength within him that he can kind of help himself get out the back as I assist him.
15:38Right. I'm going to go into the water next, and then I'm going to stand up.
15:42Right. What I want you to do is crawl towards me. Just keep crawling, keep crawling.
15:49Right. Hold on to my hand because you're waist deep in water here, and then we're going to go this way.
15:54Just mind these prickles, yeah? Just face my colleague. We've got you. I'm going to stand behind you and prop you up.
16:01Anybody else in the car with you before the collision?
16:04No. Just me. Just you.
16:05Just me, mate. Just watch this bramble. It's wrapped around us both. Hang on a sec.
16:14Right. We've got you. You just keep going, yeah?
16:18And I take a three nine. Just an initial assessment. He's come out of the vehicle under his own doing,
16:23so I haven't got major concerns regarding cardiac arrest at this stage. A bit cold and wet, but glad we got him out.
16:30There's just quite major concerns there that he'd gone into cardiac arrest, but yeah, he's out.
16:36He'll get assessed, and then we'll deal with the traffic side of things very shortly.
16:41I'm absolutely saturated way steep now in water.
16:46Sometimes when you have dealings with people that can be angry towards you, there's a lot of hostility
16:53towards police, but you can attend a job and literally within seconds, you're trying desperately
16:58to save somebody's life. That's the reason why we do our job.
17:05He's obviously come off the carriage right here, the fresh tire marks, and then if you look,
17:09there's kind of no further tracks. We're wondering if he's lifted and gone airborne,
17:14and luckily the water managed to stop him going any faster into the trees at the other side,
17:18because they're quite solid thick trees, which I think the water has potentially slowed him down
17:23enough to save him. The fact that he stinks of alcohol, probably that was leading to a bit of the
17:31confusion on the call, the shock of what's happened.
17:33We're at 45 years, so I'm resting on suspicion of driving the road to be able to prescribe
17:37a limit of alcohol.
17:39Alcohol played a part in this collision. Nobody deserves to be involved in a collision.
17:46But these are the consequences, and this is what we deal with day in, day out.
17:51As the driver's been in a collision, he has to be checked at hospital before he can be taken into
17:58police custody. He's a very, very lucky person, I think. The fact that he's ended up walking away
18:05from that will just make sure that he's got no other significant injuries. But that just highlights
18:12another example of how you can end up in a right mess, but luckily he hasn't seriously injured himself,
18:19and seriously injured somebody else.
18:29Got a call from Tesco Cloud. He's had a shoplift at the store. He's tried to do some vodka.
18:35He managed to get the items back. Bell left in this vehicle. He did have a seatbelt on and
18:40had a young Bert child on his knee as well. With up to 400,000 shoplifting offences reported
18:47every year. Tracking down dangerous getaway drivers is a daily challenge for the police.
18:52Dave, I'm just going to check, please. I'm just going to sit on the 619.
18:58Near Chesterfield, traffic cop Jim Payne and Derbyshire's motorbike unit pick up the call.
19:04We just had a report of an attempt shoplifting where they tried nicking £181 worth of vodka.
19:11We want to see if the vehicle's going to another store to try again. He just failed. We've got other
19:15officers checking other supermarkets, and we're just going towards the area where it was last seen.
19:21There may be a child in the vehicle, but really obviously need preventative measures of getting
19:25this vehicle stopped or finding it parked in a car park would be ideal.
19:29Yeah, I've just started it. It's 619 for Chesterfield.
19:35Yeah, proceed. Have we got anybody Chesterfield waiting?
19:38I'm at St. George Roundabout.
19:40Yeah, proceed. Just bear in mind, obviously, the mention of this child in the car as well.
19:44So, the car's been spotted heading into Chesterfield by a motorcyclist.
19:55It's also a motorability vehicle, so it could be interesting because if we can get it,
19:59show it's been used in crime, we can get the car took off and get returned back to motorability.
20:04Yeah, vehicle stopped. Just off the side of the car. Received.
20:10As Jim arrives, motorbike officers are questioning the suspects and confirm there is a young child on board.
20:19I'm going to have a nosy then.
20:25It's just the mail that's insured on it.
20:26Jim checks the description of the suspect who fled the scene.
20:34The offender is quite distinctive.
20:37Described as being white male in his fifties with a black and grey jacket,
20:40grey hoodie, black baseball cap, fairly routine stuff.
20:43Right leg is missing. A little bit different.
20:52Well, that's conclusive then, isn't it?
20:54Well, it's gone in the wheelchair on his own.
20:57It was stopped. It's hard to conceal it.
21:01With the front seat passenger matching the description, he's under arrest.
21:06There's already an information marker apparently on the vehicle for another incident
21:10in relation to possible another shoplifting. So, it's not just a one-off,
21:13it's a course of conduct that they're doing with this vehicle.
21:17The driver's also being taken into custody.
21:20What's he wanted for, though?
21:21Two thefts in a burglary.
21:23Oh, on us?
21:25No, mate.
21:25It's a signer outlet to walk for theft, burglary a call, and another theft at the moment.
21:32Oh, OK.
21:34As far as, actually, that both the mail are wanted.
21:38It's the actual passenger that's been into the shop,
21:41with a wheelchair, and tried stealing the vodka,
21:44and then the drivers wanted a PNC for an unrelated offence, so it's a good stop.
21:51The officers search the car for evidence.
21:55A set of altcroppers here, look.
21:57I think that's your security tag.
21:58Anything like that, didn't it?
22:03That'll get through any tag.
22:05It'd certainly work, wouldn't it?
22:06It'd work like it, but come on, it'd be a bit obvious.
22:08He's got it.
22:09The passenger, who's basically admitted what he's been doing,
22:14he says he's not been using the tool, he's just been snapping them and pulling them off.
22:19So we've arrested the two males from the vehicle.
22:22The driver was wanted from a couple of other forces for other offences,
22:25and the passenger has been arrested on the submission of the theft.
22:29The other passenger and the young child are free to go.
22:32Because the vehicle's been used in crime, we've recovered that.
22:37It's also a motability vehicle, so they've been notified.
22:40Hopefully, they'll then take possession of the vehicle.
22:43Obviously, it's not what the motability scheme's all about.
22:45It's supposed to be to help people get about, you know, that need it,
22:48they've got a disability.
22:50Clearly, the passenger does have a disability, and the fact he's only got one leg.
22:54But, yeah, the idea of giving him a brand-new 73-plate car
22:58isn't for him to go out stealing vodka from Tesco.
23:02Yeah, it's making up.
23:10Coming up, another out-of-control driver
23:17makes a run for it.
23:19Which way's he gone?
23:22I'm not doing that, I think.
23:24Well, I'm going to check. Do you understand?
23:25No.
23:26You don't understand?
23:27And a drunk driver...
23:28Give me your hand.
23:30...turns to violence.
23:31I've warned you, mate.
23:33I'm going to gas you in a minute.
23:34And a Tango 361015, please.
23:52I've got a responsibility to cover the whole county at Arbyshire.
23:55It's important that we know everywhere, but with the same token, you know, working the same
23:59area or same patch, I think it helps as well.
24:03Traffic cop Matt Cooling is on patrol near Chesterfield, looking for dangerous illegal drivers.
24:08The nature of the people that we're going after, you know, they are people that are citing police,
24:13and they're very likely to fail to stop, and that will obviously then engage us in a pursuit.
24:18From an A to all units monitoring this channel, we've just had an ANPR hit for a vehicle.
24:22The driver of this vehicle is showing to have no insurance.
24:24Close by, Stuart Smith is also on the lookout for the suspect car.
24:31How are you?
24:36Yeah, 206, I think she said.
24:38Yeah, I'm behind it.
24:41It's just taking a left towards the ratio.
24:44What are you planning at about?
24:46It's about 60.
24:49There's a car that sits up with no insurance a couple of times tonight, which I've just checked.
24:54It's still showing no insurance.
24:56Stu Smith's now behind it, and it's got a bit of a lick on, apparently.
25:01With a pursuit likely, Stuart needs backup.
25:04Any pursuit is dangerous. We're trying to stop a car, driving at high speeds.
25:09You're always second guessing what they're going to do, and we're trying to stop that vehicle
25:13with the least amount of damage and the least amount of risk to members of the public.
25:17It's estimated that nearly 15,000 police pursuits take place every year.
25:22Sir, it's turned on to the station, Carwood.
25:26Okay, mate.
25:28I think this leads on to the main road again.
25:32Big loop, yeah.
25:33And we've checked it on.
25:34Police computer, still no insurance.
25:37Traffic cop Jim Payne is also closing in on the wanted car.
25:41Don't know if it's come this far or not.
25:45I've cut across, that didn't take Renishal Hill.
25:47It's going left.
25:51We've got to take you back onto the main road through Renishal Hill.
25:53It's going right, right, up the hill.
26:04Approaching the junction ahead, Jim catches up with Stuart.
26:11Yeah, it's making up.
26:12With Jim and Stuart now in pursuit, Matt's still playing catch up.
26:31Sounds like the vehicle's stopped and decamped.
26:41Tango 36, state six.
26:48The wooded area is quite dense.
26:52It looks like it's quite a way over to the next adjoining road.
26:55I think he's gone to the left, Stu.
27:00I think he's got as far as the tree.
27:03We weren't as quick at the cars as what he was.
27:06I could nip around in a plane car to Staley Lane and see if I can...
27:08I know what it looks like.
27:09Yeah.
27:11It's a long way to go, mate, to keep going towards Staley Lane.
27:14He's running in the dark as well.
27:15He's got no light with him.
27:16I'll keep going forward just a bit more then.
27:18He's wearing the grey top, light colour this hair.
27:22Yeah.
27:22Probably our height, slim build, dark trousers.
27:25Yeah.
27:31The driver's decamped.
27:32At the end of the day, if we come across someone walking on here,
27:35it's probably a good chance it's going to be the person we're looking for,
27:37as it's early hours of the morning now.
27:44I've come a good distance up this path.
27:46I'm not going to go any further, mate.
27:47He's likely to be hidden somewhere, isn't he?
27:51Yeah, too far.
27:51I'll start coming back then.
27:54Some more checks have been done and it might be that the registered keepers wanted
27:58fell to appear, which again is another good reason to run off into it.
28:06A dog unit arrives to comb the area for the runaway.
28:09There's a bit of stuff on the side of the towpath then he could have gone into it.
28:19Yeah, quite possibly, mate.
28:20Yeah, there's paths.
28:21It goes right as well, back towards, like, Renneshire.
28:23Not in this way.
28:27Not interested, no.
28:32Obviously, the older the scent gets, the harder it is for him.
28:35Yeah.
28:39Vanished then.
28:41Well, can't say we haven't tried.
28:44We've tracked really as far as we can with the dog, but unfortunately it's not picked up a scent
28:48for the offender that's run off.
28:49Well, no, thanks, mate.
28:50Not at all, yeah.
28:51Thanks for your effort.
28:51Not at all, yeah.
28:52Don't go too far because you never know.
28:54No, I certainly don't.
28:58It's always disappointing when you're literally seconds behind someone and they get away,
29:01but, you know, it's just how it is sometimes, unfortunately.
29:05We'll still send a notice of intended prosecution and a requirement to tell us who the driver is
29:10to the registered keeper.
29:12And the upshot of that is that, you know, if they don't respond to us,
29:15there's a massive fine of six points going to come the way.
29:17Like, something will come of it, you know, one way or the other.
29:20His luck will run out one day and he'll get caught while he's wanted.
29:2915 miles north of Derby, Matt's looking for more out of control drivers.
29:35Over the years, I think you do get a sick sense of when something's not right.
29:38You know, criminals and drink drivers, people who are disqualified from driving.
29:42The telltale signs for me, driving well below the speed limit,
29:45maybe that they're swerving between the lanes or something as simple as not putting the lights on.
29:51You're always going to find that people, you know, unless they're caught,
29:53they're going to keep doing what they get away with.
29:57So we're just going to start showing presence in the area.
30:00This car pulled out ahead of me, it's not got its lights on, it's driving really slowly,
30:08and instantly I'm thinking there's something wrong.
30:10Just have a quick look at it.
30:12NA Tango 361015, please.
30:15Run me that through, please.
30:16Yeah, it's vehicles complied and stopped.
30:26Hey mate, have you been drinking?
30:28Not really, no, I've got it.
30:30Step out of the car for me.
30:33Hey mate, can I get another unit to join me?
30:35I'm just up from Quarry Road.
30:36I'm not sure what I'm on, I think I've got a DRC.
30:38Yeah, that's it.
30:39If we've got any units for you to join, I've got vehicles stopped.
30:43Come and stand out here, mate.
30:45Pretty much straight away, you get the impression that, you know, he's under the influence.
30:49I think you're drinking driving, so I'm going to request a specimen of breath from you.
30:52Okay.
30:53I must explain to you, if you fail or refuse, it's an offence for which you're going to be arrested,
30:56do you understand?
30:58What are you doing?
30:59I'm ending your call because I'm speaking to you.
31:00Yeah.
31:01And you're being rude.
31:02I'm not being rude, you being nasty.
31:04I'm not being nasty.
31:05Yeah, you are.
31:05I don't want you talking on your phone when I'm with you.
31:07Okay.
31:08Okay, so I need you to provide a specimen of breath, do you understand?
31:11Right.
31:11I need to make sure you're not drinking driving.
31:13I'm not doing driving.
31:14Well, I'm going to check, do you understand?
31:15No.
31:16Well, you're driving with no lights for a start.
31:18No lights on?
31:19No, they're not, mate.
31:21What's that, man?
31:22Yeah, at the front they might be, but there's no lights at the back.
31:24Hold on one minute.
31:26Let's just film this.
31:28You can film what you want, but you're coming to this police car in a minute.
31:30Whoa, whoa, whoa, what are you doing?
31:32I'm going to request a specimen of breath from you.
31:34Put your phone down.
31:35No, I'm not putting my phone down.
31:36I'm going to record this.
31:37Just get a unit to me, please.
31:39Are you recording this?
31:40Yeah, it's been recorded.
31:41Yeah, so I can record this then.
31:44Listen to me.
31:45It's that fight or flight moment.
31:46The driver's already shown his level of resistance, so I'm then conscious that, you know,
31:50if we get to the next stage and we've got to arrest him, it's probably going to then turn violent.
31:54Put your phone down.
31:55No, I'm not putting my phone down.
31:56Right, well, at the minute you're under arrest.
31:58For what?
31:59Suspicion of being unfit whilst...
32:01Just give me a hand.
32:03Yeah, er, what are you recording me for?
32:06What are you doing, me?
32:07Mate, I'm going to gas you in a minute.
32:08I suspect you drink driving.
32:09Okay.
32:10Okay, give me your hands.
32:11So why is it so rough then?
32:13Because you're now under arrest, so you're not doing as you're told.
32:15I work by myself and I'm conscious that he's quite a large chap.
32:19If he's not going to comply, I'm going to have some massive issues with him.
32:21Put your phone down.
32:23No.
32:23Put your phone down.
32:24Why do I need to put my phone down?
32:25Because I need to handcuff you.
32:27I'm under arrest.
32:28Yep.
32:29Give me a hand.
32:30Oh, are you being searched?
32:31I'm warning you, mate.
32:33I'm going to gas you in a minute.
32:36Out of nowhere, the driver tries to throw a punch.
32:39Stop resisting.
32:39Ah, give me a hand.
32:40I'm not resisting.
32:41Yes, you are.
32:42I'm not.
32:43You tried to throw a punch at me and I ain't having it.
32:45Put your phone...
32:48Spray!
32:49I'm left with no other option.
32:50It could just be in America, innit?
32:53No, it's not, mate.
32:54It's basically an irritant that we spray, you know, in subjects as eyes.
32:59I sort of end up getting a face fluke myself and I'm struggling then to keep my eyes open
33:03and see what's happening.
33:04I'm in a vulnerable position myself now.
33:06Can you get someone in the hurry, please?
33:07We've got a local unit we're travelling towards the location now.
33:10Oh, it's behind your back.
33:13Where are you?
33:14This copper has just battered me.
33:18And now me and her has arrested me for nothing.
33:23Give me a hand.
33:23He's battered me and sprayed me and everything, babe.
33:28Quick, I found her.
33:29Give me a hand.
33:29I'm not worried.
33:30Why am I putting the phone on?
33:31Because you're under arrest.
33:32I've found her.
33:33Yeah, I told you.
33:34You're under arrest.
33:36After a two-minute struggle, backup arrives.
33:39Just give me another cup.
33:40Put another cup on, Carl.
33:41I've got one on.
33:41What are you doing on my phone?
33:43I've got one on.
33:47There's a massive sense of relief when my colleague's turned up to help.
33:50You know, he's been safely arrested and I'm not injured.
33:54Have you got him, mate?
33:55Yeah.
33:55No, you can't.
33:56And what are you doing?
33:57I'm holding you.
33:58Relax.
33:59Relax.
34:00Relax.
34:05You all right?
34:06Yeah, fine.
34:06I've ended up spraying him on me.
34:08Let's just try to throw a punch.
34:12It takes ten cars.
34:15Are you being serious?
34:17Relax.
34:20It makes me angry that, you know, this bloke's got into a car drunk and then of course he's
34:26took the chance then of going home where he's then been caught and then his reaction then is
34:30to try and assault someone.
34:31You know, it just infuriates me really that that's the driver's attitude.
34:34What are you going to see if I'm operating with the breath test?
34:41I've not had someone trying to assault me for a long, long time and I like to think that's
34:45down to, you know, the way I deal with people and the way that I speak with people but unfortunately,
34:49you know, there's no reasoning with someone that's drunk.
34:51They're unpredictable and volatile and, you know, sadly this night, you know, that's proven.
34:56See if this chat's got some water.
34:59Hey, mate.
35:01Mate, can I ask a favour?
35:02Yeah.
35:03Have you got like a jug of water or anything?
35:05Just pour on me face.
35:06To get behind the wheel of any vehicle when you've had that much to drink is completely
35:10selfish.
35:11It's irresponsible.
35:12You are a ticking time bomb and playing roulette with your life and the life of others on the road.
35:22Coming up.
35:23Still be in here somewhere.
35:25Matt's on the hunt for a gang of thieves.
35:29Targeting farmers and their vehicles.
35:32Yeah, I've got some lights coming towards me.
35:35Over and over again.
35:36Yeah, I've got two off-road motorcycles.
35:40Yeah, followed by a third.
35:41Looks like units, Chesterfield, start making their way for a break in progress, vehicle being stolen.
35:57Looks like units, Chesterfield, start making their way for a break in progress, vehicle being stolen.
36:02So the fenders are still on the farm.
36:05No other details.
36:06So I go 29, I'm route down the bypass.
36:10Traffic cop Matt Cooling is responding to a call from the north of the county.
36:15That's where I'll head myself.
36:20I've had a report of a quad bike that's just been stolen from a farm.
36:25Rural crime is a massive issue in Derbyshire.
36:27There's definitely a market for farm machinery and agricultural machinery.
36:32They're very, very desirable and they're worth a lot of money.
36:34For a minute, just a further update from the woman said that they have gone down the field,
36:39likely on the greenway from Clown.
36:45Right, this is the greenway here.
36:47It's hanging to now. Are they seen riding it or pushing it?
36:54Pushing it.
36:56The offenders have been seen to get onto an old railway line, which is what we're walking towards now.
37:03Just on the off chance it comes up this way, we'll try and intercept it on the path.
37:08It can be daunting going into the dark and it's sort of the unknown.
37:12A number of people that are possibly tooled up, you know, and I'm by myself.
37:18What am I going to do if I'm confronted with these people?
37:24They came out of the farm and then onto the road.
37:27You can get through here.
37:30A seconds unit is searching in the fields nearby.
37:34I wonder if they've come through here, so maybe could still be in here somewhere.
37:42Yeah, I've got some lights coming towards me.
37:49It's my bike.
37:53Yeah, I've got two off-road motorcycles.
37:59Yeah, followed by a third.
38:01They're now generally towards Cresswell.
38:06There was three motorbikes, but I didn't see any VRMs.
38:09The first one was two up and then single riders on the other two.
38:13I've seen no quad though, so I wonder if they've dumped that.
38:16They've not come past on a quad.
38:18They've come past on three motorbikes.
38:24Come on, mate.
38:27Farmers, they've found it.
38:29The quad bike jumped in the field now.
38:31Just going up to it now.
38:32You've got the quad bike.
38:36You've got the quad bike.
38:36They've abandoned it.
38:37And you've found it?
38:38In the other field.
38:38Yeah, they're pushing it.
38:43That was down.
38:44They've broken that off.
38:45Right.
38:46They haven't managed to start it though, have they?
38:48By the looks of it.
38:48No, no.
38:49They broke all the key and everything.
38:51I can't start it.
38:53I'm not starting.
38:55Trying to break in the shed last week.
38:57Yeah.
38:58So, obviously, this is what they're after.
39:01It's a good result that the quad's been found.
39:03The frustrating part is that, you know, obviously,
39:05we've probably seen the four offenders that are responsible.
39:09You know, we've come across them again.
39:12You know, it's doubtful, really.
39:14Following two attempted burglaries in a week,
39:30tonight, the same farm is being targeted again.
39:33You do get people that will target the same place two consecutive nights.
39:37And that's purely based on the fact that they want something.
39:41I think it's pretty brazen trying to steal the same thing again.
39:45Hey, Tune, can you just put me to the job, please?
39:48Right, it's two people on CCTV in the yard.
39:51Looks like they've possibly gone back for another attempt.
39:54This is what I joined the job to do, you know,
39:55is to catch burglars and car thieves.
39:59Sarge, are you happy with a plan if it's similar to last night?
40:02We've got offenders on motorbikes.
40:04Are you happy if we do preemptive sting?
40:09Yeah, understood.
40:10Tune 1 has agreed for up to tactics as best option.
40:14So, Sting is designed to puncture tyres.
40:17It's just done slowly and gradually.
40:19If there's no air in the tyres, it means that they can't keep riding what they're riding.
40:23I'm further up the branch line from 2-1.
40:39Matt sets his trap.
40:42I need to be in a position where they're not going to see me, but I'm going to hear them.
40:50There's always an inherent danger to the officer that deploys a stinger.
40:54Normally, best practice is to do it from hard cover and to be concealed so that person doesn't see you.
40:59You have got to weigh up the dangers that are present.
41:03But, you know, these people don't care.
41:05It's complete tunnel vision, you know.
41:06They are literally just focused on getting away.
41:10But ten minutes later, he's still waiting.
41:13There's no sign of these motorbikes.
41:15There's every possibility that they'll probably come up the path
41:17before the other units got into the location.
41:19We'll, erm, we'll knock it on the head.
41:26Frustrating they've got away.
41:27Hopefully their luck will run out and we'll catch them with the act maybe next time.
41:40An estimated seven and a half thousand accidents occur every year
41:45when drivers lose control of their cars.
41:48I do struggle to understand why people just don't stop.
41:51They probably don't foresee the potential consequences
41:55or that they're making the situation worse for themselves.
41:58But at the end of the day, they're not stopping because they're clearly doing something wrong.
42:01They don't like the situation they're in.
42:03They see that you're the police.
42:05They see that it's game over for the night.
42:07Something could change.
42:08They could decide suddenly that they want to attack you.
42:11They want to escape.
42:12So you've got to be switched on.
42:15People are taking more and more risks than ever before in an effort to get away.
42:20Being able to remove those drivers from the road is very rewarding.
42:24And the fact that we're only chipping away at it and we're getting one at a time.
42:28But that's one less driver that's out there putting people's lives at risk.
42:32We're going down a dead end.
42:38We've got an off-road.
42:39On to...
42:39In this episode...
42:40Crash, crash, crash.
42:42Crash, crash, crash.
42:43I've got a male running.
42:44The failed to stop van driver was sent to prison.
42:48Went this way.
42:50And banned from the roads for drunk and dangerous driving.
42:53He has said he's had a drink.
42:54I got this.
42:55Pretty lucky you're not dead, aren't you?
42:57The wanted suspect who ditched his car and ran into some woods...
43:07Vanished then.
43:08That's how we haven't tried.
43:10...has been sent a notice of intended prosecution and remains under investigation.
43:14If they don't respond to us, there's a massive fine of six points going to come the way.
43:20Whoa, whoa, whoa.
43:21What are you doing?
43:22The drunk driver who punched Matt Cooling...
43:25How you been, Terry?
43:26I'm warning you, mate.
43:27I'm going to gas you in a minute.
43:29...received a community order and was disqualified for driving for 36 months.
43:34You're a punch at me, mate.
43:34I'm in it.
43:37That's pretty deep.
43:38Whereabouts are you hurting?
43:40Cold.
43:40You're cold.
43:41The driver who crashed into a deep pond...
43:45We've got you.
43:45I'm going to stand behind you and prop you up.
43:48...was later released from hospital without serious injury.
43:52I think the water's potentially slowed him down enough to...
43:55...to save him.
43:57Blood tests confirmed he was under the legal limit.
44:05The disabled shoplifter received eight weeks imprisonment for shop theft.
44:10What was he wanted for, though?
44:11Two thefts in a burglary.
44:14But no action was taken against the driver...
44:18...or the registered keeper of the mobility car.
44:21The idea of giving him a brand-new 73-plate car...
44:24...isn't for him to go out stealing vodka from Tesco.
44:30The attendant is still on the farm.
44:34And the thieves who attempted to steal a quad bike from a farm...
44:37...have yet to be tracked down.
44:38But inquiries are ongoing.
44:40This is has been in trouble okay to see Jaeger men.
44:41Much
