00:00Prouder is with us from New York City.
00:03Hey.
00:04Set up that includes a microphone on top of a cardboard box.
00:09This is not a bon voyage.
00:12Josh Appel joins us from his home in Fort Lauderdale, I guess.
00:20Close enough.
00:21I see a office pillow behind him and a Josh Appel Panthers jersey.
00:27And Solana is in Kendall.
00:30Jimmy is in the studios in El Portal.
00:33Before we talk football here with Josh, I always remind you the best place to get geared up with Canes or Dolphins merch is Canesware in Davie or online at canesware.com.
00:43Josh Appel, play-by-play broadcaster for the NFL on Sports USA.
00:46He was on the call Sunday in Arizona.
00:50And I remind you, he's a proud USF grad.
00:54So I'm sure he just wants to move on to Dolphins talk.
00:57We can talk about the game because I got a bone to pick with Solana, okay?
01:01He's huffing and puffing.
01:02Solana's tired of all people USF.
01:04Yeah, I know.
01:05And that's what I have a bone to pick about because he's acting like all of us have thundered in and just been saying all this.
01:10What are we supposed to not be happy that we beat two ranked teams to begin the season?
01:14And then when I was on the show leading up to the game, I had the rational take of, yeah, you know, it's probably not going to happen.
01:20And if I had to guess, it'd probably take Miami to cover.
01:24And Solana ripped me for saying that.
01:27You can't win with this guy.
01:29It's enough.
01:31Congrats on the Shula Bowl, by the way.
01:33Tito Banach, Josh Appel, every USF alum, I'm done.
01:38I'm done with the USF stuff.
01:39I'm done with the Bulls.
01:41You're not from South Florida.
01:42Your university is literally not in South Florida, even though you're called South Florida.
01:47There's no Bulls in South Florida either.
01:49I think we established that after our deep, profound research into the entire background.
01:52No, I think they thought that they were like cattle runs or something.
01:55I don't know.
01:57Oregon Trail.
01:59You can get a burger at a drive-thru.
02:01It's essentially a bull.
02:03I think that was just USF creating those articles just so there makes some sense surrounding their name.
02:10I'm just done with USF.
02:12But, hey, you know what?
02:13Maybe be undefeated around late October, and then we'll take you seriously.
02:18But enough.
02:19Third week of the season, USF's the best team in the nation.
02:23Watch out.
02:24I cannot listen to an argument between the USF guy and the guy who's celebrating winning a credenza during the Shula Bowl over the weekend.
02:35I mean, there's no winners in this argument.
02:38I mean, just both of you.
02:41Great, great, great 41-0 loss at Penn State, by the way.
02:44Really good stuff by FIU.
02:46Great, great shutout loss you guys had.
02:50Covered.
02:51Zero back.
02:52You can put that gambling ticket with the points right in that armoire.
02:58All right, I got to move on.
03:03Did USF cover?
03:04I don't think USF covered, Hawk.
03:05I don't think they did.
03:06I can't take it.
03:07Is the clock ticking on Mike McDaniel, Josh?
03:11And when I say the clock ticking, I mean, has the train left the station and there is no turning back?
03:18Well, I feel like we're moving through the phases that lead up to a coach getting fired, right?
03:24We had, all right, this offseason, big culture change.
03:27We got rid of the problems.
03:28The guys are staying late after practice.
03:30We've figured everything out.
03:32We've got rid of the problem, people.
03:34And then week one, they're making all the same mistakes they made the first three years under Mike McDaniel.
03:38They get blown out by Daniel Jones, who apparently is now the second coming of Peyton Manning for the Indianapolis Colts with Shane Steichen over there.
03:45And then after that, the Dolphins hold a players-only meeting where Albert Breer, I think earlier today, said it was basically like, hey, the NFL doesn't care who the coaches are.
03:56The NFL doesn't care what you put on tape.
03:58So you guys got to be accountable to each other.
03:59And then after week two, when they lose to the Patriots, first time Tua Tungavailoa has been 0-2 in his career with the Dolphins, first time he's lost to the Patriots in general, Mike McDaniel, fake taking the blame and blaming assistants and the players for lack of communication.
04:12Tua Tungavailoa in the press conference, blaming his head coach and everybody else for the lack of communication and calling the end-of-game situation basically that they bungled it.
04:23So again, I feel like we're just going through the phases of what leads up to a head coach getting fired.
04:28And if the Dolphins get blown out on Thursday, which I would imagine we're all expecting to happen, I cannot imagine that Mike McDaniel was coaching against the Jets in week four.
04:38Now, if they show some fight and make it a close game and they miraculously pull out a win or they lose a close game, maybe Mike McDaniel buys himself some time.
04:48But this is trending, no doubt about it, towards him being the first fall guy here early in the season.
04:55And Stephen Ross isn't a guy who likes to do these mid-season coaching changes, hasn't done it since Joe Philbin.
05:00And Josh, we watch football, you call games, like you really watch games.
05:05This two-minute process, is it honestly as embarrassing as it looks or as it feels when you're watching it?
05:13Because who gets delay of games and false starts and 12-minute huddle?
05:19Like, have you seen this before?
05:22And to your point, it's four years in.
05:25I cannot believe that Devon HN scored.
05:30They had like a minute and a half, two-minute review.
05:33And they were still confused on what they were going to do after that.
05:38Like, how does that happen?
05:40You've been, this has been majority, I'm pretty sure, aside from like an assistant here or there, the same staff going on four years now.
05:49You've got the quarterback who's been in the system for four years.
05:52You have players who are familiar.
05:53Well, I guess Tyreek said he wasn't all that familiar with the system in the offseason, but that's a whole other conversation to have.
05:59Like, I don't understand how it could look that incompetent.
06:02Normally, in two-minute drives, the type of incompetence you see is similar to what the Bucs did last night, where they're letting 20 seconds roll off the clock, ended up working out for them.
06:11But they had two timeouts left, and the clock's just running around 30 seconds, and they burn a bunch.
06:16And like, that's the kind of incompetence you see.
06:18But like, that was so, like, I think Solana said it yesterday.
06:21Like, that is like the perfect encapsulation of Miami Dolphins football under Mike McDaniel.
06:27You're like, right there, Achan's out by like six inches, the long review, you get a procedure penalty there for having too many men in the huddle, then a false start, and it goes from thinking you just took the lead with your favorite pass, the swing to Devon Achan, to a second and 20, and then a little six-yard dump, and then Tua tries to extend the play.
06:49And Larry Borum gets run around on the right side of the offensive line.
06:52That was Tua trying to extend the play?
06:54That was earlier on the drive.
06:55That's what that was?
06:56Yeah, I texted this to you last night, and like, I almost feel free now, and it's probably rich coming from me because I've defended Tua Tungabaloa for so long.
07:08But when I had, he was making up for his deficiencies by his elite anticipation, his elite accuracy, and lack of turnovers.
07:17Well, we're not seeing that.
07:20He was definitely better against the Patriots on Sunday than he was in week one.
07:23There's no doubt about it.
07:24He threw for 300 yards and a couple of touchdowns.
07:26But, I mean, the miss to Tyreek Hill over the middle late in the fourth quarter.
07:31I think I texted Hock and Whitty.
07:32I said, yeah, but a great throw if Tyreek Hill was 11 feet tall.
07:38He's not making up for his deficiencies with what he's actually good at.
07:41And so him being unable to get out of the pocket and extend plays, like, it's even more glaring.
07:49I said last time I was on the show that he just looks like a different quarterback.
07:52Remember the Ravens comeback?
07:54I don't know how you could forget it.
07:55A few years ago.
07:56The game-winning touchdown, Tua was spinning out of the pocket, extending the play, and finding Jalen Waddell in the end zone.
08:02Again, a completely different player two or three years later.
08:06And I'm watching Baker Mayfield, and I'm watching Justin Hurd, and I'm watching Geno Smith.
08:11All these quarterbacks around football, except for, like, Joe Flacco.
08:14And they're all able to extend plays.
08:16They're all able to make these reads where, like, all right, if I have to move, I've got to move.
08:19With Tua, these are choppy steps.
08:21He's got, like, cinder blocks for cleats.
08:23And it's just hard to watch.
08:26And it's even more glaring now that his supposed strengths don't look like strengths anymore.
08:32It's funny because people were lighting us up on our YouTube comments yesterday because Hawk Crowder and I were saying,
08:39Tua has the ability to get out of the pocket.
08:42He just won't.
08:42And it's almost like he's been hardwired not to.
08:45And people are like, what are you talking about?
08:47He can't move.
08:48He can't do this and that.
08:49And it's like, bro, that 2022 game, week two in Baltimore, the touchdown earlier, not the game-winning one.
08:55Tua's getting out of the pocket, hits Waddle in the back of the end zone.
08:57Like, he has the ability.
08:58He just won't.
08:59But Appel, we were laughing about it earlier.
09:01The idea that Anthony Weaver is going to take over this football team.
09:04What have you seen from Anthony Weaver?
09:06And I'm not trying to hate on the guy.
09:08I think, you know, there's massive holes in the secondary.
09:10But what have you seen that makes you believe, okay, you lose in Buffalo.
09:14McDaniels, the fall guy.
09:16Weaver's turning this season around.
09:17I don't buy that.
09:19I don't think the season is turnaroundable regardless of who they make the eventual interim head coach if it gets to that.
09:26Like, I'm thinking, like, is Frank Smith going to be the guy?
09:29I know Darryl Bevel has been an interim head coach before.
09:33But Anthony Weaver is viewed around the league as an up-and-coming future head coach.
09:38He didn't get interviews this past offseason for other jobs just as a candidate.
09:44So I wouldn't be surprised if he was the guy.
09:47I read something earlier today that he is one of the most respected guys on the staff amongst his fellow staff members, people in the building, and, of course, the players as well.
09:58So it's hard for me to evaluate what's going on with that defense when the defensive back situation, particularly at corner, is what it is.
10:07But at the same time, like, you're not getting production out of the front seven, which we've beat this dead horse for a while.
10:14Like, that was supposed to be the strength of this defense.
10:17And, like, I haven't seen a lot from, like, Zach Seeler in the first couple of games.
10:22Bradley Chubb has a couple of sacks.
10:23But, like, outside of that, like, there haven't been a lot of standout performances.
10:28And then after week one, we're talking about, well, where's Willie Gay?
10:31Why isn't Willie Gay playing?
10:33What do you play, like, two or three plays on defense on Sunday and made two great plays and didn't see the field on defense the rest of the game?
10:39I don't know what's going on there, but I like listening to Anthony Weaver talk.
10:46I know that the bar is low, considering, well, you got to win games in the NFL to win.
10:53You can't lose to win, whatever the quote was.
10:55I'm hoping they bring in Romeo Cronell.
10:58That's always the sign of a good turnaround for me, any team that brings in Romeo Cronell.
11:05Hey, man, Willie Gay's been shadow banned.
11:08I don't know what's going on there.
11:10They shadow banned him.
11:11They shadow banned him.
11:11Arande's been shadow banned by Jim Harbaugh.
11:14And then the Dolphins have shadow banned Willie Gay.
11:19Something that, when this is a phrase that's not said a lot, Josh,
11:24something that Hawk and myself and Solana agree on, I think we have talent.
11:29But I don't know if we have the talent because, like, there's no plays being made.
11:36I call it math changers.
11:38Guys that you're one-on-one.
11:40You stop him from catching the ball.
11:42You change the math on that play.
11:44I don't know if we have many guys that affect plays that they are, I guess,
11:50not supposed to make and make.
11:52Because even the sacks they're talking about, even the run plays that the Patriots,
11:56the Patriots run is straight downhill.
11:57And our amazing, game-changing front seven was letting Ramondre Stevenson go for eight yards
12:06a carry sometimes.
12:07It was crazy.
12:09Yeah, watching Tyrell Dodson be seven yards behind Stevenson on a wheel route late in the game.
12:15Yeah, it's certainly disappointing because they were a lot better last year.
12:19And I think why we think this team has so much talent is because we've seen a lot of these guys
12:24make those game-changing types of plays before.
12:28And that's what's so confusing about how they look right now.
12:32We've seen it before.
12:33It's just not coming to fruition now.
12:35And to me, Crowder, you might know this better than I do.
12:39I don't know the ins and outs of everything.
12:41But to me, that's those guys not being put in positions to make those plays, right?
12:47We talk about Tyree Kill not having a 30-yard catch since week one of last year.
12:52Is that on Tyree Kill?
12:53Obviously, he had the 47-yarder on Sunday.
12:56But is that on Tyree Kill?
12:57Is that on Tua Tunga-Vailoa?
12:58Or is that on the scheme that can't get him open and they can't produce those types of plays?
13:03Is this on defense guys being out of position?
13:06Because who knows?
13:08I don't know if they're being put in the right spots to make the types of plays now
13:12that we've seen them make in the past.
13:13It just feels like this team right now, schematically, is out of answers.
13:17We were talking yesterday.
13:19It was your friend Kyle Long.
13:21You know, you got beignets with him in New Orleans.
13:23Yeah.
13:24But he was talking about they've got talent, but they're not talented.
13:27And Crowder had said, you can go buy great ingredients,
13:31but if you don't have a great chef, if I'm the guy cooking the ingredients,
13:35you're going to end up with, you know, mushy whatever,
13:39because I don't know how to do anything but boil it and water.
13:42Well, if he ended up with mushy peas, I think Hawk would like that.
13:45I wish mushy peas would be a thing here in the States.
13:49Now, Josh Appel, because we're going to run out of time here.
13:52Josh Appel is going to join us Thursday for our Hockman Burger feast
13:56at Tucker Duke's in Deerfield Beach.
13:59Me, Crowder, Twan Russell, Arande Gadsden, I think Solana's coming,
14:06Jimmy's iffy on it.
14:08We're all going to meet at Tucker Duke's Thursday at 1130 before the show
14:12and have Hockman burgers.
14:15Appel texted me yesterday.
14:17Yeah, I'm coming, but I'm just going to get a plain cheeseburger.
14:22And I said, no.
14:24I mean, you can.
14:25Tucker Duke's will make you whatever you want,
14:26but I'm not paying for a plain cheeseburger.
14:28I'll buy your Hockman burger.
14:30I'm not buying you a plain cheeseburger.
14:33So what are your plans for Thursday?
14:35The Hockman burger has Fritos.
14:37Which part do you object to?
14:39It's got Fritos.
14:40It's a half pound burger.
14:42It's got Fritos, chili, sour cream, shredded cheddar, and raw onion.
14:48What part are you objecting to?
14:51It's the sour cream.
14:52The sour cream scares me.
14:53And I'm not a big beans guy.
14:55I don't like beans, but I'll deal with the chili.
14:57It's the sour cream.
14:59Interesting.
15:00What do you like?
15:02You're scared of sour cream.
15:04Yes.
15:05You don't put it on anything?
15:06Because sour cream happens to be a delightful addition to just about anything.
15:10A little zesty mix.
15:13Yeah.
15:13I get the looks I get when I go to a Mexican restaurant.
15:17It looks like it when I go to a Mexican restaurant, and I get the fajitas,
15:20and they bring that little side thing with the lettuce and the pico and the sour cream,
15:23whatever, and when they come to get everything else, and everything on that plate,
15:27except for the sour cream is used.
15:28Is it because it has sour in the title?
15:32Is it off-putting because it says sour?
15:35Yeah.
15:36And just the texture thing, and I'm imagining it with all that together and messy,
15:41and I'm just out.
15:42I'm out on sour cream.
15:43I hope you guys enjoy it.
15:44I'm glad you do, but I'm out.
15:45You like guacamole, though?
15:47Because it's even thicker.
15:48Same texture.
15:50Yeah.
15:50Hmm.
15:50Yeah.
15:52Depends.
15:53Yogurt?
15:53Because I can understand not seeing it get taken out of the thing.
15:59What does it come in?
16:00Like the little can or whatever.
16:01But it comes in a crudenza.
16:04A can with a can of sour cream.
16:05Or an F-R-U and F-I-U helmet on the sour cream.
16:08In the thing that it comes in.
16:12But, Appel, it's already in the burger.
16:13You won't even see the dollop.
16:15So it just gets squished in.
16:16It gets mixed in.
16:17It's going to be delicious.
16:19Yeah, but I'll know it's there.
16:21And that's really all that's out.
16:24Do I still qualify for the meal if I get it without sour cream?
16:28I don't know if we should just completely uninvite him.
16:31I don't forget about him.
16:32Never mind.
16:32We're not going anymore, Josh.
16:35Hey, change of plan.
16:37We're going to Pollo Tropicale and meet us around noon.
16:41All right.
16:44Well, I guess if you do everything but the sour cream, I'd like you to order sour cream on the side at least.
16:52I'd like to see it on your plate.
16:53Sure.
16:54Darn it.
16:55Then I'll pay.
16:56All right.
16:56We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
16:58We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:00We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:00We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:01We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:02We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:03We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:04We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:05We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:06We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:07We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:08We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:09We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:10We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:11We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:12We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke.
17:13We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke Duke.
17:13We'll see you Thursday at the Tucker Duke Duke.
