00:03Today we're talking about a fascinating topic.
00:06The Sigma, a V2L aircraft for private use with over 1,600 horsepower,
00:11which some already consider to be the hypercar among vertical takeoff and landing vehicles.
00:19The Sigma is being developed by Alto Volo, a London-based company that, unlike many others,
00:24isn't concentrating on air taxis or mass transit, but rather on personal flight.
00:30A vertical takeoff and landing aircraft that looks like an exclusive vehicle
00:33and can be operated from driveways, yachts, or even rooftops.
00:40Currently, the Sigma only exists as a scale model, but it has already successfully completed flight tests.
00:48Alto Volo is currently working on a fully functional, life-size demonstrator.
00:53At just over 4 meters long, almost 5 meters wide, and around 1.6 meters high,
00:59the aircraft fits into the dimensions of a larger car.
01:03When folded, its width is reduced to just 2.2 meters, significantly increasing parking options.
01:11Concrete details about the complete propulsion unit are not yet available,
01:15especially not regarding battery capacity or the type of combustion engine that will be used in hybrid mode.
01:21What is certain, however, is that four engines are mounted on four waynes,
01:26producing a combined output of over 1,600 horsepower.
01:31The engines utilize a patented, tiltable jet design with integrated aerodynamics
01:37that enables both vertical and horizontal flight.
01:39During takeoff and landing, the system utilizes the short-term high-power output of the batteries,
01:48while for longer distances, either electric operation or a liquid-fuel-powered engine can be used.
01:55Another advantage of the propulsion concept is noise reduction.
01:59According to the manufacturer, the Sigma is up to 80% quieter than an average helicopter.
02:06This corresponds to a noise level of up to 70 decibels at an altitude of 100 meters.
02:13The Sigma was designed to carry a total of three people,
02:16a pilot seated centrally in the front and two passengers in the rear.
02:20With a maximum payload of 270 kilograms, the aircraft weighs a total of just 980 kilograms.
02:29The performance data is also impressive.
02:33The maximum speed is around 470 kilometers per hour.
02:38The hybrid range is about 820 kilometers.
02:41On pure electric power, approximately 420 kilometers is possible,
02:46significantly more than many competing models.
02:48In addition, the Sigma can hover for up to 15 minutes and reach an altitude of around 3,000 meters.
02:56Numerous safety features contribute to civilian use,
02:59including thrust vector stabilization,
03:02a triple redundant control system,
03:04and a ballistic parachute that deploys at an altitude of just 15 meters.
03:10Although the Sigma must be controlled by a pilot,
03:13it is still unclear what type of pilot's license will be required.
03:16An autonomous system is also on board.
03:21Developed by the Spanish company I.M.BEN,
03:24which is also responsible for Amazon's drone deliveries,
03:27there is currently no information on its exact functions.
03:32Alto sees the Sigma as an alternative to both long-haul aircraft and helicopters,
03:37focusing on its ability to operate in residential areas.
03:40It is unclear exactly when the aircraft will be launched.
03:45As with many startups in this segment, there remains a residual risk.
03:51Nevertheless, in May 2025,
03:53Alto Volo announced that qualified customers would have the opportunity to pre-register for a launch edition starting in July.
