00:00Welcome to our latest video from the Car Magazine Tuning Blog, in which we take a detailed look at the Toyota Prius.
00:14You can find the link to read the article in our magazine in the video description.
00:20The Toyota Prius, which is considered a pioneer among hybrid vehicles, is now only available in Europe as a plug-in hybrid in its current 5th generation.
00:30This new version is not only more visually appealing, but also has a larger battery and an impressive 100hp more power than its predecessor.
00:39Visually, the new Prius is likely to make a positive impression on many people.
00:44The shape of the vehicle is pleasing and dynamic, almost like a small sports coupe.
00:49Toyota has spared no effort in terms of technology.
00:53The Prius is now only available in Europe as a plug-in hybrid.
00:56The simple hybrid, whose battery cannot be charged from a power outlet and can therefore only be driven electrically for very short distances, is no longer available in this country.
01:09The body of the new Prius has shrunk to an impressive 4.60m, which makes it appear more aerodynamic and elegant.
01:16Based on the second generation of Toyota's TNGR platform, the flatter silhouette combined with the lower center of gravity enables improved driving dynamics.
01:29The body has also become 30% stiffer and, although the Prius has been significantly upgraded in terms of equipment,
01:36the vehicle's curb weight has remained pleasingly low at 10,592 kg.
01:40The overall length of the Prius has been reduced by almost 5 cm, while the wheelbase has been extended by the same amount.
01:50This advantage in the wheelbase ensures that those sitting in the back can enjoy very good legroom.
01:57People who are 1.850 m tall can theoretically still stretch out their 2 m long legs comfortably.
02:04However, the steeply sloping roofline limits the space in the second row of seats.
02:12Even from a height of 1.80 m, the head comes into contact with the roof lining, which somewhat limits the teardrop-shaped design.
02:21In the front, the Prius offers generous space.
02:24The front seats can be pushed back far enough so that people up to 2 m tall can also sit comfortably.
02:34The headroom is also sufficient for people up to 2 m tall.
02:40However, when getting in, you should make sure to tuck your head in a bit and squeeze in slightly to avoid unpleasant bumps.
02:46According to the factory specifications, the trunk of the new Prius is 284 L.
02:54This makes it tight for a longer trip with 4 people.
02:58However, if you remove the cover and use the storage space up to the roof, the volume increases to 390 L, which is about the same as 5 crates of drinks.
03:06If you fold down the rear seat and limit yourself to the storage space up to the lower edge of the window, up to 675 L can be stowed away, while the volume up to the roof increases to 120 L.
03:22There is an additional 10 L of storage space under the trunk floor, which can be used optimally for the charging cable.
03:30Toyota has also made some changes to the interior.
03:32The interior is predominantly black, although the quality of the materials is rather average.
03:41The new positioning of the instruments is noticeable.
03:44They are now located behind the steering wheel and no longer in the middle of the cockpit as in the previous model.
03:50They are designed as small digital screens.
03:54There is another display in the center console, which seems rather small by today's standards.
03:59It houses the navigation system, the entertainment system, and various settings, and is intuitive to use.
04:09One positive aspect is that the air conditioning is still controlled via physical buttons and switches.
04:14One weak point is that many functions are located in the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and therefore have to be set using the steering wheel buttons.
04:26More complex settings, such as fine-tuning the RCC Adaptive Cruise Control, are therefore rather laborious and not very user-friendly.
04:33The operation of the automatic gear shift lever has also changed.
04:39To engage reverse gear, you first have to take a detour via the drive position, which feels unusual and not particularly intuitive to say the least.
04:47We were pleasantly surprised by the significantly improved hybrid drive of the current Toyota Prius.
04:55The previously used 1.8L petrol engine on the front axle has been replaced by a more powerful 2.0L combustion engine.
05:02The key innovation, however, is the electric motor, which has been boosted from 72 horsepower to an impressive 163 horsepower.
05:10This makes the electric motor much more powerful than the built-in combustion engine and can handle the performance requirements much better and, in most cases, without the assistance of the combustion engine.
05:24The result is that you drive much more often in pure, almost silent electric drive.
05:31In addition, the accelerator pedal has to be pressed down very far for the combustion engine to engage.
05:36In everyday life, this means that there are considerably fewer situations in which the drive with the continuously variable transmissions suddenly sounds strained and causes annoying noises.
05:49There is no question that the drive comfort is many times higher than in the previous model and the performance has also increased significantly.
05:56With an impressive 223 horsepower system output, the improvements are noticeable in every driving situation.
06:02In purely electric mode, the top speed is limited to 135 kilometers per hour.
06:09With the combustion engine engaged, the Prius can reach up to 177 kilometers per hour.
06:16This limitation in electric mode makes sense, as it is completely sufficient on the one hand and optimizes consumption on the other.
06:24The driver can also influence the operating strategy of the hybrid system.
06:28He can let the Prius decide for himself how the two drives are used, maintain the electric charge level or drive purely electrically.
06:38The larger proportion of purely electric driving naturally also requires a higher amount of energy.
06:44This is provided by a battery that has been increased from 8.8 to 13.6 kWh and offers a 50% higher energy density.
06:52The battery is charged stationary via cable in the carport, while driving by the combustion engine and the recovered braking energy.
07:03A small part of the charge is also provided by the optional solar roof, which provides additional energy.
07:10Toyota promises an electric range of up to 86 kilometers under favorable external conditions,
07:15i.e. with a fuel-efficient driving style and outside temperatures of around 20 degrees.
07:20The optional solar roof should be able to generate up to 8.7 kilometers of free range per day under ideal conditions.
07:29The combined consumption of just 1.7 liters of gasoline and 11.5 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers illustrates the enormous fuel-saving potential of the plug-in hybrid.
07:41The pure power consumption in electric mode is 17.7 kWh per 100 kilometers.
07:47The charging losses.
07:51This is an extremely good value for a plug-in hybrid and even for an electric car.
07:57On the other hand, if you drive with an empty battery in the standard activated hybrid mode,
08:02the average gasoline consumption is 4.8 liters of premium per 100 kilometers, which is also very efficient.
08:08The Prius does not punish a lack of charging discipline with high fuel consumption, which is often the case with other plug-in hybrids.
08:17The current generation of the Prius also masters its flagship discipline, energy saving, with flying colors.
08:23The energy recovery can be adjusted in three stages, which determines how hard the Prius brakes when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator.
08:33The choice of stage is more a question of personal taste than efficiency.
08:41The most energy-saving approach continues to be a slow and steady driving style, where the accelerator and power are applied or reduced in anticipation.
08:49The increased power of the electric motor, greater electric driving proportions and a significantly more refined four-cylinder combustion engine are among the key improvements of the new Prius.
09:02However, the chassis has also undergone significant development.
09:06The suspension now reacts much more sensitively to uneven road surfaces, which significantly increases driving comfort.
09:12At the same time, the driving stability is impressive in terms of both safety and dynamics.
09:20In terms of assistance systems, the Prius already offers a wide range of active safety features in the basic version.
09:28This includes, for example, the so-called Predictive Efficient Drive System, which analyzes the driver's daily routes and driving style and suggests optimizations accordingly.
09:38Semi-automatic and remote-controlled parking are also possible.
09:44In addition, the Prius warns of impending collisions, objects in the blind spot, approaching traffic from behind, when opening the doors and of obstacles in the target lane when changing lanes.
09:57The Prius Emergency Braking System works at both low and high speeds and initiates emergency braking as soon as a collision is imminent.
10:04The system also intervenes when reversing, which represents real added value, especially in Thai parking spaces or unclear situations.
10:16The standard adaptive cruise control provides greater comfort on long journeys and noticeably relieves the driver.
10:22The price for the new Toyota Prius starts at âŹ45,290 for the basic version.
10:31Alternatively, there are two higher-quality equipment lines called Executive and Advanced to choose from.
10:37Even the entry-level model offers extensive standard equipment, including a keyless entry system, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, a rear-view camera and a variety of assistance systems.
10:48Even if the price of the Prius seems high at first glance, this is put into perspective by the comprehensive standard equipment.
10:58However, it is not a bargain.
11:01For buyers who previously only accepted the Prius because of its low fuel consumption, despite its lack of dynamics and appearance that took some getting used to, the new model now offers a completely different perspective.
11:12The significantly improved driving dynamics and appealing design make the Prius an attractive choice and justify the higher price.
