00:00Today we're talking about how to get the perfect slice out of cakes and pies.
00:04These are some of my favorite ways to do it as a food stylist.
00:06You're going to either have to have a serrated knife, chef's knife, smaller
00:10paring knife, scissors, and a few different spatula options to be able to pull your cakes
00:15and pie slices. Having some hot water to be able to put your knives in is going to be very,
00:20very helpful for certain kinds. Get your blade nice and warm, dry that off.
00:25What we're going to do is make three slices and I'll show you why.
00:28What that's going to do is give you some wiggle room to be able to take one of these pieces out.
00:33We're actually able to kind of get our spatula underneath it perfectly, get a very nice slice.
00:37Now that we're switching over, apple pies, things that are going to have a crust on top,
00:41that's when you want to bust out the serrated knife. That's going to help you get through the crust
00:45and not have to sit and fight the whole thing. Now we have these three slices. You go in to pull
00:50this out, it's giving you some wiggle room to be able to get this in here in the right way.
00:53Another useful trick is going to be taking some scissors and actually putting in a few slices
00:59onto the aluminum foil. This now gives you the opportunity to peel this back and in some cases,
01:07take out the entire cake and then take your slices from there. Another trick you're struggling cutting
01:12through the top of certain cakes and pies is actually taking your scissors and using scissors to
01:16cut a lot of this. You can just follow along just like you were using a knife and cut this way.
01:21To recap, remember the rule of three. Always do three slices before you start pulling pieces out.
01:26Pick the right tool for the right job and hopefully this will help take out the stress for your holiday table.
