00:14Many Australians are discovering rural life and making the move.

00:20So I'm on the hunt to help everyday Australians find their perfect country house.

00:30Welcome back to beautiful Bendigo.

00:35Today's buyers, Phil and Kate, they are just in love with the lifestyle here and who can blame them?

00:41They are so proud to have raised their children here.

00:44But now that their children are growing up, they know that they need to shift their home life, but they don't want to move away.

00:50So with a budget of around about $2 million, we're going to have some fun shaking things up for them today in Bendigo.

01:12Thank you for bringing me back to Bendigo on such a beautiful day.

01:16Tell me a little bit about why you love this area because you actually live on this very street, don't you?

01:22We do.

01:23Yes.

01:24We love the historic houses.

01:26We love the community.

01:27We love the big wide streets.

01:29It's just so close to town.

01:31There's so much to do.

01:32It's beautiful.

01:33Beautiful cafes nearby.

01:34We've got the art gallery.

01:35It's just a great central location.

01:37I'm born and bred Bendigo.

01:42I moved to Bendigo 25 years ago and then went to a party, got a mutual friend and met Phil.

01:48From there, we've raised three children, lived in Bendigo all that time.

01:53You know, love Bendigo.

01:54You know, it's a great place to raise children.

01:56You know, got all the city amenities but it's got that country feel and we really like the region.

02:02Our house that we renovated over the 25 years is now a bit dated and needs to be re-renovated but we don't really know if we've got the energy to re-renovate a house.

02:12So, we were looking around to see what else was available, all done or that we could have more energy to put into.

02:19We really prefer four bedrooms. Kate works from home so if there was an area where Kate could continue on with the business and we really like our pools.

02:29So, if there was a swimming pool then that's a big tick.

02:32We prefer to stay in the city. We like to walk our dogs in the morning, get a coffee, walk around, go to cafes, restaurants.

02:39We really like the inner city living.

02:41We do like renovating houses and I'm happy to put the effort into a new house but, yeah, turnkey would be a bonus.

02:48We're willing to spend anywhere up to two and a half million dollars.

02:53So, if it comes in less that's a bonus but for the right property we're willing to pay top dollar.

03:04Vendigo is found around about two hours drive north of Melbourne, right in the heart of Victoria.

03:10I find myself returning here all the time.

03:13It is just such a sought after magical town, nestled in Victoria's gold fields, famous for its wool.

03:20Vendigo just seems to have this wonderful blend of historic charm with a modern creative flair that is hard to resist.

03:28It's no surprise to me why Kate and Phil are so proud to call this town home.

03:33So this first one, Belgravia, dates back to 1884 and you can already see we are right next to almost within touching distance to the iconic cathedral.

03:47Yeah, it's beautiful.

03:48I love the iron gate at the front, the cottage garden, looking up to the facade of the house.

03:53You know, it's got those real Victorian and period features that we're looking for.

03:57That was a really good first impression.

03:59Okay, let's head on in.

04:14A lovely living area here with a beautiful fireplace.

04:18But I really want to show you where the house opens up.

04:23Oh, beautiful.

04:26It's really done really well.

04:28Just the quality as well.

04:30Just the chevron floors.

04:32Love the skylights.

04:33The iron doors are sensational.

04:35The kitchen.

04:36A lot of effort has gone into the planning and the execution is sensational.

04:41I know you love your character, so have they kept enough for you?

04:45Oh, absolutely.

04:46Yeah.

04:47So, you know, just the hallway.

04:48With the fireplace and everything there and the hallway, it's beautiful.

04:51Walking in, it was just totally unexpected to be so modern, beautifully done.

04:56I was really impressed with the flooring.

04:58I love the iron doors.

04:59I love the skylight.

05:01It just made me want to keep looking.

05:04Considering Belgravia was built before the cathedral, you look straight out.

05:12And so the atrium there is a true design piece.

06:31that epic view it's a million dollar view that is we have the full barbecue area this is totally

06:37unexpected and you love your pool yeah i love it i could imagine being in the pool with some drinks

06:44that view overnight time out here yeah it's really lovely this is a great spot that backyard was

06:50amazing it just blew my mind it was so totally unexpected with the cathedral

06:54the pool the outdoor kitchen being able to sit in the pool have some beers have a champagne

07:00yeah and just taking that view what do you think is on the market for i'm thinking 1.7 to 1.75 maybe

07:33yeah it is actually 1.75 you did a good job guessing the price pretty reasonable that's exactly what i'd

07:40expect for this area in this location okay you ready for house number two it's probably different

07:48but i love it absolutely let's go

08:01okay well this is the original house on the hill this home dates back to the 1860s i know that you

08:07have your head around heritage home so don't you yeah you will understand when i say they've just

08:12had approval to paint the exterior now you can leave the front like that if you like that character

08:18i think we'll change that i think a painting i can imagine when it's all painted and all restored

08:24and everything else and the garden was lovely the size of the house as well as evident

08:30i'm not really sure where to start so in we go

08:43so through from the conservatory i really love that paint at the moment these are four bedrooms the main

08:50bedroom is there bathroom there but this is the main living area and i'm in love with it what about you

08:58i am too i think it's gorgeous all these ideas are going through my head how you'd use the space

09:03and everything you've got this veranda that informs the entire spine of the home it's so cozy and so

09:12warm and inviting just really a really lovely spot and it's really got that country farmhouse feel

09:18you're feeling good as you as you come in here it's a really lovely vibe this house has got

09:23although we're in the middle of town it feels like you could be on 100 acres on the middle of a large

09:28farm with that veranda down the side it's beautiful go and see what you think of the kitchen and when

09:35you're ready i'll see you outside perfect lovely wonderful let's go

09:44oh this is nice great kitchen beautiful i love the island and the stone it's really lovely it's so

09:51bright and airy yeah and it's got that farmhouse country feel which sort of flows on from a living

09:57area it's just a really great space and look out there to the garden as well it's really nice i

10:02really like it yeah i do too there's no lacking of space really there's just so much potential and

10:09a lot you could do here absolutely there is let's go check out the backyard let's see katrina

10:24okay whoa we have a lot to talk about there's a lot happening with this property

10:31we have your pool get those creative juices flowing a previous owner got overly excited and created a

10:39full-blown studio here there's a bunk area up the top there is another bedroom on the side

10:45look at that accent perfect for my dog grooming business but it'd be perfect for family

10:49it'd be perfect for lots of things yeah my mind yeah it's really surprising how large it is and it's

10:55beautifully done with the kitchen garden the pool yeah the studio with the bathroom and another bedroom

11:01there plenty of room for our dogs to run around your fencing you know the yard area is huge and the

11:08outdoor garden love it it's just a really big space yeah what do you think they would accept it might be

11:18two to maybe 2.2 possibly because it is on over 1200 square meters of land yeah it's a really

11:24big block it is and the owners are open to suggestions hovering around 2.25 oh there you go

11:31perfect okay so you're bang on yeah price i think is reasonable for the size of the house i think it

11:40really is worth that amount of money it's definitely contender from what we've seen so far so it ticks

11:45all of our boxes come on through and have a look at house number three while we're at it i've shown

12:08kate and phil through two of bendigo's finest properties both of which have been dripping with

12:14character and ticking everything off their wish list now i would like to show them this third

12:21option it's quite different and it's a little bit under their budget i'm just really curious to see

12:27what their reaction will be now i know the name of the show is find my country home but how would you

12:33feel about find my country castle we've never shown a house like this before i just thought let's shake

12:39things up a little bit this place is way under your budget okay less than half an hour from town

12:45and it's nearly 30 acres let's just have a little bit of fun how do you feel about living in the

12:51castle i've always fancied myself living in the castle be lord of the castle you could be the queen

12:56something being open-minded this is great looking forward to it yeah let's go you can lead the way

13:02my king feeling a braveheart line coming on they won't take my freedom

13:08wow it's different yes we've got a little ginger cat no doubt called rob roy's i'm not messing with

13:24you i will mention there is a keep out the back that is already being used as an airbnb there are

13:31six bedrooms here wow 22 foot high ceiling ceiling height is amazing kitchens and six bedrooms knowing

13:41it's way under your budget what would you do with the place i think that you'd have to really medieval

13:46it up and have it as an airbnb and have guests staying murder mystery nights things like that yeah

13:53we've driven past it many times and always wondered what it was like inside yeah was not what i was

13:59expecting the high ceilings and the timber and it is very large would you like to go exploring and i'll

14:07meet you outside when you're ready fabulous don't get lost in the castle oh the timber just goes through

14:20as well it's still really light up here and look at the view down to here that's amazing let's have

14:27a look at the bedrooms well this is a nice bedroom oh it's got beautiful views out there yeah see the

14:35vineyard out there the bedrooms up here a good size you know i do love game of thrones so you know this

14:44you're hosting game through night i know this could be up my alley i could be my queen of the dragons outfit

14:52shall we go see katrina and see the other part of the house yeah let's go perfect

15:05hi what were the views like from those two bedrooms upstairs really really good outlook and here is

15:13another floor and sitting areas and something that i didn't mention i said yes it's under budget but also

15:18this is completely off grid really you're paying virtually nothing it's so far under your budget

15:24look something to think about isn't it it is something to take a quirky property but i could see

15:29the potential in it what do you think it's on the market for given the property maybe around about the

15:381.3 to 1.4 miles a little bit less i reckon 1.1 1 million i reckon he's good oh is he yes you know

15:47your castles you know your castles it's around 1.3 1.35 i think it's a fair price for the property

15:56yeah it's just the right buyer would have to come along to fall in love with the property you know

16:01i love my game of thrones so you know this house is really down my alley got a bit to think about now

16:07we've seen this three properties there are a different mix of houses and it's given us a lot to think about

16:25it's finally time to hear if kate and phil have made a decision and i have found the perfect spot

16:42to meet up nearby at macgyver estate i got there super early can you blame me i just want to try a

16:49few samples of this lovely vino and have a little chat to simon about this wonderful wonderful spot

16:56i'm floored how did you find this location around 2019 we were driving up to heathcote wine region

17:02because we explored all the other wine regions around victoria all these rolling hills and giant

17:09ashwin boulders and felt like a bit of home to me because i grew up in marimbula in new south wales

17:14it just felt like somewhere we'd love to move to the view is extraordinary it's the best view in any

17:20winery that i've seen i know the soil here is quite remarkable isn't it it's quite different yeah it's

17:26highly sought after for growing conditions so the actual granite soil offers superior drainage it

17:31actually puts the vines in a state of shock but it produces great results

17:35you're within striking distance to the heart of bendigo yeah absolutely it's a beautiful place to

17:44live it's got everything doesn't it the lifestyle here is is just like a magnet it's multicultural

17:51you've got all of these creative spirits and people are discovering places like this all the

17:55time i mean i didn't even know this existed yeah it's still undiscovered in my opinion i was brought

18:00here for the agriculture i know that the gallery the cultural tourism here is amazing but now you

18:05are getting this world-class reputation for the wine and looking through that picture window i can

18:12see you've got accommodation you're just expanding yeah almost can't wait to open that up absolutely

18:18it'll add another vertical to the business that we definitely need aren't you glad you went on that

18:23little country drive and your life changed like that yeah it definitely changed it's beautiful

19:08that a little bit of that joy is connected to the houses that we showed you what did you what did

19:14you think of those three houses was there one that we could rule out yes yeah oh you answered that

19:20a bit quickly although you know it's a sensational property um probably for us house number three

19:27probably a bit too big of a project and maybe not too much land too far out someone will love that

19:34house but just not for us so how did you feel about house number one that was the one that was in your

19:40street yeah it's beautiful we really loved that house really i loved it too oh my gosh yeah the renovation

19:46was top quality just everything was done to perfection just if it had that one extra bedroom

19:52so it ticked all the boxes just just needed one more bedroom just one more bedroom you're still not

19:56a hundred percent sure with your three children are they coming are they going that's right it's a

20:02little bit in flux isn't it yeah as soon as we saw number two i mean i was in love with that one

20:09as well we could see past the paint great bones really it's got that country farmhouse vibe you know

20:16large kitchen and the bathrooms are all done so we didn't have to worry about those big jobs there

20:21was a pool there was that outdoor studio was just and a veranda

20:28what do you think you'll do i think that we might talk to the real estate agent about it
