00:00From its barren beauty to lush landscapes.
00:07The Australian countryside is as beautiful as it is breathtaking.
00:14Many Australians are discovering rural life and making the move.
00:20So I'm on the hunt to help everyday Australians find their perfect country house.
00:30Welcome to Ballarat, a region absolutely infused with history and heritage.
00:38It made its fortune during the gold rush days.
00:41I will come back to where we are right now.
00:44I do have to go and get changed so we can meet today's buyers.
00:47Today could be interesting. This could be a little bit hard on their heart.
00:50They're leaving somewhere they love so they can be closer to their grandchildren.
00:54Let's see if we can find them a country home to fall in love with.
00:58Let's go meet them.
01:00Hello there. Hello, Regina.
01:08I'm amongst the roses here in Ballarat.
01:11Beautiful.
01:12Thank you for bringing me to Ballarat. I adore this area.
01:16I love the wide streets. I love the heritage homes.
01:19Why are you looking for a home in Ballarat?
01:22Well, we met at a party. Alan offered me the seat that he was sitting on and I politely refused.
01:34And then I had to chase her for another nine months until she finally came around.
01:43We're currently in Inverlee and our family who has provided us with grandchildren, they've moved to Ballarat.
01:51We want to be near them. So we're happy to say goodbye to the beautiful place that we have.
01:57Yeah.
01:58And move on to the next stage of our lives.
02:00Yeah.
02:01Yeah.
02:02Well, I summed that up pretty well.
02:03Absolutely. Fantastic.
02:05Ballarat is just over an hour's drive northwest of Melbourne and was a booming mining town in the 1850s gold rush.
02:14These days, Ballarat is popular for its Victorian architecture, beautiful wide streets while still being close to the state's capital.
02:23Now, let's see if we can find our couple's perfect home in this beautiful part of Victoria.
02:28I know that you're moving from an area that I also adore. Is that right that you're currently in Inverlee?
02:35Inverlee.
02:36That's correct.
02:37We filmed there. I love it. Is it going to break your heart leaving there?
02:40Absolutely, we break our heart. Yeah, we love our place. Yeah.
02:44But you're needed as a grandmother and grandfather.
02:48Well, time is short and we want to be with our family for as long as possible.
02:52Yes.
02:53And when you're a working dad, you miss out a little bit on your children because you're at work all day.
03:00With the grandchildren, you can experience that. So it's fantastic.
03:08You've got a budget of around 900 grand to 1.3, is that right?
03:13Yeah, 1.3, 1.4 is a stretch.
03:17Nice.
03:18Yeah.
03:19And what exactly is a must-have for you?
03:22Minimum of three bedrooms.
03:24Got it.
03:25Two living rooms.
03:26An art studio for you.
03:27Yeah.
03:28So you're an artist?
03:29Yes, I am.
03:30Oh, lovely.
03:31Yes.
03:32And you like a home that is move-in ready and you don't mind a little bit of history,
03:35a little bit of character with the home.
03:36Absolutely.
03:37Yeah.
03:38The high ceilings.
03:39Why is that important to you?
03:40It gives you a sense of space.
03:41Yes.
03:42Having the high ceilings and enjoying the character of the place.
03:47And all of this is working beautifully for our first character-filled home.
03:51We are right in the heart of town here.
03:53You might hear a little bit of traffic noise.
03:55It is move-in ready.
03:57Would you like to check it out?
03:58Absolutely.
03:59Fantastic.
04:00Look at these roses.
04:01I've got rose envy.
04:02Come on through.
04:03Beautiful.
04:17Down a step into the heart of the home.
04:22So when we first came in and saw that living space there with the kitchen, that's ideal.
04:27Yeah, it's got the modern and it's got the historical.
04:30It takes so many boxes.
04:31It's lovely, isn't it?
04:32This all opens up, of course, out to the back.
04:36I can't wait to get out there.
04:38It's beautiful.
04:39I will let you have a look in just a moment, but why don't you just check out the bedrooms.
04:44When you're ready, I'll meet you out underneath the vines.
04:47Okay.
04:48All right, check it out.
04:49See you soon.
04:57That's a nice big room and ceilings.
05:00Ceiling, oh, it's beautiful.
05:02Yeah.
05:03Oh, an ensuite.
05:04Fantastic.
05:05Cute little ensuite.
05:06Yeah.
05:07You can view the garden.
05:08Yeah.
05:09From those windows there.
05:10Very well thought out.
05:11They look well appointed.
05:12Yeah.
05:13Everything in there.
05:15Let's go and find Katrina and see what the property values.
05:20Come and join me amongst the vines.
05:36I'm here with the Boston Ivies.
05:38We've got a grapevine going over the back.
05:41And this conceals a four bay garage.
05:45You could have a studio in there if you wanted to.
05:47And we've just got the birds out here.
05:49It's just beautiful.
05:50It was interesting because at the front, I was a little bit worried about the hospital
05:55traffic, so to speak.
05:56Yeah.
05:57But now that you come out to the back, it's just lorikeet central.
06:00Yes.
06:01You can't hear any traffic.
06:02You're right.
06:03I know.
06:04I was worried at the front.
06:05I'm calmed at the back.
06:07It's only just hit the market.
06:09Yeah.
06:10So what do you think it's for sale for?
06:13Probably around the 1.25 to 1.3.
06:18Boom.
06:19You bang on.
06:23Well, the price is in our budget.
06:25Yeah.
06:26So that's worth considering.
06:27Yeah.
06:28Give it a lot of thought.
06:29Perhaps give it a lot of thought.
06:30Yeah.
06:31Would you like to follow down this back way and I'll take you to house number two?
06:36Sure.
06:37Oh, I love it.
06:38Come on through.
06:39Come on through.
06:40To house number two.
06:41This home is over 100 years old.
06:42I think the way it's been renovated is really schmick.
06:43I really like the way they've done it.
06:44We've got this beautiful light coming on through.
06:45We've got this beautiful light coming on through.
06:46This home is over 100 years old.
06:47I think the way it's been renovated is really schmick.
06:49I really like the way they've done it.
06:50We've got this beautiful light coming on through.
06:52What do you think of this area this street?
06:53Is it kind of in the vicinity of where you'd like to be?
06:54Yes.
06:55It's a pretty good street.
06:56Yeah.
06:57It's lovely home.
06:58And to be in there once a
07:02year, it looks a bit in the الخ right now, oh my god.
07:05It looked like my 3rd house is, it says, it's…"
07:14Sh gördey knife is seriously tidak arisen.
07:18This is its a great状 Seriously.
07:20street yeah it's lovely homes I will say this property is probably the smallest of
07:25the three that I'll show you so I'm not quite sure how you feel about that I
07:29know that you're leaving a few acres from Inverlee and I know that you love
07:33your garden there is a little bit of a garden easy out the front equally out
07:38the back may I show you inside the house absolutely yes please look at these massive
07:56floor-to-ceiling windows going right across the back it's a bit of a gamble to have the dark
08:02floors a lot of people love trading off the original timber floors what do you think is
08:07it your kind of style not really but they've done it well how would you describe your style
08:12probably more period okay more period style but I do love the very large glass doors and windows
08:19it brings the outside straight in yeah absolutely and it's so compact and warm we've got fireplaces
08:27throughout the house I think that's a big plus is the two separate living spaces we really want that
08:33don't we and it's a good size room the front room it is the wish list how does the size of this house
08:39work for you the dining area is an issue for us it's too small for our family so we'd have to think
08:47about extending yeah perhaps check out the ensuite that's off the main bedroom and I'll meet you
08:54outside by the veggie patch in the garden okay it's small but it's cute it's doable okay let's go I'll see you soon
09:00it's a fairly good size room yeah it's nice bright big windows looking out to the front garden and it's
09:14quiet strength you haven't got the noise I'd say the walking road was tight yeah there's
09:33there wasn't it wasn't much room in there that looked a bit limiting
09:37come and join me out the back
10:03walking down the hallway like it's your own runway I have to say Alan you are the most stylish
10:10man I think that has ever been on find my country home where did you find this jacket by the way I love it
10:16Tasmania Tasmania one of our trips really there you go
10:19there's a fire pit it's a beautiful little sun cat and it's private again too you don't feel like you're on top of your neighbours
10:29it's got everything on the wish list but it is a little on the small side what do you think it's
10:36on the market for one point one million fifty thousand okay it's one point one to one point two but I will look into a discount if you give me your jacket
10:43we're going to show you one more house and I think you will love it as well a little bit bigger let's go check it out back through that big white hallway you can lead the way
10:50we're going to show you one more house and I think you will love it as well a little bit bigger let's go check it out back through that big white hallway you can lead the way
11:05well let me tell you about house number three this one is a double brick federation home over a hundred years old little bit of an extension out the back
11:34glorious sunshine coming in all around us what do you think of this space this is really nice
11:42quiet you've got privacy all around you
11:46there is a cat hello I will find out the name by the time I show you the rest of this house but he could be making an appearance
11:57so let me take you inside and I want you to keep your mind open as to where artist spaces could be because we've got loads of bedrooms come on through
12:06come to the heart of the home wow you can see from the walls there and the little stained glass window this is a mini extension
12:35I really like that back area of the kitchen that whole aspect of the backyard
12:42yeah but it had a lovely feel with all those windows yeah you felt as though you had plenty of room to move
12:48it felt warm yeah being in there yeah you could open this up more as French doors if you wanted to just walk straight out
12:57just this is a really lovely feeling here I'd be saying can I keep that and can I keep that it's just really quirky
13:04yeah very quirky yeah not something that I would normally say is me as my style but I like it there's something about I really like
13:12I think it has a really lovely feel to it now to have a first little wonder I would actually like you to have a look up stairs
13:21it's currently used as a playroom for the children who live here but you may want to use it as an artist studio or keep it as a playroom
13:31how about you take a look and when you're ready I will meet you along the side apparently it's a nice little rose garden down by the side so
13:38okay so take a little look and I'll see you soon
13:40lovely space isn't it yeah this could be for the girls or girls that love it yeah well I could have my studio here with lots of light coming
13:56that's what you need through here it's really different yeah it's not what I expected no it's from the front
14:03you've got another room over there over on the other side there's a bedroom too so that's more space as well
14:08it's got a lot of positives about it
14:31come and join me in the garden
14:33what do you think of this space out here
14:39a lot of scope with the garden was there
14:41yeah a lot of potential to do a lot of things
14:43yeah little nooks that you could have sitting areas or areas for a veggie patch
14:48this is yet to hit the market so you know that they're still sort of pottering a little bit
14:56yeah but also the price I think is pretty darn good considering they haven't tested interest
15:02so what do you think they are considering
15:06probably 900 to 960 70
15:11it's just over it's 1.1
15:131.1
15:141.1
15:15it's 1.1
15:16as I mentioned it hasn't hit the market so everything is up for negotiation
15:22it's within our budget
15:23yes it is
15:24okay so we've got some money that we could make some changes
15:28opening up those glass windows into doors
15:31French doors maybe
15:32why don't you have a think about the three homes that we've seen
15:35and then let's catch up when you're ready and you can let me know what you'd like to do
15:55while Lauren, Dana and Alan think through their options
15:59I took a moment to have a chat with Alyssa from Ivory Pavilion
16:02to learn about what life is like as a Ballarat small business owner
16:07I do have to say Alyssa I wore an ivory dress for you
16:11yes I know you're in theme
16:13well I tried I really did try but I didn't know how bang on I was going to be
16:17until I actually arrived and obviously ivory and black is the go
16:21yes
16:22how did you come up with the name and the concept
16:24well ivory was obvious because we've got such a white space
16:27but the word building wasn't going to cut it for a wedding venue or an event space
16:31so I started Googling and I was like what other word explains building
16:35and then I found pavilion
16:36and I was like that sounds really luxe and really beautiful
16:39so I went with that
16:40and it is a beautiful pavilion
16:42did it always look like this?
16:43no it actually didn't
16:45when we first walked in it was a very different space
16:47so we actually had purple carpet
16:49lovely
16:50terracotta walls
16:51beautiful
16:52we had pink beams
16:54but I could see the potential
16:56I had a real eye for what I wanted our venue to be
16:58but I could never imagine it would be on a golf course
17:00and that we would have all this lush greenery around us
17:03I know that Ballarat has such a successful history
17:12I love that they embrace their heritage
17:16but it's very forward thinking as well
17:18and there's a lot of people moving here now
17:20why is that?
17:21yeah I mean I think it's just up and coming
17:24it's growing all the time
17:25people just want to be here
17:27they want that sort of serene country life
17:29but they've also got a bit of bustle and a bit of vibe as well
17:32so you get the best of both worlds
17:34how is that
17:35and the best of others
17:36yeah
17:37hello Iggy
17:38how are they?
17:40thanks for turning on the weather
17:41this is a real life change for you isn't it?
17:46yes it is
17:47it is
17:49and
17:50And our family that has given us the grandchildren.
17:54And we don't want to miss that.
17:57You know, I grew up with my grandmother.
18:00My grandmother was my best friend.
18:02And my parents kept having children.
18:06And they moved in with my grandmother.
18:10We had the most beautiful relationship.
18:13Exactly what you said.
18:14It wasn't the big events.
18:17It wasn't the family barbecues.
18:18It was the tiny, quiet moments that you really do treasure.
18:23So I'm in awe that you're making that big decision.
18:26And I'm really tender to the fact that it's a big deal for you.
18:30It is.
18:31This was going to be a challenge.
18:32And we just wanted to have a sticky beak.
18:34Probably my favourite is number one.
18:37Really?
18:38The first one.
18:39Yes.
18:40Yeah, there were lots of positives about that.
18:42It was beautifully kept, beautifully renovated, landscaped beautifully.
18:46You'd never have known that from the front.
18:48No, it's such a bustle out the front.
18:50That's right.
18:51That's right.
18:51That busy street near the hospital.
18:53But, you know, the parking situation is a concern.
18:58That was the one handbrake.
18:59It was the one thing.
19:00And I know that the second one, you thought maybe that was a little bit too small.
19:07Yes.
19:07Yes.
19:08So there would have to be a fair bit of work with renovating if we were to add a room to
19:13the back.
19:14The walk-in row was very small.
19:15I could fit my shoes in there.
19:17That's not going to fly.
19:19No.
19:19What about house number three?
19:22That was the Red Brick Federation.
19:24Really interesting.
19:25Really interesting little place.
19:28And had a lot of options.
19:31To take all the furniture out, then you could have a really good look at it and then work
19:35from there, I think.
19:36It definitely had a style to it.
19:38Once their furniture is gone, then you could really style it up and see, can my personality
19:42adapt to this?
19:43It had a few options.
19:45There's a bit of land there.
19:48What do you think you'll do?
19:50Well, we sort of thought, well, we might venture back to number three to have another look.
19:56Okay, great.
19:57Go from there.
19:58Absolutely.
19:59Yeah.
19:59That's all you can do.
20:00And I just wish you all the very best for your future.
20:02And I really think you're doing the right thing.
20:04Make the most of every moment and opportunity.
20:07Appreciate it.
20:07Thank you for spending the day with us.
20:10Good luck.
20:10Let us know what happens, okay?
20:12Thank you very much.
20:13After checking in with our couple, the latest news is that they're actually still on the
20:19hunt for their perfect Ballarat home.
20:21We wish you all the very best of luck as you continue your journey in Ballarat.
