00:14Many Australians are discovering rural life and making the move.

00:20So I'm on the hunt to help everyday Australians find their perfect country house.

00:30Welcome to beautiful Bendigo, a town that I would say today is known as a creative force.

00:39And our buyers Brad and Stacey would like to call Bendigo home.

00:43They have three children, Stacey has a thriving Pilates business, Brad is a carpenter.

00:48So they're looking for a few bedrooms and with a budget of around $1.4 million,

00:52they really want to see what is out there, what is happening with the Bendigo real estate market.

00:57Let's go meet our buyers.

01:00Hello, Stacey and Brad.

01:07Nice to meet you.

01:08The carpenter.

01:09And you own a Pilates studio.

01:13Yes, I do.

01:14And so that studio, is that in town?

01:17Yeah, so it's actually only about four minutes from here.

01:20Fantastic.

01:21Did you grow up here?

01:22Are you locals?

01:23Why Bendigo?

01:24Brad's lived here his whole life.

01:25I moved here for university when I was 18.

01:28It's got everything you need, but you don't get like the traffic, that hustle and bustle vibe.

01:33It's still nice country town.

01:35You can get from like one side to the other within 15 minutes.

01:38I agree with everything that you just said.

01:40I just love Bendigo so much.

01:42What is on the wish list?

01:44What is your dream home?

01:46So we've got twins, boy-girl twins, who are six years old.

01:53Yeah.

01:54And we have a three and a half year old, three-nager.

01:56He's a lot.

01:57He's wild.

01:58Yeah.

01:59We are definitely outgrowing our house as the kids grow bigger and bigger.

02:04We definitely want a space where the kids get their own bedroom when they grow up.

02:08So at least four bedrooms.

02:10And then we're also looking for somewhere that we could potentially have my parents,

02:13they come and stay quite often.

02:15Having a space for them to stay would be great.

02:17Extra bathroom as well.

02:18Yeah.

02:19Our daughter really wants a puppy dog.

02:21We just don't have the space at the moment.

02:24No puppy dog until we've got a bit more of a yard.

02:27I'm a carpenter, a separate shed for tools and stuff for the business.

02:34I look at things that are a little bit more than 1.4, but Brad definitely.

02:48Only a couple of hours in the car north of Melbourne, the historic city of Bendigo

02:54sits right in Victoria's Goldfields region, offering a wonderful mix of both heritage and modern living.

03:01It boasts a strong community feel, vibrant art scene and access to both nature and all the essential amenities.

03:10With a slower pace of life and unique country charm, I am perhaps just a little bit envious of Stacy and Brad, who get to call Bendigo home.

03:27It is 1880s.

03:29It's got a Victorian double front on a really big block of land.

03:33What's unusual about this block of land, it's got a big long driveway and there might just be a shed out the back, which is kind of unusual for something here in the heart of town.

03:44It was amazingly green.

03:46It's got that old Victorian feel to it, but also with a little hint of modern in it, so it's beautiful.

08:14This house here, it dates back to 1850.

08:17We start with the original double brick home, right here on the corner, and then they have

08:22the extension at the back.

08:31It is definitely on a bit of a busy intersection.

08:34Which isn't that great for when we've got the three young kids.

11:09And then, of course, we've got the garden all along the side.

11:12With three young kids, space would probably be an issue here.

12:09Now I've just shown Stacey and Brad through two quite different houses around

12:25Vendigo and what I'm sensing is that they need a little more space for their

12:29three children so this last option certainly ticks the box in that category

12:36okay you want space you got space this home is set on three titles it goes way

12:44down the back but boy there is some history Millen stables dates back to 1872

12:49and what you've got here are two houses that have been joined so we've got the

12:54cottage here on the left and then a glass room joins it to the stables so this

13:00house is really full of character I like the area land size amazing yeah it looks

13:06interesting let's take a look inside the cottage first come on through

13:21I think this is the first time I've ever shown a home with an artist studio it's

13:27got its own self-contained kitchen you've got bedrooms through this part of the

13:31house as well and then you come out to this new extension which is the artists

13:36studio you could create main bedroom primary you could have this for your

13:40parents if you wanted I think it would work really well as like a rompus room

13:44for the kids because it's got access to outside as well so they can go outside

13:48definitely walking in little kitchenette and bedroom which would be great for

13:53grandparents and such absolutely yeah quite large lots of space which is a big

13:59tick let me take you into the stables let me know what you think nice big

14:10you've got light absolutely everywhere you've basically got a big glass living

14:17room here it's a little bit of a maze but yeah I can understand now this is huge I

14:22didn't expect this it's a great family home it was really interesting to see how

14:27they join the cottage section and the stables together with that lounge and

14:31kitchen quite a large area I think the kitchen layout is really good for the

14:35kids because you can see out into the yard and also the lounge rooms all tied

14:39together have a little wander and meet me back out in the garden when you're

14:45ready

14:56okay well this is so this is really cool I like this interesting house isn't it

15:03isn't it and it's quite large it is great space I think it goes around the

15:08back there

15:11just keeps going I know this is amazing I didn't really expect it to be so large

15:17up there I suppose but it's definitely the biggest bedroom we've seen today lots

15:21of storage lots of cupboard space I think it definitely does need a little bit of an

15:25update maybe a paint as well would you like to go find Katrina then let's do it

15:38do you kind of love the energy at this place as well I think just it's so quiet

15:44and this garden is beautiful yeah it's definitely a lot quieter than the other

15:48places are yeah but still it's still very very close to town yeah it's very big

15:54though yeah the possibility we could put a pool in yeah it's great it's got good

15:58bones and it's solid has character so what do you think this one is currently on

16:04the market for it's probably in the higher range I'm gonna say one point yeah

16:09three yeah it's on the market for one point three yeah I think it's pretty fair

16:15considering its location and size the land is quite large for where it is

16:21does need a little bit of work to bring it up to what we would like to see it

16:25does let's catch up for a cheeky vino and let me know what you're thinking

16:30perfect thank you it was interesting all three houses yeah they've all got their

16:37own sort of unique qualities should we go and have a think about it and maybe do

16:41some pros and cons yeah let's write a list

16:45I'm giving Stacy and Brad some thinking time to discuss the options that we saw in Bendigo now in

16:59the meantime I have decided to take in the historic charm of the town by stopping at

17:04Langley Estate and I was lucky enough to have a chat with Thomas to hear all about it you actually get to

17:12call Langley Estate your home yes we can't believe it absolutely we were

17:16looking for 15 years for something like this you looked all around Australia it's

17:20just magnificent what is the story to it so it was built in 1903 for the first

17:27Anglican Bishop of Bendigo the next Bishop didn't want to live here it was too

17:30ostentatious this beautiful chapel was actually built in 1873 as all Saints

17:35Anglican Church in Lauriston the very same Bishop that didn't want to live here

17:39because it was too ostentatious they were setting it up as a toddler's home and

17:42he needed a kindergarten space so he thought hey presto I know what I can do

17:46we can cut it in half and move it here and make it a kindergarten for the

17:49toddlers home so 50 years this was a kindergarten but it's an absolute piece

17:53of colonial Victorian history it's 1873 you bought Langley as a concert space as

18:00an event space do you also have accommodation here we do we have boutique

18:04accommodation so we use six of the 15 bedrooms for boutique guest accommodation as

18:08well yeah I think the Bendigo is a cultural force that is it's true it's

18:15true I do because we've been so fortunate the built heritage we've

18:18inherited because the main architect of Bendigo in the 19th century his big thing

18:22was to create Bendigo as the Vienna of the South so all the beautiful buildings a

18:26town hall the cathedrals it's a magnificent space the streetscapes are so

18:30pretty it's just lovely and an hour and a half from Melbourne I mean what could be

18:33better do you do weddings in here as well we do and your concert absolutely

18:39which we're about to experience

18:42I am meeting up again with Stacy and Brad to hear if they've come to a decision and what

19:08better place than the gardens at Langley Estate isn't this place gorgeous it is

19:16stunning so let's have a little chat about the three very different houses that

19:21were all around your budget so what did you think of that beautiful first home

19:27that was kind of surprising you had that gorgeous little garden that would be

19:31perfect for Easter egg hunts leading into the extension at the back what did you

19:35think of that one I did like that one we really loved it but I just don't think

19:39there's enough space we're really looking for somewhere that has that extra room

19:43like a rumpus room for the kids to be fair it did have that sort of second

19:48living area but you really want a space that if there's mess it's okay yes yes

19:55and absolutely okay what about house number two that was really nice really

20:00nicely done although probably not suitable for that was the one that you

20:05want for your parents yeah exactly okay gorgeous house but yeah just a little bit

20:11too small

20:14that leads us to the final house the the character infused house yes with the

20:20cottage that connected with the glass room super clunky we didn't have the flow

20:25is like the first place it would need we would think a good renovation to bring it

20:30up to what we would want right amount of bedrooms the backyard was amazing the

20:36master bedroom was great yeah it had that space yes you were saying it does need we

20:41need to inject time money into it to bring it now that we've seen all those

20:48three houses what do you think you'll do I think we're gonna keep looking yeah yeah

20:54I think so we would really like to find the most ideal property that we could move into and be

21:02there for many many years this has been great food for thought for what does and doesn't work for

21:09you absolutely well lovely to meet you and good luck for finding your new country home thank you

21:25since my time in bendigo stacy and brad have reached out to let me know that their house hunt may just

21:32have come to an end and they have only recently put in an offer on a beautiful property now i do have
