00:00Several nations demanded on Tuesday the lifting of the U.S. blockade on Cuba before the United Nations General Assembly.
00:20The impact of Category 4 hurricane Melissa on the southern coast of the eastern region of Cuba is imminent.
00:33A Monday, during the ordinarization of the National Assembly of Venezuela, the Prime Minister of Trinidad, Antobago, was declared persona non grata.
00:48Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Sofia Fernandes from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
00:54On Tuesday morning, the 21st plenary meeting of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly
01:00considered the resolution necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba.
01:08Several representatives of the international community reiterated their rejection of the blockade,
01:13which has been characterized as a violation of international law and the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
01:20Since 1992, the UN has consecutively approved resolutions calling for an end to the blockade.
01:27This is the 34th time Cuba has presented such a resolution to the international organization.
01:33However, the United States rejected these claims, intensifying the economic oppression on the island.
01:39The resolution will be put up to vote by UN member states on October 29th.
01:46In this context, in use of the right point of order, the Cuban Foreign Minister interrupted the US representative
01:56to provide a strong response to his address.
02:00The eight of the rules.
02:03The permanent representative of the United States is not only lying, substantively deviating from the subject,
02:12but is also grossly and expressing against his president, against the dignity of the assembly and the member states.
02:23He is doing so in an uncivilized, crude and gross way.
02:29That is not acceptable in this democratic forum.
02:34Mr. Walts, this is the United Nations General Assembly.
02:40It is not a signal chat, nor is it the House of Representatives.
02:46In addition, the Cuban Foreign Minister referred to the treaty posed by the United States military deployment in the Caribbean.
03:01I spoke on our strong rejection on the threat that the US government is creating against peace, security,
03:15and stability in the region and also in the world.
03:22It is a military deployment that we know that it doesn't work to face scourges like drug trafficking,
03:33but it constitutes an existential threat against the independence of Venezuela and all other nations of our region against sovereignty of all states.
03:48Also, the permanent representative of Colombia for the United Nations, Leonor Zalavata, denounces the inclusion of Cuba as a country sponsor of terrorism.
03:58The unjust and unilateral inclusion of Cuba on the list of state sponsors of terrorism constitutes an unjustified measure that is aggravating the effects of the embargo and which ignores its historic contribution to peace.
04:19And Colombia can attest to that.
04:24Cuba has been a fundamental actor in the pursuit of peace in our country,
04:28playing a central role in the achievement of the final peace agreement in 2016 between the government and the FARC-EP,
04:38and also supporting its implementation, particularly the processes relating to the ceasefire, disarmament, demobilization, and the reintegration of ex-combatants.
04:51Cuba describes a disrespectful speech by the United States representative to the United Nations General Assembly on the need to end the financial blockade imposed by Washington against the island.
05:03The deputy minister of foreign affairs on Cuba, Ana Yancy Rodriguez, described as disrespectful and uncivilized the speech in Washington that dismisses the Cuban struggle,
05:14and falsely accuses the Cuban government of threatening its national security and supporting terrorism, as well as violating the freedoms of its citizens.
05:22The deputy foreign minister emphasized that despite the intimidating attitudes of the United States, the world will once again show overwhelming support for Cuba,
05:31as well as for the lifting of the blockade, and for justice, truth, and international law to be respected for the Cuban people.
05:45And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember joining us on TikTok at Telesur English,
05:49where you will find news in different formats, news updates, and more.
05:53We'll be right back. Stay with us.
06:07Welcome back to From the South.
06:09The impact of Category 3 hurricane Melissa to the southern coast of the eastern region of Cuba is imminent,
06:15and will enter the international territory through the municipality of Guamá, in the province of Santiago de Cuba.
06:21The Meteorological Institute of Cuba, and its latest updates on 12 a.m. local time, reported that a hurricane is approaching the country with maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour.
06:33Its current position places Melissa about 85 kilometers south of Guamá, and 130 kilometers southwest of the city of Santiago de Cuba.
06:41So far, the other events of this hurricane are affecting the eastern region of Cuba,
06:47with heavy rains that have recorded 61 millimeters accumulated in Olguín, and 52 millimeters in Las Tunas.
06:54Hurricane force winds will begin to be falled in the southern part of the eastern region from early morning,
07:00which will bring waves between 4 and 8 meters.
07:03Melissa will continue moving northeast at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour, and is expected to make a longfall in Cuba any moment now.
07:11Over 735,000 people have been evacuated so far.
07:17For his part, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel addressed the people of the eastern region ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Melissa,
07:31and called to act responsibly during and after the passage of the storm.
07:36At the same time, the Cuban leader affirmed that multiple brigades are already on site to start the recovery operations,
07:42as soon as the weather conditions allow them.
07:46We have worked intensively, responsibly, with great dedication and effort,
07:53in a timely and consistent manner.
07:58This has enabled us to evacuate a large number of people to safe places,
08:04and to take measures to protect the main resources of the economy,
08:09and the belongings of people living in areas that are particularly vulnerable to flooding,
08:16landslides, or other types of danger.
08:20Now the most important thing is for all of us to act responsibly,
08:26for the population to strictly comply with the measures and guidelines issued by the defense authorities,
08:33at the regional, municipal, provincial, and national level.
08:39It should be noted that multiple teams are already in the eastern region of the country,
08:46in the provinces that will be most affected by this hurricane,
08:50to work in the recovery of the damages caused by the hurricane.
08:55In other words, there are already electricity brigades, water resource brigades, communications brigades,
09:04and construction brigades, that will work together with the forces of each territory to repair the damages.
09:11In addition, United Nations agencies have made resources available to the country in advance,
09:20and a group of resources is already in place to provide assistance and care to those affected by this weather event.
09:30Also in Cuba, Army General Raul Castro Cruz participated in the videoconference led by President of the Republic,
09:37Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, with the National Defense Council and the provinces that will face the impacts of Hurricane Melissa.
09:44Through the Brigadier General José Amalos Ricardo Guerra, he conveyed that he was keeping up to date with the evolution of the phenomenon and the measures adopted,
09:54and will continue to monitor the situation.
09:57In the message, Raul expressed satisfaction with the responsibility with which the work has been carried out,
10:03and the level of preparation achieved, while reminding those involved of the need to maintain maximum discipline during the event and in the following phases.
10:11In other news, we move to Turkey, where at least 26 people were injured when they reacted in panic to the collapse of several buildings,
10:27following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake west of Turkey.
10:31According to the authorities' report, citizens were injured after jumping off windows or running away in a hurry in the province of Balikasir.
10:40In this regard, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerel Likaya assured that there were no fatalities after the earthquake that occurred on Monday night.
10:48In this context, and on the instructions of the government, teams from the Provincial Dictatorate of the Environment,
10:55Urbanization and Climate Change remain deployed to assess the damage caused while removing debris in the affected areas.
11:10In the United States, the Senate approved a measure ending the National Emergency Declaration
11:15to impose tariffs on Brazilian products.
11:18Legislators approved the measure, with 52 votes in favor and 48 against,
11:22after some of the legislators emphasized that such trade measures affect U.S. consumers.
11:28The National Emergency was declared by U.S. President Donald Trump in July,
11:32in retaliation for the indictment of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro,
11:37accused of attempting a coup d'etat.
11:39The State's actions take place while the U.S. President is on a five-day tour of Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and China.
11:48The House is suspected to approve other legislative measures to end Trump's tariffs against Canada and other countries around the world this week.
11:56Meanwhile in Belarus, during the third Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security,
12:08the President Alexander Lukashenko outlined the country's key proposals for the peace agenda.
12:14The state presented four proposals summarizing Belarus' commitment to promoting peace.
12:19Lukashenko's proposal focused on prohibiting sanctions on food and medicine, protecting critical international infrastructure,
12:27offering solutions to the migration crisis and taking measures in the field of artificial intelligence.
12:34In addition, the Belarus leader emphasized that 80 years after the formation of the United Nations,
12:39it is crucial for international organizations to fulfill their missions of providing solutions to global issues.
12:46We move now to Brazil, where at least 80 people died on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro's most deadly police operation ever,
13:04which targeted a major gun days before the city hosts global events related to the United Nations climate summit known as COP30.
13:12Throughout the day, ambulances transported injured civilians and officials to the Guetulio Vargas State Hospital in Rio de Janeiro.
13:21Among them was agent Marcos Vinicus de Carvalho, who died upon the arrival at the hospital due to conscient witness.
13:28According to half-thirties, the hospital was overwhelmed after the arrival of those injured, whose number exceeded 80.
13:35The so-called contention operation mobilized about 2,500 security forces in the favelas of Alimao and Pena.

14:05Welcome back!
14:18The National Assembly of Venezuela unanimously declared the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago,
14:23Camila Persia v. Cesar, a persona non grata, for her complicity with the United States in its aggression against Venezuela.
14:31The decision, backed by all political sectors in Parliament, was a resounding response to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago's decision
14:38to open its doors to U.S. military forces responsible for criminal acts in the Caribbean.
14:44The President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, emphasized the decision and supported all the measures agreed by the National Executive
14:51to denounce and suspend all energy agreements signed with Trinidad and Tobago
14:56in response to the country's submissive behavior towards a foreign power.
15:08Trinidad and Tobago praises the United States' attack and calls for the elimination of all drug traffickers
15:15because the rule of law no longer exists, because international relations cease to exist, because international law is being brushed aside.
15:28And this lady should read a little about the history of Trinidad and Tobago, so she knows how empires treat their colonies,
15:40so they know how Trinidad and Tobago was exchanged for Menorca in the Treaty of Amiens, because it belonged to the Captaincy General of Venezuela,
15:51and how, after some skirmishes and battles between England and Spain, the two kings shaked hands yes,
15:58and how they exchanged them like trump cards, give me Trinidad and Tobago, and I'll give you Menorca back.
16:05That is the fate of the colonies.
16:10When they no longer serve the purposes of Marco Rubio, they will be discarded like rubbish.
16:17They will be exchanged for currency as they did in 1798 with Trinidad and Tobago.
16:26You should learn from your own history
16:29that this is the devil's embrace,
16:33that this will only lead to suffering
16:38and more acute poverty for the people of Trinidad.
16:44The president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge Rorias, also assured that for years Venezuela was generous with Trinidad and Tobago, in terms of hydrocarbons.
16:57We don't need gas from Venezuela.
17:05When the mouse arrives, we'll see if you don't need gas from Venezuela.
17:10We'll see if it wasn't as generous as that energy agreement signed between one of the largest gas reserves on the entire planet, located in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
17:37And a country that has completely depleted its gas reserves.
17:45In this sense, protest continues in several states of Venezuela, in defense of national sovereignty,
17:51and in rejection of the imperialist war threats of the United States in the Caribbean.
17:56Venezuelan protesters described the actions of Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamala Persat-Veizar as provocative,
18:03who expressed her support for Washington's military deployment in waters near the coast of Venezuela,
18:09under the pretext of combating drug trafficking.
18:12People also denounce the intentions of the CIA,
18:15which intends to carry out a false flag operation in Trinidad and Tobago,
18:19with the aim of justifying an intervention in Venezuela.
18:22In this regard, the participants expressed their support for the Bolivarian government
18:26and the policies of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
18:29In the four islands of the state of Aragua, the banana or cambur, as it is called in Venezuela,
18:34is not only a fundamental pillar of the local cuisine, but also a source of employment that boosts the lives of the country.
18:39In the four islands of the state of Aragua, the banana or cambur, as it is called in Venezuela,
18:41is not only a fundamental pillar of the local cuisine, but also a source of employment that boosts the lives of the country.
18:43in the four islands of the state of Aragua, the banana or cambur, as it is called in Venezuela,
18:58is not only a fundamental pillar of the local cuisine, but also a source of employment that boosts the local and national economy.
19:05Our colleague, Albert Fragua, who continues to explore this great country, brings us the following report.
19:12In conditions of sunlight and humidity, plantains and bananas have become the heart of the economy in Santa Cruz de Aragua.
19:20Behind every fruit lies an organized community that lives from the land, and in it has found a future.
19:27All the staff are around here on the farm.
19:33They're all locals, from different towns, some from llamas, and even some from Sucre.
19:42Right now, we have about 70 direct workers, and with indirect ones, we reach around 120.
19:49Each bunch requires precise care, the cut becomes art.
19:53Farmers learn from a young age how to cut, clean, and select the fruit, respecting the cycles of nature.
19:59It's hard work, but full of pride.
20:01To cut the bunch that's ready for harvest.
20:06Look, these leaves will be trimmed to make it easier to cut the bunch.
20:11The rope here, a small knot.
20:17All the leaves.
20:22Then he comes, come and lift it.
20:25It's cut high so that this stem will feed the sprout.
20:30That's coming up that one will be ready for the second harvest.
20:35On the farms, women are also key.
20:37Their work and joy make the harvest a collective task, where production blends with daily life and family ties.
20:44Yes, yes.
20:45Well, they're almost like my family because I work with my mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
20:50And yes, we have fun here, we tell jokes, gossip, everything.
20:53We talk about a bit of everything.
20:56Once cut, the plantain is washed and prepared for distribution throughout the country, but also to Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire.
21:03With a stable weekly production workers are already thinking about the next step, global export.
21:09We're ready because we follow a cycle, a weekly harvest cycle.
21:19We already have a production plan for three to four years.
21:23And if we keep it up, with God's help, we'll last much longer.
21:29With the management we've achieved and the quality of fruit we are harvesting for the national market,
21:36we are now ready to export this fruit worldwide
21:40and open new horizons with the good work and careful handling we've achieved.
21:46A challenge filled with perseverance and ambition that we at Telezor will continue to follow closely.
21:53And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
