WHO leads first medical evacuations from Gaza Strip since ceasefire

The World Health Organization (WHO) led the medical evacuation of 41 critical patients and 145 companions out of Gaza - a first since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas on 10 October.

00:01For the first time since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect on 10th of October,
00:07the World Health Organization has been able to evacuate patients from Gaza.
00:11Many civilians in the territory suffer from heavy injuries related to the war.
00:16Others cannot get the treatment they need for conditions such as heart disease or cancer.
00:21This is the first medical evacuation happening since the implementation of the ceasefire
00:28on the last 10th of October.
00:32As part of the WHO operational plan for Gaza during the 60 days following the ceasefire,
00:39we are committed to scale up our capacity to assist and support and coordinate medical evacuations,
00:47including the setup of the medical hub in close collaboration with the Palestinian Red Crescent.
00:5241 critical patients have been evacuated so far,
00:58but around 15,000 people in Gaza are currently waiting for approval to receive medical care outside the territory.
01:05Hundreds have died waiting for evacuations when they were not allowed,
01:09medical groups and Palestinians in the Hamas-ruled enclave say.
01:12The WHO, which took over management of the process last year,
01:17said 740 people, including 137 children on the list, have died since July of last year.
