00:00The world is focusing in on Gyeongju, South Korea this week, where the Asia-Pacific Economic
00:05Cooperation Forum is underway. Leaders from all over the world will gather here for meetings that
00:10could have a major impact on global trade and diplomacy. Highly anticipated is an expected
00:16meeting between the leaders of the world's two largest economies, U.S. President Donald Trump
00:21and Chinese President Xi Jinping, their first face-to-face meeting since Trump began his second
00:27term. It comes during a fragile time in U.S.-China relations. Just weeks ago, the U.S. threatened
00:34to slap 100 percent tariffs on China after China tightened export controls on rare-earth minerals,
00:40escalating an ongoing trade war. But the U.S.'s top negotiator says the two sides hammered out a
00:46preliminary framework for a trade deal in Malaysia over the weekend. And on Monday, U.S. Secretary of
00:52State Marco Rubio had a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, setting the stage for
00:57their leaders to meet later this week. I have a lot of respect for President Xi, and we are going to,
01:04I think we're going to come away with a deal. Trump has also suggested the two sides could talk about
01:09Taiwan, something Taiwan's foreign ministry says it's watching out for. There are also other big
01:15meetings going on. Both Xi and Trump are set to meet South Korean President Lee Jae-myung,
01:21with Washington and Seoul expected to continue working out a tariff deal, as negotiations have
01:26stalled. Meanwhile, Taiwan's representative to APEC, Lin Xie, says he hopes to engage with other
01:32leaders at the forum, likely meeting some sideline meetings of his own, in line with goals set out by
01:38Taiwan President Lai Qingde to increase international economic cooperation. Taiwan's foreign minister has
01:45also suggested there could be discussions with U.S. officials on tariffs. Lin, who is a senior
01:50advisor to Lai and chairman of a government-based venture capital firm, left Taiwan on Tuesday morning
01:56for South Korea.
01:57I will also be able to come to the opportunity to submit to the President's leadership team,
02:13to express this ĐēŅ€Đ°ier's interests and to express the role of the President's adjustment.
02:18Taiwan,分äēĢ, and show us the features of all the areas of our industry, especially
02:26the windmill, AI, our tech tech, and small companies.
02:33Global business leaders are also here in Gyeongju, including NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang,
02:38who might deliver a speech this week on technologies such as AI and robotics.
02:43With so many world leaders and drivers of the global economy gathering here in this small
02:48city, security has been ramped up.
02:51Preparations are being made in front of both Xi and Trump's hotels, with entrance marquees
02:56set up and strict security protocols near APEC venues.
03:00Over 18,000 police, as well as the Coast Guard and SWAT teams, are being mobilized as terrorism
03:06alert levels have been raised.
03:08And local media are reporting that large-scale protests planned throughout the week are putting
03:13the city on even higher alert.
03:16There are both anti-China and anti-U.S. protests planned, those against the U.S. protesting things
03:22like Trump's tariffs and what they call U.S. hegemonic behavior in general.
03:27So there's a feeling of anticipation here in Gyeongju, an otherwise quiet city where some
03:32of the world's biggest moments may happen in the next few days.
03:35From trade deals to high-stakes meetings, there's a lot to look out for.
