00:00The leaders of the world's two biggest powers will meet next week.
00:04A long-anticipated summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping
00:09will see the two try to work out obstacles between their two countries,
00:13from energy to trade policy to Taiwan.
00:17I'm sure Taiwan will be a topic of conversation. It always is.
00:20But I think both countries understand that it is neither one of our interests
00:24to see anything destabilized happen in that part of the world.
00:27We don't need any destabilizing events to occur with regards to Taiwan or anywhere in the Indo-Pacific.
00:33And I think that's to the mutual benefit of both the United States and the Chinese.
00:37Taiwan has long been a sticking point between Washington and Beijing.
00:41China claims Taiwan as its territory, even though it does not govern the island.
00:46Washington is Taipei's biggest supplier of defense equipment,
00:50weapons that would be used to fend off a potential Chinese invasion.
00:54According to reports, Xi is expected to press Trump to change long-standing U.S. policy on Taiwan,
01:01from one that doesn't support Taiwan independence, to one that opposes it.
01:05But since the last few years, the president has never heard the president directly say that
01:14the United States is a counter-right attitude.
01:17Because the counter-right attitude is in the serious risk of spending,
01:21or its埡ç attitude,
01:22it is evident that it is not a counter-right attitude.
01:26Any outcome that changes U.S. support for Taiwan could have huge consequences for the region.
01:31Japanese Prime Minister Takai-chi Sanae has said that Japan could intervene
01:36in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan,
01:39a statement that has angered Beijing.
01:42Speaking at a forum on U.S.-Japan relations,
01:45Japan's former defense minister said
01:47it was important for Washington to hold the line on Taiwan policy.
01:52If President Trump says something that could be construed
01:55as being more wobbly than what we've had in the past,
01:57this could have a great impact on the allied nations.
02:01Taipei and Beijing's relationship is not just a matter between the two countries.
02:06What happens here could have ramifications that ripple across the world.
02:10And many countries are watching for any signs that the balance might shift
02:14when the world's biggest powers meet next week.
