00:00Psychedelic therapy shows promise for long-term depression relief.
00:05Depression affects over 18 million U.S. adults yearly and leads to more than 41,000 suicides.
00:12Traditional treatments include medication and therapy, but new research from Ohio State
00:16University suggests psychedelic-assisted therapy may offer lasting relief.
00:21How does it differ from current treatments? Let's find out.
00:24Building on a 2021 trial with 24 participants with major depressive disorder, researchers
00:34followed 18 people over five years. Participants received two psilocybin doses plus therapy
00:40and completed questionnaires and clinician assessments. At one year, 58% were in remission,
00:46rising to 67% at five years. Lead author Alan Davis noted lasting improvements in depression,
00:52anxiety, and overall functioning, emphasizing the importance of strong therapist support.
00:58While some tried psychedelics alone, clinical guidance proved far more effective.
01:05Only 18 of 24 participants joined the five-year follow-up. Even assuming the rest relapsed,
01:11results showed significant depression reduction. Without a control group and with many using other
01:16treatments, benefits can't be solely credited to psilocybin. Still, participants reported lasting
01:22improvements in how they managed and related to depression.
