00:37Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:39As the federal takeover of the Washington Police Force enters week three,
00:43some National Guard troops on the streets of D.C. are now armed.
00:47More than 2,000 guardsmen from multiple states are deployed under President Trump's crime crackdown in the Capitol.
00:53A Defense Department official says most will carry service pistols,
00:57but a small number will be issued rifles.
01:00The troops are concentrated in high tourist areas like Union Station and the National Mall.
01:05Commanders say they can use their weapons only for self-defense and as, quote,
01:10a last resort if they face an imminent threat of death or serious harm.
01:15For now, their mission has not changed, guarding landmarks and providing a visible presence.
01:20They're still not making arrests and remain on the sidelines of law enforcement in the district.
01:26Same topic now.
01:27While the takeover in Washington continues, the White House is now zeroing in on another city, Chicago.
01:34Over the weekend, city and state officials blasted the idea of a National Guard deployment,
01:39calling it unlawful, unnecessary, and a political stunt.
01:42The Washington Post first reported that the Pentagon has been drawn into discussions
01:47considering options to send guard troops as early as September.
01:51President Trump framing the move as a crackdown on crime and immigration.
01:55We're going to make our country very safe.
01:57We're going to make our cities very, very safe.
02:00Chicago is a mess.
02:01You have an incompetent mayor, grossly incompetent.
02:04And we'll straighten that one out probably next.
02:07That'll be our next one after this.
02:08And it won't even be tough.
02:12Trump has long painted Chicago as crime-ridden,
02:15even as city data shows violent crime is actually falling.
02:18Mayor Brandon Johnson says homicides are down more than 30 percent in the past year,
02:23shootings by nearly 40 percent.
02:25This is who Chicago really is.
02:28What's being painted by the federal government is false.
02:32We love one another.
02:33We support one another.
02:34We put our arms around one another.
02:36Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker called Trump's plan a manufactured crisis to score political points,
02:43posting Donald Trump is attempting to manufacture a crisis, politicize Americans who serve in uniform,
02:49and continue abusing his power to distract from the pain he's causing families.
02:54Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel went even further, telling CNN Sunday the threat has little to do with crime.
03:01When you look at what he did in D.C., he's not going to actually deal with crime.
03:05This is an attempt to get the goods through customs.
03:07This is an attempt to deal with cities that are welcoming cities, known as sanctuary cities, and deal with immigration.
03:13If approved, Chicago would be the third city to face a federal deployment in recent months,
03:18following crackdowns in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
03:21The White House is talking of progress in its push to end the war in Ukraine.
03:27Vice President J.D. Vance says Russia has made, quote, significant concessions,
03:31but so far there's little evidence of a breakthrough.
03:34Vance argues the Kremlin is backing off some of its earlier demands,
03:38including installing a puppet regime in Kyiv.
03:41Appearing on NBC, he called it the first sign of flexibility in three and a half years of fighting.
03:46I think the Russians have made significant concessions to President Trump
03:51for the first time in three and a half years of this conflict.
03:54They've actually been willing to be flexible on some of their core demands.
03:58They've talked about what would be necessary to end the war.
04:01Of course, they haven't been completely there yet or the war would be over,
04:06but we're engaging in this diplomatic process in good faith.
04:09We are trying to negotiate as much as we can with both the Russians and the Ukrainians
04:14to find a middle ground to stop the killing.
04:15But Ukrainian President Zelensky says Moscow still does not want to end the war.
04:22There's no meeting planned between Zelensky and Vladimir Putin,
04:25despite Donald Trump's push and the White House saying last week
04:28that such a meeting is set to happen in just weeks.
04:32There was one small sign of dialogue over the weekend.
04:35Russia and Ukraine swapped 146 prisoners of war on each side
04:39in a deal mediated by the United Arab Emirates.
04:42Many had been held since 2022.
04:44And as Ukraine marked Independence Day, the fighting has intensified.
04:49Russia claims Ukrainian drones struck energy facilities inside its borders this past weekend,
04:55while Kiev reports downing dozens of Russian drones overnight.
04:59The immigration case that's become a flashpoint in President Trump's crackdown
05:04takes another turn this morning.
05:06Kilmar Abrego Garcia, born in El Salvador, living in Maryland with his wife and child,
05:11must report to ICE in Baltimore.
05:14He's facing deportation.
05:16The question is, where to?
05:18Abrego Garcia walked free on Friday from a Tennessee jail,
05:22greeted with cheers, flowers, and chants of,
05:24yes, we did it, as he embraced his family after more than 160 days in detention.
05:29But his freedom could be short-lived.
05:32ICE has ordered him to report this morning,
05:34telling his lawyers the administration intends to deport him to Uganda
05:38after he rejected a deal to go to Costa Rica if he pleaded guilty and stayed in jail.
05:44Back in March, he was wrongfully deported to El Salvador due to a paperwork error.
05:48Instead of letting him go, the administration fought to keep him in custody,
05:53accusing him of MS-13 gang ties, which he and his supporters strongly deny.
05:58Postal services around the world are hitting pause on deliveries to the United States.
06:03The move comes amid confusion over President Trump's new tariff rules.
06:07Starting Friday, the exemption for low-cost packages under $800 disappears.
06:12Postal services in countries like Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Belgium say
06:17they don't know how the duties will be collected or processed,
06:20so they are stopping shipments for now.
06:23Under the new rules, personal gifts under $100 will still be duty-free,
06:27but everything else will be treated like a standard import.
06:31Finally this morning, the odds may be astronomical, but so is the payout.
06:36Tonight's Powerball drawing is the 10th largest in history,
06:39worth more than $750 million.
06:43The cash option, not bad, a cool $338 million.
06:47Nobody has hit the jackpot in 37 straight drawings.
06:51Maybe number 38 won't break the streak.
06:54Odds of winning?
06:55One in $292 million.
06:58Odds of daydreaming about winning?
06:59Pretty much one in one.
07:01Somebody will get lucky eventually, we know that.
07:03We'll find out tonight at 1059 Eastern.
07:06By the way, they say if you win, not to make any rash decisions right away.
07:12So would buying a townhouse near the Denver airport overlooking the Rocky Mountains be a rash decision?
07:19I don't think so.
07:20How about just an expensive steak dinner at Gibson Steakhouse in Chicago?
07:24Yum.
07:26Not a bad option either.
07:27All right, before we head out, here's what else we're tracking today.
07:29This morning, as a reminder, Kilmar Abrego-Garcia is due at the ICE facility in Baltimore.
07:36It's a story we'll be monitoring closely today.
07:39At noon, President Trump welcomes South Korea's president to the White House.
07:43Tariffs, defense, and China all up for discussion.
07:46Also at noon, a major cartel kingpin known as El Mayo is expected to plead guilty to drug trafficking in New York.
07:54And later this afternoon, a federal judge weighs the question of whether to dismiss a lawsuit over deportations to countries where migrants have no ties.
08:03Hey, be the smartest person in the elevator.
