00:00The bleeding continues for discount carrier Spirit Airlines.
00:03The company is slashing service to a dozen cities as its financial troubles deepen.
00:10Starting in October, Spirit will no longer fly to Albuquerque, New Mexico,
00:15Birmingham, Alabama, Boise, Idaho, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Columbia, South Carolina,
00:21Portland, Oregon, and Salt Lake City, as well as four cities in California,
00:25Oakland, San Diego, Sacramento, and San Jose.
00:28Planned service in Macon, Georgia, is now off the table.
00:32Spirit says it will reach out to passengers with refunds or options.
00:36The cuts come just weeks after Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy,
00:41its second time in less than two years.
00:44After emerging in March, the Florida-based airline has lost nearly $257 million in just a few months.
00:50The restructuring plan includes shrinking the fleet and reducing staff.
00:54140 captains will be demoted to first officers on October 1st, followed by 270 pilot furloughs in November.
01:03Hundreds of flight attendants have already taken voluntary leave.
01:06Despite the cuts, Spirit insists it is not preparing to shut down.
01:11But United Airlines is not taking any chances or waiting,
01:14announcing it will add flights to 15 cities early next year, including Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Las Vegas.
