00:00Russell Wilson's leash as starting quarterback in New York will be long enough to get him to week
00:04two against the Dallas Cowboys. Brian Dable made that clear Monday after hedging somewhat
00:10following the Giants' loss to Washington Sunday afternoon.
00:15It was an ugly performance for Wilson in his Giants' debut, not just for the 35-year-old,
00:21but for the entire offense, which managed just 231 yards in a 21-6 loss. The former Super Bowl
00:29winner on his fourth team in five seasons went 17-37 for 168 yards and a 59.3 passer rating.
00:40His 46% completion mark is the worst in Wilson's 53 career games with at least 35 pass attempts,
00:48according to NFL research. Dable, however, looked at the tape overnight and said Wilson made some
00:54good decisions.
00:55After a game, you know, it's an emotional game. It's a tough game. You know, didn't play particularly
01:02well, I would say, collectively. But in terms of making any of those decisions, really at any
01:07position or schematic changes, I'd like to, you know, do it with a clear head and watch the tape.
01:14And again, like I said yesterday, that game just doesn't fall on Russell Wilson.
01:20You know, you got to do a better job collectively, coaching, playing, but Russell will be the starter.
01:27A 10-time Pro Bowler, Wilson signed a one-year $10.5 million deal in late March to become the
01:34starter in New York. He was especially ineffective under pressure on Sunday, completing just two of
01:4012 passes for 26 yards with two sacks and two scrambles. New York stalled twice in the red zone.
01:46Wilson believes that's where the major failures occurred.
01:50When we get down the red zone balls on the one, two-yard line, we got to score. They stopped us.
01:54They played well. We got back down there again and they stopped us again. So, I mean, that changes
02:01the complexion of the game tremendously.
02:03Why, casual fans might ask, is this an issue after just the first week? Well, the Giants have
02:09their quarterback of the future waiting in the wings. They took Mississippi's Jackson Dart in the
02:14first round of April's draft. Dart had a great preseason, completing 32 of 47 passes for 372 yards
02:22and three touchdowns. He didn't throw an interception. He also ran for a touchdown.
02:27Coach Dable, though, isn't ready to throw him into the fire. Yet.
02:31I have confidence in Russ and we're, you know, we're doing everything we can do each week to
02:37develop Jackson. You know, he spends a lot of time in the building, spends a lot of time
02:43after practice, going through things that he needs to go through to prepare himself to be,
02:49you know, if he gets called upon, to be ready to go.
02:51Wilson says he feels no added pressure with Dart as the backup, but the fan base and media
02:56in New York are relentless. They'll keep asking about a potential change as long as the Giants
03:02offense struggles. Another NFC East opponent awaits Sunday. The Cowboys will host New York,
03:08with both teams desperate to avoid an 0-2 start. For Straight Arrow News, I'm Chris Francis.
