00:00In today's NFL, most teams utilize what they call a running back by committee approach to the ground
00:06game. Some don't want to spend big money on the position of running back. Others haven't found a
00:11back that can take on the workload. The Philadelphia Eagles did both when they traded for Saquon
00:17Barkley before the 2024 season. The move helped them win a Super Bowl. This year, Barkley can do
00:26something no other player in NFL history has done. Rushed for over 2,000 yards in back-to-back
00:33seasons. He joined the exclusive club last year, rushing for 2,005 yards, and he was the league's
00:40offensive player of the year. Only nine players in NFL history have rushed for 2,000 yards in a season,
00:47a list that includes some of the game's greatest legends. It will be a rare accomplishment going
00:52forward, even with a 17-game schedule, because the days of the workhorse feature back, like Dickerson,
00:59Sanders, and Peterson, are long gone. Today's NFL is geared towards situational football and keeping
01:05players fresh and injury-free. Barkley credits the consistency during his eight-year career with a
01:11routine that requires a daily planner to keep things straight. It worked for me last year, so I'm not
01:19going to go away from it. It's the little things I have, whether it's my daily planner, going there
01:23from being detailed to what I'm doing in my schedule, writing out my small wins, writing the
01:29things I want to accomplish throughout the day. He's a little behind the pace this season, rushing for
01:33a total of 148 yards in two games. In both those games, defenses stacked eight and sometimes nine
01:40players near the line of scrimmage to make Barkley grind out the yards. That's nothing new, but it means
01:46the Eagles' offense has to make adjustments, and Barkley says the chess game is his favorite part.
01:52Throughout the game, you've got to find what's working and find what's not working and capitalize.
01:57Sometimes you've got to go on the sidelines and draw some plays up, something that we did in the past.
02:01We've done that in the past in big games and playoff games. That's just probably my favorite part,
02:06is figuring each other out, especially in the running game, how they attack the running game and
02:10knowing when and where to take that cut. If you want to be one of the rare feature backs still
02:15thriving in the NFL, it doesn't hurt to get some advice from one of the best to ever do it.
02:20Barkley reached out to the league's all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith during the offseason
02:25to learn more about how defenses will play it. I still can pinch myself with moments like that.
02:30I got to go to my mom's house that day, and I talked to my dad, and I was like,
02:33you don't believe who I was on the phone with. Stuff like that to me, my life doesn't feel real
02:38when those moments happen. Smith, who rushed for 18,355 yards in his career,
02:44relayed some valuable lessons about career longevity and taking care of your body.
02:49Will Barkley make history again? If everyone stays healthy, especially his offensive line,
02:55he's got a shot. Sunday, the Eagles play the Los Angeles Rams. In two games against them last year,
03:01he had his best performances, rushing for 255 yards in the regular season and 205 more in the playoffs.
