00:00The Super Bowl, the Daytona 500, MMA matches, President Donald Trump is filling up the sports calendar.
00:06Sunday, the men's U.S. Open Tennis Championship final was on the docket.
00:11Like most of the president's appearances, the reaction was mixed,
00:15and what fans saw on the broadcast didn't tell the full story.
00:21Trump heard some boos and a few cheers when he arrived before the final match
00:26between Carlos Alcaraz and Yannick Sinner.
00:29The match began more than a half hour late because of the logistical challenges
00:33accommodating Trump's entourage and increased security
00:37as fans filed into the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York.
00:42Journalist Ben Rothenberg reported Saturday that the United States Tennis Association
00:47asked broadcasters in a memo not to show reactions to Trump.
00:52We ask all broadcasters to refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions
00:58in response to the president's attendance in any capacity.
01:02The USTA said ESPN and ABC didn't completely follow that directive.
01:07They showed Trump during the national anthem when there were some boos, but they did not linger.
01:12The loudest boos came after the first set when Trump was shown on the video board.
01:16He mouthed the words, thank you, afterward.
01:19But none of that was shown to the viewing audience at home because the match was in a commercial break.
01:24The White House said it didn't ask the USTA to censor reactions,
01:28and the USTA spokesperson later told reporters that they regularly asked broadcasters to refrain
01:33from showcasing off-court disruptions.
01:36Trump seemed pleased with the crowd reaction.
01:38The fans were really nice. I didn't know what to expect.
01:42Usually you would say that would be a somewhat progressive, as they say nowadays, crowd.
01:47Sometimes some people would call it liberal, but we'll use the word they like to use, progressive.
01:52But they were great. The fans were great.
01:55Alcaraz beat Sinner in four sets to win his second major title at Flushing Meadows
02:00and the sixth Grand Slam title of his career.
02:03He avenges a loss to Sinner at Wimbledon.
02:06Between them, the two stars have won all eight major championships played in the last two seasons.
02:13Trump was impressed by the showing.
02:15First of all, the two players have unbelievable talent.
02:18It just seemed that they hit the ball harder than I've ever seen before.
02:22Incredible talent. And I enjoyed it.
02:25And I used to go all the time, but, you know, lately it's a little bit more difficult to go.
02:30Trump was a guest of Rolex CEO Jean-Frederic DeFour.
02:34It was his first appearance at the Grand Slam tournament since 2015, when he was a candidate for president.
02:39Trump had a suite at the tournament for nearly two decades and gave it up in 2017 during his first term.
02:46No word on the next sporting event Trump will attend, but he is scheduled to help announce the FIFA World Cup draw in December at the Kennedy Center.
