00:00Congressman Jerry Nadler, who's represented New York City in Congress for more than 32 years,
00:05announced he'll retire at the end of his current term and won't seek re-election in 2026.
00:10The 78-year-old's decision marks a continued generational shift within the Democratic Party.
00:18Nadler said in a statement,
00:20This decision has not been easy, but I know in my heart it is the right one
00:24and that it is the right time to pass the torch to a new generation.
00:28He told the New York Times that former President Biden's decision to step aside for Kamala Harris influenced him.
00:34The shift in the Democratic Party has happened slowly but surely from leadership to the rank and file.
00:39I think the generational change has been underway in the House Democratic Caucus for the last several years,
00:45and it's something that every caucus member, regardless of which generation they find themselves in, has embraced.
00:53Jeffries would know. He became the House Democratic leader in 2022 after Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi decided to step back from leadership to make way for a new generation.
01:03The next time Democrats win the majority in the chamber, Jeffries is on track to be the first black House Speaker.
01:09At the committee level, Congressman Robert Garcia became the ranking member of the Oversight Committee, replacing the late Congressman Gerald Connelly.
01:17Garcia is only 47 years old and has served in Congress for just one term.
01:23To win election as the committee's top Democrat, he had to beat out an opponent who's been in Congress for more than two decades.
01:29There was already a big generational test in Texas due to the newly drawn congressional map.
01:35Republicans combined the districts of Congressman Greg Cesar and Lloyd Daggett,
01:39who would have been forced to face each other in a primary in 2026.
01:43Now, the 78-year-old Daggett announced he will not seek re-election if the maps are upheld in court.
01:50That paves the way for the 36-year-old Cesar to hold the seat.
01:54Cesar is the chair of the House Progressive Caucus, where he follows in the footsteps of Democratic Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders.
02:01Daggett was a moderate Democrat who more closely aligned with the likes of Pelosi and Hoyer.
