00:00Fewer Americans are choosing to register as Democrats.
00:04A new analysis of voter registration data shows the number of voters declared as Democrats
00:10is on the decline and Republicans are gaining.
00:16According to a new analysis by the New York Times and data firm L2,
00:21in 30 states that track voter registration by political party,
00:25Democrats lost ground to Republicans in every one of those states between 2020 and 2024.
00:34During those four years, Democrats lost 2.1 million registered voters,
00:39while Republicans gained 2.4 million.
00:44This graph illustrates how Democrat share of new registered voters declined in recent years.
00:51In 2018, Democrats accounted for 34% of all new voter registrations.
00:58Only 20% of new voter registrations were Republicans.
01:02But by 2023 and 2024, Republicans closed the gap and then some.
01:08In six years, the share of new registered Republicans rose 9 percentage points,
01:13while the Democrats dropped nearly 8 points.
01:17With more Americans registering as Republicans than Democrats in 2024.
01:23The Times reported more and more voters are registering as independents.
01:28And according to this data, it's coming mostly at the expense of the Democrats.
01:33This data could explain why President Trump had so much success in 2024,
01:39sweeping all battleground states and winning the popular vote.
01:43According to the data, each battleground saw Democrats' voter registration edge dissipate.
01:49In North Carolina, Republicans erased roughly 95% of the Democratic registration advantage
01:57that was there in fall of 2020.
02:00Their advantage went from 517,000 more registered voters than Republicans to 53,000.
02:07And in Pennsylvania, from 2020 to July of this year, 314,000 Democrats have switched to Republicans,
02:16nearly double the 161,000 Republicans who switched to the Democratic Party.
02:23The dip in Democratic voter registration comes as the party grapples with questions about its future.
02:30Polls show no clear frontrunner for 2028,
02:33Although former Vice President Kamala Harris consistently leaves the field.
02:38She recently declined to run for California governor,
02:42a move many see as leaving the door open for a run at the White House.
02:47California Governor Gavin Newsom has also gained ground in recent months.
02:51A new poll out this week even showed California voters prefer Newsom over Harris for president.
02:58At the same time, the Democratic Party faces other headwinds.
03:02Approval ratings for Democrats in Congress have slipped to historical lows.
03:07And the party is struggling financially.
03:10Politico reports the Democratic National Committee has just $15 million in cash
03:17compared to the Republican National Committee's $80 million on hand.
03:22What voter registration numbers look like in 2025, that information is limited as not all of the states which disclose party registration
03:32have updated their numbers since the 2024 election.
03:37And even though there is a decline in registered Democrats,
03:40there are still more registered Democrats nationwide than Republicans.
03:45But that is also partly because of available data and how individual states register voters.
03:52Some blue states like California allow people to register by party,
03:57while some red states like Texas don't register voters by party affiliation.
