00:00hey guys welcome to the show and it looks a little different doesn't it yeah this is a brand new fab

00:11room and we're gonna man we're gonna need it today we got a five-gallon bucket of rust out

00:15there with wheels on it no joke yeah no doubt we've got a 1989 d100 dodge ramp pickup truck

00:21man that thing is patina'd out and maybe a little beyond so we might need everything in here to put

00:26it back together let's go have some fun we've all got that one friend right yeah we got them too

00:36our friend bought this truck he's driving by this property he's like oh my god is that a d100

00:43i gotta have it and this truck is no doubt fell out a hundred foot ugly tree and hit every branch

00:49but he had to have it you know why because in here there's gonna be a five seven hemi in here

00:54at some point that's right and that means out here he says he likes the patina which is really

01:00just saying i don't have the money for a paint job but we got ways to dress up dial it up make this

01:05thing actually a really cool sleeper but there's a fine line between patina and rot and we got some

01:11of that rot then we clearly crossed the line in a few areas yes swing down over here man so you can

01:17see up front we start and blistering through we've got some pretty whoo that's not that doesn't sound

01:25like thin sheet metal that's sound deadly material that's something up here right the rot really gets

01:32ugly so safe to say this thing needs a whole new hat yeah yeah so it's that bald guy that you know

01:40always wears a hat it's like well what can i do there can it be safe can it be patch paneled we're not sure

01:45yet because we don't know what's hiding underneath all the rust and the bondo and flaky paint so

01:50today's all about prep see what we have for structure left starting to do some repairs getting

01:55ready for that swap up front the owner's got a nice piece of clean section from from a donor don't

02:02think it's big enough let's see what we got let's pull the windshield out it's a good start point

02:06you can kind of see what's going on up here so check it out

02:22i'm gonna pull the glass out we've got the molding out and it's pretty much ready to come out now this

02:27glass is bad you can see all the frosting here it's separating we've got scratches from the wipers so

02:32really don't need it so this is gonna be a from willie's side hey hold my beer i'm about ready

02:37to give birth so let's get in the position and have some fun in the movies it only takes one kick

02:45ready all right three two

02:47that's all it took was one kick one kick that's all it took

03:17all right digging into this thing and get to see what's underneath the layers right because there's

03:29inner structure and outer structure and there's good news and some bad news now clearly the bad

03:34news is there's a lot of rot here a lot of bondo here but you know what's amazing is this front

03:39structure here seems pretty solid and if you go back you know four inches or so back here seems pretty

03:46solid so from an inner structure we might be able to let's say rebuild that and then if we want to

03:53continue to close it and cap it back in so maybe maybe there's a lot of maybes here but understand

04:01we still have the corners you can see where you know obviously some bondo work has been in play

04:06if you see that it's like a play-doh fun factory yeah if you don't have metal just put some plastic and

04:11squeeze the putty in and build it back up it'll be fine i promise well they did that on both both

04:18corners so we have to see what that structure is under here but like bird was saying this looks okay

04:23this looks okay so some promising stuff here now yeah this just you know once we made the cut this

04:29just peeled right off so there was literally no anything holding that on yeah what do you got going

04:35on over there though that's where it gets yeah so you know we're kind of making our way around so i just

04:40got to finish getting this corner of the cab off but i'm sure it's going to all look pretty similar

04:44and as we work our way back here right we had a lot of rot inside the door frame but once we cut

04:50that away again the inner structure is pretty decent there's a hole there's a hole right in here but i

04:54think we can patch that okay um so we could again kind of layer it back and build it up now one thing we

05:02got to consider is this strip drip edge here yeah and uh you know we can make that we can shape that

05:10but how we kind of layer it and build it back up and get everything to look uniform it's all in the

05:16detail so again a lot of maybes why don't we keep cutting out and seeing if the maybes go one way or the

05:23other let's do it we're finished peeling the onion back not much more different right just a little

05:47bit more of the same so if we work our way back here right once we told the owner you know hey man

05:53you got some rotted stuff we're gonna have to cut out he's like i got you covered i got i got donor

05:58parts and and he brought this which um i mean will help it will definitely help but we're gonna have a

06:07lot more but at least we can start with this one here so uh what's nice is this is in pretty good shape

06:12got a little spot of rust here but we can clean that up if we need to and then we can start pulling this

06:16structure apart hit these spot welds right because we really want to get this section right so if we

06:23can get this section out which would be nice and then if we look on the flip side you can see the

06:28drip rail here we can get some spot welds out we really want to use this and this corner because this

06:34is going to be our template for the shape right so this actually may end up being a pretty valuable part

06:41one for saving us a little bit of complicated work in here but two i think we can replace through

06:46here and maybe start making this corner so then we got both of these lines coming together and we

06:52can wrap it around and kind of mirror this on the other corner because again we don't have a reference

06:56point so maybe the first thing to do start stripping this thing down see if we can get it in individual

07:02components that we can fit in there and start layering back and then we'll still have to deal with

07:07the drip edge which is going to be a pretty complicated part and capping it off so you get willy

07:13some special tools here we'll start popping these welds off and see if you've got some usable parts

07:22all right we got our donor section pretty much torn apart it's uh it's quite a little bit of effort

07:27you know first you want to take a spot weld put a center punch on it you might put a small drill bit

07:32on it and then you're going to use the spot remover right and this thing will compress a little bit

07:39hopefully hold it center drill that sucker out and so voila we got a couple of good usable parts

07:45so yeah up here i'm gonna show them the rust spot yeah remember this was rusted all the way through so

07:50we cut that back and it goes something like this right to meet this radius up here so we'll grab that

07:58in reuse this piece right here so it saves us that interior piece which is gonna you know be important

08:04out here yeah and this is uh this is gonna be a really handy one too so right this is that top

08:10door edge and it fits in a little bit tricky like let's see if i can get her

08:23something like that there we go all right so that's going to start building all this we've got the inner

08:30door frame and we've got a little bit of this roof line here so we know how that's shaped so

08:39that coming together we've got to work on how this drip rail's gonna come together so we have

08:46we have a little bit of the old door here so so we can kind of cut that uh this is a little bent up

08:52we'll reshape it but we can get it to loop around but man we got to get it all the way across so why don't

08:57you follow us into our little fabrication room we put together and we'll show you how we're gonna

09:02knock that out all right welcome back you guys and wow look what we got here our brand new fab room

09:14how about this man uh just had to clean up a little bit of space and man this is a great area we can just

09:19kind of bounce between machines right right favorite spot we took a lot of our stuff from the the floor

09:24up there brought it back here so we come back here and do a lot of the grunt dirty work so

09:28this is where we really get fun and have some well some lessons like we're gonna do right now

09:33yeah now all right we talked about that drip rail and that's gonna be a tricky little part

09:37yeah to really make it the same way isn't it wild how that little part you think a drip rail or a

09:42door like man nothing to it but man it's really intricate a lot of compound bends turns

09:47and a lot of things that you try to figure out you know just how do i recreate all that

09:51yeah so let's walk you through some of the shapes so willie's over here we got a new uh bebo this

09:56thing is awesome from woodward fab yeah so while he's setting up different dyes seeing what they do

10:01to try to recreate this guy i'll show you a little bit about what the challenge is

10:05yeah i can make this there's a couple yeah a lot a lot let's look a little bit about this drip edge

10:12right you can see the uh spot weld here so this attaches up on the roof right um and then it kicks out

10:20and then it has this little droopy edge down here and that's so water comes down it hangs and drops

10:26instead of wicks underneath collects and and rots so to get this shape is going to be pretty challenging

10:33so we've got a lot of complex shapes going on so this is going to be an easy bend but we may decide

10:39to leave that off attach it a different way because this is going to add too much structure to get it to

10:44curl let's see what we can do uh we want to show you more of the figure it out instead of the hero

10:51shots right a lot of times you get on social and someone's just like bang bang bang it's magic well

10:57yeah you got to figure that out a little bit because each step might not get you the crease

11:01or the step or whatever that you want perfectly so we're going to play around with our new b-roller

11:07here give us some skinny this is brand new for us man we're yeah man this is the woodwork fab

11:12professional 42 inch i mean this thing is massive 42 inch power bead roller and man everything you

11:18can imagine from the little bead roller just bigger better and you know you get this variable speed foot

11:24control so really cool you got adjustable shaft up here so you can play with this lower diad pressure

11:30i'm just trying to figure that tip in this thing's gonna be awesome we can build a lot of cool stuff with

11:34this yeah and they got all different sizes so we got the big bad version yeah full die but you can

11:39get smaller ones you can get the hand crank ones yeah but this is powered both directions so yeah we

11:44got a whole bunch of dies with it as i mentioned we got our 3d printer over here to get this radius

11:50right just perfect we'll see if we can print a die if it works uh but a lot of times you'll have to make

11:56the tooling for whether it's a power hammer or bead roller to get the exact shape you're looking for so

12:03great selection to start off with we're going to play around and see we can figure that out

12:17so now we're going to squash it nice and flat in the roller here so we got just flat rollers so we

12:35can get a good crease along there might be it on the first pass you'll see how this looks and it might

12:44be in the money there see all right gang check that out all right it's pretty sweet actually yeah all

13:01right so we've got our profile nice and straight the truck is not straight yeah um so willy's going

13:08to show you how we knocked that part out but we kicked up the flange this guy here and then we

13:13put a little bit of curl in it by putting some really light brakes here and anytime you use big

13:17equipment you can always come back with hammer dolly and get the little finessing that you need

13:21right right that'll meet the profile of the truck you know it's been last time you've seen a windshield

13:25flush like that you haven't so how do you do that we just grab it at both ends and just you need a

13:30willy yeah no actually we have a shrinker that's right shrinker stretcher for that and uh it does a fine

13:35job of finding that profile so anytime you have a piece of metal like this and you need some sort

13:40of small bend curve in it man grab your shrinker stretcher slowly but those things man will put a

13:45bend in anything it doesn't matter creases folds whatever it'll bend it up let's go start fitting

13:50some of this stuff up and see how that thing's coming together really i just i did that's what he

13:55usually does hey gang inside a radiator you got a lot of tight spaces now iron types thorough flush it's a

14:04super concentrated powder that'll break down that gelled coolant and clear out heater cores in under

14:1012 minutes yeah that's pretty fast man and because it removes rust and scalene it keeps engine temps

14:15down pros have trusted it for over 50 years and it works on all kinds of cooling systems and even

14:21tackles that tough dex cool mud and gm and chrysler cooling systems and don't forget to add a bottle all

14:26weather seal to stop and prevent coolant leaks in your radiator heads and intake gaskets too

14:31hey gang we're going to talk today about carbon deposits that's usually the slow death for a lot

14:40of engines sometimes very quick now what is a carbon deposit well you know any kind of fuel or oil is

14:46made up of hydrocarbon chains you burn off the hydrogen you're left with carbon right so you get

14:51carbon all inside your engine the combustion chamber because you've got it coming in from the oil at the

14:57bottom and fuel coming in from the top right so we've all seen it before uh you know from the top

15:03side whether you have pfi right you're spraying your fuel in and you'll start to see carbon build up

15:09on top of the piston down in the rings starts making the rings not move like they should now normally a

15:15ring has a lot of free motion in it and as the piston goes up and down it'll seep and drag or one way

15:21or the other it seats and seals this and it also seals to the side of the cylinder walls so you get

15:27carbon deposits in there all of a sudden that ring is stuck it can't move and oil is going to start

15:32coming up here building carbon really fast now if you think about your direct injection right that's

15:39in the chamber so the tip of that sitting in there in that hot space so you spray the fuel which is

15:44great a lot of times you stop spraying something you see a little drip of fuel it's going to get burnt

15:50leave deposits on the end of that thing so check a look at some of these pistons here right and you

15:55can see a lot of the carbon deposits and they can start again affecting those rings and carbon

16:00deposits can also be a source for spark right so you got your spark plug here it's timed perfectly

16:07but you start getting carbon deposits here without a good solid aluminum base to suck the heat out

16:13it can be a spark plug and that's where you get that instantaneous knock boom and failure of your

16:19engine so what can we do about all this we clean it how do you do it one of our favorites gasoline

16:26extreme from hot shot secret this stuff is awesome it's a nitrogen based pea polyether amine it's going

16:34to go in there and give it a deep clean get all the deposits from rings combustion chamber backside of

16:40valves even your injectors all the way back up to your fuel pump it also lubricates so it's going to bring

16:47back your idle your emissions your fuel economy and from automotive research most engines right it's

16:54got carbon deposits in it five ten percent hit on fuel economy of course emissions are really important

17:00these days so pick up some gasoline extreme run it through that engine get it nice and clean your engine

17:20all right all right gang we're gonna take a little break on our truck over there clean up a little

17:24bit because we got the call hemi parts are ready to pick up yeah yeah we're done with the fab stuff

17:29on the truck but not done with the truck at all because the goods are in that hemi can't wait to grab those

17:34engine parts have some fun with that we got a little dilemma though i learned out my truck all i got

17:38is my wife's explorer right and if she knows i'm going to be carrying a bunch of greasy parts in her

17:43truck she's going to flip her lid wait wait all right let's be honest his wife called him knowing he

17:49had this truck i was like don't you dare mess up the back of my truck so she laid down the law it's not

17:55hiding it's preventing so we got a plan we think it's going to work right she's already got the cargo

18:01liner back here so that's awesome right we can put whatever dirt and grease sure you know on that

18:04thing take it out wash it off yeah you've seen those a million times they're great any application

18:09they're all laser cut they fit super tight but you know a lot of people like his wife they don't want

18:15that to get dirty even though it's made to get dirty we can clean it we can clean it we're wild to prevent

18:21any additional scratches to my wife's bumper which already i never drive this car but if you asked her

18:29somehow i'm responsible for all those we got this bumper topper from weathertech so this is going to

18:34sit right here a hide all them scratches b prevent any new ones right right so man we're about there

18:43yeah yeah so we're going to put this one on and then this is out of my truck which is awesome we're

18:47going to bring it over yeah this is our cargo tech pro this thing is pretty sweet because you can adjust

18:54it right you set it in it's got these good rubber kind of bases so it sticks it doesn't slide around

18:59anywhere wherever you put it and then you can just make whatever size boards and change the shapes and

19:04sizes and really pack things in so they're not rolling around banging against the sides there's

19:10nobody watching right now if you have kids you have tennis balls soccer balls basketballs all rolling

19:16around everywhere you know this is a great way to just hold everything all right let's throw this in

19:22let's get our bumper topper on let's go get our hemi parts let's go

19:47now it's time to hit the road for a test drive

19:59these hemi parts yeah man no doubt i'm not sure because it's a used hemi and toward a part what

20:04we're going to get but excited to just get the base engine ready you know let's get started let's

20:09check it out yeah yeah all right so how much uh much further before the next turn uh about a quarter

20:12mile quarter mile yeah all right oh cool there it is man all right our game we got our parts

20:19loaded up check it out we got a full long block assembly up here hopefully all good stuff but

20:24we're gonna get it checked out i don't know man when you're missing like pistons and rods uh chances

20:32are it's a toss of a coin but that's why we're bringing it back to the shop and figure it out

20:35something happened we're gonna find out what or what it did but we got heads exhaustive takes

20:41little valve covers whole front timing chain uh piece everything we need to get that thing rolling

20:46so now what you gotta do is get it in your wife's car i think we're protected let's get it to the

20:52machine shop start tearing it down right do some magna fluxing see if we got any cracks issues

20:57hopefully get this thing moving yes all right you want to drive this or that either one

21:01that'll make me nervous

21:12all right gang we are loaded up headed back to the shop to drop off all these hemi parts

21:17yeah man then we're gonna need a little cleaning hey but something's better than nothing so we'll find

21:22out where we're at see what we can do with it hopefully build us a cool little hot rod yeah no

21:25doubt hopefully you learned a little bit about sheet metal work with a little bit of innovation a little

21:30bit of tools you can accomplish just about anything and get out of the woods amen on that man so we

21:36gotta learn something we'll see you on the next two guys garage
