00:00Hey what's up you guys check it out man 1971 Corvette convertible stingray what an iconic

00:17sweet ride right well like a lot of the owners that have these cars well this owner just let

00:22it sit what does that mean that means all kinds of problems from leaky brakes in the back and

00:27this thing really leaks kind of sketchy to drive to an exhaust leak and a lot more we'll get it back

00:31in the shop dial it in dial it up and get this righteous ride a little more on the right side

00:36hey if we were to throw you in a wayback machine send you back to 1971 you might land in so i don't

00:47know a boxing match joe frazier muhammad ali the fight of the century you may be i don't know

00:52tuning your car to three dog night georgia the world or you might find five thousand two hundred

00:57and fifty dollars in your front pocket rolling to a local chevy dealership and score this yeah yeah

01:03man 1971 corvette man this is c3 third generation corvettes this is the late teens of corvettes so

01:11you know they're working through the different architectures the different bugs giving you a

01:14different platform and man this thing's really kind of that premier affordable two-seater sports car

01:20back in the day and still rolling now yeah man these are iconic right something about sitting

01:26in this car seeing these big flares over the wheels almost like a shark right man you know

01:32how many times i drew this car as a kid yeah right this is you know for my era like rolling around you

01:38see one of these go by like wow you know you got your crowns out your pencils oh no this car was like

01:45burned into my brain these cars you can still pick up fairly inexpensive but make great hot rods and

01:50resto mods man yeah really cool cars they only made 7 000 convertibles in 71 so not a lot of them

01:57man probably want to hang on to worth some good coin at one point in time no doubt man yeah this thing

02:01has some real brake issues so let's get this thing up on a lift check out these brakes

02:04okay come here check these out rivets oh yeah man wow it's amazing this car so old it still has the

02:27original rivets in it we've got some tools for that yes we do stick around guys we're gonna show you

02:32how to knock these guys off just center punching the holes so that way i get a little alignment on

02:37the drill and start skipping because that's a big drill bit for a big rivet

02:42all right on our 1971 corvette stingray cool looking car we're upgrading the brakes we got those old

03:03rotors those riveted rotors off thank god and new ones we picked up now volunteer vet products has

03:09some amazing kits all right we chose their kit the rotors are separate but you can get anything and

03:14everything you need with this kit some serious hardware upgrades really nice stuff man yeah and

03:19not just brakes a volunteer vet has just about everything you need for corvettes like from the

03:24beginning yeah through the many many many years that they've been making them front to rear bumper

03:28now we got their upgrade o-ring caliper kit now this is nice the original ones have a old style

03:34lip seal and the car sits around which a lot of these do they tend to kind of deform and cause a

03:40leak which pretty much is about what this guy's done here it's a killer for these cars to let them sit

03:45man i'm guilty of that as well you look underneath it and you're like where'd that drip where'd that

03:50puddle come from well now you know yeah so it comes with not only the upgraded calipers with o-ring

03:54seals we've got the rubber hoses the hard lines for the rear you can see all the hardware pads and

03:59everything here so it's really a complete kit ready to go and like i said whether it's sitting or

04:04driving it's good to go and stop now i'm going to check out right before we go in and put these parts

04:10on we've got the old one here i don't know if anybody's ever seen inside one it's not really

04:14complicated but but you got a piston and a bore here and we're going to try to pop one of these

04:18pistons out whoa that's all it took look at that all right we got two that came out so it's super

04:26handy you can see the old style lip seal here and this the older dust seal as well so you'd want

04:33to clean these up if you were doing a rebuild clean these up really good it's a different style

04:38piston for the o-ring so you'd have to do those as well but anyway real simple device you just have

04:43a bore in there and of course fluids connecting all of these you know eventually up to your master

04:48cylinder but all right fun little side project let's get these guys on and get this thing rolling

04:52again

04:53as it sometimes goes when you're dealing with older cars they don't like letting go of their bolts

05:08their fasteners and in this case their brake lines as you can see it's stripped out right here

05:12it's stripped out way back here as well so how do we handle stripped out bolts well we rely on

05:19something from crc called knock or loose and i swear by this stuff in my shop if you have a fastener

05:24of stuff anything you need to get free loose this stuff is fantastic all right so just a little dab right

05:30here right just a little dab there simple now we're just gonna let that sit for a couple minutes

05:37come back and well knock or loose exactly all right we'll see you guys after the break and hopefully

05:42this brake line be out of here here's this week's mouse blocker minute

05:55man rodents wreak havoc and tim is here to tell us how some of these unpleasant rodents got to his

06:02daily driver what happened tim i went out to start it one morning and of course i checked engine light

06:07and they give me a phone call and tell me uh the rodents got in a nature wiring i went and bought a

06:13mouse blocker that's solved problem for that but uh here i had to take my truck again the battery went

06:19dead and lo and behold uh the shop forgot to hook up my mouse blocker oh no oh no it happened again

06:27and that's been here probably about a month ago how much would that repair cost you if you had to pay i

06:33know what insurance covered it but how much would a repair like that cost you this last one they told

06:38me thirteen hundred dollars the first one to go around it done more damage it was twenty two hundred

06:45dollars the first time that's there's thirty five hundred dollars of damage dollars in damages from

06:52mice wow do that man hey when rotors wreak havoc people reach for mouse blocker you should too

06:58hey gang welcome back to our 71 corvette stingray project now we're doing brakes all the way around

07:09now the other side caliper was leaking so we've got a nice upgrade kit from volunteer vet products

07:16and that's going to really make sure this thing is good whether it's sitting and you know typically

07:22leaking on these old style seals or whether out there doing some performance braking now the rear is

07:27kind of nice i don't have to drill out any of the rivets you know for that assembly eight this just pops

07:31off now the only thing different though that sometimes might add a little bit of work is this

07:36sort of drum style in hat emergency brake

07:40all right so we got brand new rotors calipers hoses everything but you know 50 60 year old hardware

08:04i think we're gonna leave that aside so we're gonna do a major upgrade here

08:08let me get down to my 7 16th drawer we're gonna do some arps now these are going to be about 20

08:15percent stronger than the great eights now that's going to be from premium material it's also through

08:20hardened instead of case hardened just on the outsides and they also roll the threads which

08:25means they press to make those threads instead of cut machine material away so that's going to put a

08:31compressive stress extra strength in there which is nice now we're going to do this stainless so you know

08:36that's not going to rust that'll last forever it's going to look pretty awesome and right here we've

08:42got 12 points but whatever your fancy is 6.12 points all right anytime you got a critical fastener

08:48you want to make sure that it's got some decent lube on it in this case we're going to use actual

08:52ARP ultra torque because what you don't want to do is when you use your torque wrench you don't want

08:56to feel the friction of the threads you want that to spin smooth you want to feel the stretch of the

09:02bolt because that's what's clamping together another nice feature on these new calipers from volunteer

09:28the longer you're going to own this car all right man got all the brakes done and bled so she's good

09:37upstairs but underneath here yeah we had some exhaust that was kind of rotted out so had a couple leaks

09:44in it so we picked up this for friends at volunteer vet products again everything you need for your

09:50corvettes regardless of year mate model they have anything and everything you could ever imagine for

09:55these cars and a lot of it are upgrades yeah now this case it's a factory replacement system

10:00but an upgrade because instead of the carbon steel now you've got aluminized so it's going to last a

10:04whole lot longer fits and runs the exact same way right up to the original manifolds yeah but you can

10:10pick out different mufflers which is great so depending on the sound that you want you still have a kind

10:15of carryover system all the way to the back we can use our same tips right no welding required yeah

10:20that's really nice man for a lot of weekend warriors yeah you know you can use the clamps you don't have

10:24to worry about welding and use the factory you know exhaust hangers that we're already on here so

10:29easy way to upgrade your exhaust without getting you know your hands that dirty all right we're going

10:34to get our hands a little bit dirty and put the sucker in all right man

10:38all right here we go

11:08sounds pretty good

11:11all right so from one sound to another sound we gotta go to break right now but when we come back

11:17we're attempting to change the sound on the inside of the car too see you in a minute

11:21all right gang today we're going to talk about some of the dirty secrets about your engine oil

11:28and the life of it inside your engine now what breaks down it forms something called

11:33stiction yeah exactly what the heck is stiction well we all know friction well when it becomes a

11:39sticky tar like and you can kind of see parts up here that's starting to pick up sort of a varnishy

11:45sticky type substance and things instead of things sliding nice and smoothly like they're supposed to they

11:50kind of stick and get kind of gooey and all of a sudden a lot of function stops happening properly you

11:56can start losing performance fuel economy or even some catastrophic failures so let's look inside of

12:02our engine over here and where all that oil goes right so it starts down here in the oil sump and

12:08of course we're drawing a v8 because that's the best engine uh and it picks up inside an oil pump

12:14and starts pushing itself high pressure in various passages to feed all these critical components

12:20some of the passages are fairly large and it's just flowing but when it gets to critical components say

12:25like a lifter well there's a little piston and a plunger and a little valve in there that keeps

12:30the lash and keeps everything nice and tight so the lifter doesn't jump off the cam as it goes over

12:35the nose right it's being held in place because when it comes back down it can smack and start

12:40breaking lifters and cams right and so we flow oil up through push rods and now we've got to lubricate

12:46the pivot points inside the rocker bearings right we've got to get splash oil on the tip so we don't wear

12:52out the valves and another common place is in the turbo you've got a little shaft and bearing in

12:57there and it needs to spin up to 180 000 or more rpm that means free spinning so you get a little bit

13:03of build up a little bit of stiction in there and as the exhaust is trying to blow on the pinwheel and

13:09drive this side you're not going to get the boost performance the fuel economy you're really going to

13:14feel that impact now where does it come from we talk about breakdown well oil is just hydrocarbon chains

13:20right carbon and hydrogens well when you oxidize when you heat and you start breaking off the

13:25hydrogens you're left with carbon deposits right so this is really what we get it's engines are hot

13:33we got to oil it but we got a lot of heat that breaks down the oil and there we go so how do we

13:38how do we prevent this how do we fix it well one of our favorites stiction eliminator from hot shots

13:49and really just get a nice cleaning of everything get those varnishes out of there get parts moving

14:35hey guys welcome back to the show we got a 1971 corvette stingray pretty sweet little car small block 350

14:42under the hood now this thing is bone stock original top to bottom looks great fun little driver

14:49now you've seen us put a lot of custom auto sounds in because right they look like they're kind of

14:55factory they look at least period correct but they've got all the modern goodies in there right so this one

15:01this is the usa 850 it's got all the same bluetooth right it's got rca outs it's got dual subwoofers that

15:08go with amplifiers to really crank up sound it's even got you know the microphone so you can do your phone

15:13pretty awesome but this one is the newest with digi dial technology fully patented this one the 2025

15:21sema mobile electronics product of the year it's pretty cool now if i turn it on over here you can

15:27see it's got what looks like an old analog screen to it and you can use the dials and you can move the

15:32little red line around you can push the button and you can hit all your favorite presets but that's an

15:37but that's an actual digital screen so what you can do is you can change all sorts of different

15:42presets to get different looks so you can really kind of customize it by day or just by vehicle to

15:48what you want it's pretty neat it's kind of a virtual analog screen so it's a custom auto sound

15:55850 the usa 850 pretty cool unit we're going to get it in this car and uh really start playing around

16:02with all the sub menus and things that you can do because it is a modern radio that just looks vintage

16:08pretty neat

16:26all right so first thing we notice when i pulled this thing out it's actually a custom auto sound radio

16:32manufactured in 1992 so man the guys at least he's consistent right quality stuff good sounds

16:40uh but 30 years outdated so it's gonna be cool to bring this stereo back into you know bluetooth

16:46wi-fi all the fun stuff we have today now getting to this is a little bit cumbersome it's really just

16:52a lot of phillips screwdrivers you know just a phillip head screwdriver we've got a bunch of that go

16:56this way a bunch in here take out this big piece right here uh that allows you to bend that out

17:01get the get the radio out so you know easy to put on it's you know just a bunch of these little guys

17:07right here so be patient have some fun with it and uh won't be long for jamming from our phones in our

17:1371 corvette kind of cool

17:32you know that's nothing worse than a dead battery but you know in this case no worries if you've got

19:46put it in a burnout mode for you yeah well you got too much tread on them tires that's why i'm driving

20:01you can mess that thing up you man it's running fine

20:06whatever fix it i'll drive this one bro too much technology that's what it is you don't know how

20:10to use it i'm done fixing stuff today fix it speaking of technology what's awesome is the

20:21but you can't do anything with the pedal you can't go anywhere it's pretty awesome all right i'm gonna go

20:36out enjoying the brand new pedal commander i got 36 different modes i can put it in eco mode i can

20:43squeeze out more fuel or i can put in performance mode and get those tires ripping get that throttle

20:50response way up it's pretty awesome now what willie was experiencing is this brand new feature the

20:56anti-theft it's a really inexpensive subscription base but you can turn off your pedal if somebody

21:02wants to go steal your car and they get it to fire up and run that's great but when they hit the

21:06pedal nothing happens just idling so your car is pretty much just stuck there that's great because

21:13you can do it by your controller you can do it by your phone you can set up any mode you want any kind

21:18of driving and as you walk away you hit your anti-theft man you got that reassurance

21:26well there you have it and the vent back out on the road the brakes feel a million times better

21:30than the exhaust listen to this sounds a heck of a lot better we'll take that hope you guys picked
