00:00hey guys welcome to the show you're going to want to stick around for this one it's exciting man
00:11we are getting all prepped for an adventure ride of a lifetime out west on johnson valley trails
00:17where they do king of the hammer nice in my old jeep an 83 cj7 it's going to be great friends
00:23great shows and a great ride you got to stick around
00:30you know pretty stoked man have your ride in here and especially knowing where we're going with it
00:37yeah it's a little intimidating but i've always dreamt of doing the king of hammers trails and i
00:42built this thing as a budget build it really truly is a budget build i picked this whole jeep up for
00:47like 3 500 bucks nice back in like 2009 it had this 360 it's an amc 360. uh it had fuel injection on it
00:55which was nice i paid you're ready for this 125 for this winch at a garage sale nice right in like
01:031996 and uh had it on my ram charger and then i transferred it over to this yeah man this as
01:09far as like a budget build crawler this is right up that alley you know but we're going to some of
01:16the top trails on the country starting in big bear going to johnson valley ended up in arizona this
01:21thing is going to go on a full adventure right so we got to go through it top to bottom yeah
01:25maybe a few little upgrades keeping it within that budget mind right right now you mentioned you know
01:29getting this thing from colorado some huge things to pilot transport yeah and they've wheeled a lot
01:35of our projects over the years a lot of our personal cars over the years yeah these guys they bring out
01:39the white gloves man they know how to take you don't need white gloves on this car but they know how to
01:44take care of some of the most premium rides in the world we're gonna have some fun with this thing
01:48today man tear it apart we're gonna upgrade the brakes because it still has those old style
01:53brakes on it so and the drums in the rear you had drums in the rear but look i'm going two miles an
01:58hour over big rocks i don't necessarily care about that that's true it's an upgrade and man we're doing
02:03it because where we're going you don't want to be out on the trail and lose anything because you're
02:08gonna get stranded and the crew we're going with they'll just leave you
02:18this is a kingpin 60. it's a pretty robust front differential when you're looking at it and you've
02:24never seen the guts of this man pay attention because this is fun we're gonna blow this out
02:28show you the insides all the bearings how to pack it how to set it up it's gonna look a lot different
02:33in a matter of a couple hours so let's get into it start tearing apart all right pretty easy diving
02:38in to begin with we've got a little clip on the end there we've taken off the outer cap now we've
02:43got a couple of specialty sockets that you want to make sure you have the right sizes yeah let me tell
02:48you man uh it becomes real well kind of a piece of a puzzle so i brought all of them uh from the house
02:54because you never know these things have really just keyed different ways to unlock it and tear it apart
03:01and yeah as you can tell man if you don't have these out on the trail oh my god nightmare
03:18now we told you we're bringing a lot of friends on this because it is the adventure of a lifetime
03:33and we're going out in the middle of nowhere doing some pretty crazy you know what so we've got our
03:38friends from amsoil this is lynn man this is part of the team you guys are big sponsor of king of the
03:44hammers and brad lovell yeah and one of the top drivers out there in 4600 class he won this year
03:49right brad coming out with us all right on this big adventure ride along with a number of other
03:55you know competitive drivers competitive rigs where this one stacks up well it's it's way down here
04:02so we need everything we can get yes lynn here is you know big on right all the lubrication side of
04:08the race rig the race trucks so we want to have every advantage we can get on this one so we're
04:14going to be picking his brain on you know what kind of details what you'll be using to keep this thing
04:19together out on that trail yeah absolutely man let's get back to where we're at right now and kind of
04:23catch you up right he's got some grease there so obviously it's about time to pack some bearings
04:28and we showed you right we got the caliper and the rotor so this is our big adapter bracket that'll go on
04:34here to hold that on yeah all right we had to send the hub off to get machined right as you can see
04:39this surface here we took about three-eighths of an inch off this material so that this can fit down
04:45in here as you'll see like so so that'll pilot the rotor to position it just nicely and also had the
04:53wheel studs machined as well so they fit down in there as well packing we got to put this guy back
04:59together and on the rig what can we do on the bearing side what do you recommend well at the end of the
05:04the day we put one of the cool things about amzoil is a lot of the things that you see in the racing
05:08environment is what's actually being sold to the consumers we use racing as a test bed as a validation
05:14bed so guys like brad or yourselves on this ride will be making sure that the product is performing in
05:18these crazy extreme environments that we're going to put them in and you know why that is because racing
05:22in any fashion is always the constant search for the weakest link they don't want to be the weakest link
05:28right you don't so we we use racing as a validation point and in this case this is your this is our
05:33off-the-shelf general purpose multi-purpose grease and that's what we're going to put in these wheel
05:38bearings here it will take care of you there's a synthetic base yeah this is uh one of the cool
05:43things about grease that people don't know weird fact for you is the greasy part of grease is really
05:47just there to keep the oil in the spot where it needs to lubricate so at the end of the day if you
05:52break grease down it really is just oil we use all synthetic oils this one is a calcium
05:57sulfonate there's different types of thickeners that you can use but really that the job of that
06:01is to hold the oil in position
06:27all right as you can tell the brakes coming together that's awesome big upgrade for sure
06:35and when we come back guess what we're gonna open up these dips we've not been in these discs
06:39and they've been sitting for years and years it's gonna be interesting to see
06:43what's underneath the cover all right catch you on the other side
06:45hey gang welcome back we've got our 83 cj7 man this is willie's ride man we're upgrading for some
06:59serious trails yeah now we got lynn still from uh amsoil here and we're working on the differential
07:04now this is another area that's got super high contact pressures high loads that we want to make
07:10sure we take care of out on the trail now plan you know you can put all kinds of different weights of
07:17oil in here and the factory is going to give you some specs but that's going to be within some kind
07:21of factory parameters right but once you're out on the trail once you're out on the road and really
07:25loading up those gears yeah what do you recommend all that goes out the window at that point right it's
07:29designed to go on the highway right it's designed to not get worked over so we look at that at amsoil like
07:34all right what's the worst thing that could possibly be done to this gear loop so kind of like what willie's going to do
07:38do to it and we look at it from a performance standpoint so does the 75 90 work would it work
07:44yes but the question is what would work better and in this case we like the 75 140 yeah all the hot
07:50stuff johnson valley crazy stuff king and amber stuff is all hot so you want to make sure that you're
07:54thicker viscosity is going to win the day so the higher that number the better the problem is is that
07:59to get those numbers when they're that wide you have to start with a really good robust synthetic
08:04base stock which is what we do at amsoil now it's hard to see in there but right we've got our
08:08a ring gear and the pinion sitting in there and it's not quite a bevel gear it's a hypoid and so
08:14they move the center line of the pinion down and what that does is it gets a lot more gear contact
08:19right because you got these really high contact pressures and that's where this viscosity and lube
08:23becomes really important right there's a lot of pressure there's a lot of wiping action in there so
08:27we formulate for that a lot of ep additive goes in there boron based stuff ep stands for extreme
08:32pressure it actually forms a sacrificial layer so that the two gears can't touch together because as
08:36as soon as two metal services touch you get wear you don't want that we might actually do some
08:40gear changes in the future so we wanted to get in here inspect what we've got confirm what gears are
08:46in there and we might do something higher like a four five thirty eight five thirty eight i believe
08:50these are four fifty six five thirty eight guys that's a crawler gear all right let's do some inspections
08:57we'll get this thing buttoned up for now looped up with the good stuff and um we can kind of move on
09:03we'll come back later maybe on another show and uh pop in some goodies on the inside here
09:15three two one that's not bad it's not too bad get on your finger and you can see through it it's
09:21all right it's still clean now when we're replacing oil obviously there's all kinds of oils out there
09:28tell us a little bit of what makes this you know from amsville so unique for this particular vehicle
09:33well this one's older right this one this is our z rod oil so z stands for zinc so this has got
09:39higher zinc and phosphorus in it so flat tappet camshafts higher spring pressure type stuff not
09:44necessarily you know applicable here but you do have a flat tappet cam in that 360 plus all the
09:49mopar stuff they love 1040 they put it in everything i think those people at mopar put it in their cornflakes
09:53at one point but at the end of the day it's a 1040 really solid oil you're going to maintain your oil
09:58pressure it's got high zinc and foss one of the cool things for you is if it sits we recommend that
10:03this can be used for 5 000 miles or two years oh nice so you don't actually have to change it we've
10:08got boosted rust and corrosion protection in this product to make sure that when it's sitting everything
10:12that's coated nothing's going to rust while it's sitting in your barn or waiting waiting to be used
10:16actually seen that happen on camlos before sure right vehicles actually rust on that camlo right it's
10:22wild but you pull it apart it's been sitting for a long time you'll see some of that but
10:25this defense against it defense against the environment that that thing's going to be in
10:29we got to get them breaks done so more on the back breaks you down for that i gotta be honest with you
10:33man i got a flight you know and i'm all for getting dirty but i gotta hit it so oh so hey man well
10:40appreciate the help on the front thank you appreciate the help and the knowledge you shared with us you
10:44sure you don't want to do back breaks i'm okay all right get out of here i'll drag kevin back back
10:48brakes and next yo all right moving to the rear and just like the front we're going to stick with
10:55that 29 or 2009 ram 3500 caliper and rotor setup which is working out pretty good up there we're
11:02going to do something similar to modifying the rear but instead of using just you know the basics from
11:07the parts store or even from the dealership we're upgrading to power stop power stop is awesome they
11:12really do have any kit an upgrade kit for anything you're driving this happens to be the z36 you know truck
11:17and tow kit so if you're towing anything you got bigger truck an suv something gonna haul a trailer
11:22with this is the way to go man really unbelievable stopping power great material inside of it as well
11:28you start out looking at these crazy powder coated calipers how awesome is that man a big upgrade from
11:34that drum for sure yeah so we got them front and rear these zinc coated so they're not going to
11:39rust and corrode on you you got the slotting you got the drills and their signature series man this is
11:45carbon fiber ceramic pads so you're going to get super aggressive bite right super durable but
11:51you're not going to sacrifice any of that drivability for around town so it's perfect
11:55setup for something like this or your rig yeah no doubt man you know big surprise gonna be here
12:00how much is mud is in this drum i was wondering about that man now this thing used to have swampers on
12:06it i got a big pond on my property and you know as guys would do if you have a pond and a big truck on
12:1240s you're going to get in it uh so i imagine there's a lot of mud in here but there's a six
12:18year old still hanging on inside this big carcass no doubt same reading level even today
12:24all right we got everything stripped down here's the old backing plate with all the
12:28sea stuff in there yeah the weeds and the whatevers tadpole right there so you can see these four bolts
12:35right here this backing plate would go right on here right we've already started cutting the old one off
12:41because we're going to switch from this to this yeah and on the surface you're like wait well what
12:47is this so it's a new backing plate from dorman really cool because right here you see the bracket
12:53that's going to hold our calipers on here so it's already incorporated in this and if i ever want to
12:57run an emergency brake it's all ready to go right here so i got everything i need to transition this old
13:04drum set up to disc right gonna get this thing on the road with matching front rear brakes that's a plus
13:10all right let's keep grinding and there you have it a lot of material on the floor a little cutting
13:26a little grinding and a little welding and man we got disc brakes on here all right it's in mock-up
13:30phase right now the only thing left is some brake lines all right kevin's going to help us with that
13:35in just a second all right with all these major hardware upgrades going on gonna start turning
13:42the corner a little bit and thinking about the hydraulics now we're gonna do a major upgrade
13:46this is crown performance brake hoses now these are fantastic we use these for all of our upgrades
13:52because they've got five layers in here and don't be fooled by a lot of the offshore competition
13:58they might make a lot of claims but really what's happening in the crown brand is you've got your
14:03inner teflon and you've got this kevlar protective layer and you've got a protective layer to the
14:08stainless because we're usually thinking about the stainless but there's a lot of stacking of layers
14:12in here and you've got another protective layer over top of that stainless to keep that from one not
14:18acting like a saw and cutting through things that it might be touching but also keeping out the dirt and
14:23debris from in there that can work their way in we've got a lot of different colors to choose from we went with
14:28green to kind of match some of the theme that's already on there now these have a one piece end on them
14:34which is fantastic you'll see a lot of cheaper two-piece construction on the fittings that can kind of
14:40break and fail on you what's great about crown you can get any size and shape and fittings and ends that
14:45you need so they're gonna have anything you need for your application just pick your colors and ends and lengths
14:51and you're set to go all right so we're gonna get these things kind of routed up and then we'll get our fluids in we can do all the
14:56bleeding and whatnot get this thing stopping like a champ
15:17all right check it out you guys a big green machine under the hood and what we have here is an old fuel injection system we're gonna bring it up to modern times right
15:23let's show them what we're putting on all right man yeah it's from fitec now it's the go efi 650 horsepower
15:29it's called the gold classic and this thing has everything you need to get something like this up and
15:33rolling yeah and on top of that we've got the inline fuel and regulator master kit so everything you need
15:40to plumb the system and make it easy such a relief too man when you think about fuel injection compared
15:45especially like old carburetors oh my god night and day on the trail but when you have an old fuel injection
15:50system like that it's always a huge step up to give you something modern something you can dial in with
15:55a hand tuner something that has a lot of modern computing technology to it so you can get in really
16:00you know dial that thing up and when you look at this some great features in here as well yeah i mean
16:04right out of the gate you see it looks like a classic carburetor which is cool right it gives you that look
16:08but again with all the modern tech in it now they use fuel injectors inside but sort of an annular
16:14discharge on how they get the fuel to kind of atomize and mix as it's going down pretty slick
16:19system pretty it's kind of simple in a way which you sort of want out on the trail very dependable
16:25yeah and these are great because they've got multiple bolt patterns for different intake manifolds
16:30linkages that'll cover a lot of different setups yeah so pretty much whatever you got it's a plug and
16:35play type of system and you can get it up and running self-tuning self-learning in no time and a big
16:40improvement so let's get at it all right so we had a couple threads on our carb studs that were
16:49a little mangled up so we're going to replace them i got a couple ideas from my man willie so
16:54let's get in our arp bin over here now i'm thinking a couple things here one i'm gonna go with stainless
17:01because uh next time he's out in the swamp right doesn't have to worry about these things rusting
17:05now we're 20 stronger than your typical grade 8 fastener so i'm thinking how strong do you need
17:12to hold a carburetor but i'm banking on this thing going on its lid so when it's upside down we want
17:17to hang on to this sucker now he might even roll it so i did notice there's a dual pattern i might be
17:23able to fit eight bolts on this thing to keep it on so one thing you want to make sure you do is use a
17:29fastener lube on your threads especially like a stainless into aluminum and then thread engagement on
17:35aluminum you typically want two times the diameter of the bolt for thread engagement and then
17:40you'll be good we asked him to hit us up with a couple fuel pumps and that comes with a fuel pump
17:53we said hey man we're on the trail you never know what happens out there can you send us two
17:57and if you're restoring a 1969 to 1976 corvette you gotta check out volunteer vet man they just
18:11dropped a brand new reproduction four-speed shifter looks just like the original or if you
18:16want to rebuild your factory shifter well they got kits for that too the major kit includes new
18:21interlocks one thinner one thicker they'll tighten up sloppy shifting plus a new lever shaft control pin
18:27and a black chrome ball and t-handle just freshening up the look the minor kit gives you a new ball
18:33t-handle and a new lockout spring if you're already running a hearst for a comp plus shifter volunteer
18:39vet makes a factory style handle so your aftermarket shifter looks original now hey guys you enjoy podcasts
18:46when you're out in the shop in the garage maybe on the lawn or community work well check out the two
18:50guys garage podcast man we get out of the shop we get behind the scenes on our personal projects we talk to
18:56builders racers everybody in the aftermarket it's a lot of fun you guys should check it out
19:07all right last thing to wrap up this project man is turning into a tank yeah yeah this really does
19:13i've got the cow protection here yep so that'll go right up on there right sliders down here and then
19:20the entire corner piece on this back section back here now obviously we're gonna have to put it up
19:26there cut out the wheel well for you know for room with my tire but this thing man serious big time
19:32protection serious big time armor and a big step up from the teenager stuff
19:41all right we got these fitted up got the holes drilled in the side there so
19:45this part and the cowl kind of go together because they're going to fit leave the little jeep logo
19:49yeah man and a little scuffing up a little primer we're ready to put on some top coat on these really
19:54want something durable yeah we're going to be scuffing them up we're going to be banging off the rocks but
19:59you know just all those chips and things you really want something a little bit more flexible you want
20:03good adhesion so we're going to use the trim and rocker guard that's going to give you that textured
20:07surface it's going to bite hard and hold on but it's going to be durable right it's going to keep all
20:12the chipping and stuff from happening as you're just cruising down the road flinging rocks and
20:16stuff off of 40s yeah especially when you have the challenge of scraping on a rock boat or getting
20:21off of it you get hold up through that you hold up through anything now in the wheel well here and
20:24on the lower frame we're going to use the dupli-color premium undercoating with sound dampening in it
20:30now we're going to use their high output delivery system so it gets a nice thick coating on it this
20:35is ideal for except for wheel wells gas tanks and frames anywhere you have floor pans and doors quarter
20:41panels and it offers a economical protection from moisture and corrosion resistance and it comes
20:46with a you know a durable rubberized finish
20:56all right a quick minute between dry times we can take a break but it's back to buttoning everything
21:01up and getting ready for that trail yeah man and that means look a lot of upgrades we put it out today
21:05we got body armor on it did the break upgrade this is a big improvement all right got it all dialed in
21:10on some paint but we have to sit over to our friends at truck you because get this matt is
21:15actually coming along with me on the ride and i got to tell you that's going to be interesting because
21:21he scared of everything better bring an extra pair of underwear just in case and three diapers all
21:27right and maybe by the time it's over he'll learn how to use some of that equipment in the fab room
21:31he'll know what got that one mile an hour feels like i hope you guys had some fun with us we had a blast
21:37we'll see you on the next two guys garage or out on the trail
