00:01This is mad.
00:03At a time where young and old have never been further apart...
00:06I'm going the wrong way.
00:08..six young Brits who have never travelled alone before...
00:11It's nothing like Wales.
00:13..are being paired up with six pensioners
00:15who thought they would never travel again.
00:17You're my team-mate!
00:18..to embark on an epic treasure hunt across Japan.
00:21Oh, yes!
00:23Bloody hell, this is going to be hard.
00:25..in a social experiment to challenge assumptions...
00:28..and prove that age is just a number.
00:31She's a bit too old.
00:32I beg your pardon.
00:33..they will need to work together as one.
00:36Colin, you're amazing!
00:38..their journey continued in Kyoto...
00:41A place to call home.
00:42..where they hunted down clues...
00:44What the hell does that mean?
00:46..and took on challenges to win coins.
00:49We did it!
00:50..while some duos have started to bridge the divide...
00:53Show us your best hat, Bob. Oh, yeah.
00:55..others still seem worlds apart.
00:57Don't panic.
00:58I am panicking.
00:59..with one team sent home from Japan.
01:01It hurt a lot more than I thought it was going to.
01:04..the hunt for £50,000 continues
01:06in one of the most poignant cities in the world.
01:15Hiroshima.
01:18The first city in the world to suffer the devastating effects
01:22of an atomic bomb at the end of World War II.
01:26Today, it's regenerated into a thriving, vibrant city,
01:30standing as a testament to the resilience of humanity
01:33and the people of Japan.
01:35So, win Hiroshima.
01:38Mm-hm.
01:39Full of history.
01:41Was you alive when the bombing happened?
01:45I was, just... I wouldn't be quite one.
01:48With five teams left in the competition,
01:50the pair with the lowest total of coins
01:52at the end of this city's challenge
01:54will be sent home from Japan.
01:56We're all in competition.
01:57Entirely so.
01:58And every one of us wants to win.
02:00Oh, the guide went off.
02:02Take the tram to a place for peace.
02:05For peace.
02:06Hmm.
02:07Maybe like a memorial, possibly?
02:08Yes, yeah.
02:09Hmm.
02:10This could be a map up here on the right, possibly.
02:12The first couple to receive their clue are 68-year-old Rosie
02:16and 24-year-old Lawrence.
02:18A bit of information instead.
02:21They've struggled with some of the challenges,
02:23but Lawrence's thirst for knowledge
02:25is beginning to bring the team-mates closer together.
02:28Obviously, you can see here, 80,000 or 90,000 people died
02:31in the initial attack, in the blast,
02:33and then after that, it was hundreds and hundreds of thousands.
02:36So, I'm learning so much from Lawrence.
02:38You get about 30 facts of the day,
02:41and everyone is more interesting than the last one.
02:45Being here has kind of opened my eyes in so many ways,
02:48but also spending it with yourself, too.
02:50Like, I don't know, we've both had very different lives,
02:52but also, at the same time, very similar.
02:54I think this experience, as I said before,
02:57it's helped me with my confidence.
02:59Yes, no, definitely.
03:00Because my confidence was quite low when we came,
03:02and I was thinking,
03:04Oh, I won't be able to do this, and I won't be able to do that.
03:07No, that's it.
03:08And gradually, I've been thinking,
03:10well, I'm keeping up with everybody.
03:14I think Lawrence is an old soul in a young body,
03:17even though there was a big age difference.
03:20I feel like when I tell him things, he really gets me.
03:25Loneliness and confidence are my two biggest issues.
03:29My family, I love them dearly, they love me dearly,
03:31but they're all very, very busy.
03:33Yeah.
03:34So if they say, Oh, sorry, I can't do that,
03:36I'll say, Oh, well, that's fine, that's fine.
03:39But I'd be broken-hearted inside, and I wouldn't show that.
03:42The fact that it's so easy for me to speak to Lawrence
03:46about things that are quite painful for me.
03:49I find quite strange, because I can't speak like that
03:52to lots of people that I've known for years.
03:55But do you know maybe a place for peace, locally?
03:58Peace? Like Peace Park?
04:00Possibly so.
04:01You're going this way.
04:02That's amazing.
04:03Thank you so much.
04:04Thank you for all the information.
04:05Have a nice day.
04:06Thank you so much.
04:07Oh.
04:08Now we've got that information.
04:10That's amazing.
04:13On the other side of the city, 80-year-old Barbara
04:16and 21-year-old Katie have started to transcend their age gap
04:20and are forming an unlikely friendship.
04:24You're looking for the home of a local spirit.
04:28OK.
04:29We're going to end up drinking, aren't we?
04:33What's wrong with that, Katie?
04:36Barbara, she'll care what anyone else thinks.
04:38That is how I want to be when I grow up.
04:42Are you good at holding up after a few?
04:45I'm not.
04:46I'm not as good as you.
04:47I promise you, I'll have one and that's it.
04:51Oh, right.
04:52Embarrassing me so.
04:53No carrying you home then, Katie.
04:55We did click instantly.
04:58And both of us knew it, you know, from the beginning.
05:02I'm so lucky to have someone with me like her.
05:07Oh!
05:09Oh, yes!
05:11After following their clue, the duo have tracked down a traditional sake brewery.
05:17Sake's the spirit then.
05:19You're a spirit drinker today.
05:20Yep.
05:21Seems like it.
05:23In a brewing masterclass, they'll be taught everything there is to know about sake.
05:28The Japanese tipple made by fermenting rice.
05:32Anything suits you, Katie.
05:34Seriously.
05:35One.
05:36Two.
05:37Three.
05:38Yeah!
05:43Barbara and Katie will need to pay attention to everything they hear.
05:47And not get carried away by the taste, as they'll be tested on their newfound sake knowledge later.
05:52So, when we drink, we say kanpai.
05:55Kanpai.
05:56Kanpai.
05:57Kanpai.
05:58Kanpai.
06:00Oh, Jesus Christ.
06:02Oh, it's nice.
06:03I like it.
06:04In fact, I'll have another this week.
06:07That's dangerous.
06:08Yeah, it's alcohol content is about 15.
06:12I'm going to be blooded.
06:13Oh, my goodness.
06:14The younger generation, they're so different.
06:17What was it we say?
06:18Kanpai.
06:19Kanpai.
06:20Kanpai.
06:22We're innocent.
06:24We were, honestly.
06:26We don't put sake by ourselves.
06:29Some people will pour it.
06:32Kanpai.
06:33We want to make happiness and joy through sake.
06:36Well, we're getting happier by the drink.
06:39Kanpai.
06:40I wish I was more like her, in a way.
06:43What age do people start drinking this?
06:4520, in Japan.
06:47She's got no filters.
06:48No.
06:50Karako?
06:51Kanpai.
06:52Kanpai.
06:53Kanpai.
06:54That just adds to her charm.
06:59Have you got any ideas what you want to do in your future?
07:03I did want to be a social worker, cos...
07:06I just needed that one social worker to come into my life.
07:09And change it for the better.
07:11And I want to be that person for other children.
07:14You tick a lot of boxes, believe you me, Katie.
07:18I had such a bad family life, so I ended up homeless God knows how many times.
07:23And then I ended up dropping out of school.
07:27So I've got three GCSEs, maybe.
07:30But I'm sure you've learned a lot from this trip alone.
07:35The sights we've seen, the culture we've seen.
07:40That's like education, isn't it?
07:42Barbara is so full of love.
07:44Probably are telling me every ten minutes, like, look, you're stunning.
07:48You tick every box.
07:49You need to do this.
07:51And you need to do that.
07:52I think just having so much positivity around me has definitely done me some good.
07:57Live your dreams.
07:59Either that, or go into head and shoulders modelling, because you are a beauty.
08:05You are?
08:06I love you, Barbara.
08:07A beauty.
08:08You are a real love.
08:09If I didn't win it, I would feel that I'd let Katie down.
08:14To her, it's a massive amount of money.
08:18It's a lot of money to me.
08:20But her needs are greater than mine.
08:23And I want to win badly.
08:26For her, because she's a bright kid.
08:28Really bright.
08:34Having deciphered their clue...
08:36Atomic bomb dome.
08:38I think this must be our stop.
08:40Lawrence and Rosie are heading towards one of the most poignant landmarks in the city.
08:46Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park.
08:48Atomic dome site?
08:49Yes.
08:50Wow, it must be this here.
08:51I'm guessing.
08:55At its centre, the Children's Peace Monument honours the thousands of young people who were victims of the atomic bombing.
09:05It's surrounded by millions of origami paper cranes.
09:08Paying tribute to Sadako Sasaki.
09:11A 12-year-old girl who died from leukaemia caused by the radiation.
09:15In Japan, it is said, if you make 1,000 paper cranes, your wish will be true.
09:23So she folded more than 1,000 paper cranes.
09:27And shocked by her death, her classmate started a campaign to build this kind of monument.
09:35It's very touching.
09:38It makes you think, doesn't it?
09:40We receive more than 10 million paper cranes every year.
09:43More than 10 million paper cranes.
09:44Every year.
09:45They're beautiful.
09:46They're very beautiful.
09:47Yes.
09:48I've never really had a point in my life where I thought if I could make a wish and hope for it to come true,
09:54because the only thing I would wish for is to have my husband back and that's impossible.
09:59Having learnt about the significance of origami cranes at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park...
10:05Over there I see a pin.
10:07Oh, yes.
10:08The entrance would be here then, I guess.
10:09The pair are about to get a masterclass in the art of making them.
10:14Origami master.
10:16Ah, yes.
10:17This crane will be 22 steps.
10:20They'll need to observe the numerous folds of paper needed to make each crane.
10:25Yeah, honestly, Ruth, I've never seen you so quite.
10:28I'm concentrating.
10:29As they will be tested on it for their next challenge.
10:34These cards are the number of steps for the animals.
10:37That's right.
10:38For the animals.
10:39Yes.
10:40This mammoth is 124 steps.
10:43This is one piece of paper?
10:44Ah, yes.
10:45All of them are for one piece.
10:47Wow.
10:48It's so beautiful, but very, very difficult.
10:55Based on their newfound knowledge, the duo will need to work out how many folds of paper were used to create each of the different models.
11:04166, 55, this side.
11:07We've got 201, 328, 22.
11:14Every correct answer will win them a coin and better their chance of remaining in the competition.
11:2022 is the crane, isn't it?
11:22The highest number is going to be the beautiful dragon.
11:27Compenguin 55.
11:30It's quite small.
11:32And this has got loads of little creases, doesn't it?
11:36The game is that we'll all be eliminated one by one until we have the ultimate winner.
11:41Four is not enough, we need five.
11:43We've got 201 and 166.
11:47This is serious now.
11:48Across the water, the next stage of Barbara and Katie's day-drinking treasure hunt is awaiting them, on the sacred island of Miyajima.
11:59It's renowned for its freely roaming deer, who are considered as wild animals and cared for by local volunteers.
12:06Barbara, what have we got ourselves into?
12:11We shall some find out.
12:13I love this place.
12:16If it is that I don't get through the next round, they can never take off what I've experienced here and the wonderful time we've had.
12:28Oh, look at that.
12:31Oh, lovely.
12:33To keep Katie in the competition, Barbara will have to face even more booze.
12:39Oh!
12:41As the duo have tracked down their challenge location at a local liquor shop.
12:45Good idea you are!
12:46To win coins, they'll need to try and remember everything they were taught earlier at the brewery, as they'll be tested on their newfound sake knowledge.
12:58Oh!
13:00Can you identify which of the sake statements are true or false?
13:06Me and Barbara have got a lot more to learn about each other, haven't they?
13:08Yes.
13:09And lots more adventures, like, if we went home to Maru, we won't have no adventures like this today.
13:13The word for cheers in Japan is...
13:18..kampai!
13:20The duo will need to decide if the statements are true or false by taking a sip from the glasses in front of them.
13:26It's true!
13:30If they taste sake, they've chosen correctly and will win a coin.
13:34High five!
13:36The legal age for drinking alcohol is 20 years old.
13:39In Japan is 20 years old.
13:41True.
13:42Kampai!
13:43Kampai!
13:46Oh!
13:47Come on, darling, you're doing well.
13:50Sarky should be consumed at room temperature.
13:54Katie, I'm not sure.
13:56I think false.
13:58Saying that some people have it warm.
14:00Mmm, mmm, mmm.
14:02You think that's false, then?
14:04I think it's false. What are you feeling?
14:07Not sure.
14:09I just want to do well for Katie's sake, really.
14:15Because that amount of money would change her life.
14:19What are you feeling?
14:21I honestly can't remember what she said.
14:25She's got a good future if she's directed on the right path, in my opinion.
14:31If I let her down, I'd feel really sad.
14:34In the historic city of Hiroshima, five intergenerational teams are on a treasure hunt with a difference.
14:53Have you ever done, like, a TikTok before?
14:56No, I've never done a TikTok.
14:58You've got to keep looking around at everything.
15:01With £50,000 at stake, the outcome of Barbara and Katie's sake challenge...
15:06High five.
15:07..and Rosie and Laurence's origami task is crucial to their fate.
15:12I'm not sure that this one would be 201 steps.
15:17The duo are still deciding how many folds of paper are needed to make each origami animal.
15:23This one is more intricate.
15:25It is, isn't it?
15:26They've already placed the penguin with 55 folds, the dragon with 328, and the crane with 22.
15:35And this is kind of almost, not simple, but a bit simpler within the twists and turns.
15:40Now they must decide whether the ram or the spider has more folds.
15:45Shall we get one each and both lock them in at the same time?
15:47Yeah.
15:50I've got butterflies!
15:52Literally origami butterflies all up inside.
15:54If we do go home, I would be sad for myself, obviously.
15:59But I would be devastated for Laurence because he has so much more to give.
16:08This line is correct.
16:14This line.
16:16Correct.
16:20Okay, of course.
16:21Correct.
16:22Um, this line is wrong.
16:27Wrong.
16:29The other way round.
16:33Wrong.
16:35Okay.
16:36So we've got three out of five.
16:37Yeah, yeah.
16:38Okay.
16:40Obviously we would have liked four or five.
16:43We're kind of in a firing line, you know?
16:44Absolutely we did.
16:45We just have to pray and hope that the other teams will do a lot worse than we did.
16:50All we can do is hope, you know?
16:53Back on Miyajima Island, despite a strong start, Barbara and Katie are still struggling to answer their third question.
17:02I'm so sorry if this is wrong.
17:04Oh, you mustn't be.
17:05You mustn't be.
17:06Locking in false.
17:07For every true or false statement they answer correctly, they will win another coin.
17:13And another shot of sake.
17:15High five!
17:16You should not pour your own sake.
17:23That's true.
17:24Are we locking it in?
17:25Yep.
17:26Kanpai.
17:27Kanpai.
17:28I've learned a lot about sake.
17:37Last one.
17:39But there's a lot to remember.
17:41There's a risk that we'll forget what we learned at the other part.
17:47A master steak brewer is called a toja.
17:50I think that's true.
17:52You're feeling true?
17:53I am.
17:54Yes, I am, but I don't want to influence you in any way.
17:57No.
17:58I am happy with true.
18:01Goodbye.
18:02Goodbye.
18:05We've got five.
18:06We've got five.
18:10We'll make some more water.
18:11I don't know about that, I need some more sake.
18:15Keep the water to yourself.
18:18Winning with Barbara, it'd be so amazing.
18:21I honestly wouldn't want to go into this with anyone else but Barbara.
18:25See you!
18:30I can't believe it that we've got another five.
18:32Now we're on a roll.
18:34How are you feeling?
18:35Jubilant!
18:37I've got a little something.
18:39Whoa, what is this?
18:41I feel like me and Barbara definitely, like, connected from the first moment.
18:44I couldn't even possibly imagine being any close to her.
18:49Oh, he wants you present.
18:51Being in Hiroshima with Katie is a bonus.
18:56Oh, it's all I've ever wanted!
19:00It was an absolute delight to see her getting the pleasure out of it that she has, honestly.
19:09He was trying to eat you!
19:12Oh, my lord!
19:14She's just like my nan now, so she knows everything.
19:17I can't get much more than that.
19:19Look at me!
19:21Oh, you'll be all over the village!
19:22Back on the mainland, two more teams are about to embark on their treasure hunt across Hiroshima.
19:31Today, let's set a target of five.
19:35One couple whose newly formed bond has seen them thrive in the competition so far are 73-year-old Colin and 25-year-old Charlotte.
19:44Do you think we can get five?
19:46I think we need to get five, the way the competition's going.
19:48When I first met Colin, I was thinking, oh, no, he's going to struggle with the long days and the challenges,
19:55and I'm going to have to, like, pull him along a little bit, but it's the opposite.
19:59Oh!
20:00It's time to put your sea legs to the test, take a trip to Cure, is it?
20:06Cure.
20:07But don't miss the boat.
20:10Don't miss the boat, no.
20:11Are we going on a boat?
20:12I've never been on a boat before, have you?
20:14I've been on a boat, yeah.
20:15Have you?
20:16Yeah, I like going on boats.
20:17Oh, you'll enjoy us, then, if we miss the boat.
20:19Yes, the boat.
20:20I think me and Colin are one of the most positive teams.
20:23Even if we're failing, then we just make a joke out of it, and it lightens the mood.
20:28So, I think that's going to take us far.
20:30Cure?
20:31I'm sorry, I...
20:32That's OK.
20:33Well, thank you so much.
20:34OK.
20:35Sorry.
20:37Have a nice day.
20:38Right.
20:39If they don't know, then we're done for.
20:44Two miles away, another intergenerational duo are also hunting down their challenge location.
20:50Head to Shintaki.
20:52Follow the hungry crowds.
20:5571-year-old Val and her junior teammate, 18-year-old Aaron.
21:01Oh, mind yourself, chick.
21:03Chick!
21:04Quite a lot of old people I've met in the past are just grumpy people or Karens.
21:12Konnichiwa.
21:13But being here with Val, that has changed my opinion on them.
21:17You don't have to stop in your 40s, 50s. You can still carry on and do a lot.
21:22Following their clue, the couple are searching for their next challenge in a bustling food market.
21:27I can see a maki's right there.
21:28No!
21:29I can see a maki's right there.
21:30But Aaron's distracted by an offering for lunch.
21:32And so far in Japan, he's eaten McDonald's up to three times a day.
21:37Let's try something else.
21:38Let's go see what we can find.
21:39Would you be up for that?
21:40No.
21:41Come on.
21:42No.
21:43That's chicken.
21:44Fried fish.
21:45Look here.
21:46Let's go in here.
21:47Oh, come on.
21:48Ow!
21:49Oh, my God.
21:50My mission for today is to try and get Aaron to have some Japanese food.
21:54No, I have.
21:55Just four of them.
21:56Yeah.
21:57I'm a bit hungry.
21:58Oh, can you actually add two hash browns?
22:00You didn't get given much money in the care system.
22:02£40 a week, £40, £50.
22:05So that had to go on food and if you needed, like, clothes or socks or boxes, like, once
22:10you used all your food up, you wouldn't get any more money.
22:13So we asked you to get the cheaper stuff.
22:15What's this?
22:16Sausage and egg.
22:17Mmm.
22:18Mmm.
22:19So if you don't mind me asking, how did you happen to end up in care?
22:24I was drinking, then going home, shouting at my mum, kicking doors, getting arrested,
22:31because I feel like she lied to me because of my dad.
22:34All right.
22:35Obviously, I found out my dad weren't my real dad.
22:37Do you think that's what made you start to drink then?
22:40I was just angry.
22:41Angry towards your mum?
22:42Angry.
22:47Growing up, it was all right at the start.
22:52I had a mum and my dad.
22:55But then, say, about six years ago, I think, I found out he weren't my real dad.
23:02You don't want to hear that at a young age, like, he's not your dad.
23:07And obviously, we had a good relationship and then we just stopped speaking
23:15because I told him I think I was looking for my real dad.
23:18So that didn't help too.
23:20See, I had that father figure for a bit and it just went.
23:25I was crying a lot.
23:26Oh.
23:27Crying all the time.
23:28And then when I was drinking, it all just came out and all the violence and anger
23:33and just all came out then.
23:35What was it? It was a shock.
23:37Yeah.
23:38If you'd grown up all the time thinking, you know, your dad, you were a part of this family.
23:43Yeah.
23:44I was just arguing and smashing my room up multiple times.
23:49I got arrested and went to cells.
23:52From there, I was in care and I knew I weren't going home again.
23:55Oh, Aaron, I'm really sorry to hear that.
24:00You've kind of had big stuff, traumatic stuff happen all together at such a young age.
24:06Yeah.
24:07Yeah.
24:08I just thought about him and I thought, Val, you want to win this because you want to be able to take your family for a reunion in Jamaica.
24:18But actually, Aaron needs to win this.
24:20He needs to win it so that he can start to build his life and feel at home wherever he is.
24:2620 miles away, Colin and Charlotte have hunted down their challenge location in the line fishing port of Kure.
24:36Smells like the sea, doesn't it?
24:38Yes.
24:39Where the learning for their next task will take place out on the water.
24:43What did it say?
24:45Don't miss the boat.
24:46Don't miss the boat.
24:47There's boats everywhere.
24:48Oh, there's our pin.
24:50Having relied on Colin's experience to get them this far in the competition.
24:54Hello. Konnichiwa.
24:56Charlotte's seizing the opportunity to take the lead in their fishing challenge.
25:01I love the bite.
25:02Like when I catch a salmon, they just go under everything.
25:05And then you pull them in and it's like, is it still on, is it not?
25:08I love to go fishing on the weekends with my father.
25:11Fishing is like my favourite hobby ever.
25:13I just sit there, eat the snacks and reel it in.
25:16I love that part.
25:17Out of the two of us, you're an expert because I don't know anything at all.
25:21So I'll be learning from you today.
25:23I love fishing.
25:28You did that with your dad all the time?
25:30I do that with my father, yeah.
25:31Are you close to your family?
25:33Yeah, we're really, really close.
25:35We all trip in and kind of do the cleaning and ironing and things.
25:38Although I'm the main one that does the ironing.
25:40The boys just leave the pile for me.
25:42So if we did win, what would you do with the money?
25:47Well, first of all, I'd sort my mother out.
25:50I'd get her an electric wheelchair so she has her own independence.
25:54But try and do something like that.
25:56Try and better their lives and make it easier.
25:58A lot of my money is to take care of my parents because they don't work, they're disabled.
26:04So I want to do everything I possibly can for them.
26:07Why would I spend all that money on myself when I could help all of my family?
26:12Do you know what I mean?
26:13It comes across how much you love your family and you put them first.
26:18Yeah.
26:19She's made sacrifices to help her parents.
26:23And for a young girl to do that, I think it's absolutely amazing.
26:29She's something special, that girl. She really is.
26:33The waters around Hiroshima are home to hundreds of fish species.
26:37Have we got a shark?
26:39So the duo will need to remember as much as they can in order to succeed in their challenge.
26:47Red sea bream.
26:50I love fishing, but I can't touch the fish.
26:54And how?
26:55I touch the rod. I don't go near the fish though.
26:57And I net the fish.
26:58So when it comes in and then I pass it straight to my father.
27:01It stinks.
27:02And this is a young yellowtail.
27:05Once you touch the fish, you're like humming. It's disgusting.
27:11It's flounder.
27:12The flounder has teeth.
27:15Okay.
27:17This one is called rockfish.
27:20Rockfish, yeah.
27:21Rockfish.
27:23Pull it back.
27:24This one is a flat fish.
27:25Just a flat fish.
27:26Yeah, flat fish.
27:27Oh, my God.
27:29Oh, my God.
27:32We're looking for...
27:33Shinteki.
27:34Shinteki.
27:35Shinteki.
27:36Back in the city centre...
27:37Well, there's Shinteki.
27:38After a pit stop for lunch, Val and Aaron have finally tracked down the location for their next challenge.
27:44Look what I can see.
27:46A street food market which specialises in a local delicacy.
27:50We'd better not be eating.
27:51Okonomiyaki are savoury pancakes stuffed with various ingredients ranging from meat to seafood.
27:59Aaron's worst nightmare.
28:02It's no McDonald's, is it?
28:04Yeah.
28:05I think it's a lot healthier than McDonald's, though.
28:07I'll tell you what they put in it as well.
28:08What?
28:09Squid.
28:10No.
28:11No.
28:13The food in Japan.
28:16Well, it's a bit interesting, you know, because I've not really experienced it.
28:22For their challenge, the pair will need to taste five different okonomiyaki dishes, each with a hidden mystery ingredient.
28:30Based on their experience of Japanese cuisine, they've just got to identify what's been added to win a coin.
28:37I'm not excited to try a new food because I don't like seafood and half of the food is...seafood.
28:42There's a lot of seafood.
28:43Yeah.
28:44I'm just going to have to bite my tongue and eat it.
28:46Oh, look at the legs.
28:47Tastes it.
28:50You don't like it?
28:52Is that a prawn?
28:53It tastes like a prawn.
28:55Should we go for it?
28:56Yeah.
28:57It's done.
28:58Prawn.
28:59The answer is...prawns.
29:01Yeah!
29:02Prawns.
29:03I'm not really a seafood person, but I'm never back down from a challenge.
29:07Like, I always try and push myself.
29:12What the bloody hell is that?
29:14I want to win.
29:15That's why we're here.
29:17Oh, no.
29:18Is that octopus?
29:19Yes.
29:22We think, we hope it's Saatchi.
29:24Is it Saatchi did they say?
29:26The answer is...
29:28Kimuchi.
29:30Good!
29:31Aaron gave it 100%.
29:32Bless him.
29:33But, yeah, he was trying them with a funny face.
29:35Boo!
29:36Is this...
29:37Is this me?
29:38Boo!
29:39Is this Aaron?
29:40I'm not putting that in my mouth.
29:41After their morning's fishing lesson, Colin and Charlotte are about to be tested on the
29:49different types of fish caught in Hiroshima's waters.
29:52Oh, gosh.
29:53It's the names of the fish.
29:55The pair will need to combine their memories to try and recall which out of the ten fish
30:00are sea bream, yellowtail, flatfish, black rockfish and flounder.
30:07Oh, my God, it's a rank.
30:09Each fish they correctly identify will win them a coin and better their chance of staying
30:14in the competition.
30:17What the hell is that?
30:18It looks like a chicken.
30:20Shall we do the yellowtail first?
30:21Because I think we'll know that one.
30:23Do you want to do the honours?
30:24That's the yellowtail, isn't it?
30:28Well, that's the yellowtail, isn't it?
30:30Oh, we're so dumb.
30:31That one.
30:32Yeah.
30:33I feel Colin took the rope on this one and I kind of, like, sat back and watched.
30:38Well, I put the yellowtail little sticker on the wrong one and he's like,
30:41no, Charlotte, it's the one with the yellowtail.
30:43So, since then, I was like, Colin, just take the lead.
30:46That's the rockfish.
30:50OK, well, we know the biggest one is the flounder.
30:52Wait a minute.
30:53No, that's not the flounder.
30:54It's not the flounder.
30:55Because the flounder got teeth.
30:57Oh, well done.
30:58There's the teeth.
30:59That's the flounder.
31:00His eyes are so disgusting.
31:03Colin smashed it.
31:04He's so amazing.
31:05His mind is, like, crazy.
31:06I've never met anyone, like, in my entire life.
31:09That's a flatfish.
31:13So, I think it was a sea bream, wasn't it?
31:14I think you're right.
31:15I think that's a sea bream.
31:16I think that's right.
31:19Having made their final choices...
31:22Fingers crossed.
31:23Yes.
31:25Yes.
31:26The team are about to discover how many fish they've been able to recall.
31:31Yes.
31:32Yes.
31:33Yay!
31:34Yes.
31:35Yay!
31:36Oh, full house.
31:39Five.
31:40Full house.
31:41You can't do better than that.
31:42No, you can't.
31:43This is tremendous.
31:44We've got five coins, and we've never gone past three before.
31:47Thank you very much.
31:48Thank you very much.
31:49We just hope, like, nobody's drawn, like, all of us draw.
31:52Because that would be our luck.
31:53In the renowned city of Hiroshima, the final duo to hunt down their clue are 73-year-old karaoke host, Julie, and her junior teammate, 19-year-old Tende.
32:14Head to Nakamachi, and get into the groove.
32:15The groove.
32:16Yay!
32:17I think Tende is quite a reserved chap.
32:18So I would just love to see him do something where he just puts himself out there, and to see him come out of his little shell a little bit.
32:32Uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh.
32:33Oh, oh, groove.
32:34Shall we go and have a look?
32:35Yeah.
32:36Having tracked down their clue to a local record shop, the duo must hunt through the vinyl for their next set of instructions.
32:45This is so cool.
32:47While searching, they'll need to keep an eye on the record labels, as they'll be tested on music that's related to Japan later in their challenge.
32:57Do you remember, like, the first, like, piece of music that you bought?
33:01I remember the first, well, then it was a little seven-inch, and I would play on my dad's grammar phone.
33:08You know, for me, like, the first was a little, like, iPod touch from my dad.
33:13And I remember he, like, downloaded a bunch of, like, Bob Marley and a lot of blues music.
33:19So I think music was kind of the first time I really felt a sense of community, in a way.
33:26Because, for me, it was the first time I saw people that looked similar to me.
33:31I was represented through music, like, through, like, music videos.
33:34I was at an orphanage in Uganda when my parents decided to adopt me at six months old.
33:41Growing up in such a big family and being the youngest and living in, like, such a small village in a very white environment where there was no one that looked like me, like, that was very challenging.
33:54I remember, like, holding my mum's hand and, like, looking at it and being like, oh, like, why is your hand a different colour to mine?
34:02When I look at my family, I see them as my family, like, I just see my mum as my mum.
34:07But then when we'd walk in the street or, like, go somewhere like Tesco's and then people would, like, stare or look and be like, who is this child to my mum?
34:16So one of the biggest challenges, I think, was learning about race and adoption and, like, how I fit in.
34:24Like, who am I away from my family and kind of, like, what is my identity separate from them?
34:30I now sometimes try and make my own music. It's like dealing with adoption.
34:34I found, like, playing piano a really, like, helpful way for me to just concentrate my mind.
34:40You can get lost in it, can't you? Yeah.
34:41And you don't have to think about other things. You're just in the moment.
34:45I'd really like to take Tende further and I want it for him even more than me, really.
34:52Ah! You found it!
34:54Head to Matsubaracho. Find a place where you can sing like nobody is listening.
35:03I'm so happy.
35:07Across the city...
35:09Um...
35:11With a life-changing £50,000 on offer, Aaron is holding his nerve to try and identify the key ingredient hidden in five different Okonomiyaki dishes.
35:21Octopus.
35:22Yeah.
35:24Val and Aaron have so far correctly identified one out of two, but have three more chances to find the hidden octopus, mochi and squid.
35:33The answer is...
35:36Octopus.
35:37Thank you so much.
35:38I don't like seafood, so that bit was pretty shit.
35:47What are we going with?
35:48Well, I don't think it's cheese. I can't think what else...
35:50Mochi.
35:51The answer is...
35:53Mochi.
35:57He doesn't like seafood. Love him.
35:59But yeah, he threw himself into the game. He did.
36:02There it is.
36:03Yeah.
36:04Squid, I think.
36:06Lock in squid.
36:07The answer is...
36:09Squid.
36:11Very good.
36:12Correct.
36:13Very quickly.
36:14Give me up.
36:15Give me up.
36:16Give me up.
36:17Oh.
36:18Tears came to my eyes. I don't know where. It just came out of the blue.
36:28I think it was a tension.
36:29I think it was a tension.
36:30And Aaron had said, we've got to get this right.
36:33It obviously means more to me than I've realised, you know, until this moment.
36:37And I know it means a lot to Aaron as well.
36:40So, you know, we're both invested in this.
36:42Because I want to stay.
36:43And Aaron wants to stay.
36:49Matsubaracho.
36:50Is that like a place?
36:51Who knows?
36:52On the other side of town, Julie and Tende are still searching for their challenge location.
36:57Is there anywhere around here where we could sing?
37:02English?
37:03I don't know.
37:04Julie is apparently karaoke queen, jiving Julie.
37:08It's a busy cross here.
37:09Yeah, I guess school time's ended.
37:11I don't want to jinx it, but I'm hoping that it's something we can both really show our personalities and bring our expertise to.
37:20Oh, wait.
37:22I would not have seen that.
37:24The duo have finally tracked down their clue to a karaoke bar.
37:29There's something about you.
37:31Let's keep it moving.
37:33Invented in Japan in the 70s, karaoke is now performed in over 8,000 venues across the country.
37:40Including Julie and Tende's challenge location.
37:44Being a karaoke host at my age, I think that's probably the biggest surprise.
37:49That makes me feel like this.
37:51I don't know who you are, but you must be.
37:54I do it because I love it so much.
37:56I'm called jiving Julie.
37:58You just made me wanna play.
38:05The team mates will now be tested on their joint knowledge of song titles over the decades.
38:09With the twist that they all have a Japanese theme.
38:15Oh, I know this.
38:17Do you know Harry Styles?
38:19I know Harry Styles.
38:20Music for a sushi restaurant.
38:22Yeah.
38:26Yay!
38:27One down, four to go.
38:36Ooh.
38:37Something of a Samurai by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
38:41I don't really know their music.
38:44I know them, but I don't know the word of this.
38:46In my mind, I don't know why a sword or a Samurai, but that is just...
38:50Do you wanna try a sword?
38:51Because I don't know the answer.
38:53I'll be honest.
38:54I don't know.
38:55Okay.
38:56Well, let's just try a sword.
39:00Dreams.
39:04Oh, my God.
39:05I miss the Tokyo Blank by Manning Street Breachers.
39:12Manning Street Breachers.
39:13Well, I've never heard of...
39:14I've heard of them.
39:15Nothing I've ever listened.
39:16Like, this is more of your...
39:17Don't say it's mine.
39:20At least you've heard of them.
39:21I've heard of them.
39:22But how have you heard of them?
39:24Because they're in my book.
39:25Oh, okay.
39:28I think, initially, when we found out the game, we were really looking forward to it.
39:32The fact that it involved music, especially karaoke, because you're in Japan, that really is, like, her expertise.
39:41I feel like I'm really letting you down.
39:43I feel so sorry.
39:44It's okay.
39:46So, like, do you think that I Miss There is more, like, a person?
39:51Like, I miss the Tokyo boy and Tokyo girl.
39:54Oh.
39:55Right, we'll go with girl then.
39:56Skylight.
39:57I'm hoping that there's some musicians of my era that, like, I actually know.
40:24It's not good.
40:25It's not good.
40:26No.
40:27It's not good.
40:28It's not good.
40:29It's not good.
40:30After a testing treasure hunt across Hiroshima, the team with the lowest coin total will be leaving the competition.
40:37It's not good.
40:38It's not good.
40:39No.
40:40It's not good.
40:41But if you've won only one coin out of three so far, the outcome of Julie and Tende's karaoke challenge will determine their fate.
40:48their fate. I feel like I guessed a lot in the last like two other ones so I'm
40:54like curious like anything that you have to say. So far the duo have been relying
41:01on each other's musical expertise as back in the UK Tende's a keen musician
41:07and Julie's a karaoke host. Is this not Harajuku girl? I'm trying to run through
41:15the bits of the song. Harajuku girl makes the most sense because I feel like yeah
41:21that style is mainly attached to like women is it not? Yeah. Oh it's girls. That's so annoying.
41:30Blank in Japan by Coldplay. Any ideas? No I've never heard of this song.
41:45Surely people in your pub must like saying Coldplay. I don't know the song. I really
41:50don't know the song. I don't know what to say. Tende is getting frustrated because I didn't
41:59know the answer and he felt I should know the answer but it's not like I can learn
42:03every single song that's in my songbook. Considering how many song titles you've
42:08probably right over the years that would be quite helpful I think.
42:14I know there's a song called Lost in Japan but that's by Shawn Mendes. I don't know if
42:23they'd share the same name. There's no reason why they were not going to have two songs the same.
42:28Okay. Lost. Final answer.
42:34Lovers are.
42:43I kind of felt I was being blamed because I didn't know the song. I can only make an educated guess.
42:49If it's not the right answer it's not the right answer.
42:52It's unlikely that another team has only one coin.
42:58Yeah.
43:02I answered the questions which I could answer.
43:06Julie has been calling herself karaoke queen. Everyone has been calling her karaoke queen.
43:10So I think it's obviously a bit shocking the outcome considering karaoke is her job.
43:25Having done everything they can all five teams have been summoned to the grounds of Hiroshima
43:31Castle to find out which intergenerational duo will be leaving Japan.
43:35Mixed emotions. I mean it could go either way from here you know.
43:40Very very sad if it was the end of our adventure.
43:44Unaware of their rivals results Rosie and Lawrence are first to arrive with three coins.
43:50Oh that's enough.
43:51Yeah fingers crossed.
43:53Followed by Colin and Charlotte with a maximum of five.
43:57Oh well done guys.
43:58Oh well done.
43:59Count them out.
44:00Next to show their hand are Julie and Tende.
44:02I'm a bit apprehensive going into the coin count today.
44:05Because we don't know what anybody else has got.
44:14One.
44:16What was your challenge?
44:20With Barbara and Katie scoring another maximum of five.
44:23Well done guys.
44:26Julie and Tende's fate in Japan now all rests on Val and Aaron.
44:35We're relying on you.
44:40For what?
44:41To not pull too much out.
44:44One.
44:45One.
44:48Two.
44:49That's it.
44:51You know us guys.
44:53Four again.
