Transcript
00:00The historical PAC coalition is holding its primary Sunday to choose its next candidates for the May 2026 presidential elections.
00:11Hurricane Malisa, currently in the Central Caribbean Sea, has strengthened and reached Category 4.
00:19And on Sunday, polling stations across Argentina opened their doors to begin election day and vote for new members of the legislative cabinet.
00:30Hello, welcome from the South. I'm with Alberto Matos from De Lesos Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
00:48Colombia's historical PAC coalition is holding its primary Sunday to choose its next candidates for the May 2026 presidential elections.
00:55The polls open at 8 a.m. local time in 13,400 voting centers, of which 3,300 are located in rural areas.
01:04During the exercise, voters will receive three ballots, one to select their presidential candidate between Senator Iván Cepeda and former Health Minister Carolina Corcho,
01:13in order with the names of the coalition's 144 Senate candidates, and the third with the 373 precandidates for the House of Representatives.
01:22Venezuela reaffirmed the success of its fight against drug trafficking during the Bolivarian militia exercises held in Caracas as part of the Independence 200 Coast Defense.
01:37The operation included military deployments in key coastal areas with the aim of strengthening their protection and ensuring national independence.
01:43Venezuelan defense minister Padrino Lopez specified that maneuvers have been carried out on the islands of Patos and Orchila with successful results in the training of units.
01:52He also highlighted the country's achievements and reiterated that Venezuela is free of drug trafficking.
01:58This cost exercise is not only about watching the Caribbean Sea and the military threat, but also about checking all the drug trafficking routes to stop and fight them head on.
02:16Venezuela has definitely been successful in the fight against drug trafficking because it has a state policy about it.
02:24It is difficult when governments or the elites that intend to rule countries associate themselves with the drug trafficking that makes the fight very difficult.
02:37Here in Venezuela, it is much more simple because we are united in our objectives across the nation.
02:44We don't want absolutely anything to do with drug trafficking, nor with its production, nor with its cultivation, nor with its processing, nor with its trafficking, nor with its distribution.
03:04Absolutely nothing. There are no cartels here.
03:07And the Western Extrategic Integral Defense Region of the Bolivar National Armed Forces condemned Leopoldo Lopez called for a U.S. military invasion of Venezuela.
03:16The members of the Bolivarian Armed Forces belonging to the Strategic Region of Integral Defense No. 1 of the Western Region.
03:25In perfect popular military police fusion in these lands, the Bolivarian State of Falcon, where the forefather of American independence
03:37first used our flag of struggle, the Mirandina flag, the same one that crossed the mountains, valleys, and plains, waved by our heroes to bring freedom, independence, and sovereignty to the peoples of America.
03:53From here, we wish to express our most categorical and forceful words of rejection of the statements made by a criminal fugitive from Venezuelan justice.
04:05A cowardly and despicable being belonging to the fascist far right, in which he called for a military attack on our sacred soil, and on citizen Nicolas Maduro, who is the constitutional president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, our commander-in-chief.
04:23The government of Barbados denounced the frequent threats by the United States to peace in the Caribbean region.
04:31At the 86th Annual Conference of the Labor Party of Barbados, Prime Minister Mia Motley denounced the deployment of U.S. warships in the Caribbean Sea and demanded respect for the sovereignty of countries in the region.
04:41She also highlighted the region's historic efforts to establish itself as a zone of peace, which is now directly threatened by foreign military ships.
04:49In turn, she demanded that any dispute be resolved in the U.N. through dialogue rejecting the unilateral imposition of force.
04:59We are now facing a multitude of threats.
05:05We need look no further than threats from ships, U.S. military ships across the Caribbean Sea, including what is reputed to be the largest warship in the world.
05:15These are no longer the days of pirates.
05:18This is 2025, and we have reason to be genuinely concerned, because even as that is happening, one of the most dangerous threats to the 2025 Atlantic season is taking into account our brothers and sisters in the Northern Caribbean, Melissa.
05:34We are facing, my friends, an extremely dangerous and intolerable situation in the Northern Caribbean.
05:41And as a people with a tragic history of being subjected to centuries of great power, orchestrated genocide, terrorism and war.
05:50And as a small state, we have invested enormous time, energy and effort in establishing and maintaining our region as a zone of peace.
06:03For two years since the U.S. military invasion of Grenada, known as Operation Urgent Fury, where at least 70 Grenadians were killed and 358 injured. Let's see more.
06:17After the fall of the Eric Geary regime in 1979, at the hands of the New Jewel Movement, and with Maurice Bishop as Prime Minister, Grenada began profound social reforms, alphabetization, public health and labor improvements.
06:32One of the key projects was the construction of Point Salinas International Airport with Cuban support, aimed at economic development and promoting tourism.
06:41The United States government, led at the time by Ronald Reagan, declared this to be a supposed Soviet-Cuban military threat in the Caribbean.
06:48As a result, the United States maintained a policy of siege and destabilization against the government of Grenada.
06:53In this context, the internal situation became more complicated in 1983, with divisions within the government culminating in a coup led by Vice President Bernard Cord and General Hudson Austin, both allies of the United States.
07:13During the coup, Bishop was arrested and, after massive protests in his support, was executed along with several collaborators on October 19th.
07:20Following the riots, the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States requested United States military intervention, arguing that there was a danger to the stability and safety of United States citizens, most of whom were medical students at SD, Georgia's University.
07:34On October 25th, 1983, the United States launched Operation Urgent Fury, sending nearly 7,600 soldiers to join forces with Jamaica, Barbados, and other countries in the region.
07:53The stated objective was to restore democratic order, protect United States citizens, and overthrow the military government that had emerged after Bishop's death.
08:01However, various sectors denounced that the real objective was to prevent the consolidation of a sovereign government that would promote social and democratic reforms.
08:10The interventionist operation included amphibious landings and airborne assaults, with the capture of Point Salines Airport being key to ensuring logistical control.
08:19Siendo clave la captura del aeropuerto de Point Salines para asegurar el control logĂstico.
08:25The Grenadian resistance was overpowered by the United States military forces.
08:33The invasion resulted in the killing of at least a hundred citizens, and an occupation that installed a pro-United States interim government, and called for elections in 1984, dismantling the sovereign and revolutionary government.
08:46Internationally, the operation was widely condemned as a violation of international law, with the unvoting 108-9, and repudiation of the invasion.
08:55However, it highlighted the persistence of United States interventionism in Latin America and the Caribbean to prevent governments that challenge its hegemony.

09:39Hurricane Melissa, currently in the Central Caribbean Sea, has strengthened and reached Category 4.
09:44Hurricane Melissa is expected to make landfall in Jamaica in the coming hours, while Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Cuba have heightened alerts.
09:51The hurricane currently has sustained winds of 220 kmph, moving slowly west-northwest at just 7 kmph.
09:58According to regional forecasting centers, the slow movement makes the storm more dangerous, as its prolonged presence in the same area brings heavier rains, higher storm surges, and stronger winds.
10:08The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported, when the hurricane was 195 km from Kingston, Jamaica's capital, that the rainfall situation would be catastrophic,
10:17warning also that within less than 24 hours, Melissa could intensify to Category 5.
10:23And on Sunday, polling stations across Argentina opened their doors to begin election day and vote for new members of the legislative cabinet.
10:35Polling stations opened the ballot boxes at 8 in the morning local time throughout the country,
10:41so that more than 35 million Argentinians can elect the 257 members of the Chamber of Deputies and 72 members of the Senate.
10:47According to polls, the Union for the Homeland Coalition is the main opposition force to the ruling Liberty Advances Party.
10:54The first election results are expected to be announced at 9 pm local time in accordance with Argentine election law.
10:59In this context, Argentine President Javier Milay cast his vote in Buenos Aires, while in La Plata District,
11:10Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kisiloff voted alongside his wife at the Florial Ferreira Health School.
11:16Authorities report that the election day moves forward in complete normality and without any incidents.
11:21And youth groups in Peru staged a new demonstration on Saturday demanding the resignation of interim President José Heri
11:32and calling for justice for the death of protesters just a week ago.
11:36The protests by the so-called Generation C began several weeks ago in the Peruvian capital Lima in rejection of the government of the then-President Dina Boluarte,
11:45who was removed from office by Congress amid public outrage over the escalating violence in the Indian nation.
11:52With the appointment of Jerry as interim President, the Senate voted on a series of laws that arbitrarily repressed the right to protest
11:58and weakened the fight against criminal gangs. As part of the repression campaign authorized by the President,
12:04it was reported on October 15, during a march in Lima, the death of the young urban music singer Eduardo Mauricio Ruiz Sanz
12:10from a shot attributed to the Peruvian police forces.
12:19And in the United States, a violent attack on Saturday at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania raises the total number of mass shootings to 353 in just nine months
12:26under President Donald Trump's administration. The shooting occurred around 9 p.m., leaving four people injured so far.
12:32According to the Oxford Police Department, the wounded were taken to the Christian Care Hospital in Delaware.
12:38The Sheffield County District Attorney's Office reported that an investigation has been opened, but so far there are no arrests or suspects.
12:45Meanwhile, Governor Josh Shapiro urged citizens to avoid the area while offering full state support.
12:51According to the Gaunt Valence Archive, more than 21,000 people have been injured in such incidents so far in 2025.

13:36Welcome back.
13:37In Spain, thousands of women took to the streets of Seville to protest against failures in the breast cancer screening system.
13:43The irregularities, which include delays in testing, notified reports, and lack of communication with patients,
13:49have sparked a wave of public outrage and the call for a large march by the Association of Women with Breast Cancer, AMAMA.
13:55According to the organization, numerous medical records have been ultra-replacing terms such as suspicious or inconclusive with probably benign,
14:04which would have prevented many women from receiving the necessary medical follow-up.
14:08In this regard, the regional government of Andalusia recognized that at least 2,317 women in the region have been affected by errors in the follow-up of their mammograms.
14:18And the Europe-made Human Rights Monitor warned that Israel's continued refusal to allow international journalists,
14:45correspondents and forensic teams into Gaza constitutes a systematic policy to erase evidence of genocide.
14:51In a statement released Saturday, the group said Israel enforces this policy through both field and administrative restrictions,
14:57preventing reporters and investigation committees from entering the territory.
15:02EURO-MED argues that by blocking access, Israel aims to impose a complete media blackout concerning the true scale of destruction and civilian suffering.
15:10The organization is urging the United Nations and the international community to ensure immediate independent access for journalists and forensic experts
15:18before critical physical and biological evidence is lost.
15:21And on Sunday, in Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia, the 47th Summit of Heads of States and Government of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations was inaugurated under the theme Inclusion and Sustainability.
15:40More than 30 heads of states and government from member countries and partners such as China, Japan, South Korea, the United States and Canada are attending this event
15:48which will feature bilateral meetings of great global interest.
15:51The opening session was shared by the Prime Minister of Malaysia and current President of the Association, Anwar Ibrahim,
15:58and served to declare East Timor as the 11th member of the group.
16:01From Sunday until October 28, three Asian summits are scheduled, plus one with important partners including representatives from the United Nations.
16:09And in this regard East Timor's Prime Minister pledged that his country would be a productive member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
16:21as it was formally admitted to the bloc in the first expansion since the 1990s.
16:26Sanana Guzmau declared through his official acceptance speech his country's willingness to become an active part of the Brotherhood Organization
16:33and described inclusion in the group as a powerful affirmation of their journey toward legitimacy.
16:38According to experts, East Timor's entry could reverse the negative trends in its gross domestic product, unemployment levels and overall poverty rates,
16:48giving it access to the bloc's free trade deals, investment opportunities and a broader regional market.
16:54Today, history is made.
17:04Timor-Leste has been admitted as the 11th member state of ASEAN.
17:12For the people of Timor-Leste, this is not only a dream realized, but a powerful affirmation of our journey.
17:25Our accession is a testament to the spirit of our people, a young democracy, born from struggle,
17:36now embracing a new era of collaboration and growth within one of the world's most dynamic regions.
