00:11Defeat for Uribism at the legislative elections in Colombia's historic backlit Senate vote.
00:20In Venezuela, communes and communal circuits defined their priority projects in the first national public consultation of 2026.
00:33An Iranian citizen celebrated the designation of Mustafa Khamenei as the Islamic Republic's new supreme leader.
00:46Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from De Leso Studios in Caracas, Venezuela. We begin with
00:52the news.
01:06On Sunday, Colombia held legislative elections which resulted in the defeat of right-wing and European representatives as left-wing
01:13party historic back is currently positioned as the leader in the Senate with 23% of the votes.
01:18Precisely, former President Alba Uribe was unable to obtain a seat in the Opera House for the Democratic Central Party,
01:24which won 16% of the votes.
01:26This political party placed Uribe last on a closed list, which leaves him out of a distribution of seats that,
01:31according to projections, would only give his political formation 20 representatives in the Opera House.
01:37In addition, the representative of the hegemonic media, Vicky DĂĄvila, who had aspired to be the presidential candidate of Uribism,
01:44received less than 5% of the votes after leaving a campaign criticized for disrespecting the symbols of indigenous peoples
01:50and spreading fake news about the left.
02:00And in this context, after the historic pact lit the polls with over 4,400,000 votes, the party's presidential
02:06candidate, IvĂĄn Cepeda, assured the organization has managed to become the main force in the Senate.
02:12What we have felt in the country, what we have experienced, have been confirmed today at the polls, at the
02:18bottom tables.
02:20We are the main political force in Colombia, the most influential, the one with the largest number of seats in
02:27the Senate and the House of Representatives today.
02:30The victory does not belong to us, it belongs to the Colombian people who decided to trust in the path
02:37of political and social change.
02:45For her part, historic pact, Senator-elect Carolina Corcho announced that the party will seek a broad coalition with her
02:52progressive forces aimed at organizing a legislative agenda to continue social reforms.
02:58We are very satisfied, very happy. At this moment, we have the largest number of senators in the history of
03:03Colombian politics, which will be put at the service of the people, at the service of social reforms.
03:10And what is needed now is to build a broad coalition that goes beyond historic pacts, with progressive political forces
03:17to organize a legislative agenda that continues with social reform.
03:23In this regard, Colombian President Gustavo Petro took to his ex-account to address the outcome of the legislative elections,
03:30stating,
03:30Based solely on preliminary counts and pending final results, it is clear that the historic pact won a landslide victory
03:36in the congressional elections.
03:37However, it does not have an absolute majority, so the idea of a grand alliance for life and prosperity must
03:43be maintained.
03:44In addition, the president assured that to avoid a repeat of what happened with the National Popular Alliance,
03:49new congressmen and congresswoman must study and a school of new politics for Colombia must be created,
03:54adding that in the next session of the current Congress, bills for social reforms will be presented, with health reforms
04:00being a priority.
04:18Also during Sunday's inter-party consultations, Colombia selected the presidential candidates for next May's election.
04:23For the great consultation for Colombia, far-right Senator Paloma Valencia was elected,
04:28while the former mayor of BogotĂĄ, Claudia LĂłpez, was elected as the unified candidate of the right in the consultation
04:33for solutions.
04:34The last presidential candidate, former Senator Roy Barreras, was nominated in the consultation for life,
04:40which brings together some representatives from progressive sectors.
04:43Let's remember that Colombian electoral authorities previously prevented the historic pact from taking part in this consultation.
04:48The candidates will join historic pact's candidate, Ivan Cepeda, in the first run of the presidential election.
04:54Cepeda, according to several surveys, is widely leading voting tension ahead of May's polls.
05:08In this political scenario, let's learn more about the newly elected presidential candidates.
05:12Paloma Valencia, the presidential candidate for the Democratic Center Party, is an heir to the most orthodox Eurobism ideology
05:19and the conservative lineage of her grandfather, former President Guillermo Leon Valencia,
05:24a lawyer from the University of Los Andes and a loyal defender of Álvaro Uribe, whom she proposed as her
05:29vice president.
05:30Valencia's career has been marked by her key role in the no campaign against the 2016 peace agreement and by
05:36segregationist proposals.
05:38Her government platform depends on the right-wing agenda by proposing the elimination of the wealth tax,
05:43tax reductions for large corporations and the defense of fracking, despite environmental warnings.
05:49In social policy, she proposes a private individual savings pension system starting at birth,
05:54allowing the pension to be exchanged for a home, an initiative that, her critics point out,
05:59directly benefits private funds to the detriment of public social protection.
06:06For her part, the unified candidate of the right, Claudia Lopez,
06:10holds a PhD in political science from Northwestern University and is a former mayor of Bogota.
06:14Lopez built her reputation by exposing the parapolitic scandal,
06:19but her tenure as mayor of Bogota left a bigger legacy in terms of security and was tainted by controversies,
06:24such as being caught violating her own quarantine restrictions and generating repudiation for xenophobic statements against Venezuela migrants.
06:32Presenting herself as a centrist alternative, Lopez was reminded by the left of her support for President Petro in 2018
06:38and 2022,
06:39whose constituent assembly she now opposes.
06:42Her internationalist discourse has been criticized as her abandoning progressive banners to embrace the very establishment she once denounced.
06:55On the other hand, Roy Barreras, former senator elected for the Front for Life consultation,
07:00is a medical doctor and politician.
07:03It's political adaptability that raises questions moving from the Radical Change Party to the Union Party for the People,
07:09in which he preferably defended Alvaro Uribe, then supported Juan Manuel Santos and the peace negotiations with the FARC.
07:14In his agenda, Barreras proposes continuing hydrocarbon exploitation while moving toward a supposed gradual transition to renewables,
07:22a position that environmentalists consider insufficient in the face of the climate crisis.
07:27In terms of security, his emphasis on order and authority is dangerous close to the rhetoric of the FARC,
07:32which has caused concern among those who expected a stronger stance on human rights.
07:46We're going to have a first break. We're going to be right back.
08:09Welcome back. Venezuela held the first public consultation of 2026 with the mobilizations of communes and communal circuits.
08:16This event was notable for the territorial organization of the grassroots,
08:19aimed at designing on priority projects for the local development of the country.
08:22From the early hours of Sunday morning, Venezuelans flocked to polling stations
08:25to vote on thousands of projects proposed by the communities.
08:29Of the more than 36,000 projects, 67 focused on economic transformation and the optimization of public services,
08:34while 43% seek to strengthen local businesses and production chains.
08:38National public consultations seek national development through a communal state framed by democratic and protagonistic participation.
08:59And Venezuela's acting president, JosĂŠ RodrĂguez, highlighted a high turnout in the first public consultation of 2026,
09:04and congratulating the National Electoral Council and the Republic for their management during the election day.
09:14Well, on this special Sunday, International Women's Day, I want to congratulate Venezuela.
09:19We have had historic participation in the consultation.
09:22In the first popular consultation of 2026, where Venezuelans, men and women, went to select the projects of their choice
09:30for the human city and the productive economy.
09:33And we broke the record for participation.
09:37I congratulate every Venezuelan who participate.
09:39I also want to congratulate the National Electoral Council for expanding the voting centers and the voting infrastructure.
09:48I want to congratulate the Republic plan.
09:51I believe deeply in this Venezuela.
09:53It is a Venezuela that's rediscovering itself in the community.
