00:00The Yankees, they made their first move of the trade deadline season, sending two prospects in return for Rockies third baseman, Ryan McMahon.
00:07And joining us now to break down the trade is the Yankees beat reporter with us for the New York Post.
00:13His name is Greg Joyce. You see him right there. Greg, what's going on?
00:16How you doing, Dexter?
00:17I'm doing good, man. I'm doing good.
00:18Well, trade season's always been here, but officially started for you here with this deal going down today.
00:24And Greg, break down this deal for us.
00:26Why Ryan McMahon?
00:27I know the Yankees needed a third baseman. This was the area they were looking for.
00:32But why Ryan McMahon here?
00:34Yeah, I think it, first of all, just kind of solidifies that spot.
00:37It's kind of been a little bit of a black hole for them this season.
00:41Obviously, you know, the last few weeks since Jackson Jr. moved back to second base,
00:46they've just been going with a combination of Oswald Peraza and Yorvi Vivas,
00:49who, you know, have really struggled offensively and aren't, you know,
00:54Peraza has been a top defender, but just haven't gotten the production they need at that spot.
00:59So, obviously, the top third baseman on the market was Eugenio Suarez from the Diamondbacks,
01:06but he's a rental and he's also the top bat that's probably going to move.
01:10So, he's, you know, there's a lot of teams in on him.
01:12And I think the bidding is going to get pretty, you know, hot, heavy, I would expect.
01:17So, especially, you know, at a time when the Yankees' bigger priority seems to be pitching,
01:21especially bullpen arms, you know, they kind of went for McMahon here,
01:26who I heard, you know, was one of their top backup options if they didn't like the potential deal for Suarez.
01:32So, they kind of strike early, a little bit early here, six days to the deadline.
01:36You know, it's a guy who has two years left on his deal after the season.
01:42He's been a strong defender.
01:44I think that's kind of the, you know, most, you know, biggest thing right now.
01:48It just solidifies that position that's been a, you know, a big goal for them this season.
01:53I talked to a scout earlier this week who thinks that, you know,
01:56his offense could kind of flourish at Yankee Stadium with the short porch
02:00and also just playing in meaningful games.
02:02That's something he hasn't done a ton of, obviously, with the Rockies,
02:06who have pretty much, you know, mostly struggled during his tenure there.
02:09And, you know, you never know what to make of hitters when they leave Coors Field.
02:14His road splits haven't been great.
02:16But, you know, we'll see.
02:18He doesn't have to be, you know, in that lineup, he was, you know,
02:21they were banking on him to be one of the big guys.
02:23And in this lineup, he won't have to be that, you know,
02:26they just needed to play a solid third base.
02:28And whatever they get from him offensively, I think, is a bonus.
02:31But, yeah, so obviously some bigger needs for the Yankees to check off here
02:35in the next coming days with pitching.
02:37But they filled a big one early on with McMahon at third base.
02:41Now they filled it with McMahon at third base.
02:43We know he's got a good glove, gold glove caliber third baseman.
02:46We'll see how he can flourish in this lineup.
02:48But some more protection around him there, Greg.
02:51Now, look, the Yankees have hit up two top 25 prospects in their organization,
02:55pitchers Griffin Herring and Josh Groves.
02:58Was this an overpay by the Yankees in terms of giving up two top 25 pitching prospects here?
03:05I think it's an area of depth that they were dealing from.
03:08You know, they have a number of arms at the lower levels of, you know, high A,
03:12some that have since been promoted to double A that are pretty intriguing to a lot of teams.
03:17So, you know, I think it was going to – I don't think it's as much as Suarez would have cost them,
03:23even though Suarez is only a rental.
03:24But I think, you know, we'll see.
03:27It seems like in a lot of these deals over the last few years, especially, you know,
03:31no matter what Brian Cashman has given up, you know,
03:34the prospects that he's dealt haven't really come back to haunt him all that much.
03:38So we'll see if that's the case with this one.
03:40I know Herring in particular was having a strong year.
03:43He's a former six-round pick who started off at single A this year and got promoted to high A.
03:47a lefty who was putting up some pretty good results.
03:50But, you know, with McMahon having two years left on his deal,
03:54it was going to take some, you know, real collateral to get him.
03:58So I think, you know, the biggest thing is just dealing from an area where they had some depth there
04:03and, you know, still have other – more of their top prospects, you know,
04:07how other teams kind of view them available for, you know,
04:11some of the bigger swings that maybe they take here over the next couple days
04:14to solidify their bullpen and maybe add a starter as well.
04:18Yeah, I wanted to get to that with you about what the next couple of days could look like
04:21for the Yankees because they get their third baseman here.
04:24They're out on Suarez.
04:26Obviously, now the price seemed to be a little bit too high for the Yankees.
04:29But how does this deal affect the rest of the deadline for the Yanks here?
04:33Do you think they'll be aggressive in trying to fill those other needs
04:36that you talked about there, Greg?
04:38Yeah, I think so.
04:38I think getting this done early allows them to shift the full focus to the pitching now.
04:44And like I said, they didn't give up any of their top prospects in this deal.
04:49I don't think George Lombard Jr. is going to be on the move, you know, in any deal.
04:54But we'll see on Spencer Jones.
04:55He's obviously on a tear at AAA.
04:56He seems to be kind of playing his way into untouchable status maybe,
05:00but maybe in the right deal if you get a guy with control back.
05:03But we'll see.
05:04You know, they still have a number of other guys who are, you know,
05:07you know, higher in their system that are still available there for a trade.
05:10And so, you know, I think the biggest area of concern right now is bullpen.
05:16Obviously, a unit that's been, you know, overworked a lot over the last month
05:20and kind of exposed as well.
05:22And obviously, they've had some injuries there too.
05:24So, the circle of trust has kind of shrunk a little bit to just Devin Williams,
05:29Luke Weaver, and Tim Hill as well.
05:30But they need some arms there.
05:33And, you know, even though they have Luis Seala coming back and Ryan Yarbrough
05:37maybe at some point too next month, you know, it wouldn't be a surprise to see them
05:41try to get a starter that can help them stabilize too, you know,
05:46just because you can never have enough pitching, especially, you know,
05:48the last two months of the season.
05:50So, we'll see.
05:50But I would expect them to, you know, now turn in full focus to that bullpen
05:55and starting and try to be aggressive there.
05:57But it is a crowded market, everybody, you know, there's a lot more buyers
06:01and sellers at this point.
06:02Everybody's looking for pitching, especially bullpen.
06:04But they kind of have their sights set squarely on that now, I think,
06:09and still have the prospect collateral to do it.
06:12All right.
06:12Everybody's trying to get arms.
06:13The Yankees are trying to do the same.
06:15We'll see if they're able to do that before Thursday's trade deadline.
06:19But the Yankees do strike and get their third baseman, Ryan McMahon,
06:23coming over from the Colorado Rockies.
06:25That's Greg Joyce, Yankees meet reporter for us here with the New York Post.
06:29Greg, trade season in full effect.
06:32It is going to be busy.
06:33Keep the phone close.
06:35We will definitely talk soon.
06:37All right.
06:37You got it, Dexter.
