00:00It has been hard to watch the Yankees recently and see anything,
00:05but that all the problems that helped cost them a World Series last year
00:09have manifested again.
00:12John, you know I've led the chorus that they're not good at baseball.
00:14I did it all last year.
00:16You did.
00:17They added two players who are good at baseball,
00:19Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt, and somehow they still, look,
00:24Aaron Boone can tell me a good defense.
00:26They're buttoned up.
00:28I mean, they suck at this.
00:29They suck.
00:31And it is like, John, I'll make one analogy,
00:35and then I'll let you run with this.
00:36I did it on the Yankee webcast earlier.
00:40We're of a certain age.
00:41When we were young, one of the better heavyweights was Ernie Shavers.
00:44He was a top contender, and Ernie Shavers was a one-trick pony.
00:49It was a hell of a trick.
00:50If he hit you on the jaw, the fight was over.
00:52He had an unbelievable punch.
00:54But if he didn't hit you on the chin,
00:57he had very little else to win the fight.
01:00And it carried him to great lengths.
01:01He was a great heavyweight, but it didn't carry him all the way.
01:04I think the Yankees are Ernie Shavers.
01:06If the ball goes out of the ballpark,
01:08and they get some power pitching that day,
01:11they're fine.
01:13But if the other team decides it's an actual fight
01:15and puts the ball in play and forces them to play
01:17the way the Blue Jays have for a couple of series now,
01:21the Yankees go into the follies.
01:23It's not high-level performance.
01:26Yeah, it's a competition.
01:27Are they going to out-homer their mistakes?
01:29You know they're going to make mistakes,
01:31and they're going to hit home runs.
01:32Which are they going to do more of?
01:33That's basically what it's come down to.
01:36The Blue Jays are not a good matchup for them.
01:38They have the best contact rate.
01:40They strike out the fewest times in the American League.
01:44And, you know, when you put the ball in play against the Yankees,
01:46you know, good things are going to happen for you.
01:48I mean, I'm with you on the signings.
01:50Bellinger and Goldschmidt have been what you'd expect, really.
01:54I mean, they've been good defensively.
01:56You would think that would have helped.
01:58But I think we've seen regression,
02:00and you've covered it on your own show, on the Post,
02:04and infinitum about Volpe
02:07and about all the other guys
02:09who have been making mistakes.
02:11You know, I don't know.
02:13What can they do now?
02:14I mean, they're not going to sell.
02:16I know internally you've got people
02:18who are pretty upset the way things are going,
02:20and that's reflected in Boone's comments.
02:22He knows what everybody thinks internally.
02:24And now, you know, he's willing to say,
02:27you know, we've got to do better,
02:28which for him is really a slam.
02:30But what can they do?
02:32What can they do?
02:33Can you replace Volpe at this moment?
02:37You know, you're going to need a third baseman for sure.
02:40You're going to have to overpay if it's Suarez.
02:44You know, they're not selling, right?
02:46I mean, I know that they don't look like a playoff team right now,
02:49but they're in playoff position, right?
02:51And they got there last year with a similar team,
02:54even without Bellinger and Goldschmidt.
02:56So we know they're not selling.
02:57What can they do?
02:58John, I just want to go back to the idea of the besieged Aaron Boone.
03:04Like, he has portrayed this,
03:06and he's been angry these last few days,
03:09like he's being besieged.
03:11I'd like to not be the guy on the lawn.
03:14I'd like to not be the in-my-day guy.
03:16I think most things are better today than they used to be.
03:19But if the people who are around the team now,
03:22covering the team, take exception to this,
03:24I don't think Boone's asked very tough questions very often,
03:28and certainly not at any volume.
03:29I think that press conferences where you don't really get to follow things up,
03:33like we used to, by being in a manager's office,
03:36we used to have three and a half hours in a clubhouse.
03:38We really got to talk to players.
03:40You know, you got to know everyone.
03:41You got to ask pointed questions, whatever.
03:44I don't even think,
03:45I think that the press conferences and the internet have turned everybody soft
03:49because nobody wants to be criticized on the internet
03:51for being too tough on these guys.
03:52So nobody asked tough questions.
03:54Too few people asked tough questions.
03:57So this besieged act by Boone is a problem, I think,
04:00because I could tell you there were previous managers in that role
04:04who were much more besieged at bad times than he is now.
04:07Number two, look, I can't believe the grandson's son,
04:12brother, and himself a major leaguer,
04:14looks at this and keeps telling me
04:17that it isn't what everyone else is seeing.
04:19And at some point, you're going to lose credibility
04:22if you keep saying up is down and left is right.
04:25And, John, I think both of us, I don't want to speak for you.
04:28I like Aaron a great deal.
04:30I think Aaron is a good baseball man.
04:32But this tone, I do not,
04:35I don't think it's helpful.
04:38And I just think that the players,
04:40do the players not have enough of a fear level
04:42to be able to perform at a high,
04:45you know, like this really matters.
04:46Like, it's one thing to say,
04:47hey, you got to do this.
04:48And another thing to say,
04:49you're going to sit if you don't do this.
04:52I'm going to talk to reporters about it
04:53if you don't do it.
04:54You want to concentrate now on 90 feet?
04:56We got Pat Murphy coming on next, John.
04:59Want to watch the Brewers play a couple of games
05:00and see how much they respect 90 feet?
