00:00Look at this lovely establishment.
00:02Oh my goodness, who owns it?
00:03Oh, I know the owner.
00:05She's incredibly thin.
00:06All right, I need about a couple hours here
00:08to work some things out, and then we'll meet up.
00:10OK, sounds good.
00:11Don't hurt him, Hammer.
00:13Welcome to Milwaukee.
00:16It's gayer than you think, but only slightly.
00:19It's home to Liberace, but it's also
00:22the home of the first gay bar I ever went to.
00:26This Is It is the oldest gay bar in Wisconsin,
00:28and I am now a part owner.
00:30My business partner, George, has been running the bar
00:33for years, and he's got a lot of experience
00:35with permits and licensing, so it's worth a weekend trip
00:38to check in on the bar and get some advice for the motel.
00:42Hello, George.
00:44Well, look who the cat dragged in.
00:46Hi.
00:47Oh, good to see you.
00:48Good to see you, too.
00:50You know me, I love every opportunity
00:51to come out in daylight for drag.
00:53It's rare that we get to see you in the daylight.
00:55I flew all the way here in my private jet.
00:58Economy Comfort Plus.
01:00Because we're having some trouble with our license,
01:01and I just need a little bit of a pep talk.
01:03I need some guidance.
01:04There's a lot of different types of licenses,
01:05and they all are suited for different types of businesses.
01:09Our motel is seven rooms, which isn't quite big enough
01:13for a lot of the motel licenses,
01:16but it's not a bar technically,
01:17so it's not eligible for a lot of bar licenses.
01:20We're in this margin where we have to try to get
01:22this exact specific type.
01:24I know here, when we go through the city for anything,
01:27it seems impossible, but ultimately,
01:30you got to read the fine print,
01:32and if you work with whoever your local representative is,
01:34that's what we do here all the time.
01:36I mean, you've got your hands in so many different pots here.
01:39Sometimes it can seem overwhelming,
01:41but definitely just be persistent,
01:44and definitely take the time and go through
01:46all the steps that they want.
01:47I've found when you do what they want,
01:49they're going to come through for you.
01:51Really?
01:51Really.
01:52Investing in this business with you was easy.
01:54We already know and trust each other.
01:56It was already a thriving business.
01:58It really wasn't a risk for me
02:00because the business does so well.
02:02It's so different than opening a brand new business
02:05that I'm putting my actual name on
02:08that still doesn't have a liquor license,
02:09has to be completely renovated.
02:11I mean, I know from this,
02:13you even expanding was a struggle.
02:18It was.
02:18So building from scratch
02:20and then having to open the business has been like...
02:22Yeah, I don't envy you, but I know you can do it.
02:26Patience, persistence always pays off in the end.
02:29It's key to getting anything done in business.
02:31I'm ready to commit fraud to get there.
02:33I'm like, I know that in this space,
02:35we had to adapt to make the licenses work for us,
02:40and at the Trixie Motel,
02:41I'm just trying to still find those avenues.
02:44Well, I wouldn't advise fraud.
02:46I know, but I already have a disguise.
02:49It's working.
02:50I'm gonna need a drink.
02:52I'm known for a lot of things,
02:54but patience is not one of them.
02:56Persistence, on the other hand,
02:57now that's something I can work with,
02:59and it sounds like I'm gonna have to make some connections
03:01with the city to get this license.
03:03I mean, since I'm here at my own bar,
03:05I might as well get a free drink.
03:06For business, of course,
03:08I'm doing research for the motel, thank you.
03:10We're all about custom at the Trixie Motel,
03:12so a signature cocktail is a must.
03:15And I've enlisted the help of a very qualified friend
03:17to help me come up with the perfect cocktail
03:19for the motel bar.
03:21I'm Jada Essence Hall,
03:22winner of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 12,
03:25and drag superstar from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
03:28Trixie and I,
03:29we started outdoor drag basically at the same time.
03:32She has been one of my greatest friends.
03:34Welcome back to Milwaukee, bitch!
03:35Thank you. You know, I always thought if we both did Drag Race,
03:38we would see each other more,
03:39and I'm pretty sure that opposite of that has happened.
03:41Bitch, literally you're doing so many amazing things.
03:44You have something so unique,
03:46and you've always had a vision for everything
03:49that you've done in your life.
03:51And now look at you.
03:52I'm in Milwaukee, bitch, in your bar.
03:55Girl.
03:56I know, and I even let you in here.
03:57I'm glad you let me in this time.
03:59Last time when you kicked me out during Pride, bitch.
04:02Well, I know you won Drag Race and you have money now.
04:04I'm like, she's got money to spend.
04:05She can afford the shot.
04:06Let's get her some drinks.
04:08And I come in, I'm like, can I get anything well, please?
04:10I have to tell you, sometimes I think like,
04:12there's a million drag queens in the world.
04:13There's a million cities in the world.
04:15Yeah.
04:16I think of us when we were both 21.
04:17How did we both win Drag Race?
04:19How did that happen?
04:21Well, I think the thing is, is like,
04:23the universe loves beautiful people,
04:25and then look, now look at us.
04:29You have been so driven, girl,
04:30and you like, work really hard.
04:31Everything you do, the vodka.
04:33The vodka?
04:34The vodka.
04:35Well, stick to what you know.
04:36The doll, the clothing, the music.
04:38The doll.
04:39The wig, the doll's mama.
04:40The doll's mama.
04:41You know what I mean?
04:42Like, everything's stunning.
04:43I'm so proud of you, bitch.
04:44I really am.
04:45And now, a motel.
04:48A motel, because you know what?
04:49If I learn anything about gay people,
04:50they often need somewhere to stay.
04:52I have never in my life heard of a drag queen opening a motel.
04:56But as Trixie always does, she has a vision,
05:00and she is going to bring this motel to life.
05:02I got to be honest, I brought you here for the Kiki,
05:04but also, in true Trixie Mattel form, I need help.
05:08Oh, surprise, surprise.
05:09Yes.
05:10We need to decide on some drink recipes for the motel.
05:13Are you OK to test some drinks?
05:15Duh, let's do it.
05:16For the signature cocktail, it has to be pink.
05:18It has to be low calorie.
05:20And it has to be easy to make.
05:22I'm close friends with a lot of bartenders,
05:24and I do not want them to have
05:25to make something complicated.
05:27So the first drink we're going to sample today
05:29is a Vodka Sunrise.
05:30It comes with vodka, lemonade, soda,
05:34a little splash of cherry juice, and cranberry for color.
05:37Oh!
05:38You got that?
05:39No.
05:41I don't either.
05:42Absolutely not.
05:45Do you think I'm going to squirt you?
05:46Yes.
05:47I'm not even pointing it at you.
05:48I'm like a gremlin.
05:49If you get me wet, I'll multiply,
05:51and you're really going to be annoyed.
05:52That's not why you're like a gremlin, bitch.
05:55You'll garnish with a lemon.
05:57Oh, my god.
05:58Oh, I got you up.
06:00See, that's what I was afraid of.
06:02That's how you get a yeast infection.
06:06Oh.
06:06Cheers.
06:08This is good.
06:09Yeah.
06:09So are we testing these, or are we, like, blacking out?
06:13I'm going to ask you to do something you may have never
06:15done before, which is, like, pace yourself.
06:18We can try the pink squirrel.
06:21Oh, wow.
06:22My drinks just spilled a little bit out.
06:24You know, I always thought you were so flawless.
06:26I always thought you could do anything,
06:27and then I saw you make drinks.
06:33That might be enough, girls.
06:35OK.
06:36It's beautiful.
06:38Really cute.
06:38The pink squirrel was actually made first here in Milwaukee.
06:43Oh.
06:44This is so good.
06:45I actually would really consider putting this on the menu.
06:47It's very easy to bake.
06:49What do you think about a variation of the vodka soda?
06:52Vodka soda's easy because they call that gay water, right?
06:55Mm-hmm.
06:55Can we do, like, a spin on, like, a vodka soda,
06:57but, like, make it a little pink?
06:59Splash a crayon.
07:00Splash a crayon.
07:01Splash a crayon.
07:02OK, let me mix this up a little.
07:04There you go.
07:04I trust your fingers.
07:06Well, you know where they've been.
07:08You liked it.
07:09I loved it.
07:11It's light.
07:12It's cool.
07:12It's simple.
07:14It's low-calorie.
07:14It feels like a drink, drink, drink.
07:17I think we should call it the skinny legend.
07:19Skinny legend.
07:20After me, thank you.
07:21Yeah, after you.
07:22How about we try the hot pink dolly?
07:24Do you need anything from the warehouse?
07:26I'm going to take the elevator.
07:29OK, the alcohol is hitting.
07:38I became diabetic.
07:48Woo!
07:49Four incredible contenders for the crown stand before me.
07:53I'm so proud of how far all of you have come.
07:56Only one of you can take the crown and come live
07:58in my lovely motel.
08:01And the rest of you will have to pack your bags
08:04and return home tonight.
08:07A.K.A. Jaden and I will probably drink you.
08:10The winner is...
08:17The skinny legend!
08:19Yay!
08:20Yay!
08:21Woo!
08:22You can see people next to the pool in the direct sunlight
08:25and get a camera light.
08:34I can't leave Milwaukee behind without a little family moment.
08:38We all know I hate children.
08:39But my sister just had a baby,
08:41and being an uncle is very important to me.
08:43I don't think I've seen your mom since you bought our house.
08:46She's going to love to see you, too.
08:47She loves you.
08:48But don't get too attached, because we've
08:50got to get back to the motel.
08:51They think we'll be OK.
08:55Come on in!
08:56Hello!
08:57Hi!
08:58Hello!
08:59Hello!
09:00Hello!
09:01I'm Val.
09:02I'm Trixie's mom.
09:03And welcome to our home.
09:04Nobody's going to see you.
09:05Hello!
09:06Hello!
09:07Good to see you.
09:08Good to see you.
09:09It's nice to have family here.
09:11Very nice.
09:12It has been a little while.
09:14Trixie's always working, busy, busy, busy.
09:16So it's so nice when he can come.
09:18David, this is my Aunt Laura.
09:19Hello!
09:20Hi!
09:21Nice to meet you.
09:22Auntie Gooch, David.
09:23I'm very glad David's here,
09:24because I haven't seen him in quite some time.
09:26He's a nice guy.
09:27I like him.
09:29She, I'm happy David's here.
09:31I'm happy to get away from that motel for five seconds,
09:34because it is driving us crazy.
09:36It is.
09:37It's a lot.
09:38Well, and I hear about the motel that David and Trixie are taking on.
09:43At first, I was just surprised, because he never was interested in that.
09:47I was kind of like, that's out of his element.
09:50But he's doing it.
09:52Do you love your Uncle Brian?
09:54She's a little obsessed with him.
09:56Every time she sees him, she smiles.
09:58Do you guys ever think about having a baby or, like, adopting?
10:00No.
10:02My motel is my baby.
10:03Yeah, we have a baby.
10:04It's 70 years old.
10:05Your work is your baby.
10:06In seven bedrooms.
10:07Yeah, and to save money, we're doing a lot of renovation ourselves, which is, uh...
10:10I've seen that.
10:11I know what you're thinking.
10:12Brian, you're probably so good at that.
10:14I'm not.
10:15And it's really hard.
10:17We pretty much run into, like, every version of electrical, plumbing, heating, cooling,
10:22like, any extra problem, we've had it happen.
10:25The only way to save money is to do things ourselves.
10:27Like tearing out cabinets and walls.
10:29Oh, wow.
10:30That was fun.
10:31Well, think about it.
10:32That's kind of crazy, because your grandpa, your great uncles,
10:36they built houses for years.
10:38I know.
10:39Ripping it apart was free and enjoyable.
10:41Building it is more expensive and time-consuming.
10:43Oh, of course.
10:44But in the end, you'll love it.
10:47You'll be glad you put the time into it.
10:49And you're like, wow, I did this.
10:51We did this.
10:52Yeah.
10:53But we are doing it in about half the time it should take
10:55and about half the budget it should take.
10:57So that's crazy.
10:58Even the stuff that we thought would be cheap costs extra money.
11:00And then we keep finding new problems.
11:02Stuff that you can't even begin.
11:04Did you guys ever watch those whole makeover shows?
11:07Not until recently.
11:08Same.
11:09They always run into problems.
11:11There's always something.
11:12Well, why didn't you tell me?
11:13I thought you knew what you're doing.
11:15No.
11:16It's too much.
11:17I've just been bothering you a lot, because it's just,
11:20it's been really stressful.
11:21It's a lot.
11:22It does sound like it's a lot.
11:23Well, you know Brian.
11:24He's a workhorse.
11:25He loves to work.
11:26And he's been just doing a great job.
11:29He's still been traveling and crazy.
11:31I know.
11:32I know.
11:33He does work hard and a lot.
11:34And I've even told him in the past that, you know,
11:36sometimes you just got to slow down, take a break for yourself.
11:40You were right about that.
11:41Yep.
11:42If you can sleep eight hours.
11:43The type of job you do, it's very demanding.
11:46Yeah.
11:47It's been a little bit of a wake up call.
11:48But honestly, part of, part of the point of opening the motel is like,
11:52that's a sustainable business that I don't have to necessarily dress up every day.
11:57I don't know if by 50, I could be cross dressing on stage five days a week.
12:01I mean, that's a lot.
12:02Trixie's success is phenomenal.
12:05I'm just awed at his work, what he does.
12:09He is a hard worker.
12:10He's earned it.
12:11And the motel, as it goes on, there's more involved, a little bit more than they,
12:16you know, expected.
12:18But I think it's going to be a good thing.
12:20I'm excited when it's completely finished, because I'm going to come visit.
12:24You come to the opening party?
12:25Maybe.
12:26Yeah, you will.
12:27Maybe.
12:28Yeah, you have to come to the desert.
12:30I'll put you in drag again.
12:32Oh yeah, I remember that.
12:34Fall in the pool drunk.
12:35No!
12:36Yeah.
12:37Tequila shots.
12:46It was nice to go home and see my family.
12:49And not do manual labor in the desert for a few days.
12:52That was a big part of it too.
12:54Are you feeling any better about the liquor license now that you've talked to George?
12:57I know you've been working with a lawyer and working on paperwork, but I might try to
13:01schmooze somebody at the city.
13:03Give them a little of a nudge, a little wink-wink, a little...
13:06Couldn't hurt.
13:08What about you?
13:09Any good news?
13:10Come on, good news.
13:11Give me the good news.
13:12Well, we're not getting sued for painting the building bank.
13:15So, that's the vibe.
13:17Alright, what's next?
13:18You're gonna tell me all the money we've blown and how much work we have left to do?
13:22Well, we're already about six weeks in and half of the money has been spent.
13:27We have three rooms left.
13:29The lobby, the bar, the check-in, the pool.
13:32I mean, the pressure is on.
13:33But you know what will make us both feel better?
13:36Uh-huh.
13:38Besides that.
13:39Oh.
13:40I have a field trip planned.
13:41I have never seen anything like this in my life.
13:52No, I mean, it's out of this world, which is why I brought you here.
13:58What is this place called?
13:59Robo Lights.
14:02It's like an alien crash landed here and was like, I can do lawn decorations.
14:07And it was like, too much.
14:09For the next room, we've done a very bright pink room.
14:20We've done more funky purples, oranges.
14:24We've done a cowgirl room with turquoise, maybe this room.
14:27We play around with more like outer space colors and shapes and do something really wacky and out of this world.
14:34Something kind of darker but kind of glowier.
14:36I mean, all of our rooms so far are so bright.
14:39Do you think Dani's gonna like this?
14:41I don't think Dani would like this, but I think her interpretation of what we're gonna give her, she has a lot of room to play around with.
14:50The colors, the vibe, the pattern she creates.
14:54You're really getting into this.
14:56Yeah.
14:57I always thought you were just like, you know.
14:59What?
15:00Just somebody who just kind of rode my coattails and just like basked in my glory and now you're really contributing.
15:06Yeah.
15:07David.
15:08I know.
15:11We should do something really out of this world like this.
15:15Well, not like this.
15:16Make it like outer space themed.
15:19A little like Jane Fonda's Barbarella fantasy.
15:22Like a alien woman.
15:24It is her home.
15:25It is her room.
15:27I love it.
15:28The atomic age.
15:30An atomic age, maybe atomic bombshell.
15:32I love 60s does future.
15:35So I really like that.
15:36Yeah.
15:37I feel like you're giving that right now.
15:38You're the atomic bombshell.
15:39We just have to build a room around you.
15:44Well, I'm really glad that you're already on board with the atomic bombshell vibe because I have invited a very special guest to come and see it.
15:51E.T.
15:52She wasn't available.
15:54Who is it?
15:57Oh.
15:59She's the ultimate like space woman fantasy.
16:02And she's crash landing in Palm Springs in two weeks.
16:12This room, the design is going to be truly out of this world.
16:15So this is going to be the atomic bombshell room.
16:20So we're going full Jetsons, 60s, imagining the future.
16:24I love that idea.
16:25Yeah.
16:26It's very different than a lot of the other rooms.
16:28Very different.
16:29And I think of all the rooms, this will be the one where if you were lucky enough to poke your head in, you'd be like, whoa.
16:35Like transported to a different galaxy.
16:41I think we can go really fun with murals in this room and like really have that like high impact design.
16:48What is it?
16:49Um, something fun and spacey.
16:51I mean, how can we tie that into other areas of the room?
16:53Tell me what you're thinking.
16:54Well, I was thinking of like planets, you know, like moon, the earth, just circles.
16:59Yes.
17:01I'm thinking a circle bed.
17:03I mean, if you're wanting to do circular.
17:05A circle bed?
17:06Yes.
17:07I mean, have you not seen this at vintage motels?
17:08They have all sorts of funky shaped beds that would tie into the theme.
17:12It could almost be like a saucer.
17:14A circular bed with like blue lighting or something weird.
17:17I feel like that's how we can really make it stand out from the other rooms.
17:23Let's get this straight.
17:24The atomic bombshell.
17:26She's not like the other rooms.
17:28Let's get spaced out with purples and blues in the murals on two walls and give full razo another shot on the floor.
17:35The circular bed will be like a flying saucer ready to serve alien probing fantasy.
17:41No judgment here.
17:42Let's go full on intergalactic with planets, stars and fun lighting.
17:47And to make a space woman feel right at home, futuristic 60s furniture.
17:52That should do it.
17:54Beam me up.
17:56And the space odyssey will continue into the bathroom with rainbow stripes of color and dazzling fixtures.
18:03I'm really excited about this.
18:05I love weird 60s like space stuff.
18:09I can sort of see it now.
18:10I'm glad you're here because unless you were here, I don't know if I could see it now.
18:13I'll be your space guide.
18:20I really want people to walk in here and blast into space.
18:23And right now, they are blasting into lunch meat.
18:25So, let's start.
18:29Get my hook hand.
18:30I gotta get my hook hand.
18:31Oh, come on.
18:32Uh-oh.
18:33Hit your muscles.
18:41The joy I feel in my heart right now getting this out of here.
18:44Look familiar?
18:48Thank you so much.
18:54Here we go.
18:55Oh!
18:56Those boots are coming handy.
18:57Oh, I'm so light.
18:58This isn't going to do anything.
19:02Yes!
19:05I did it.
19:06Days like this, I just have to take a second to appreciate how ridiculous this whole process is.
19:16White shorts and loafers?
19:17I mean, David Rios is not your typical project manager.
19:21He's the Trixie Motel's project manager.
19:23The demo on this went faster, so let's just start putting it in drag.
19:33So, is that flight for our special guest booked?
19:36Mm-hmm.
19:37Okay, because we're going all out.
19:38We have lots of custom.
19:40We have two hand-painted murals.
19:42And we're doing paint on the floor with white flecks so it looks like stars.
19:46That sounds like Farazzo.
19:48We're not doing that.
19:49We've got to give Danny another shot here, okay?
19:51We're using the right kind of paint.
19:52You have to have a little faith.
19:55I hope you're right.
20:01All right.
20:03Hey!
20:04Some progress is being made in here.
20:06Don't worry about all the holes in the walls.
20:07There's all the electrical going in, so it's good news.
20:10Oh yeah, that's good.
20:11Yeah, we have a lot of electrical in this room with all the fun lights we're doing,
20:15making it really feel like you're inside of a spaceship.
20:18We're talking about doing, with the lighting, having a special switch that'll have a blast-off moment.
20:23So it's like you turn the switch on and all of a sudden the room is like in blast-off mode.
20:27It's for when the edible hits.
20:29Yeah.
20:30I mean, this would be the room.
20:32Let's be honest, a lot of interior designers would be scared of this crazy space vibe,
20:38but Danny's already pretty out there.
20:41I know that we're kind of saying other rooms are like the romantic room.
20:45This is the room to have sex in.
20:47Weird alien sex in here.
20:49Currently it's a dirty room with holes in the wall,
20:51but it's not unlike my first apartment and I was very happy there, so.
20:56We have a sample of the wallpaper.
20:58So I custom designed that to match the room.
21:01Uh, did a lot of fun colors.
21:03This is so beautiful.
21:04Thank you!
21:05On this wall, it's gonna be over the window.
21:08I really wanted this room to be a little different than the other rooms.
21:11I mean, the theme is like a little more funky.
21:14It's a little less feminine.
21:16It's little boy's room if your little boy was an alien.
21:19Danny's so gifted and her vision is so strong.
21:22She takes big swings, she has big ideas,
21:25and she's not afraid of color and pattern and making a huge impact.
21:28That's her drag.
21:30Danny goes big with everything.
21:32It's probably my favorite design of the world.
21:34Is it?
21:35Yes.
21:36Amazing.
21:37I love this room.
21:38If I stayed here, this is where I would wanna stay.
21:39Hell yeah.
21:40I just think it's so cool.
21:41And there's nothing like it.
21:43There will never be anything like it.
21:45No.
21:46The pink and white tile is being installed around the edge of the pool.
21:52It's the first step in the pool transformation.
21:55So lots of work left, but at least it's an improvement.
21:58Today we are in Los Angeles on our way to Total Design Furniture.
22:08That is where Mark translates drawings into finished pieces of furniture.
22:14And we're gonna pitch in my latest idea for the atomic bombshell bed.
22:19Wow.
22:24By far, this project has, like, more custom than we've ever, ever done.
22:33I feel like today we're going to throw them, like, the biggest challenge yet.
22:37Okay, so as you know, all the rooms are themed.
22:40We have the Queen of Hearts bed, which turned out really awesome.
22:43We have the Horseshoe bed for Yeehaw Cowgirl.
22:46That one was a challenge.
22:47That one was a challenge?
22:48Yeah.
22:48Okay, and this one is really out of this world.
22:52Okay.
22:54It's the Atomic Bombshell room,
22:56and the centerpiece of the room is going to be a circular spaceship bed.
23:02Huh.
23:04Sounds fun, right?
23:05Okay, we sourced a mattress,
23:08so I'm assuming we can, like, give you those measurements
23:10and maybe go off of that.
23:12Is it perfectly round, or is it...
23:14Yeah, perfectly round.
23:16Assuming it's the full length,
23:17then that most likely means it's probably bigger than the doorframe.
23:21So that means we're building on site.
23:23Building, like, inside of the room?
23:25Pretty much.
23:26If not, I don't think we're going to get that in.
23:27Oh, my God, you're right.
23:29Is that going to be difficult to do, to build in the room?
23:32Makes it more complicated, not the worst in the world, but doable.
23:34Okay.
23:35Oh, that's what I wanted to hear.
23:38He knows what he's doing.
23:39Okay, so we're talking circle bed, total spaceship vibe, and this fabric.
23:44I mean, it's going to make this room so special
23:47and really transport you out of this world.
23:50Okay, Vark, total honesty.
23:51Yeah.
23:52Are we your, like, wackiest clients when it comes to custom design?
23:57This week, yeah.
23:58This week?
23:59In general, I have some wackier ones.
24:02Really?
24:03Like what?
24:04A couple strip clubs out there, you know?
24:05Really?
24:06Oh, my God, I want to design a strip club one day.
24:08Nice.
24:09So I know we've been working together for years.
24:11I can't believe this is the first time here, and this is so cool.
24:14How long have you had this space?
24:15This location?
24:16About five years.
24:17And how many pieces do you make here, like, a week or a month?
24:22Maybe about 20 pieces a week or so.
24:24That's awesome.
24:25Yeah.
24:26Yeah, I mean, I, like, walked back there, there's so much going on.
24:29It's so cool to see.
24:30Yeah.
24:31I mean, I'm fascinated by, like, seeing the guts of the furniture and how it's made,
24:35and I feel like it'll be really cool to be able to show that, like, people can do custom stuff,
24:40and it is attainable, and you can find the right people to work with.
24:43Yeah.
24:46The Atomic Bombshell room has been wired.
24:49The drywall is up, and it's ready for two murals.
24:52The very gay painters are coming back for the assist on that.
24:55But first, what I'm gagged about is seeing some work happening on the pool.
25:00Oh, my God, these tiles are so cool.
25:03Wow.
25:04Oh, my God.
25:06Wow.
25:07It's so rich.
25:09It's so upscale.
25:10Alternating pink and white stripes?
25:13Only the most brilliant of minds could have thought of that.
25:16I'm going to throw on some coveralls and check on the homo muralists.
25:20Make sure they understand the assignment.
25:23So you did such a good job in the Queen of Hearts room.
25:27It's beautiful.
25:29It's flawless.
25:30She is the moment.
25:31However, we have to paint this big mural, because when people walk in that door,
25:36they're supposed to be, like, transported to another universe.
25:39Space.
25:40Time.
25:41And it has to be, like, pew.
25:42Okay.
25:43Okay.
25:44It's straight themed?
25:45Yeah.
25:4660s space.
25:47So, like, think Jetsons, think Mars Attacks.
25:50Back when space was gay.
25:51Yeah.
25:52Make space gay again.
25:53Make space gay again.
25:54Make space gay again.
25:55Let's do it.
25:56Let's just start.
25:57Tell you guys, because you're professionals, although I know you guys are self-taught professionals,
26:01so hopefully you've made all the mistakes on other people's homes, and you're not going
26:05to make them here.
26:06Yes.
26:07Don't zoom in on anything we've done on Instagram, please.
26:15What's the worst thing that can happen doing something like this?
26:18If you'd be surprised, some people take a really long time to pay us.
26:22That's no bueno.
26:24Sort of unique to our industry.
26:26Yeah, I would never do that.
26:32How do I get my jumpsuit to look as messy as yours?
26:35Just go paint a line here.
26:37Ready?
26:38Boom.
26:39Oh, you messed it up.
26:40Okay?
26:41Go for it.
26:42You want me to mess this up?
26:43What's up?
26:44Oh, okay, great.
26:45Now, take your hand.
26:46Boom.
26:47Wherever you want.
26:48Oh.
26:49No.
26:50This.
26:51Yeah, yeah, literally.
26:52There you go.
26:53You're moaning as you do this.
26:54No, guys.
26:55Oh.
26:56Oh.
26:57Oh.
26:58Oh.
26:59Oh.
27:00What's wrong, babe?
27:01I guess this is sort of a workplace for me.
27:04Oh, yeah.
27:05Sorry.
27:06I'm sorry.
27:07Conduct just feels really inappropriate.
27:09Well, I'm a hooker, and everywhere is my workplace.
27:12Do you guys have an HR department?
27:14I'll say this.
27:15Okay.
27:16We're really moving along.
27:17Maybe Very Gay Paint should be three people.
27:19We saw you from across the motel.
27:20I was wondering if you wanted to join every gay paint can.
27:22I was wondering if you wanted to join every gay paint can.
27:23I really love your vibe.
27:24Can we buy you a paint can?
27:26No.
27:32People will stay here and complain about everything.
27:34Oh, my God.
27:35And it's going to be filled with gay people, and they are-
27:38And they're the worst guests.
27:39The worst guests.
27:40Silicon-based lubes.
27:41There's going to be lube everywhere.
27:42Please.
27:43Everywhere.
27:44Everywhere.
27:45Which then becomes a slip issue, and then someone breaks their femur at the pool.
27:48And guess who goes down?
27:49That's you, baby.
27:50It's me.
27:58What is going on here?
28:00Hi.
28:01Hi.
28:02What is this?
28:06We thought maybe we would put a little spin on it.
28:09I think you can mess around with you guys.
28:11You're too good.
28:12I was so scared.
28:13Do you think it's possible to finish this one and that one by the end of the game?
28:17I mean, if we don't have this one.
28:20Yeah.
28:21I think if we can have some quiet moments of focus.
28:24Well, you know how in tennis there's Venus, there's Serena, and then the ball girl.
28:28Maybe I should be the ball girl.
28:29Yeah.
28:30Gay people can do anything.
28:32They're some of the most amazing people in the world.
28:34The imagination of a gay person is boundless.
28:38If you put two gay people together, whoa.
28:41Three gay people?
28:42That's too many.
28:43That's not going to work.
28:44What is this, though?
28:45Well, that's...
28:47Look at this one.
28:48That's why she's in the corner, actually.
28:49You know when you're like free in the moment?
28:51I was free in the moment.
28:52I mean, what's nice is you can always paint over paint.
28:55We are eating through this pretty quickly, I think.
28:57For the size of it.
28:58Yeah, this is going pretty cool.
29:00No.
29:01You guys, this is like one of the more simple murals.
29:05Oh.
29:06You guys are doing a wonderful job, but...
29:08Oh, our simple little murals.
29:12Well, not the response I wanted, but the response I got.
29:15Well, I'm just trying to be real because timeline is absolutely nuts.
29:19And this wall, have you guys painted on a textured wall like this?
29:23Yeah.
29:24Unfortunately.
29:25Yeah.
29:26I'm really worried about this one.
29:27Yes.
29:28Yeah, I think it's going to be challenging.
29:30Well, if we've seen how I handle lines on a flat wall...
29:33We're going to kill it.
29:34You're going to love what I do on this wall.
29:36It was a really nice surprise to come here and find that we were going to be working on a lot of different textured walls.
29:40They're not even brick walls.
29:41No.
29:42They are like climbing gym walls.
29:45It's like being inside of a cave.
29:47It gives me a lot of respect for the people that painted in caves in prehistoric times.
29:51All right, I'm going to get an apron and I'm going to hop in there.
29:54Hey, guys.
29:55Hey.
29:56Baby, babe, please help us.
29:57Oh, my God.
29:58Wow.
29:59We have the whole team.
30:00The brick is always the worst part.
30:02We need a woman's touch.
30:03I think with the four of us, we're going to knock this out, though.
30:06So, I'm going to argue that there are five of us.
30:09Hi.
30:10Who did you erase in your mind, Bianna?
30:13It's like a full...
30:15It was Trixie.
30:17Yeah, I know how I'm easy to forget considering you're painting a mural at the Trixie Motel.
30:23Look, if it saves us a little money, I'm more than happy to get my hands dirty.
30:27At least then I know it's going to be done right.
30:29And I thought I was the control freak.
30:31It's three in the morning.
30:41I think we did a really good job.
30:43I'm tired.
30:44I can't look at the mural anymore because my eyes will start to cross.
30:48This is absolutely by far my favorite thing in the motel so far.
30:53It's just perfect.
30:54It's flawless.
30:55It doesn't even look like it could be done by hand.
30:57It's amazing.
30:58This was a hard-ass wall and we really pulled it off.
31:01We are some of the most amazing artists in the world.
31:05All right, I'm too tired.
31:06Let's go.
31:08Bye.
31:09Bye.
31:10So we're at the Midway Point and we're working on our fourth room.
31:20But between us girls, I'm a little nervous because we still have a huge lobby that hasn't even been touched yet.
31:26I know we can't start swinging hammers in the lobby until we get a permit, but I feel better if we at least start talking about what's going to happen here.
31:32We only have two months before I'm supposed to go out on tour.
31:35So as soon as this permit comes through, we need to start swinging.
31:40Okay, so this is like the big common area.
31:46This has to be the most Trixie space.
31:49The rooms tell stories.
31:50Yes.
31:51But when they come here, I want to return them.
31:53You're at the Trixie Motel.
31:55It's a beautiful space, but right now it is so dark.
31:58Dark.
31:59It's so dark.
32:00We need to lighten her up.
32:01Look at these beams.
32:02Yeah.
32:03These beams are grand.
32:04They're beautiful.
32:05Let's pop them out.
32:06I want to paint them.
32:07What do you think?
32:08I want to keep them.
32:09So painting them is a way to keep them and still change them to our vibe.
32:12I mean, it would brighten the space up so much, just adding like a light color to the floor, to the ceiling.
32:18Let's talk color palettes.
32:19What are you thinking for this room?
32:20It has to be pink.
32:22It has to be a little bit of gold.
32:24It has to be a heavy dose of kitsch, but because this is the common space, kind of heightened and elegant.
32:30This is a little crazy, but in my house in Los Angeles, there's a portrait of me, front and center.
32:37What does it look like?
32:38It's me.
32:39It's big blonde hair.
32:40It's like this.
32:41Love.
32:42Love.
32:43Everyone who walks in immediately aroused.
32:44It's just boners.
32:46Welcome to the lobby.
32:49The leopard print and wood tones are killing the vibe.
32:53Baby girl, we need to go white and pink to really brighten this space up.
32:58I want an upscale lounge vibe.
33:00Think plush furniture.
33:01And let's turn up the heat around the fireplace with touches of gold.
33:05Ooh, and a luxe bank hat along the wall.
33:09Intimate.
33:10When guests walk in that door, they'll know exactly whose motel this is.
33:14Do you want to talk about the rest of the room?
33:16Yeah, let's talk about it.
33:18You guys are a lovely young couple looking to hang out.
33:20You walk in, and the intention here would be that this will be the bar.
33:25We are going out of faith here that we actually get the license.
33:28I mean, we still don't know if we can even do this.
33:30It's kind of lofty, but everything we're doing here is kind of scary and lofty.
33:39Standing in my future bar is just the motivation I need to make some moves and put George's advice into action.
33:45Brandon, get the mayor on the line.
33:48You're the first female mayor of Palm Springs.
33:56That's right.
33:57After 83 years, we finally have a female mayor.
34:00Wow.
34:01And I'm the first drag queen opening a business here.
34:04It's incredible.
34:05You're a trailblazer.
34:06We are both trailblazers.
34:07We are.
34:08I'm the city's first ever female mayor, and I'm the first openly bi mayor in the country.
34:14Congratulations.
34:16Well, you know, bi people are kind of famously invisible, even in the LGBTQIA plus community.
34:22We are.
34:23And so I think it takes people just being open about themselves, you know?
34:27Yeah.
34:28There's a lot more bi people.
34:29They just aren't open.
34:30There's probably even bi mayors.
34:31They're just afraid to.
34:32Exactly.
34:33They're not as comfortable being honest as you've been.
34:35Exactly.
34:36Yeah.
34:37And Palm Springs keeps paving the way.
34:39In 2017, we became the first all-LGBT city council in the country.
34:45Wow.
34:46Next year, we'll have the first trans mayor in the state of California, Lisa Middleton.
34:52Wow.
34:53The LGBT community here is just incredible.
34:56You know, we think we're the gayest place on Earth.
34:59Oh, it's the gayest.
35:00Well, now it is.
35:01Yeah.
35:02Now that I moved down the street, it's the gayest place on Earth.
35:04Cheers.
35:05Trixie couldn't have picked a better city in the country or really in the world to open a drag queen-owned motel.
35:13Trixie reached out to talk about her motel, so I'm looking forward to sitting down with her and learning about her business and seeing how we can be supportive.
35:20So what I have discovered so far is there's a lot of regulations here.
35:24You can't just roll into town and paint your motel.
35:28That's right.
35:29I mean, even the color of the motel is like a topic of discussion.
35:34Yeah, we say Palm Springs is like no place else, and we want to keep it that way.
35:38So it's really a balance between supporting new businesses coming in and changing the city, but keeping our brand and keeping it unique.
35:48So we want to preserve our mountain views.
35:50We want to preserve our architecture that's famous all over the world.
35:54Yeah, I get it.
35:56I mean, we're trying to create something that is very in line, I think, with Palm Springs values.
36:02It's just sometimes the time and like the, oh, I'm just trying to paint my front door.
36:06You know what I mean?
36:07I wish they could just see me with a wig on and be like, I can trust that person.
36:11We have a history of business owners getting involved in politics because of city regulations.
36:17So Sonny Bono actually ran for mayor because he owned a local restaurant and the city wouldn't let him put up a sign.
36:25And so he said, fine, I'm just going to run for mayor and change the rules.
36:30Sonny Bono was about the drama.
36:32That's fierce.
36:33Do you think that I should just be mayor if they don't like my paint color?
36:37Probably.
36:38Just run.
36:39Is that why you ran for mayor?
36:40You wanted to paint your house?
36:42No.
36:43No.
36:44I think Trixie's a perfect fit for Palm Springs.
36:46You can really feel her enthusiasm for her business, her love of the community.
36:52She's just going to make Palm Springs that much better and that much gayer.
36:56This has been like, honestly, so amazing.
36:59I want to do this so well.
37:01And the opinion of someone like you who really knows Palm Springs matters to me so much.
37:06Really, really, really.
37:07I really appreciate it.
37:09I know you can do it.
37:16I'm feeling good about that meeting.
37:18You know, politicians are always so transparent and honest.
37:21I think that went really well.
37:22Now, we're four days out from this room being finished.
37:26The bed is in production.
37:28Everything is being painted.
37:29Things are being installed.
37:31Danny's really nailing it.
37:33In the bathroom, we painted the walls with these colorful stripes.
37:36Stunning.
37:37And our second attempt at faux razzle flooring is underway.
37:47Hello.
37:48Hi.
37:51I know.
37:52Oh.
37:53I know.
37:54I know.
37:55I know.
37:56I know.
37:57The print is too small.
37:58Yeah.
37:59What happened?
38:00Okay, I'm gonna be honest.
38:01This is the first time I've ever done prints to go on a wall.
38:04I'm used to doing clothing, obviously.
38:06And when my printer brings me a piece of fabric, I literally hold it up to my leg.
38:13And that's how I scale it for clothing.
38:15And that's what you did with this?
38:17It doesn't work quite the same way, it turns out.
38:21You have some of the smallest legs I know.
38:25This is a wall.
38:27Maybe it'll work.
38:28You just need a friend with bigger legs.
38:30Perhaps.
38:31I will say this.
38:33Scale matters.
38:34This is such a chic print you made.
38:39And at this scale, it is kids' bedroom.
38:43Has David seen this?
38:45No.
38:46I was gonna wait.
38:47Don't show it to David.
38:48This never happened.
38:49Don't show it to David.
38:50He doesn't need to stress about it.
38:51Don't show it to David.
38:52Yeah.
38:53Well, how long is it gonna take to fix this, though?
38:56I mean, taking off wallpaper is a lot more difficult than putting it on.
39:00Yeah.
39:01So there could even be some options.
39:03We might just wallpaper on top of the wallpaper.
39:06I mean, have you ever, like, seen reno shows of old houses and they're just peeling back layers and layers of wallpaper?
39:12Yeah.
39:13So that could be an option.
39:15When the motel goes bankrupt and we become repurposed as an orphanage, they can just pull it back.
39:20Love it.
39:21Yeah.
39:22I mean, it's hard to not walk in and kind of laugh.
39:24It's funny.
39:25I know.
39:26Well, I'm glad you're taking it with stride because I was a little horrified when I first walked in.
39:30And I knew it immediately looks so different from the renderings and has such a different impact.
39:37Babe.
39:38Hey.
39:39Hello.
39:40Hey.
39:41It's a boy.
39:42Oh, I love it.
39:43Don't you?
39:44Oh, see?
39:45This is, like, what a difference.
39:46That is fun.
39:47So much better.
39:48Much better.
39:49Yeah.
39:50You can actually see the design, but I don't know.
39:52Should we go a little bigger?
39:53I think we could go even bigger.
39:55I mean, look at how small this is.
39:57I think it should go bigger.
39:58I didn't want to say it, but I think it should go bigger.
40:00I think we're almost there.
40:01We're making progress.
40:02Yeah.
40:03I mean, this is, like, my favorite room so far.
40:04And I know you have a lot of stuff over here.
40:06Mm-hmm.
40:07And I think if these shapes are bigger, it'll allow us to be more wacky.
40:12This will be fixed in no time.
40:15And we don't show David.
40:16Don't show David.
40:17Don't show David.
40:18Our little secret.
40:22To make sure this room is ready for our special guest, we had to bring a weekend crew to remove
40:26and reapply the new wallpaper.
40:28But so worth it.
40:29Size matters.
40:30And thankfully, the company threw us a bone and did the reprint for free.
40:34The room is very beautiful.
40:35All right.
40:36It's gonna be a good idea.
40:37We're gonna move on.
40:38Bye.
40:39All right.
40:40I'll move on.
40:41All right.
40:42Today's a really exciting day.
40:43The circle bed for Atomic is going in the room.
40:44They're actually assembling the entire bed here inside of the room and bringing it in piece
40:49by piece because it wouldn't be able to go through the door.
40:52and look at the floor.
40:54The faux rasso worked and this glossy finish
40:56is totally transformative.
40:58We really pulled off something cool for this room
41:01and very out of this world.
41:08We are T-minus one day
41:10until the Atomic Bombshell room lifts off.
41:14Lights of every kind are going in,
41:16furniture's arriving, fixtures are being installed.
41:20Things are looking weird and wonderful.
41:34Ground control to Major David, it's launch day.
41:39And just in time for our special guests.
41:41Get into this circular bed, it is interstellar
41:45and this velvet makes it all look so luxe.
41:47Well, it wasn't cheap,
41:48but we had to go custom for this room.
41:50And look at the custom egg chairs.
41:52What planet did Danny find these on?
41:55Uranus?
41:56They're perfect.
41:57And the floor is tripping me out.
41:59I'm so glad we finally figured out
42:00how to make Farazzo work.
42:02I think my favorite part of this room is the light fixture.
42:05I mean, look at the UFO.
42:06We wanted this blast off moment and baby, we got it.
42:09The gold fixtures in the bathroom are the crowning touch.
42:12This room is truly out of this world,
42:14and perfect for our extraterrestrial visitor.
42:18Hello, I'm Juno Birch, and I'm a stunning alien drag queen,
42:24and I have crash-landed here in Palm Springs at the Trixie Motel.
42:29You've done it again. I'll take it from here.
42:31All right, thank you.
42:33Good luck.
42:34There is a special room that I have to see,
42:37so I'm ready. Hit me, bitch.
42:39Oh! Oh, my goodness, me.
42:40There's my colors!
42:41Ah!
42:42There's my colors!
42:43Right here, guys.
42:44I've landed here in Palm Springs at the Trixie Motel.
42:46You've done it again. I'll take it from here.
42:47All right, thank you.
42:48Good luck.
42:50There is a special room that I have to see,
42:53so I'm ready. Hit me, bitch.
42:58Oh!
43:00Oh, my goodness me.
43:02Wow.
43:03Oh, my God. Look at the bed!
43:05Isn't it amazing?
43:06This is insane.
43:09This is happening!
43:12This is happening!
43:13Oh, my God!
43:16This is so cool!
43:18Can you believe?
43:19I cannot.
43:21Am I dreaming?
43:24Custom bed, circular.
43:26Oh, my goodness.
43:27So, you're laying down.
43:27It feels like you're being beamed up like a cow.
43:30Oh, yes!
43:30Right?
43:31I said that the other day, and they were like,
43:33what are you talking about?
43:33I said, cows get abducted.
43:35Oh, all the time.
43:36We do it for the fashion, darling.
43:38And look at these fake plants we painted.
43:41I love.
43:42They have these on my home planet.
43:44Absolutely gorgeous.
43:46This took us absolutely forever.
43:47We had to hand paint this for hours.
43:50Honestly, the color story.
43:51Very Gay Paint helped us out,
43:53and they also helped us with this mural.
43:56This is like a wormhole.
43:59Never in my life have I seen anything like this.
44:01Yes, that's happening!
44:03Oh, you like the wallpaper?
44:05Yes.
44:05Well, let me tell you a funny story.
44:07So, the first time we installed it,
44:09it came accidentally scaled too small,
44:12so the planets were like this big.
44:14It looked like children's clothing.
44:16I was like, uh, we have to fix this.
44:19But now it's nice and big.
44:20Yes, it makes you look smaller.
44:22Thank God.
44:23I've seen this room now,
44:24and I just want to live here.
44:25Can I move in, please?
44:28Look at these custom vanities we have in every room.
44:31This one's blue, for obvious reasons.
44:33Yes.
44:33Hey, look, when you want to look like a human being,
44:36you can put your makeup on here.
44:37Well, I don't have any makeup on whatsoever, my darling.
44:40Oh, okay.
44:42This is one of the most expensive pieces of furniture.
44:45It has this really fancy slow clothes.
44:48Rich.
44:49Rich.
44:50Luxury, my darling.
44:51Yes.
44:52Oh, I love.
44:54Yeah.
44:55Oh, my goodness, mate.
44:56Right.
44:56I'm getting in the pool.
44:58Yes, it's happening.
44:59I see you in here.
45:01I see you poised here putting your makeup on.
45:02I see you stepping out in that robe with blue skin.
45:04Like, good morning.
45:05Oh, my goodness, mate.
45:06I just love it.
45:07I want to prepare you.
45:10You're going to die when you see this show.
45:11Okay, I'm ready to die.
45:13Oh, my goodness, mate.
45:15Pause.
45:16Oh, wow.
45:18Oh, my God.
45:21It's fierce, right?
45:22I love it.
45:23Right, I'm getting in.
45:26Oh, my God.
45:27Love it.
45:28We could beam you up in there.
45:30Right, I'm going up.
45:30See you in a minute, my darling.
45:32I cannot believe the shower.
45:38This is absolutely gorgeous.
45:39I know.
45:40Get this.
45:40This is original tile from the 50s, and instead of replacing it, we just lacquered it with a glaze.
45:46This is like a bubblegum shower from heaven.
45:50Yeah, and then all brand new gold fixtures, gold doors, everything brand, brand, brand, brand, brand new, honey.
45:55I'm also obsessed with this tiny little water basin.
45:58Obsessed with it.
45:58This is so cute.
45:59It's like a flying saucer.
46:02This floor is literally, looks like, the sky on my home plan.
46:10It's absolutely gorgeous.
46:15Hello?
46:17Hi, Linda.
46:18I'm on the toilet, you little bitch.
46:20Right, call me back in a minute.
46:22Goodness me.
46:28I literally blend in with the bears.
46:30There's actually different light settings in this room.
46:35This room has something no other room has.
46:37The spaceships change color.
46:39Look, when you want to visit your home planet, we just...
46:42Oh, oh, oh my goodness me.
46:44Oh, bean me up, my darling.
46:47Yes.
46:48I think I finally found the environment that matches my world.
46:53It's like the first room that's in drag that you deserve.
46:57Yeah.
46:57I should do a show in here.
47:00It's perfect for your audience size.
47:02This is a room we could not cut corners in.
47:10If you're going to do sci-fi, you can't go cheap and do B-movie.
47:14You've got to do it right.
47:15You're right.
47:16It's just hard to look at the numbers and think where we're going to make it up.
47:19We'll look at it this way.
47:20In like eight weeks, this place is going to be open.
47:23People coming and staying and paying money.
47:25And we'll make that money back.
47:27We will be booked and blessed.
47:29So for now, I guess I just want to ask.
47:33David, will you make me the happiest drag queen in the world?
47:36And will you go over budget with me?
47:41Oh, my darling.
47:43Thank you, my dear.
47:43This is fabulous.
47:44Right, you go.
47:45I'm going to stay.
47:46Oh, okay.
47:51Thank God she's gone.
47:55Hi, is this room service?
48:00Yes, I'd like a lobster Thermador, please.
48:03But hold the cheese.
48:08Right past this hedge, hopefully, is...
48:10I hate surprises.
48:13Is this real?
48:19It's me.
48:20Oh, my God.
48:21Oh, hi.
48:23Now I'll never be a team model.
48:24My nose is broken.
48:25It's right here.
48:27Is this the best thing that's ever happened or what?
48:30Yes, literally it is.
