00:00Hi, thank you for this time, Dennis, and congratulations for this show.
00:05What was the spark?
00:07Oh, great.
00:08The impetus for starting the story, the match, was Kary Antholis,
00:15who was the producer on Blackbird with me.
00:18He had done a podcast called Firebug.
00:22It was about a serial arsonist who was also an arson investigator named John Orr.
00:27And he brought that to me and said, do you think there's a TV show in this?
00:31And I listened to the podcast and I said, I'm not really interested in a lot of what happened,
00:38but I love the pathology of the character.
00:40I love the psychological makeup of this guy.
00:42And this was a guy who was an arson investigator chasing an arsonist who was himself,
00:48who was also writing a book about an arson investigator chasing an arsonist
00:52with details in the book that only the real arsonist could have known.
00:56And I just thought, that's nuts.
00:59That's wonderful.
01:00I want to write about that type of character.
01:04And that's what I did.
01:07And the most surprising thing about the series, to me,
01:12are the constant twists and turns and the unpredictability of the end.
01:17Yes.
01:17As a writer, how do you achieve this result?
01:23We just embraced this idea in the writer's room very early on that this was a crazy, chaotic story
01:30that should mirror what fire can do.
01:34You know, fire can do a lot of good things.
01:36Fire can be a lot of things.
01:38It can be beautiful.
01:42It can be destructive.
01:44It can be repulsive.
01:47It can be sexy.
01:48It can warm you.
01:50It can kill you.
01:51It can do all of these things.
01:52And so we just thought, let's build our world that way.
01:55Let's let every character mirror that.
01:57And so all the characters in the show are kind of, they're psychologically a little bit demented, I would say, and complex.
02:10And we just wanted to continue playing with that.
02:13And that led to a lot of surprises that we didn't count on.
02:17That we, you know, and then all of a sudden we were like, oh my God, what if episode whatever ended that way?
02:23Well, that would be kind of fun.
02:24Didn't see that coming.
02:24And that just translates to the show.
02:29And the biggest challenge of writing such compelling and shady characters.
02:36Oh, I didn't find that.
02:37I don't find that challenging.
02:39I don't find, I'll tell you what I find challenging.
02:41If somebody said write a hero, I don't know how to do that.
02:45I've never done that in my life.
02:46I don't know how to write that type of guy.
02:48I don't, or write an absolute sniveling villain.
02:51I don't know how to do that.
02:53I don't know people like that.
02:54Most people are messy.
02:57Most human beings are messy.
02:59We can be good.
03:01We can be bad, sometimes in the same breath.
03:04I mean, it's very complex to understand that there can be not only bad in good people,
03:15but that there can be a lot of good in bad people.
03:18That's really hard to wrap your head around.
03:20And so I write about it.
03:22I write about it because I'm trying to figure it out.
03:24I don't ever come to a project with answers.
03:27I always just come with questions.
03:29Another thing I loved about the show was the opening credits with the song of Tom York.
03:35How did this collaboration came about?
03:38My music supervisor, Mary Ramos, had heard that Tom was a fan of Blackbird.
03:45So when we were looking for a theme, she reached out to Tom.
03:50Tom asked to see some scripts.
03:52I sent him some scripts.
03:53He asked to hear what I thought the show was about.
03:56I told him.
03:57A couple months later, he sends in that song.
03:59And the strangest moment was they said, now you can give him notes.
04:05And I was like, I'm not giving Tom York notes.
04:09I'm just going to say, great job.
04:11Can you do it?
04:12Yeah.
04:12That was it.
04:14And that's how we got that song.
04:17Okay.
04:18Thank you very much.
04:19And congratulations for this show and for Blackbird.
04:22Oh, thank you so very much.
04:23Thank you.
