Wilfredo Gomez defends his WBC Super Bantamweight Title against WBC Bantamweight champion Lupe Pintor on HBO Boxing

00:00:06On August 21st of 1981,
00:00:09Alfredo Gomez took on the late WBC Featherweight Champion,
00:00:12Salvador Sanchez.
00:00:14After 32 consecutive wins
00:00:16and 13 defenses of his Super Bantamweight crown,
00:00:19Gomez was declared a 2-1 favorite.
00:00:22But in the 8th round, after a series of vicious exchanges,
00:00:25Salvador Sanchez shattered Gomez's dream for a second title
00:00:29with a furious barrage of punches.
00:00:31Gomez had lost the Battle of the Little Giants.
00:00:35But Alfredo retained his Super Bantamweight title,
00:00:37and in March of 1982,
00:00:39he gave Juan Kid Meza a lesson on punching power.
00:00:43It was Gomez's 35th victory, all by knockout,
00:00:46and he was on track again
00:00:48as the best puncher, pound for pound, in the world.
00:00:54On June 11th, Gomez defended his crown on the undercard of Holmes Cooney.
00:00:58The opponent was Mexican Juan Antonio Lopez.
00:01:02Lopez was an 11-year veteran of the ring.
00:01:04After an awkward performance for 10 rounds,
00:01:07the champion finally caught up with Lopez
00:01:10with a devastating right hand.
00:01:12It came at 102 with a 10th.
00:01:14Yet another knockout.
00:01:19Lopez was a late substitute for this man,
00:01:22Roberto Rubaldino.
00:01:24And two months later,
00:01:25Gomez was in the ring with another overmatch contender.
00:01:27Gomez repeatedly pinned Rubaldino into the ropes,
00:01:30hammering him mercilessly.
00:01:32Finally, after the punishment became too much,
00:01:35the challenger's corner informed the referee
00:01:36that their battered warrior just couldn't go on.
00:01:4016 title defenses, all by knockout.
00:01:45And tonight, it's Wilfredo Gomez,
00:01:47Super Bantamweight Champion, Chapter 17.
00:01:51Lupe Pintor is the WBC Bantamweight Champion.
00:01:54He won that title in 1979.
00:01:58On February 22nd of 1981,
00:02:00he stepped into the ring to defend his title
00:02:02for the fifth time against Argentina's Jose Uzziga.
00:02:06The fight was dominated by the champion
00:02:08as he won a unanimous 15-round decision.
00:02:11Jose Uzziga joined a list of fighters
00:02:13who could not take the title from this Bantamweight Champion.
00:02:16Five months later,
00:02:26an eager Jovito Rengifo entered the ring
00:02:28to try and capture the champion's crown.
00:02:31It appeared the champion lacked
00:02:32his usual ferocity and aggressiveness.
00:02:35Rengifo opened dangerous cuts around Pintor's eyes
00:02:38and had looked for a time
00:02:39as though we might be crowning a new champion.
00:02:42But the champion rallied back,
00:02:44and in the eighth round,
00:02:45he floored Rengifo with a jab.
00:02:47He got up,
00:02:48but the referee said no more.
00:02:50And Lupe Pintor remained the champion.
00:02:53Two champions meeting tonight
00:02:55for something they both hold dear,
00:02:57a world title.

00:03:54Wilfredo Gomez-Lupe Pintor fight,
00:03:57and this one is no,
00:03:57there's no question about it.
00:03:58Right from round one,
00:03:59we expect him to just have
00:04:00that one another, Ray.
00:04:01Well, Brad,
00:04:01this is one of those rare fights
00:04:03that you nearly make a prediction.
00:04:05There will be
00:04:05early knockdowns
00:04:07or even knockout.
00:04:08Both guys possess
00:04:08great punching power.
00:04:09Gomez, we mentioned,
00:04:11was beaten earlier.
00:04:12He was really handled
00:04:12pretty well by Salvador Sanchez.
00:04:14Just when it was beginning
00:04:15to look like he was invincible,
00:04:16what was it like for you
00:04:17when you lost to Roberto Duran?
00:04:18Do you have to have
00:04:19a whole different mindset,
00:04:20get your head re-geared completely,
00:04:22start to think of yourself
00:04:23as a winner again?
00:04:24Yes, well, I tell you,
00:04:25very few fighters will admit it.
00:04:27There is that fear,
00:04:29and then you thought,
00:04:29they say,
00:04:30well, what happens
00:04:30if I lose again?
00:04:32That thought hands
00:04:32across everyone's mind.
00:04:35One of the things about that
00:04:37is it becomes a little easier
00:04:39for many fighters
00:04:40after losing their first fight
00:04:41to accept defeat.
00:04:44What made them appear
00:04:46so invincible
00:04:47and so tough
00:04:48while they were undefeated
00:04:49is refusing to accept
00:04:51the possibility of defeat.
00:04:52But once you've been there
00:04:53and maybe you find out,
00:04:55well, it isn't all that terrible.
00:04:57What is it like coming up in weight
00:04:59as Pintor is doing
00:05:00in this division now?
00:05:00Is it easier to do
00:05:01at the lower divisions like this
00:05:03rather than do it
00:05:04through the welterweight
00:05:05and middleweight divisions?
00:05:07Well, there's only
00:05:08a four-pound difference
00:05:09in weight,
00:05:10and I can't imagine
00:05:11that that means
00:05:12all of that that much.
00:05:14But that remains to be seen.
00:05:17In general, I think
00:05:18it's true that a puncher
00:05:21doesn't take his punch with him
00:05:23as he moves up in weight.
00:05:24That is to say,
00:05:25his punch is strongest
00:05:27in his natural division,
00:05:28in his natural division.
00:05:30And as he goes up in weight,
00:05:31the punch doesn't carry
00:05:33as much power.
00:05:34You look at Arthur McCanty,
00:05:35the referee.

00:05:58quite naturally,
00:05:59both guys are bangers.
00:06:01Pintor comes straight at you.
00:06:02Gomez,
00:06:03I think Gomez
00:06:03is a better technician
00:06:04in the ring
00:06:05than Pintor,
00:06:06although they still
00:06:07like to get an end
00:06:08and bang with each other.
00:06:10Pintor is the guy,
00:06:10of course,
00:06:11who was actually
00:06:11his last outing.
00:06:12He was not too impressive
00:06:13as he beat Jorge Lujan.
00:06:15He won it in 10 rounds.
00:06:16It was not a title fight
00:06:17and he really was
00:06:17not too impressive.
00:06:18But the fight before that
00:06:19against Xiong Hoon Lee
00:06:20in Los Angeles,
00:06:22he retained his WBC
00:06:23Bantamweight title
00:06:23by knocking him out
00:06:24in the fifth round.
00:06:25Going back to that,
00:06:26you had to go all the way
00:06:26back to February 22nd of 1981
00:06:28when he beat Jose Uzziga
00:06:30in a fight you saw
00:06:31just a couple of moments ago
00:06:32or at least parts of it.
00:06:33But he had to go 15 rounds
00:06:34and was not very impressive there.
00:06:35So for Pintor,
00:06:36he has been somewhat
00:06:37on again,
00:06:37off again.
00:06:39I look at Pintor
00:06:40as the kind of fighter
00:06:41who is a truth machine.
00:06:43He brings out the truth
00:06:44in his opponent
00:06:45and he's going to be there
00:06:47and if the opponent
00:06:48is really in top shape,
00:06:50really primed mentally
00:06:52and emotionally
00:06:52for the fight,
00:06:54then he can be beaten.
00:06:56But if he's not,
00:06:57if the weight situation
00:06:59has been too much
00:07:00for him or anything else,
00:07:01then Pintor,
00:07:03the truth comes out.
00:07:04Pintor comes into the ring

00:07:24He doesn't create,
00:07:26his greatness is
00:07:27in coming to the opponent

00:07:31is better than him
00:07:31and suddenly you see
00:07:33that this guy
00:07:33is going to be right there.
00:07:34That's what happened
00:07:35when he fought Zerotti
00:07:36and surprised everyone.

00:17:11to set the pace
00:17:13and that
00:17:15in order to impose
00:17:16his strength
00:17:17on Gomez
00:17:18he has to make him
00:17:19fight a busier fight.
00:17:21Well, we'll see

00:19:43try to get set
00:19:44Gomez will move back
00:19:45and throw him off.

00:19:50unsuccessful on both counts.
00:19:51Now those are very good

00:42:28Gomez was breathing rather heavily between rounds in his own corner, too.
00:42:32And now there is a puffiness over the left eye of Wilfredo Gomez that I have not seen before.
00:42:38That looks very close to opening up.
00:42:44I don't know if you can get a good look at the left eye, over the left eye of Wilfredo Gomez.
00:42:51It is definitely red and very close to opening up.
00:42:55So we'll see if Pintor can work on that as they put more tape on the glove of Wilfredo Gomez.

00:43:03Well, as you just said, he lands on that left eye of Gomez.

00:43:09The lead off right hands of Pintor will be very effective against Gomez because Gomez dropped that left.

00:43:28Every time that Pintor is able to get close enough to Gomez, he'll deliver a left or right uppercut.

00:43:41He has that kind of skin that's very, very durable.

01:07:32And, of course, the one loss he had was also a knockout at the hands of Salvador Sanchez.

01:08:40Physically speaking, you can only take with so much.
01:08:43But these fighters here, they went beyond that.

01:08:52I would feel quite certain that this is a precautionary measure.

01:08:59Right now, I think it's more so fatigue than just the physical punishment because there's been a lot of punches thrown, but I think it's more so fatigue.

01:09:52He is up now, and he appears to be okay, as you look once more at the second knockdown.
01:09:56Well, that replay, you can appreciate the power and the punch that sent Pintor to the canvas

01:10:25They just said, stay there.
01:10:26They looked into his eyes.
01:10:28And finally, they helped him up.

01:11:39And Wilfredo Gomez just went down and reached down.
01:11:42And I think, again, Larry made the analogy to your fight with Tommy Hearns, and I think that's exactly it.

01:11:50I feel that you must want it bad enough.
01:11:52And it comes from the gut.
01:11:53I mean, you have to bring it up.
01:11:55And fighters like Gomez, Pintour, they have that special ingredient.

01:12:04And the pace was up, as you mentioned, right from the first round.
01:12:06In the fourth round, the pace slowed just a little bit.
01:12:08Really, that was the only round in which it just wasn't bang, bang all the way.
01:12:12Well, it was such a fast pace in the very beginning, Brian.
01:12:15I mean, it had to be expected.
01:12:16Those guys had to coach one round or two to get their second win.
01:12:20But I mean, I was just so impressed with the fact that fast pace ended here in the 14th round.
