00:00Al-Qasneh or the treasury is one of the most elaborate temples in Petra, a city of the
00:04Nabataean kingdom inhabited by the Arabs in ancient times. As with most of the other
00:08buildings in this ancient town, this structure was carved out of a sandstone rock face.
00:13It is almost 40 meters high and intricately decorated with Corinthian capitals, friezes,
00:18figures and more. The treasury is crowned by a funerary urn, which according to local legend
00:22conceals a pharaoh's treasure. Although the original function is still a mystery,
00:26the treasury was probably constructed in the first century BC, however, in reality the urn represented
00:32a memorial for royalty. The treasury consists of two floors with a width of 25.30 meters and a height
00:38of 39.1 meters. The purpose of the treasury is unclear, some archaeologists believed it to be a
00:43temple, while others thought it was a place to store documents. However, the most recent excavation here
00:49has unearthed a graveyard beneath the treasury. The treasury comprises three chambers, a middle
00:54chamber with one on either side, the elaborately carved façade represents the Nabataean engineering
00:59genius.
