00:00Ephesus was an ancient port city whose well-preserved ruins are in modern-day Turkey.
00:04The city was once considered the most important Greek city and the most important trading center
00:09in the Mediterranean region. Throughout history, Ephesus survived multiple attacks and changed
00:14hands many times between conquerors. Sadly, Ephesus died, as you can tell, and was abandoned.
00:20The reason was silt build-up in the harbor, which eventually reached the point where no
00:23ship could reach the city. Without ships, trade died. Without trade, the city died.
00:29Ephesus is both fascinating and amazing and also quite beautiful. The site is very large and takes
00:34at least several hours to get around. Unlike many other protected archaeological sites, you can touch,
00:40stand on and walk through every part of the city. Highlights include a series of ancient public
00:45toilets, the Library of Celsus, the Bath of Varius, Hadrian's Temple, and the Praetonean.
00:51It is also home to the 25,000-seater Great Theater of Ephesus,
00:54the largest outdoor theater in the ancient world.
