Panchkula — Aqil Akhtar (33), son of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and ex-minister Razia Sultana, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his residence in Mansa Devi Complex on October 16, 2025. What initially appeared to be a case of overdose or natural death has now turned into a high-profile murder probe.
Posthumous videos and social media posts by Aqil have surfaced, alleging shocking family conflicts. In his recordings, Aqil accused his father of having an affair with his wife and claimed that his mother and sister conspired against him. He also stated that he feared being falsely implicated or killed. However, in later videos, Aqil retracted his statements, citing mental illness (schizophrenia) and apologizing to his family — before again expressing fear for his life.
Following a complaint by family acquaintance Shamsuddin Chaudhary from Malerkotla, Haryana Police have filed an FIR against Mohammad Mustafa, Razia Sultana, Aqil’s wife, and sister under charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an ACP-rank officer has been constituted. Police have seized Aqil’s mobile phone, message logs, and videos, which are now undergoing forensic verification. The viscera report is awaited to confirm the cause of death.
The case has sent shockwaves across Punjab’s political circles, with widespread public reaction over the alleged involvement of one of the state’s most influential families in a tragic domestic scandal.
