00:00Cuba, the Grandma Rebelde Festival concluded this Sunday in Havana,
00:03after three days of debates over the role of leftist journalism today,
00:07with delegations from over three countries.
00:10Telesur was there, and our colleague Belén de los Santos brings us more details.
00:16The founding of the Cuban newspapers Grandma and Juventud Rebelde
00:20was the reason for this international gathering in Havana.
00:24The festival Grandma Rebelde brought together Cuban and international media
00:27for three days to exchange experiences and rethink the challenges and needs
00:32of leftist journalism in the 21st century.
00:37Here we gather at the Cuban media.
00:39We have television, radio, and newspapers, not only those here from the capital,
00:44but also from the province who have come to this festival.
00:49Alongside us, there are also important international media from Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
00:55This is also an opportunity to connect and exchange with our audience, with our people.
01:02In the year leading up to the 100th anniversary of his birth,
01:06this first edition of the festival was dedicated to Fidel.
01:09His commitment to building rigorous journalism close to the workers
01:13continues to inspire communicators of the new generations.
01:17Fidel was a man who always took the truth as his primary weapon,
01:21the press as his rifle, a powerful force for the battles he fought.
01:25I always think back to March of 1952, when Batiste staged the coup.
01:29What did that young Fidel with so many revolutionary ideas,
01:32with such a strong desire to see a different Cuba do?
01:35He took to the press as a weapon.
01:37And what was his first shot?
01:39That powerful article titled,
01:40The days have been marked by cooperation and exchange.
01:47Representatives from media outlets from Venezuela, Brazil, Vietnam, and the United States
01:51gathered in the Cuban capital,
01:54aware that the challenging international context,
01:57marked by a coordinated advance of the right worldwide,
02:00demands greater solidarity among the international working class.
02:04The people of the United States don't want foreign wars.
02:09The people of the United States are having a hard time putting food on the table,
02:13are having a hard time finding quality schools for their children to go to,
02:18have, don't have medical care.
02:21You know, people in the U.S. are suffering
02:23because they can't go to the doctor when they're extremely ill.
02:26And yet, we see our government spending so much money
02:31to enact wars that the people of the U.S. don't even want to participate in
02:36and, in fact, are against.
02:37We have to exchange experiences and share to discover
02:41how to do communication and journalism in the 21st century,
02:46especially with so many challenges and so many threats
02:50to the experiences that we, independent and leftist organizations and media,
02:58defend so strongly.
02:59Three days filled with debate, exchange and conversation with one common goal,
03:05to strengthen existing alliances to narrate the present
03:09from the wisdom of our territories.
