Humanitarian convoy reaches Cuba after missing sailboats scare

Two sailboats carrying humanitarian aid from Mexico arrived safely in Havana on Saturday, after bad weather delayed the voyage and the vessels were briefly reported missing. The boats approached Havana Bay alongside a harbor pilot boat, passing Morro Castle and entering port before workers moored the vessel and crew members greeted Cuban authorities. According to the Mexican Navy, a maritime surveillance aircraft spotted the sailboats on Friday about 80 nautical miles, or 148 kilometers, northwest of Cuba after they had been reported missing on Thursday, and the crews said they were in good health. The vessels left Isla Mujeres in Mexico on March 21 and had been expected to arrive in Havana between March 24 and March 25. The two boats were part of the Nuestra America Convoy, which according to Reuters included nearly 300 organizations from more than 30 countries and sought to deliver food, medicine, baby formula and other supplies to Cuba.
