00:00Let's now go with our correspondent Belén de los Santos for more details about this event.
00:05Hello studios, how are you? We are here in Havana, Cuba.
00:10Once again we continue covering this festival, that's the Granma Rebelde Festival
00:15that joins here in the Cuban capital in order to first of all celebrate the 60th anniversary
00:22of the Granma newspaper and the Juventud Rebelde newspaper,
00:26iconic media outlets from the Cuban revolution, their experiences, the trajectory
00:32and also the present questions and debates about a revolutionary journalism.
00:36And at this moment I am joined by Hannah Gregg here in Telesur English
00:41from the People's Forum, Director of Culture and Communication.
00:45Thank you so much, Hannah, for joining us.
00:47Thank you. It's glad to be here.
00:49It's always a pleasure to have you here. Welcome to Havana.
00:53And please tell us, we've been debating about the present debates, the present questions
01:00that are upon us as media outlets in terms of just facing the current challenges
01:06and the current world in the States as it is.
01:10From a U.S.-based media outlet that's in full solidarity with the Global South,
01:15how are you solving, like what is the role that journalism has to play in this context?
01:20Well, it's a really important moment, as you said.
01:24There are so many new challenges.
01:26Every day things are changing, things are, and we're adapting every day as we see.
01:31The moment shifts and for us in this moment it is extremely important to be understanding the root
01:40of all of the challenges that we face.
01:42The working class is experiencing challenges that we know have existed for a long time,
01:50but the contradictions are becoming even more intense.
01:53You know, inside the U.S. itself, poverty is rampant.
01:58People can't afford food, can't afford their rent.
02:01And at the same time, the world has seen live on television the genocide in Palestine that has been so, so brutal
02:12and completely backed by the United States.
02:14And we're seeing more and more that young people especially have had their eyes opened to what the reality of U.S. imperialism is
02:23because of this brutal genocide on the Palestinian people.
02:27Right now we're in a particular situation in that young people whose eyes have been opened in this way
02:33are now seeing the brutality of U.S. imperialism all around the world.
02:37And so as media outlets, as, you know, the People's Forum is a cultural space, an educational space,
02:43and we think it's really important to be sharing the truth of what's happening,
02:48to be sharing the truth of what the U.S. government has its hands on.
02:55And what we're seeing is that the U.S. has supported genocides, supports wars abroad,
03:00and young people and really the people of the world are standing up against it.
03:06So we have to continue to tell those stories.
03:08Now, as you were saying, of course, such challenging times.
03:12And I think it was President Pedro from Colombia who was always coming back to this idea that Palestine
03:18and the genocide in Palestine was shifting everyone's minds in terms of the present world today,
03:24as you were just mentioning.
03:26And I was thinking we've seen an increased military aggression in the Caribbean from the United States.
03:33And one of the things that many regional leaders from the Caribbean are pointing out is the people of the United States do not support this.
03:39The people of the United States are not backing, do not want a new war and a new aggression on the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
03:47How are you from the United States just trying to create that narrative or getting to speak to that population?
03:55Absolutely. I mean, all we have to do is tell the truth, just like I was saying before.
04:01You're right. The people of the United States don't want foreign wars.
04:06The people of the United States are having a hard time putting food on the table,
04:11are having a hard time finding quality schools for their children to go to,
04:15The people of the United States don't have medical care.
04:19You know, people in the U.S. are suffering because they can't go to the doctor when they're extremely ill.
04:23And yet, we see our government spending so much money to enact wars that the people of the U.S. don't even want to participate in,
04:33and in fact are against. And so, really what it is, is highlighting the fact that the government is doing completely the opposite of what the people want,
04:42and in fact are hurting the people in the process, hurting the people of the United States,
04:47because we just want peace, and we want to be in solidarity with the people of the world.
04:52No one wants to be going to war and enacting this ridiculous violence on other people.
04:59We need rights and dignity, and we need to support people who are living inside the country as well.
05:06Well, if Palestine taught us something as well, is that the internal pressure from those people standing up to the different governments
05:14really played a role in terms of just restricting those violent actions at a moment in time.
05:21They could put a limit, and it had to do with the demonstrations, the increasing pressure of people
05:27just showing their governments that they were not in support.
05:30So, let's hope that something like that can happen as well with the escalation in the Caribbean and Latin America.
05:36Thank you so much, Hannah, for joining us once again.
05:40It's been a pleasure to have you.
05:41So, this is once again one more thing that we are going over in this Gran Marrebelde Festival here.
05:48Thinking and sharing experiences with different media outlets, how are we doing journalism with a Global South perspective
05:57and a future horse in mind.
05:59We go back to studios now.
