Welcome everyone to my little mystery section. Did you ever have a recurring dream about someone in your life and it wasn't good. Maybe you just remember bits and pieces of the dream but when waking up, you feel a sense of foreboding. I know, I have. Well in today's movie from 1945 called Strange Illusion, we have our friend Paul Cartwright. Now Paul lives with his widowed mother Virginia. While away on vacation Paul has a strange dream about his father, who was once a Judge, now deceased. So Paul rushes home, only to find that his mother now has a new beau named Brett Curtis. Mmmm, is this the man from his dreams. Can Paul connect the dots from his dreams or is he going off the deep end, just missing his father. Well before you go to sleep, you will just have to watch to find out. Staring in this dreamy tale we have...James Lydon as Paul Cartwright, Sally Eilers as his mother Virginia, Jayne Hazard as Dorothy Cartwright, Warren William as Brett, Regis Toomey as Dr. Vincent, Charles Arnt as Professor Muhlbach, George H. Reed as Benjamin, Jimmy Clark as George, Mary McLeod as Lydia, Pierre Watkin as Armstrong, John "Perry White" Hamilton as Mr. Allen and a few more. So let's make some Dreamsicle cocktails, maybe make some Angel Dream Cake and enjoy. Also I have to say I really like the art deco poster that they made for this film. Thanks so much for stopping by and watching.

00:00:00The End
00:00:30Oh, my God.
00:01:00Oh, my God.
00:01:29My name was Judge Albert Godwright, once lieutenant governor of the state.
00:01:34He was killed two years ago in a mysterious accident.
00:01:38We were not only father and son, but friends.
00:01:44The shock of his violent death still haunts my mind.
00:01:47My nights are troubled by strange dreams.
00:01:49Albert, Albert, you've come back to me.
00:01:56I'm happy again.
00:01:58Mother, no.
00:01:59This man isn't father.
00:02:00I thought my happiness was gone forever, but you've come back to me.
00:02:04Mother, listen to me, mother.
00:02:06Don't waste your breath, Paul.
00:02:07She can't hear you.
00:02:09I am your father now.
00:02:11You're not.
00:02:12You're not my father.
00:02:14Dorothy.
00:02:16Dorothy.
00:02:17What is it, Paul?
00:02:18Dorothy, speak to mother.
00:02:20Tell her he isn't father.
00:02:21Tell her.
00:02:22Of course he is.
00:02:23Look at the lovely bracelet he gave me.
00:02:25Isn't it beautiful?
00:02:27It has a lion's head.
00:02:29Dear father, thank you.
00:02:32Thank you so much.
00:02:36Train.
00:02:41Stop the train!
00:02:42That's what I've been waiting for a while.
00:02:54My father.
00:02:56The train!
00:02:58You!
00:03:00Mother!
00:03:02Mother!
00:03:03Mother!
00:03:04Paul.
00:03:06Paul, wake up!
00:03:10It's you, Doc.
00:03:12The way you were yelling, I thought a wildcat had broken in.
00:03:15What's the trouble?
00:03:16Nightmare?
00:03:17Yeah.
00:03:18What a nightmare.
00:03:20Well, you get up and dress.
00:03:21I'll go out and get breakfast started.
00:03:22All right.
00:03:28Bye-bye.
00:03:30Bye-bye.
00:03:32Bye-bye.
00:03:35Bye-bye.
00:03:41File, too, Paul.
00:03:42Here's your breakfast.
00:03:43Doc, do you remember what you said once in psychology class about the phenomena of dreams
00:04:00foreshadowing future events?
00:04:02Yes.
00:04:03But to healthy-minded people, a dream is just a dream.
00:04:07Come on, Paul.
00:04:08There's nothing like an early start for good fishing.
00:04:11I'm going to go home today.
00:04:12Home?
00:04:13My, Paul, what's the matter?
00:04:14I'm worried about Mother.
00:04:15Now, look, you're not going to let a dream spoil our outing, are you?
00:04:18Why do you suppose Mother didn't want me home for the holiday?
00:04:20Oh, she probably had some reason.
00:04:22Now, get on with your breakfast.
00:04:23I'd like to tell you about this nightmare I had, Doc.
00:04:26Well, all right, if it'll make you feel better.
00:04:28Let's finish our regs, and I'll get the tackle, and you can tell me on the way down.
00:04:32Let's go.
00:04:33Let's go.
00:04:34Let's go.
00:04:35Let's go.
00:04:36Let's go.
00:04:37Let's go.
00:04:38I'll just go.
00:04:39Now, let's go.
00:04:40Let's go.
00:04:41I'll take a look at my regs, and I'll get the tackle, and you can tell me on the way
00:04:44down.
00:04:45Hmm.
00:04:46He said, you have hallucinations.
00:04:47Come with me.
00:04:48I'll take care of you.
00:04:49And he held onto my arm.
00:04:50That was when you woke me up.
00:04:51Quite an extraordinary dream, it easily explained.
00:04:53At the inquest after your father's death, you remember,
00:04:55the engineer on the train testified that he caught a glimpse
00:04:58of the Acme Trucking Company's sign as the truck pulled away.
00:05:02Although nothing's been seen of it since,
00:05:04it still remains the only clue to the unsolved mystery.
00:05:07Naturally, it will be impressed upon your mind.
00:05:10Oh, yes, but...
00:05:11And the Schumann Concerto was your father's favorite composition,
00:05:14if I recall correctly.
00:05:16But it all seems so real, and I remember every detail.
00:05:19The bracelet, the abandoned farm buildings,
00:05:21and the things this man said, like,
00:05:24it's just what I've been waiting for,
00:05:26and the terrible danger to Mother and Dorothy.
00:05:29Forget it, Paul. You've been working too hard at school.
00:05:33This is a perfect way to relax.
00:05:36Hey, they're jumping like crickets. Come on.
00:05:51Here, there.
00:05:56Hi, Mac.
00:05:57What are you doing down here, spying on us, you old fox?
00:05:59I mean, it's a good idea.
00:06:01This is a good idea of my life.
00:06:03So guys, what are you doing?
00:06:04What are you doing down here?
00:06:05Spying on us?
00:06:06Sure, that's my roggin'.
00:06:08You'd better have your licenses.
00:06:10How are you biting?
00:06:11Great.
00:06:12What are you doing down here?
00:06:13Spying on us, you old fox?
00:06:15Sure, that's my rocket.
00:06:16You'd better have your licenses.
00:06:17How are you biting?
00:06:19Great!
00:06:22A letter for you, Paul.
00:06:23OK.
00:06:38It's from the Wainfield Trust.
00:06:39Been forwarded up here from the school, and I figured it might be important, so I brought it up to you.
00:06:43Oh, thanks, Max.
00:06:44No trouble. If there's any answer, I can mail it for you over in the village.
00:06:46Well, there's no answer. It's a letter from my father.
00:06:49Huh?
00:06:50Say, you're not pulling my leg, are you, Paul?
00:06:52Oh, no, Max. Dad left a series of letters with the office of his estate. I get one every few months.
00:06:57Well, I'll be gone.
00:06:58Leave it to the judge to think of something like that.
00:07:01Uncanny smart that man was.
00:07:04Well, you want to read that sort of private.
00:07:07Good fishing, huh?
00:07:08Fine, Max.
00:07:09How long have you figured out staying up here?
00:07:10Oh, Doc?
00:07:11Yes, Paul.
00:07:12Would you mind coming over a minute, please?
00:07:13Now, so long, boys.
00:07:14Goodbye, Max.
00:07:15Goodbye, Max.
00:07:16What is it, Paul?
00:07:17I received one of Dad's letters.
00:07:18I'd like to read part of it to you.
00:07:19Go ahead.
00:07:20It will be your responsibility as the man of the family to protect your mother and Dorothy
00:07:22by being constantly vigilant of their associates. I have always guarded your mother, who is
00:07:27so much younger than I for it to be my mother, to protect your mother and Dorothy by being
00:07:33constantly vigilant of their associates. I have always guarded your mother, who is so
00:07:40It will be your responsibility as the man of the family
00:07:43to protect your mother and Dorothy
00:07:45by being constantly vigilant of their associates.
00:07:48I have always guarded your mother,
00:07:50who is so much younger than I,
00:07:52for in my experience I've had ample opportunity
00:07:54to observe the cunning of unscrupulous imposters.
00:08:00Fits right in with your dream, doesn't it?
00:08:02Curious coincidence.
00:08:04Oh, I hate to ruin your trip, Doc,
00:08:06but I'd really like to go home.
00:08:08All right, Paul, it wouldn't do you any good anyhow
00:08:11with this worry on your mind,
00:08:12and if everything's all right, we can come back.
00:08:14Meantime, I can have a nice little visit with my sister.
00:08:16Let's get our stuff.
00:08:30Thanks a lot, Doc.
00:08:31You're welcome, Paul.
00:08:33You can reach me at my sister's.
00:08:34Okay, so long, Doc.
00:08:36Hello, Ben.
00:08:37Mr. Paul, well, this is a surprise.
00:08:40Oh, I got kind of homesick.
00:08:41How's everything, Ben?
00:08:42Well, everything's about the same so far.
00:08:46Where's my mother?
00:08:47Mrs. Virginia, she went over to the club
00:08:49to have lunch with Mr. Curtis.
00:08:51Curtis?
00:08:52Well, who's he?
00:08:54Well, he's been coming around here every day
00:08:56for the past month.
00:08:57You mean he's been coming around to see Mother?
00:08:59He sure ain't been coming to see me, no, sir.
00:09:02What's he like, Ben?
00:09:04Well, he's a fine-looking man.
00:09:06Nice talking, too.
00:09:07But that ain't exactly my place to venture an opinion, no, sir.
00:09:11You don't like him?
00:09:12Well, you see how it is.
00:09:14Being with the judge so many years,
00:09:16I got to know just what folks he like and don't like.
00:09:19And I kind of suspect this Mr. Curtis
00:09:21wouldn't be on the list, no, sir.
00:09:23I see.
00:09:27But don't you take no preconjected ideas from me, Mr. Paul.
00:09:31Tain constitution, like the judge used to say,
00:09:34to exert undue influence on the bench, no, sir.
00:09:37That's right, Ben.
00:09:39I better take your bag upstairs.
00:09:40Should I run you a bath, sir?
00:09:42Well, never mind.
00:09:43I'll just take a shower.
00:09:46Yes, sir.
00:09:51I'll just take a shower.
00:09:54I'm coming back.
00:10:03Thanks, Ben.
00:10:15Hello, George.
00:10:16Yeah?
00:10:18Well, for guys' sakes.
00:10:20Well, where are you?
00:10:22Well, why didn't you let me know?
00:10:25Come on over.
00:10:26I want to talk to you.
00:10:27It's confidential.
00:10:29OK.
00:10:36Miss Paul's home.
00:10:37Paul?
00:10:38What brought him home?
00:10:39Well, he said he got homesick.
00:10:41He's up in his room.
00:10:50Oh, darling.
00:10:54Hello, Princess.
00:10:57Didn't you like the fishing?
00:10:58Oh, it was all right.
00:10:59But I wanted to come home.
00:11:01Well, I had so many engagements, dear.
00:11:03Of course, if I'd realized that...
00:11:05Unclean Mrs. Cartwright.
00:11:07Where's the Romeo?
00:11:09Benjamin told you.
00:11:11Well, his name is Brett Curtis.
00:11:13And he's most charming.
00:11:15You know, I haven't even been slightly interested in any man since your father died.
00:11:19But I must admit, I like this one.
00:11:21You'll meet him tonight at dinner.
00:11:22And I want you to like him, too.
00:11:29Are you sure he's all right?
00:11:31Of course he is.
00:11:32Everyone finds him fascinating.
00:11:34He's amusing and interesting.
00:11:36He's been everywhere.
00:11:37And he's most attractive.
00:11:38You know, in some ways, he reminds me of your father, except he's younger.
00:11:42Oh, don't look so worried.
00:11:45Well, you're my responsibility now, you know.
00:11:48Paul.
00:11:49You know how lonely I've been.
00:11:50Yes, I understand that.
00:11:51Darling.
00:11:52I've got to change.
00:11:53I hope you have a decent suit to wear.
00:11:55I've been bragging about how handsome you are.
00:11:57I'll probably slide down the banister in my pajamas.
00:11:58If you dare.
00:11:59Oh, excuse me, Mrs. Cartwright.
00:12:00Hello, George.
00:12:01How's Lydia?
00:12:02Poorly, ma'am.
00:12:03Poorly.
00:12:04But she'll be all right when she finds out Paul's home.
00:12:05I'll probably slide down the banister in my pajamas.
00:12:07If you dare.
00:12:08Oh, excuse me, Mrs. Cartwright.
00:12:09Hello, George.
00:12:10How's Lydia?
00:12:11Poorly, ma'am.
00:12:12Poorly.
00:12:13But she'll be all right when she finds out Paul's home.
00:12:14Hiya, Paul.
00:12:15You old guy.
00:12:16Gosh, I'm glad to see you.
00:12:17What's all this confidential business?
00:12:18How about this guy my mother's got in tow?
00:12:19Oh, him.
00:12:20Well, what gives?
00:12:21Does he rate?
00:12:22By me, strictly poison.
00:12:23Dorothy and I are washed up on account of that guy.
00:12:25Oh, George, says she.
00:12:26You're so crude and carol.
00:12:27Why can't you be more like Brett?
00:12:28Smooth and sophisticated.
00:12:29Women.
00:12:30They get on my nerves.
00:12:31Sounds like a purely personal reaction, George.
00:12:32I'm after facts.
00:12:33Is he solid?
00:12:34Well, all I know is what I hear at Keyhole's.
00:12:35Mom and Dad say he's a cosmopolitan.
00:12:36But for my dough, he's a first class.
00:12:37Oh.
00:12:38Hello, sir.
00:12:39I'm sorry.
00:12:40I'm sorry.
00:12:41I'm sorry.
00:12:42I'm sorry.
00:12:43I'm sorry.
00:12:44I'm sorry.
00:12:45I'm sorry.
00:12:46I'm sorry.
00:12:47I'm sorry.
00:12:48I'm sorry.
00:12:49I'm sorry.
00:12:50I'm sorry.
00:12:51I'm sorry.
00:12:52I'm sorry.
00:12:53I'm sorry.
00:12:54I'm sorry.
00:12:55I'm sorry.
00:12:56I'm sorry.
00:12:57Hello, sis.
00:12:58Hiya, small fry.
00:12:59Hello.
00:13:00Well, what happened to the fishing trip, Paul?
00:13:02Canceled on account of family affection.
00:13:04What's with this Curtis I've been hearing about?
00:13:06If you've been listening to George, you can just ignore it.
00:13:09Brett's positively out of this world.
00:13:11And the princess is mad about him.
00:13:13Yeah, and so am I.
00:13:14Well, at least he has manners.
00:13:16Which is more than I can say for some people.
00:13:18Oh.
00:13:19Of course, it must be quite a shock to realize
00:13:21that one simply doesn't measure up to civilized standards.
00:13:25You see what I mean?
00:13:26You know how we used to get along.
00:13:27Now where am I?
00:13:28Oh, take it easy, George.
00:13:29It may blow over.
00:13:30No, she'll never be the same.
00:13:31And I'm too old to change.
00:13:32There he is now.
00:13:33Brett, how are you?
00:13:34For me?
00:13:35Oh, you're too divine, Brett, really.
00:13:36Bring some flowers to the big droop.
00:13:37You'll simply turn my head.
00:13:38Turn her head?
00:13:39I'd like to wring her neck.
00:13:40She thinks he's a great wit.
00:13:41But nothing I see as funny anymore.
00:13:42How about staying to dinner, George?
00:13:43I don't feel like facing this alone.
00:13:44Okay.
00:13:45I'll call up home.
00:13:46You'll have to lend me a tie.
00:13:47Oh, sure.
00:13:48I'll try to get home.
00:13:49Well, I'll do it, George.
00:13:50Come on.
00:13:51I'll do it.
00:13:52All right, George.
00:13:53And I'll do it.
00:13:54I'll do it.
00:13:55You'll do it.
00:13:56I'll do it.
00:13:57Oh, there he goes.
00:13:58I'll do it.
00:13:59I'll do it.
00:14:00How about staying to dinner, George?
00:14:01I don't feel like facing this alone.
00:14:02Okay.
00:14:03I'll call up home.
00:14:04You'll have to lend me a tie.
00:14:05Oh, you'll have to lend me a tie.
00:14:06Oh, sure.
00:14:14Gosh, do I look all right?
00:14:15Maybe I should have gone home and changed.
00:14:17You'll do.
00:14:19How nice you both look.
00:14:24Paul, this is Brett.
00:14:27How do you do?
00:14:27I'm glad to know you, Paul.
00:14:29Of course you know George Hanover.
00:14:31Hello, George.
00:14:34I've been hearing quite a lot about you.
00:14:36Mother and Dorothy have been giving you quite a build-up, too.
00:14:39Well, I hope you won't hold it against me.
00:14:42I feel as if I'd met you somewhere before.
00:14:44That's because Brett looks like Father.
00:14:46Oh, I don't think so.
00:14:49Except maybe his nose a little.
00:14:51Thanks, Paul.
00:14:52I'd rather not look like anybody but myself.
00:14:54Paul is a great deal like his father.
00:14:57I understand you have his talent, too.
00:14:59Maybe, a speck of it.
00:15:01I've been reading one of his books on criminology.
00:15:04My friend, Professor Muehlbach, the psychiatrist,
00:15:06recommended it to me.
00:15:07The professor thinks your father had a brilliant mind.
00:15:10Well, Father's best book was never completed.
00:15:13I hope I'll be able to finish it for him someday.
00:15:15I knew you two would like each other.
00:15:17Dinner served, ma'am.
00:15:21Dorothy?
00:15:22You know what?
00:15:23Paul, I have everything you want to do.
00:15:25Oh, it's very nice to meet you.
00:15:27You're very beautiful.
00:15:28I thought that was really easy.
00:15:34You don't mean to tell me you like him.
00:15:36I didn't say I liked him.
00:15:37I just said I could see why Mother likes him.
00:15:39Yeah, but does Dorothy have to drool over him like a goon?
00:15:42Oh, Dorothy's nothing but a child.
00:15:44Child nothing.
00:15:45She's a first-class flirt.
00:15:47The way she hangs on that guy's words.
00:15:49Honest, Paul, it sickens me.
00:15:51Pure jealousy.
00:15:53Me?
00:15:53Jealous?
00:15:54Sad.
00:15:58Gosh, that's right.
00:16:00Maybe I am.
00:16:05Paul, look.
00:16:06It was in the box that the corsage Brett gave me.
00:16:09Isn't it beautiful?
00:16:10It's the lion's head from India.
00:16:12Brett has such divine taste.
00:16:15Well, don't you like it?
00:16:17Nice girls aren't supposed to take jewelry from strange men.
00:16:20He's not a strange man.
00:16:29Paul.
00:16:30What's wrong?
00:16:32You're as white as a sheet.
00:16:33I feel...
00:16:35Oh, my God.
00:16:36I'll get Mother.
00:16:37Mother!
00:16:38Oh, Martin.
00:16:39What's the matter, Virginia?
00:16:40What happened?
00:16:40I don't know.
00:16:41Dorothy said he simply keeled over.
00:16:43When he came to, he babbled something about a dream and wanting to see you.
00:16:46He seemed all right at dinnertime.
00:16:47Let me see him.
00:16:48What's the matter, Virginia? What happened?
00:16:50I don't know. Dorothy said he simply keeled over.
00:16:53When he came to, he babbled something about a dream and wanting to see you.
00:16:56He seemed all right at dinner time.
00:16:58Let me see him.
00:17:01Feel better?
00:17:03Say, you know, I had an uncle once. He used to get fits.
00:17:06He had to put a spoon in his mouth.
00:17:10Hello, Doc.
00:17:12Well, young man, what's this all about?
00:17:14Darling, what is wrong?
00:17:15Nothing, mother.
00:17:17If you don't mind, though, I'd like to talk to Dr. Vincent alone.
00:17:21Well, I guess I'll barge along home then.
00:17:23Hope you feel better, chum.
00:17:24Well, I'll be okay. See you tomorrow.
00:17:26Right.
00:17:28You look feverish.
00:17:30Oh, I just had kind of a mental shock.
00:17:34Remember the dream I told you about this morning, Doc?
00:17:37Yes.
00:17:38The part about Dorothy and the bracelet?
00:17:40Yes.
00:17:41Well, there's a man mother's seriously interested in and...
00:17:44Who is this man, Paul?
00:17:46And he did give Dorothy a bracelet.
00:17:48But, Paul...
00:17:49And it was in a corsage.
00:17:50And there was the music.
00:17:51The same music.
00:17:52The Schumann Concerto.
00:17:53This may sound kind of crazy, Doc, but...
00:17:59That dream is beginning to happen.
00:18:02Now, wait a minute, Paul.
00:18:03Nothing has actually happened.
00:18:05The only similarity to the dream is the bracelet.
00:18:07And that could be a coincidence.
00:18:08You know, Dorothy's very fond of trinkets.
00:18:09And anybody who knew that might buy her a bracelet.
00:18:11As for the music, it's probably sitting on the piano.
00:18:14I wouldn't worry too much about it, son.
00:18:16Have you told your mother about this dream?
00:18:18No.
00:18:19Mother thinks I've got too much imagination.
00:18:20Besides, she's gone overboard for this Curtis.
00:18:21And you can't talk to people when they feel like that about someone.
00:18:25You're pretty young to know that.
00:18:26Well, I felt the same way about a girl last year.
00:18:27Nobody could tell me anything until I found it out for myself.
00:18:28And you may be entirely wrong about this man.
00:18:32Now, the best thing to do is to find out all we can about him.
00:18:37I'm sorry, Paul.
00:18:38and talk to people when they feel like that about someone.
00:18:42You're pretty young to know that.
00:18:44I felt the same way about a girl last year.
00:18:46Nobody could tell me anything until I found it out for myself.
00:18:49And you may be entirely wrong about this man.
00:18:52Now, the best thing to do is to find out all we can about him.
00:18:56Suppose you and I go down and see Bill Allen tomorrow.
00:18:59A banker doesn't usually take people at face value.
00:19:02We'll let him investigate.
00:19:05That's an idea.
00:19:06Oh, and Doc.
00:19:08When you go downstairs, I wish you'd drop in and meet Curtis.
00:19:12I'd like to find out what you think about him.
00:19:15All right, Paul. Now stop worrying.
00:19:25Come on, Paul. Mr. Allen's a busy man.
00:19:28Thank you, Mr. Allen.
00:19:29Goodbye, Paul.
00:19:30Goodbye, Bill.
00:19:32Doctor.
00:19:38Good morning, Curtis.
00:19:39Good morning, Curtis.
00:19:40Good morning, Dr.
00:19:41Hello, Paul.
00:19:41How are you feeling?
00:19:42Oh, I'm fine, thanks.
00:19:43You certainly gave us a scare last evening.
00:19:44I hope you've laid down the lot with him, Doctor.
00:19:45What he needs is more of fresh air and exercise.
00:19:47Well, you can't pass exams on fresh air.
00:19:48Not in my school.
00:19:49No, Paul takes his studies very seriously.
00:19:50Come along, Paul.
00:19:51Good morning, Curtis.
00:19:52Good morning, Curtis.
00:19:53Good morning.
00:19:54You don't suppose he followed us here?
00:19:56Oh, come now, Paul.
00:19:57The man banks there.
00:19:58Aren't you convinced that Allen knows what he's talking about?
00:19:59My intuition isn't.
00:20:00I take it easy on that intuition business, son.
00:20:01It can become an obsession, you know.
00:20:02Well, if you don't mind, Doc, I think I'll walk around.
00:20:03You still have to do something.
00:20:04No, Paul takes his studies seriously.
00:20:07No, Paul takes his studies very seriously.
00:20:08No, Paul takes his studies very seriously.
00:20:10No, Paul takes his studies very seriously.
00:20:11No, Paul takes his studies very seriously.
00:20:13No, Paul.
00:20:14No, Paul takes his studies very seriously.
00:20:15Come along, Paul.
00:20:16Good morning, Curtis.
00:20:17You don't suppose he followed us here?
00:20:20Oh, come now, Paul.
00:20:21The man banks there.
00:20:22I take it easy on that intuition business, son.
00:20:25It can become an obsession, you know.
00:20:27Well, if you don't mind, Doc, I think I'll walk home.
00:20:30Well, that's a splendid idea.
00:20:31Do some deep breathing and try and rid your mind of Curtis.
00:20:40Hi there, doctor.
00:20:42Going anywhere near the club?
00:20:43I go right by there. Hop in.
00:20:45Oh, thanks.
00:20:46It's a nuisance to find a taxi when you want one.
00:20:49I don't drive myself.
00:20:50That's unusual. I thought everybody drove these days.
00:20:54You know, I was in rather a bad accident when I was a youngster,
00:20:57and it made such an impression on me that I never learned to drive.
00:21:01Where's Paul?
00:21:02Oh, he decided to walk home for the exercise.
00:21:16Hiya, Paul. You doing okay?
00:21:18Sure. What gives?
00:21:20Well, the gang's here, and we're going down to the river to watch a boat race.
00:21:22I kind of thought you'd like to come along.
00:21:24Hello, Lydia.
00:21:25Oh, Cartwright!
00:21:27Well, if you aren't the absolute limit,
00:21:29not letting me know a thing about coming home.
00:21:38Ben, what are you doing with that picture?
00:21:40Miss Virginia wants it taken up to the study.
00:21:42Why?
00:21:43I couldn't say.
00:21:48Where's Mother?
00:21:49Downtown.
00:21:50She'll be back for lunch.
00:21:56Come on, let's go.
00:21:57We don't want to get down there after it's all over.
00:21:58Okay, come on.
00:21:59Come on, Lydia.
00:22:00Okay, gang, I guess we can all get in my car.
00:22:02We can all squeeze in.
00:22:04Yeah, that's all right.
00:22:05Come on, Paul.
00:22:06Yeah, I'll see you later.
00:22:12Paul.
00:22:14Are you deliberately trying to avoid me?
00:22:17Because if you are, I'd just as soon you come right out and say so.
00:22:21No, I'm not, Lydia.
00:22:22I just don't feel like going, that's all.
00:22:24I'm sorry, sir.
00:22:45I sure did hate to move the judge out of his place.
00:22:49Well, maybe this is where he'd rather be, Ben.
00:22:52He spent most of his time up here anyway.
00:22:55Yes, sir.
00:22:57He looks so alive.
00:23:00Almost as if he could speak.
00:23:02I wished he could.
00:23:11Ben, when is Curtis coming here again?
00:23:14He's coming to lunch.
00:23:16I want you to do something for me.
00:23:18Anything you say.
00:23:19When you take his glass off the table, don't touch it.
00:23:22Use a napkin and put it aside.
00:23:24You know what I want, Ben.
00:23:26Yes, sir.
00:23:26Oh, and Ben, I'd like a sandwich and a glass of milk up here, please.
00:23:30Yes, sir.
00:23:30Do you have the keys to the files?
00:23:36Thanks, Ben.
00:23:37I want you to do something for me.
00:23:42I want you to do something for me.
00:23:44I want you to do something for me.
00:23:46I want you to do something for me.
00:23:47I want you to do something for me.
00:23:48I want you to do something for me.
00:23:49I want you to do something for me.
00:23:50I want you to do something for me.
00:23:51I want you to do something for me.
00:23:52I want you to do something for me.
00:23:53I want you to do something for me.
00:23:54I want you to do something for me.
00:23:55I want you to do something for me.
00:23:56I want you to do something for me.
00:23:57I want you to do something for me.
00:23:58I want you to do something for me.
00:23:59I want you to do something for me.
00:24:00I want you to do something for me.
00:24:01I want you to do something for me.
00:24:02I want you to do something for me.
00:24:03Prominent in unsolved crimes is the record of Claude Barrington, an amazingly clever
00:24:21and dangerous individual.
00:24:23He was suspected of innumerable crimes, including attacks on young girls, even murder.
00:24:29Yet the police had never been able to find sufficient evidence to warrant his arrest.
00:24:36His quick disappearances, the failure of witnesses to identify him, the lack of fingerprints or
00:24:42photographs, indicated a marked talent for crime.
00:24:48Suspicion first fell upon Barrington when, in 1932, he married a wealthy young widow,
00:24:54Cecilia Gordon, who was drowned within six months of their marriage.
00:24:59Leaving him a substantial legacy.
00:25:03However, no evidence could be found to prove that Barrington was in the vicinity at the time of her death.
00:25:13Paul, darling, what are you doing up here?
00:25:19Reading up on something in Dad's files.
00:25:21It's such a lovely day. You should be outdoors.
00:25:23I'm sorry about moving the picture. I want to change things in the living room. It's so old-fashioned. I want to brighten it up a bit.
00:25:36It's all right, Mother.
00:25:41Paul, are you going to make things difficult?
00:25:43I haven't said anything.
00:25:45It isn't what you say. It's your attitude.
00:25:46It's your attitude. Why don't you like Brett?
00:25:50I just don't want you to make a mistake, that's all.
00:25:54How much do you know about him?
00:25:57Everything. He's told me all about himself.
00:26:00Paul, why are you so mistrustful?
00:26:03I received one of Dad's letters yesterday.
00:26:06Maybe you'd better read it.
00:26:16Poor Albert.
00:26:20He saw so much of crime and wickedness, he was bound to become overcautious.
00:26:25Now I understand why you're so anxious, dear.
00:26:29What is it you want to know?
00:26:31Has Curtis ever been married before?
00:26:33No, he's a bachelor.
00:26:35He was going to be married a few years ago, but the girl drowned shortly before the wedding.
00:26:40Brett was terribly broken up about it, of course.
00:26:43She was drowned?
00:26:44It's quite a tragedy. She was so young.
00:26:51Well, Paul, anything else?
00:26:55Where does he get his income?
00:26:57Oh, he owns mines and things.
00:27:00I had Mr. Allen check into all that.
00:27:02You see, I'm not as irresponsible as you think I am.
00:27:05You're not going to marry him for a while yet, are you?
00:27:08I don't know, Paul.
00:27:11I think you should wait.
00:27:12Paul, I don't want to make you unhappy.
00:27:14But that's one thing I must decide for myself.
00:27:17You mean, you're going to marry him right away?
00:27:20I may.
00:27:20But you can't.
00:27:21You've got to give me time to...
00:27:22Give you time?
00:27:24For what?
00:27:25Well, to...
00:27:26to get better acquainted with him.
00:27:30Darling, you'll be going off to school soon.
00:27:32Your life will be occupied with other things for years.
00:27:36Paul, try to understand.
00:27:38Try to be fair.
00:27:39Please.
00:27:40For my sake.
00:27:44All right.
00:27:45That's better.
00:27:46You'll be down for lunch?
00:27:47No, Benjamin's bringing my lunch up here.
00:27:49I'll be down later.
00:27:50Maybe you can play some tennis with Brett.
00:27:51He plays an excellent game.
00:27:53If you'd just give him a chance to be himself,
00:27:55you two would probably be the best of friends in no time.
00:27:58I've got to go now.
00:28:01Don't work too hard, darling.
00:28:02I've got to go now.
00:28:32I've got to go now.
00:29:04Oh, you wretch!
00:29:06That did it!
00:29:10I'm lucky I've got two games.
00:29:11By y'all, lady.
00:29:21Hello, Paul.
00:29:22How are you feeling?
00:29:24Okay.
00:29:24How was the boat race?
00:29:25Keen.
00:29:26The Blue Moon won.
00:29:27You should have come with us, Paul.
00:29:28Lydia's furious.
00:29:29Oh, she'll get over it.
00:29:30I've got too much on my mind.
00:29:36Any lunch left for me, Ben?
00:29:38There's sandwiches and milk in the breakfast room, Miss Doris.
00:29:41Oh, thanks, Ben.
00:29:53Hello, darling.
00:29:54Hello, Paul.
00:29:54Where have you been hiding?
00:29:55Well, I had some work to do.
00:29:57I hear you're taking law at college.
00:29:59Just the groundwork.
00:30:00My main interest is criminology.
00:30:03Mr. Curtis, do you believe there's such a thing as a perfect crime?
00:30:08It's possible.
00:30:10I've been reading about some perfect crimes in my father's files.
00:30:13He believed there were more undetected criminals at large than have ever been caught.
00:30:19Well, I shouldn't be surprised.
00:30:21The police have their limitations.
00:30:23What a morbid conversation.
00:30:25Fred, it's too bad you've changed.
00:30:27I don't know if you've played some more tennis with Paul.
00:30:29I wouldn't have time, darling.
00:30:30I promised to go up to Middleborough and look at some property for a friend of mine.
00:30:33Oh, Brett, why couldn't we drive you up?
00:30:35The ride would do Paul good.
00:30:37Well, that's a nice of you, Virginia.
00:30:38But it'll take hours to look at tracks and I'll be talking business.
00:30:42I'll phone you when I get back.
00:30:43I'll walk down to the gate with you.
00:30:44Do, Paul.
00:30:45Goodbye, Brett.
00:30:46See you later, darling.
00:30:48Understand you've traveled a lot.
00:30:49Yes, I've always been curious about what was beyond the next horizon.
00:30:52Ever been to Nevada?
00:30:53Yes.
00:30:54Magnificent country it is, too.
00:30:56Makes a man wish he could paint.
00:30:57You'd like it.
00:30:58What's Reno like?
00:30:59Oh, that's indescribable.
00:31:00It's a hodgepodge of wild west and wild east.
00:31:05Cowboys, divorcees, mink and mustangs, dude ranches and the real thing all shuffled together.
00:31:11I'd like to see some of those old ghost towns and a real silver mine.
00:31:15Well, I have an interest in several mines.
00:31:18Perhaps we'll take a trip someday.
00:31:20Do you know what?
00:31:21I'd like to see some of those old ghost towns and a real silver mine.
00:31:24Well, I have an interest in several mines.
00:31:27Perhaps we'll take a trip someday.
00:31:30Do you know Colorado?
00:31:33Quite well.
00:31:34Waynefield must seem pretty tame after those places.
00:31:37I've seen pretty much everything worth seeing.
00:31:41I'll be glad to settle down right here.
00:31:44Well, goodbye, Paul.
00:31:47See you tomorrow.
00:31:48I hope we're going to hit it off together.
00:31:51So long.
00:32:00Hello, fellas.
00:32:00Hello, Mr. Curtis.
00:32:01The professor is expecting me.
00:32:02Yes, sir.
00:32:03Mr. Curtis.
00:32:04Stand him in.
00:32:05Go right in.
00:32:10Hello, Mr. Curtis.
00:32:11The professor is expecting me.
00:32:12Yes, sir.
00:32:13Mr. Curtis.
00:32:14Stand him in.
00:32:14Go right in.
00:32:15Good afternoon, Professor.
00:32:16Hello, Curtis.
00:32:17Oh, Helen.
00:32:18How does it go?
00:32:19There's a new development.
00:32:20The boy?
00:32:21Yes.
00:32:22He came home unexpectedly.
00:32:23Hostile?
00:32:24Definitely.
00:32:25A neurotic type.
00:32:26Interested in criminology.
00:32:28He asks a lot of questions.
00:32:30What's that?
00:32:31Just a lot of questions?
00:32:32We ask.
00:32:33The next question.
00:32:34What's the name?
00:32:35Oh, what's my name?
00:32:36I'll be here.
00:32:37What's the name?
00:32:38Well.
00:32:39What's your name?
00:32:40I'm sorry.
00:32:41Here's your name.
00:32:42I'm sorry.
00:32:43To the doctor.
00:32:44We're asking you.
00:32:45The doctor is in the hospital.
00:32:46The doctor is in the hospital.
00:32:47Hey, I'm sorry.
00:32:48You're off the train.
00:32:49He asks a lot of questions.
00:32:51Remarkably intelligent for his age.
00:32:53I have a feeling he knows more than he should.
00:32:55Does his attitude affect her?
00:32:57It doesn't yet.
00:32:59But he's a persistent little devil.
00:33:03This morning, he made inquiries about me at the bank.
00:33:05Nothing to worry about there.
00:33:07Everything is in order.
00:33:09This afternoon, he was looking through his father's files.
00:33:11When he came downstairs, he asked me if I believed
00:33:13there was such a thing as an accident.
00:33:15You'll bear watching.
00:33:17Has she accepted you?
00:33:18She hasn't yet, but she will.
00:33:20What's the girl's attitude?
00:33:21Oh, Dorothy.
00:33:22A complete conquest.
00:33:24A little beauty, too.
00:33:25Be careful.
00:33:26I warned you before.
00:33:27That weakness of yours will ruin all our plans.
00:33:29Don't worry.
00:33:30Nothing will ruin our plans.
00:33:32I've waited a long time to get back at Cartwright.
00:33:35I'll make them pay for him.
00:33:37I'll make them pay for him.
00:33:38I'll make them pay for him.
00:33:40I'll make them pay for him.
00:33:41I'll make them pay for him.
00:33:42I'll make them pay for him.
00:33:43I'll make them pay for him.
00:33:44I'll make them pay for his meddling interference
00:33:46if it's the last thing I do.
00:33:47You'll do as I tell you.
00:33:49Don't forget, I'm in this, too.
00:33:51Perhaps I made a mistake.
00:33:53Perhaps I should have kept you as a patient
00:33:55instead of making you an associate.
00:33:57Don't forget, I'm concerned with the financial outcome
00:33:59in this case, not your personal revenge.
00:34:01You have nothing to complain of.
00:34:03Everything's working out.
00:34:05The boy is the first, H.
00:34:06He sounds like a subject for mental analysis.
00:34:09He might suggest it to the mother.
00:34:12Sometimes these cases destroy themselves.
00:34:16The important thing is to get the wedding over with
00:34:18as quickly as possible.
00:34:19When you are illegally in possession,
00:34:21we can take care of him here.
00:34:23Funny, that thought was in my mind, too.
00:34:25But why wait till I'm in possession?
00:34:29As her husband, you would be in a position to comfort her.
00:34:32As her fiancé, such a tragedy might cause a revulsion against you.
00:34:35That's true.
00:34:36Therefore, you must lose no time.
00:34:37The stakes are high, and there's constant danger
00:34:38if the boy is following the Barrington trail.
00:34:39But Barrington is legally dead.
00:34:41Fortunately, so is the judge.
00:34:42However, fools and children sometimes stumble upon details
00:34:44which even the most careful strategist has overlooked.
00:34:46I had better meet the lady as soon as possible.
00:34:48Meanwhile, you must impress her with my professional distinction.
00:34:50Understand?
00:34:51Perfectly.
00:34:52Now, be careful.
00:34:53If you can't accomplish this within the week,
00:34:55our relationship will be fine.
00:34:56If you can't accomplish this within the week,
00:34:57our relationship will be fine.
00:34:58to that of doctor and patient.
00:35:00I'm spending the weekend with them.
00:35:01I'll have her consent before Monday.
00:35:04I give up.
00:35:05Brett, you've bewitched the dice.
00:35:06I seem to be lucky in everything but love.
00:35:07You don't really mean that.
00:35:08Well, I'm not.
00:35:09I'm not.
00:35:10I'm not.
00:35:11I'm not.
00:35:12I'm not.
00:35:13I'm not.
00:35:14I'm not.
00:35:15I'm not.
00:35:16You are.
00:35:17I'm not.
00:35:18I'm not.
00:35:19I'm not.
00:35:20I'm not.
00:35:21I'm not.
00:35:22I'm not.
00:35:23I'm not.
00:35:24I'm not.
00:35:25I'm not.
00:35:26I'm not.
00:35:27I'm not.
00:35:28I'm not.
00:35:29Virginia, why do you keep putting me off?
00:35:31You promised me you'd give me time to think it over.
00:35:34You know how much I care for you.
00:35:36You've both been lonely.
00:35:38Why should we put off the happiness of being together?
00:35:42Brett, the white is wonderful.
00:35:52What?
00:35:53You idiot.
00:35:54She wanted to be very happy if I had to leave?
00:35:56No, what?
00:35:57Are you going?
00:35:58Yes.
00:35:59Okay.
00:36:00Here, Ray.
00:36:05Brett!
00:36:06More.
00:36:07Three.
00:36:08We're done.
00:36:09Here, my Ireland.
00:36:10Well, you're done.
00:36:11No, no, no, no.
00:36:13I can't, no.
00:36:14No, no.
00:36:15No, no.
00:36:16Go ahead.
00:36:17Yeah.
00:36:18To our horses.
00:36:19Off with him, our horse, please.
00:36:20When, Virginia?
00:36:24I'll give a dinner party and announce it.
00:36:26You're not going to put me through a formal wedding, I...
00:36:28No, just a dinner party.
00:36:30We'll slip away quietly and I'll send the announcements out later.
00:36:32Good, we'll elope.
00:36:34Elope? That sounds so young and reckless.
00:36:37Doesn't seem right with two grown children.
00:36:39Brett, you do like them, don't you?
00:36:42Like them?
00:36:43A handsome, full-grown family on a silver platter?
00:36:46And you? What more could a man ask?
00:36:49Darling, do you realize that you haven't kissed me since we've been engaged?
00:36:57Princess!
00:36:58Brett!
00:37:00Not much privacy around here, is there?
00:37:02Well, that's family life.
00:37:04Why don't you come in for a swim, Brett? The water's wonderful!
00:37:08How about a swim, Virginia?
00:37:09Oh, no, darling, you go.
00:37:11I want to write the dinner invitation.
00:37:13Is there anyone special you'd like to ask?
00:37:15Why, yes, my old friend Professor Muehlbach, you know, the psychiatrist.
00:37:19You'll enjoy meeting him.
00:37:21Enjoy your swim, darling.
00:37:26I wasn't supposed to tell you this, but I think it's only fair you should know.
00:37:31Oh, I kind of suspected.
00:37:33I guess they didn't tell me because they know I don't approve.
00:37:36No.
00:37:38I don't either.
00:37:40What?
00:37:41I thought all you girls were goofy about him.
00:37:43No, I was at first, but not anymore.
00:37:47Uh-huh.
00:37:48No, really, Paul, I mean it.
00:37:51Remember the other day by the pool here?
00:37:53Yeah.
00:37:53Well, Brett came for a swim.
00:37:57Once when I dived under, he...
00:37:59I don't know how to tell you this.
00:38:03I haven't told anyone.
00:38:04Well, what happened?
00:38:06Well, he...
00:38:06He swam underwater.
00:38:10He got a stranglehold on me and started kissing me.
00:38:15I know it doesn't sound like very much, but it was horrible.
00:38:20I can't describe it.
00:38:21I pulled away.
00:38:25He followed me and said he hadn't meant any harm and asked me if I'd just forget about it and be friends.
00:38:34I felt sort of queer about him ever since.
00:38:39You won't mention this to him, will you?
00:38:42No.
00:38:43And don't you say anything about it.
00:38:45What you've told me adds up with other things.
00:38:47What other things?
00:38:48Oh, I can't tell you now.
00:38:50The trouble is, I may be wrong.
00:38:52I haven't any proof.
00:38:54Just a hunch.
00:38:55Nobody wants to believe me.
00:38:57I believe you, Paul.
00:38:59Thanks, sugar.
00:39:01Well, there's Dr. Vincent.
00:39:02I've got to talk with him.
00:39:03You better run along with him.
00:39:05Oh, but, Paul, are you...
00:39:07Well, what I mean to say is, you still like me, don't you?
00:39:11Oh, sure.
00:39:12But everything's on ice for a while.
00:39:14No dates.
00:39:15Yes, all right.
00:39:16Only, don't forget.
00:39:20Okay, funny face.
00:39:32Hello, Paul.
00:39:34They're announcing their engagement.
00:39:36I suspected as much.
00:39:38What have you found out?
00:39:39Nothing unfavorable to Curtis.
00:39:42Mr. Allen gave me these answers to some inquiries he made.
00:39:47After reading them, you'll probably agree.
00:39:49It looks like a clean bill of health.
00:39:50Well, that may be so, but Lydia just told me something.
00:39:53Would you mind coming up to my room a minute, Doug?
00:39:55Not at all, Paul.
00:39:56Well, good evening, Professor.
00:40:10I'm glad to see you.
00:40:10Well, I was afraid you wouldn't get here.
00:40:27You know how it is.
00:40:28I'll wish something at the last time.
00:40:30Of course.
00:40:31Virginia, this is Professor Mulebach.
00:40:32Mrs. Cartwright.
00:40:33How do you do, Professor Mulebach?
00:40:35I'm honored, madame.
00:40:36It was most gracious of you to invite me.
00:40:39Fred told me so much about you.
00:40:40I was anxious to meet you.
00:40:41Thank you, madame.
00:40:43Happy occasion, they say.
00:40:44Curtis is a lucky fellow.
00:40:46Come in.
00:40:47Come in, professor.
00:40:49Now I'll show you something in the Barrington record that ties in with what Lydia told me.
00:40:57This drawer was locked.
00:40:58It's been opened.
00:40:59Maybe you just thought you locked it.
00:41:01No, I'm sure I locked it yesterday.
00:41:04I hadn't opened it since.
00:41:06Curtis was here, too.
00:41:11May I come in?
00:41:12Or is this a private huddle?
00:41:14Hello, doctor.
00:41:15Hello, Dorothy.
00:41:16The princess wants you in the drawing room.
00:41:18There's a big psycho something or other that she wants you to meet.
00:41:21Spend a breath.
00:41:22You too, Paul.
00:41:23Oh, I don't want to go down.
00:41:24But, Paul, you must.
00:41:26You can't spoil Mother's party.
00:41:28That's right, Paul.
00:41:29Come along.
00:41:29We can talk later.
00:41:37However, I must say that I think that we won that rubber.
00:41:44Why?
00:41:45Because Virginia was keeping slow at home.
00:41:49Virginia's arithmetic is delightful.
00:41:52She subtracts by counting backwards on her fingers.
00:41:54Ten, nine, eight, seven, six.
00:41:59That means ten minus five equals six.
00:42:06Well, that's right, isn't it?
00:42:08Of course it's right.
00:42:09Well, tell me about psychiatry, Professor.
00:42:20It must be very interesting.
00:42:22I'd love to be psychoanalyzed sometime.
00:42:24I'd be delighted to do it.
00:42:25Anytime you say.
00:42:26Oh, Georgia.
00:42:27Justin.
00:42:27Now, look.
00:42:28I was just a little bit of a hate-so-chewing.
00:42:30It's a master of the name.
00:42:30Mr. Cartwright.
00:42:34Benjamin.
00:42:34Mr. Curtis.
00:42:35The card.
00:42:36Well, my friend, here's a chance to display your domestic accomplishments.
00:42:39It's just what I've been waiting for.
00:42:47It's just what I've been waiting for.
00:42:58Sorry.
00:43:03I don't feel well.
00:43:06Excuse me.
00:43:07You stay here, Virginia.
00:43:09I'll take care of it.
00:43:11Paul hasn't been himself lately.
00:43:12An extremely sensitive boy, madame.
00:43:15I would like to talk to him.
00:43:16I have been most successful with the juvenile neurosis.
00:43:19It's nothing serious, Professor.
00:43:21I'm sure.
00:43:24Paul.
00:43:25What is it now?
00:43:28With the words in my dream.
00:43:31Curtis said,
00:43:32it's just what I've been waiting for.
00:43:35When he said that, I could hear the train coming, and then the crash.
00:43:41Gosh, Doc, it's spooky.
00:43:43It's got me.
00:43:45You've got to pull yourself together, Paul.
00:43:49Now, let's look at this thing realistically.
00:43:52I understand Bill Allen's going to announce the engagement.
00:43:55He's known your mother all her life.
00:43:57Do you think he'd sanction the match if he weren't sure of Curtis?
00:44:00I can't figure it out.
00:44:03Maybe I'm going wacky, Doc, but I could swear he's Barrington.
00:44:06Barrington's dead, Paul.
00:44:08I don't believe he is.
00:44:09But it's too fantastic.
00:44:17How is the young man feeling, Doctor?
00:44:19Oh, he's all right.
00:44:21He was just having a dizzy spell.
00:44:23Perhaps I can be of some assistance.
00:44:25Nerves are my specialty.
00:44:26May I come in?
00:44:27Well, it's just a reaction from overwork at school.
00:44:30Ah, yes.
00:44:31I was an intense student myself at his age.
00:44:34Do you mind if we have a little talk, young man?
00:44:37I feel all right.
00:44:38Perhaps the doctor had better go downstairs.
00:44:41Seems a pity to spoil Madame's party.
00:44:43I'd rather have Dr. Vincent stay.
00:44:45Of course.
00:44:45I have no objection.
00:44:47Let's sit down and be comfortable.
00:44:48I understand you are an unusual boy, Paul.
00:44:53Extremely talented.
00:44:55You intend to pursue your father's research into criminology?
00:44:58Yes.
00:44:59An interesting subject.
00:45:00But something must be done about these nervous attacks.
00:45:03They're not exactly normal at your age.
00:45:06I presume you are devoted to your mother?
00:45:09Of course.
00:45:11As one student of human nature to another, may I speak frankly?
00:45:15Go ahead.
00:45:16Go ahead.
00:45:19Go ahead.
00:45:19The mother's gonna hurt you.
00:45:21I'll never have any regrets.
00:45:21No matter if she is the only one, she is the only one.
00:45:25The public is not the only one.
00:45:27When did he settle into a woman, he is the only one.
00:45:29Yes, I am.
00:45:30A little girl.
00:45:30I am a little girl from that.
00:45:31Can you tell me?
00:45:32What is she going to do?
00:45:32Is she going to you?
00:45:33What is she going to do?
00:45:34On my mind?
00:45:35Your father's daughter's daughter is not the only one.
00:45:37No.
00:45:37What is she going to do?
00:45:37I believe it is your emotional aversion to your mother's remarriage
00:45:41which produces these neurotic symptoms.
00:45:43I'm sure I can cure you in a very short time.
00:45:46I would like you to place yourself under my care at Restview.
00:45:50Restview?
00:45:51That's a sanitarium for mental cases.
00:45:53Yes, but I wouldn't consider you a patient, merely a guest.
00:45:57Guest?
00:45:58Well, that's right of you.
00:46:00Good night, Professor.
00:46:03I'm sorry.
00:46:04I assure you I meant no offense.
00:46:05May I see you a moment, Doctor?
00:46:11I'll be right back, Paul.
00:46:15The boy's agitation reveals an emotional influence
00:46:18which should be corrected immediately.
00:46:20I hope you can persuade him.
00:46:23I'll speak to him.
00:46:24Good.
00:46:25Good night.
00:46:35Well?
00:46:36The same words as your dream, weren't they?
00:46:39It's extraordinary.
00:46:41Oh.
00:46:42Those two are mixed up together somehow, Doc.
00:46:50Hallucinations.
00:46:51Do you believe that stuff?
00:46:53I've read about it in textbooks.
00:46:55And according to him, I've got them.
00:46:56He seems to think so.
00:46:58What else did he say, Doc?
00:46:59Well, he wanted me to ask you to go to his sanitarium
00:47:03and let him analyze you.
00:47:05You know, Doc, that might not be a bad idea.
00:47:08But I don't think it's necessary.
00:47:10But, Doc, I might find out something up there.
00:47:12Yes.
00:47:13But, Paul, if those two men are what you think they are,
00:47:16it'd be mighty dangerous.
00:47:17Well, you could come up every day and keep an eye on me,
00:47:20couldn't you?
00:47:20Yes.
00:47:21Besides, it might be a good way to stall for time.
00:47:23I'd make Mother promise not to marry Curtis
00:47:25till I got back.
00:47:26But, Paul...
00:47:26And meanwhile, you could take these to Armstrong
00:47:28and get them to analyze them,
00:47:29their fingerprints off a water glass.
00:47:32Curtis?
00:47:34I'll talk to Muldbach.
00:47:38Paul, you're a very clever boy.
00:47:40Thanks, Doc.
00:47:41I'd be in a tough spot without you.
00:47:43Maybe we're both crazy.
00:47:47Then again, maybe we're not.
00:47:51It's a lovely room, isn't it, Paul?
00:47:58Very nice.
00:47:59I hope you'll find it comfortable.
00:48:01My routine is a simple one.
00:48:02A few heart-to-heart talks, plenty of food and rest.
00:48:05Believe me, Mrs. Cartwright,
00:48:06he will return home a healthier and happier boy.
00:48:09I'm sure he will.
00:48:11Goodbye, darling.
00:48:13Don't read too much.
00:48:14You'll take good care of him, won't you, Professor?
00:48:17Of course, madame.
00:48:18I'll drop in tomorrow and see how he's getting along.
00:48:20Please do, Doctor.
00:48:22I'm always happy to have the cooperation of my colleagues.
00:48:25Goodbye, Paul.
00:48:26I'll see you tomorrow.
00:48:27Goodbye, Doc.
00:48:27Goodbye, Francis.
00:48:28Goodbye, darling.
00:48:31I'll see you later.
00:49:17THE END
00:49:47Office. Could I call outside, please? I'll get the number for you. Well, uh, I forgot my name.
00:50:17It's my tennis shoes. Do you happen to know where I could get a pair? I'm sure Professor Muehlbach can lend you some. Thanks.
00:51:25Well, Paul, can I help you get settled?
00:51:27Oh, no, thanks, Professor.
00:51:29There's not much to do.
00:51:31That's a funny place to hang your coat.
00:51:33Oh, I got tired of looking at myself.
00:51:35Same old face.
00:51:37Touch of inferiority, eh?
00:51:39We'll overcome that.
00:51:41I encourage tidiness as much as possible.
00:51:43I encourage tidiness as much as possible.
00:51:45I encourage tidiness as much as possible.
00:51:47I encourage tidiness as much as possible.
00:51:49I encourage tidiness as much as possible.
00:51:53Orderly room, orderly mind.
00:51:55I hope you have a good appetite for lunch.
00:51:57Pretty fair.
00:51:58Anything special you'd prefer?
00:51:59Oh, I'm not fussy, Professor.
00:52:01That's a nice garden you have.
00:52:03Gardening is my hobby.
00:52:04I'm very proud of my flowers.
00:52:06How about the rest of the place?
00:52:08Do you, uh, have many patients?
00:52:10Quite a few.
00:52:11But don't let your mind dwell on that.
00:52:13We are facing in the direction of normality.
00:52:15I hope you will have complete confidence in me.
00:52:18I hope you will have complete confidence in me.
00:52:20I hope you will have complete confidence in me.
00:52:22I will ask you many personal questions.
00:52:24You must be truthful and accurate in your replies.
00:52:27That's important.
00:52:28Remember, we're friends.
00:52:30Just call the office if you want anything.
00:52:32Is it all right if I use the phone to call outside?
00:52:34Certainly.
00:52:35Feel free to call anyone you wish.
00:52:38I'll see you at lunch.
00:52:41I'd like to get Waynefield 1531, please.
00:52:51Hello, Vixen.
00:52:52What's mixing?
00:52:53Oh, Paul.
00:52:54Where are you?
00:52:55I'm up at Middleborough getting my brain unscrambled.
00:52:58It's all very scientific.
00:52:59Cures hives and hangnails and improves the disposition, it says here.
00:53:03Are you missing my kissing?
00:53:06Was that some kind of code?
00:53:07No, just juvenile vernacular.
00:53:09What pleases the significance?
00:53:11Young romance in the modern manner.
00:53:13Romance.
00:53:14I see.
00:53:15I see.
00:53:45I see.
00:53:46I see.
00:53:47I see...
00:53:48I see.
00:53:49I see.
00:53:50I see.
00:53:51I see.
00:53:52I see.
00:53:54Fuck you.
00:53:56Bye.
00:53:59I know.
00:54:00Don't care.
00:54:01I know.
00:54:02I know.
00:54:03I know.
00:54:05What?
00:54:06Oh, my God.
00:54:08Don't care.
00:54:09It's okay.
00:54:10We can't wait because, you know, I don't believe the matter.
00:54:12I don't believe the matter or not.
00:54:13Well, I don't believe in that, I don't believe.
00:54:14THE END
00:54:44THE END
00:55:14THE END
00:55:44THE END
00:55:46THE END
00:55:50THE END
00:55:52THE END
00:55:53THE END
00:55:55I'll get you a sedative, go to your room.
00:55:57We don't permit the patients to wander
00:55:59through the corridors at night.
00:56:01Well, I'm not a patient, I'm a guest.
00:56:07I must admit, the boy puzzles me.
00:56:09I can learn nothing from him
00:56:11except that he suspects you.
00:56:13I'm not a patient, I'm a guest.
00:56:17I must admit, the boy puzzles me.
00:56:19I can learn nothing from him
00:56:21except that he suspects you.
00:56:23I'm sure he knows you're Barrington.
00:56:25How he arrived at that conjecture, I don't know.
00:56:27From his father's files,
00:56:29I found the Barrington folder in his desk.
00:56:31The boy's as persistent as his father was.
00:56:33I won't be in a clearance until I get
00:56:35squared with the entire family.
00:56:39It'll be quite ironic, won't it?
00:56:41The elusive Barrington married to the widow
00:56:43of the Honorable Judge Albert Cartwright.
00:56:45He won't be appalled to help it.
00:56:47Right now his main idea is to delay the marriage.
00:56:49He's managed that already.
00:56:51He promised him not to marry me until he returns.
00:56:53There must be some way to overcome that.
00:56:55Find some pretext to leave town,
00:56:57then persuade her to join you.
00:56:59You should have sufficient influence
00:57:01to overcome a promise to the boy.
00:57:03I will detain him here as long as possible.
00:57:05As soon as I have word from you
00:57:07that the ceremony has been performed,
00:57:09this troublesome opposition can be eliminated.
00:57:11How do you propose to do it?
00:57:13I will attend to it.
00:57:15Come in.
00:57:17Mr. Curtis, ma'am.
00:57:18Oh, Brett.
00:57:19I didn't expect you so early.
00:57:20I had to see you, dear.
00:57:21I have to go to Washington on business.
00:57:22Oh, darling, what a shame.
00:57:23I want you to come with me.
00:57:24We can stop off at Richmond and be married.
00:57:25I couldn't do that, Brett.
00:57:26I promised Paul.
00:57:27Are you going to let Paul spoil things
00:57:28between us, Virginia?
00:57:29Oh, darling, don't even think such a thing.
00:57:30Then come with me.
00:57:31We'll turn the trip into a honeymoon.
00:57:32Couldn't wait until Paul gets back.
00:57:34I feel so much better about it.
00:57:35Virginia, from the first moment we met,
00:57:36everything went perfect.
00:57:37I was a little bit better.
00:57:38I didn't expect you so early.
00:57:39I didn't expect you so early.
00:57:40I had to see you, dear.
00:57:41I had to go to Washington on business.
00:57:42Oh, darling, what a shame.
00:57:43I want you to come with me.
00:57:44We can stop off at Richmond and be married.
00:57:45I couldn't do that, Brett.
00:57:46I promised Paul.
00:57:47Are you going to let Paul spoil things
00:57:48between us, Virginia?
00:57:49Darling, don't even think such a thing.
00:57:50Then come with me.
00:57:51I'm going to let Paul get back.
00:57:52I feel so much better about it.
00:57:54Virginia, from the first moment we met,
00:57:55everything went perfectly between us.
00:57:57Then Paul came home and you began to change.
00:58:00Nonsense.
00:58:01We announced our engagement.
00:58:02Everything will go as we planned.
00:58:03Let's go down and get the license
00:58:04and have it over with today.
00:58:05Right now.
00:58:06I couldn't.
00:58:07Very well, then.
00:58:08Just as your wish.
00:58:09I'll be leaving this afternoon.
00:58:10I'll be gone for several weeks.
00:58:11Brett, do you really have to go?
00:58:12I'll be leaving this afternoon.
00:58:13I'll be gone for several weeks.
00:58:14Brett, do you really have to go?
00:58:15I'll be leaving this afternoon.
00:58:16I'll be leaving this afternoon.
00:58:17I'll be gone for several weeks.
00:58:19But I am sure.
00:58:20You know that.
00:58:21Then why not marry me?
00:58:22And stop worrying about Paul.
00:58:23I can't help being concerned about him, Brett.
00:58:24He's my own boy.
00:58:25But he's getting the best of care.
00:58:26Mule Bach will have him well again in no time.
00:58:29Let's call him up and find out who he's getting along.
00:58:32Oh.
00:58:33Oh.
00:58:34Of course, he's doing splendidly, madame.
00:58:35You have no cause to worry.
00:58:36No need to delay your marriage.
00:58:37Allow me to offer my felicitations.
00:58:38Goodbye.
00:58:39Goodbye.
00:58:40Let's call him up, and find out who he's getting along.
00:58:47Of course, he's doing splendidly, madame.
00:58:49You have no cause to worry.
00:58:51No need to delay your marriage.
00:58:54Allow me to offer my felicitations.
00:58:57Goodbye.
00:59:07How long will it take you to check some fingerprints?
00:59:09Whose are they?
00:59:10Curtis. Paul got them.
00:59:12He asked me to turn them over to you.
00:59:13He's a tip off the old block, all right.
00:59:16The judge hung on like a bulldog whenever he got his teeth into anything.
00:59:18That's right.
00:59:20I'll have these checked just to prove there's nothing to it.
00:59:23Let me see.
00:59:24Where does Curtis hail from?
00:59:26Oh, he's lived in Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, California.
00:59:30California's good.
00:59:31They get thumbprints on driver's licenses.
00:59:34Curtis says he doesn't drive.
00:59:35Well, we won't take his word for that.
00:59:37Check those with Washington, Tom.
00:59:39And try the California License Bureau.
00:59:40Okay, Chief.
00:59:41So long, Doc.
00:59:42I'll let you know, Doctor, if anything develops.
00:59:44Goodbye, Mr. Armstrong.
01:00:07You say the door was not locked?
01:00:08Why should it be?
01:00:09Sometimes we lock doors as a precaution against somnambulism.
01:00:10Ms. Farber notes here that you complained of having a nightmare.
01:00:11Can you tell me about it?
01:00:12Only that something dangerous was going to happen.
01:00:13Do you have such dreams often?
01:00:14Yes.
01:00:15Can you remember anything definite about them?
01:00:16The train, my father's death.
01:00:17I dream about my father's death.
01:00:18I dream about my father's death.
01:00:19I dream about my father's death.
01:00:20I dream about my father's death.
01:00:22I dream of that often.
01:00:23I understand, of course.
01:00:24Shocking accident.
01:00:25It preys on your mind.
01:00:26It wasn't an accident, Professor.
01:00:27It was murder.
01:00:28That was never proven.
01:00:29You have some theories on the subject?
01:00:30Yes.
01:00:31Indeed.
01:00:32Indeed.
01:00:33I should be interested in hearing.
01:00:34I'd rather not talk about them now, Professor.
01:00:35It gives me a headache.
01:00:36Very well, Paul.
01:00:53And what would you like to do by way of diversion?
01:00:55Well, I see you have some binoculars there.
01:01:00Or why США remember it.
01:01:02They must be good ones.
01:01:03They are excellent.
01:01:04Would you like to examine them?
01:01:05Could I?
01:01:06Of course.
01:01:07Go right ahead.
01:01:20Oh, they're swell.
01:01:21I'd like to take a good look.
01:01:23Come along.
01:01:24You can see Waynefield threw them from the roof.
01:01:32There's the county seat down there.
01:01:35From here, you can see Waynefield.
01:01:49Over here, Paul, you can see the ferry crossing the river.
01:01:56What's that building down there?
01:01:58It's just an abandoned farm.
01:02:01Over this way, Paul, see the ferry?
01:02:03You can almost distinguish the people's faces on the deck.
01:02:19Nice binoculars.
01:02:20Yes, they are.
01:02:21Well, there's Dr. Vincent.
01:02:23We'd better go down.
01:02:24Yes, sir.
01:02:25Would you mind going to your room?
01:02:26I'd like to have a talk with the doctor.
01:02:27Then I shall send him to you.
01:02:28I am very glad you came, doctor.
01:02:29I'm having a little difficulty.
01:02:30I have to get back to you.
01:02:31I have to get back to you.
01:02:32I am very glad you came, doctor.
01:02:35I'm having a little difficulty.
01:02:36I'm very glad you came, Doctor.
01:02:38I'm having a little difficulty.
01:02:40I feel there's something on Paul's mind
01:02:42which he does not confide to me.
01:02:44If there's something you know,
01:02:46you may speak freely.
01:02:48All I know is he has nightmares about you.
01:02:50I'm not sure how to do it.
01:02:52I'm not sure how to do it.
01:02:54I'm not sure how to do it.
01:02:56I'm not sure how to do it.
01:02:58I'm not sure how to do it.
01:03:00I'm not sure how to do it.
01:03:02I'm not sure how to do it.
01:03:04All I know is he has nightmares about his father.
01:03:06That he's told me.
01:03:08But he will not say any more.
01:03:10His reticence hinders my diagnosis.
01:03:12If you could persuade him to discuss these matters more fully,
01:03:14it would be of great assistance.
01:03:16I'll see what I can do.
01:03:18Where is Paul?
01:03:20In his room.
01:03:26Show Dr. Vincent to Cartwright's room, please.
01:03:34Come in.
01:03:46Hello, Doc.
01:03:47How are you, Paul?
01:03:48Sure glad to see you.
01:03:49How's Mother?
01:03:50A little worried about you.
01:03:51Otherwise, all right.
01:03:52I saw her this morning.
01:03:53Professor Mulebox is a good host.
01:03:54I'm enjoying it here.
01:03:55That's fine.
01:03:56Look, Doc.
01:03:57I found something in Plato I'd like to show you.
01:04:04Oh, yes.
01:04:05Yeah.
01:04:06Great chap, Plato.
01:04:07As modern today as he was in his own time.
01:04:11Paul, how would you like to take a little ride with me?
01:04:13Well, that depends on Professor Mulebox.
01:04:14We'll have to ask him.
01:04:15Well, let's do that.
01:04:16Well, how do you find your patient, Doctor?
01:04:17He looks rested, but I'd like to take him for a drive in the fresh air so he won't feel
01:04:23shut in here.
01:04:24That is, if you have no objections.
01:04:25Not at all.
01:04:26Provided you don't keep him out too long.
01:04:27Oh, a half hour or so.
01:04:28We'll take a drive through the hills.
01:04:29This is beautiful country.
01:04:30Oh, yes.
01:04:31I mean, I have to take a walk around here.
01:04:32If you can't take him for a walk around here.
01:04:33Well, I don't know.
01:04:34Come on, Doc.
01:04:35I'd like to take him for a drive in the fresh air
01:04:37so he won't feel shut in here.
01:04:38That is, if you have no objections.
01:04:40Not at all, provided you don't keep him out too long.
01:04:43Oh, a half hour or so.
01:04:44We'll take a drive through the hills.
01:04:45This is beautiful country.
01:04:47I trust you will urge Paul to relax and talk more freely.
01:04:51I'm very anxious for him to get straightened out
01:04:53so he can go back to school.
01:04:54If he falls any further behind,
01:04:56I'm afraid he'll overwork again.
01:04:58Of course.
01:04:59Well, come along, Paul.
01:05:00We won't be long.
01:05:05That was luck.
01:05:10I didn't think he'd let me go.
01:05:12He couldn't very well refuse.
01:05:14I saw Armstrong.
01:05:15He's having the prints checked.
01:05:17And Paul, while I was at the city hall,
01:05:20I saw your mother and Curtis go into the marriage license bureau.
01:05:23But Doc, she promised me.
01:05:25I know how you feel.
01:05:26It hasn't been easy for me to accept this situation either.
01:05:29Maybe you won't have to.
01:05:31What do you mean?
01:05:32There's an abandoned farm building here,
01:05:33exactly like in my dream.
01:05:35I saw it from the roof.
01:05:36Paul, one ramshackle old building looks much like another.
01:05:39Maybe.
01:05:40But something very strange happened on that roof this afternoon.
01:05:44I had a feeling that Mule Bach was going to shove me off
01:05:47when you drove up.
01:05:49Are you sure you're not just imagining these things, Paul?
01:05:52Sure, I'm sure.
01:05:52And I'll tell you something else, too.
01:05:54Curtis drove himself up here last night.
01:05:56Curtis driving?
01:05:58That's strange.
01:05:58He told me he couldn't drive.
01:06:00I know.
01:06:00That's why I got the license number.
01:06:02I thought maybe you could find out who owns the car.
01:06:32He told me, don't let me get out of her car.
01:06:34I thought what was this one.
01:06:35Oh, that's because I can't actually get out of her car.
01:06:35I mean, I want to walk a car.
01:06:37Oh, look.
01:06:37I just want to walk a car.
01:06:38I want to walk with her.
01:06:39I want to walk with a car.
01:06:40I need to walk with her.
01:06:40Well, I can't walk with her car.
01:06:41Give me a hand, will you, Doc?
01:06:42I can't walk with my car.
01:06:43I can't look for that.
01:06:43Do you want to walk with my car?
01:06:45I can't walk with her car, but she wants a car.
01:06:46He said to walk with a car.
01:06:47Where's a car?
01:06:49Come on.
01:06:50What's that?
01:06:51It looks like a car.
01:06:53It looks like a chimney, a part of a motor.
01:06:56Give me a hand, will you, Doc?
01:07:09That's the sign from the truck.
01:07:16Son, you certainly called a turn on this one.
01:07:23Don't worry, Doc.
01:07:46That sign will certainly be an eye-opener to Armstrong.
01:07:48We'd better take it right over to his office.
01:07:50You'd better.
01:07:51I'll have to go back.
01:07:52A mule bark will get suspicious.
01:07:54You'd better stop here, Doc.
01:07:55I'll walk the rest of the way.
01:07:56No use taking any chances with that evidence.
01:08:08I don't like to see you go back in there,
01:08:09feeling the way you do about that place.
01:08:11Oh, I'll be all right.
01:08:12I've got to go in and stall for time.
01:08:14If things get too hot, I'll, I'll phone Lydia and say,
01:08:16I'm lonesome.
01:08:17That'll mean get here quick.
01:08:19All right, Paul, but take it easy.
01:08:21I'd better go home and clean up a bit,
01:08:22then I'll go right over to Armstrong.
01:08:23So long, Doc.
01:08:27Darling, don't be angry.
01:08:29Surely one day doesn't make that much difference.
01:08:31I promised Dr. Stoney could marry us.
01:08:34You wouldn't want me to hurt his feelings, would you?
01:08:36Why can't we go over there now?
01:08:38I don't know.
01:08:39Why wait?
01:08:40We can spend tonight and tomorrow at the lake
01:08:42and then go on to Washington.
01:08:45After all, I must think of that contract, Virginia.
01:08:48Even a man in love has to think of business.
01:08:51All right.
01:08:52I'll call Dr. Stone,
01:08:53see if he can't find some time free.
01:08:56He ought to be able to work us in somewhere.
01:08:57A ceremony doesn't take long.
01:08:59Do you want me to call him?
01:09:00No, I'll do it.
01:09:08Oh, Dorothy.
01:09:25Hello, Lydia.
01:09:28Oh, hello.
01:09:30Is Dorothy home?
01:09:31No.
01:09:32Well, I'd better come back later.
01:09:34Well, go away.
01:09:35Fred?
01:09:36Oh, Fred, where are you?
01:09:37Out here.
01:09:38We have a visitor.
01:09:40Hello, Lydia.
01:09:41Hello, Mrs. Cartwright.
01:09:43Well, goodbye.
01:09:46That's strange.
01:09:48What on earth happened?
01:09:49Nothing.
01:09:50She just came looking for Dorothy.
01:09:52What did Dr. Stone say?
01:09:54Dr. Stone?
01:09:56Oh, yes.
01:09:57He's busy all day today in the sea thing.
01:10:00But I made an appointment for noon tomorrow.
01:10:02Oh, good.
01:10:03Now, where shall we go to celebrate?
01:10:05Why not go to that little inn where we first had dinner together?
01:10:11Brett.
01:10:12I'd rather not go out tonight.
01:10:13I've got packing to do and a few letters to write.
01:10:15I'll just have dinner on a tray in my room with Dorothy.
01:10:18And tell her the news.
01:10:19She goes back to school on Monday, and I won't have another chance to see her.
01:10:24I hope I may look forward to your exclusive attention on our honeymoon, Mrs. Curtis.
01:10:27Well, you shouldn't call me that right yet.
01:10:30It's very unlucky, you know.
01:10:32With all the luck I have, I can afford to be reckless.
01:10:37I'll phone you later, darling.
01:10:38Come in.
01:10:54Come in.
01:10:57Hello, darling.
01:10:59Is anything wrong?
01:11:00No, dear.
01:11:01You've been crying.
01:11:03It's just my nerves, that's all.
01:11:05Benjamin's going to bring supper up here.
01:11:06I thought it'd be nice and cozy, just the two of them.
01:11:09Come on, sit down, darling.
01:11:11Something is wrong.
01:11:13You're lacking.
01:11:15Dorothy.
01:11:17Brett and I are going to be married tomorrow.
01:11:19Married tomorrow?
01:11:21Oh.
01:11:23For a minute, I thought she'd grung with him.
01:11:26Brett has to go to Washington on business.
01:11:28He decided to make it a honeymoon.
01:11:30It means breaking my word to Paul.
01:11:33That's what has me upset, I guess.
01:11:36I'm worried about him.
01:11:38Now, don't be foolish.
01:11:40After all, it's your life.
01:11:42Paul won't mind as long as you're happy.
01:11:44Where's he going to be?
01:11:46What are you going to wear?
01:11:48I'm going to be there, of course.
01:11:49Of course you are, dear.
01:11:50You're going to be my bridesmaid.
01:11:52Oh, darling, that's marvelous.
01:11:54What do I wear?
01:11:55Oh, just something simple.
01:11:56Your blue dress.
01:11:57We're going to be married at the minister's house.
01:11:59And then we'll leave you at the Allens.
01:12:01Brett and I will go up to the cottage for a day or two before we go to Washington.
01:12:04What did he say? Did he kneel down?
01:12:06Of course not silly.
01:12:07But he was very determined about not leaving me here.
01:12:10Oh, Brett is so masterful.
01:12:12You'll write to me, won't you?
01:12:14Of course.
01:12:16Every day.
01:12:17That's the story, Mr. Armstrong.
01:12:19As strange as it sounds, you must admit it's not just a figment of Paul's imagination.
01:12:23Well, I've run across some strange disclosures in my career.
01:12:26But the stream detection beats anything I've ever heard.
01:12:30Want me?
01:12:31Yes, let's take a look at that.
01:12:34Hey, where did this come from?
01:12:35Paul Cartwright dug it up on an abandoned farm at Middleborough.
01:12:38Near the mule box place.
01:12:40Well, I'll be doggone.
01:12:41All we need now is the truck that goes with it.
01:12:43Better start a search up there.
01:12:44Send the car out.
01:12:46Any news on the fingerprints?
01:12:47No, not yet.
01:12:48Put in the call and speed it up.
01:12:50Miss Farber, didn't you get that number yet?
01:12:53It must answer.
01:12:54Lydia's waiting to hear from me.
01:12:55Hello?
01:12:56Hello?
01:12:57Hello?
01:13:08What do you mean by disconnecting the phone when I'm trying to get a call through?
01:13:12I want you to be absolutely quiet.
01:13:14You are agitated.
01:13:15I was afraid your outing today would be too much for you.
01:13:18I'm getting out of this place, but quick.
01:13:20Not in your present condition, my boy.
01:13:22You are hysterical.
01:13:24I couldn't possibly allow you to leave in such a state.
01:13:27Allow me?
01:13:28You don't think you can keep me here if I want to go, do you?
01:13:31I'm afraid that may be necessary.
01:13:34You seem to be forgetting that I'm a guest.
01:13:36All my patients are guests.
01:13:39Sit down, my dear boy, and calm yourself.
01:13:41Tell me, what has upset you?
01:13:45Was it something you found at that farm where you went this afternoon?
01:13:50You followed us.
01:13:51I observed you from the roof with the binoculars.
01:13:54All right, since you know so much.
01:13:56We found the truck that killed my father.
01:13:58The police ought to have the evidence by now, and I know you and Curtis were mixed up in it.
01:14:02Again, you were having hallucinations.
01:14:12Hello.
01:14:14Oh, hello professor.
01:14:15Where have you been?
01:14:16I've been trying to reach you for the past hour.
01:14:18I went to the station for tickets.
01:14:20We're being married tomorrow noon.
01:14:22That's impossible now.
01:14:23I'll explain when I see you.
01:14:24We'd be in half an hour at the east end of the golf course.
01:14:27I'll be there.
01:14:28I don't like to exaggerate Paul's danger, Mr. Armstrong,
01:14:33but that place up there gives me the creeps.
01:14:35I'm uneasy about the boy.
01:14:37Why does everything take so long?
01:14:39The machinery of the law, Doctor.
01:14:41It's much better than it used to be.
01:14:44Armstrong?
01:14:47Farber?
01:14:49The car driven by Curtis is registered under the name of Charlotte Farber.
01:14:52Does that name mean anything?
01:14:54I don't know.
01:14:55She's Moobock's secretary, yeah?
01:14:57Put a blanket out for it.
01:14:58Get going.
01:14:59Chief.
01:15:00The California Motor Vehicles has a thumbprint on Brett Curtis.
01:15:03It matches the print taken from the body in the mine identified as Barrington.
01:15:07That means Curtis was killed in the mine, not Barrington.
01:15:10Paul was right.
01:15:11And Barrington is just cunning enough to pull something like that, too.
01:15:14Then it is unlikely that Curtis could be Barrington.
01:15:18Well, I don't know.
01:15:20I don't know.
01:15:21Well, Chief.
01:15:22We've got what's left of the truck.
01:15:23Buried under a ton of hay.
01:15:24Any fingerprints?
01:15:25Yep.
01:15:26In a tool compartment.
01:15:27Compare those.
01:15:28They match all right.
01:15:29They match the Curtis prints, Paul got from the water glass.
01:15:30Well, are you satisfied?
01:15:31Go to the country club.
01:15:32Pick up Brett Curtis.
01:15:33Suspicion of murder.
01:15:34Cartwright case.
01:15:35Right, Chief.
01:15:36Get a Cartwright.
01:15:37We've got to get to that boy on.
01:15:38We've got to get to that boy on.
01:15:39We've got to get to that boy on.
01:15:40We've got to get to that boy on.
01:15:41We've got to get to that boy on.
01:15:42We've got to get to that boy on.
01:15:43We've got to get to that boy on.
01:15:44Hey, you're right.
01:15:45You're right.
01:15:46Pick up Brett Curtis.
01:15:47Suspicion of murder.
01:15:48Cartwright's case.
01:15:49I see you.
01:15:50We've got to get to that boy, Armstrong.
01:15:51The old back and Curtis are working together,
01:15:52and there's no telling what may have happened to them by this time.
01:15:55Get me in the mailbox place.
01:15:57I said Middleburg.
01:15:58Don't worry, Doctor.
01:15:59We'll find out in a few minutes.
01:16:12Brett.
01:16:13Hello, Dorothy, what are you doing here?
01:16:15Princess, tell me about tomorrow.
01:16:17Oh, Fred, I'm so thrilled.
01:16:19Mother's going to let me be a bridesmaid.
01:16:21Isn't that wonderful?
01:16:22I thought we might drive down to the florist
01:16:24and get dozens of roses and take them to the cottage.
01:16:26I want to do something special,
01:16:28and I'm sure the princess would love her.
01:16:30That's a charming idea, Dorothy.
01:16:33I should have thought of that myself.
01:16:34Well, then, let's go.
01:16:36Just a moment.
01:16:37I was going to meet somebody here,
01:16:39but I'll leave a note for him.
01:16:41Don't be long.
01:16:43That's strange.
01:16:45Come on, Doctor, my car is downstairs.
01:17:11Professor Newback?
01:17:12Yes.
01:17:13Mr. Curtis asked me to give this to you.
01:17:16Mr. Curtis asked me to give this to you.
01:17:22Mr. Curtis asked me to give this to you.
01:17:25Mr. Thomas asked for a tercer aid.
01:17:27No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
01:17:30Mr. Curtis asked me to give it to you.
01:17:31Mr. Curtis asked me to give it you.
01:17:32I'll take you to my sooner.
01:17:33If I am?
01:17:34Mr. Curtis asked me question.
01:17:35Thanks.
01:17:36We can fine speak for you.
01:17:37Mr. Curtis asked them.
01:17:39Thank you for your mercy.
01:17:41Mr. Curtis asked me...
01:17:42All left.
01:17:46Which is the latest latest?
01:17:47Let me go!
01:18:12Open up!
01:18:13What's the meaning of this?
01:18:16How dare you break in?
01:18:16This is private property.
01:18:17Sure, we know.
01:18:18We're just nuts looking for a pallet cell.
01:18:20Where's the Cartwright boys?
01:18:21I know nothing.
01:18:22I'm just an employee here.
01:18:23Well, we'll just have to go around breaking down doors.
01:18:26You have no right to search this place.
01:18:27You have no warrant.
01:18:29The district attorney wants Paul Cartwright,
01:18:31and he wants him alive.
01:18:32Of course he's alive.
01:18:33He's in his room.
01:18:34Which room?
01:18:34The first one down the hall, but it's locked.
01:18:36Have you a key?
01:18:37No, Professor Muehlbach has the key.
01:18:39He's out for the evening.
01:18:40Slade, take this woman in custody.
01:18:43Hold her as a material witness.
01:18:45Come on, Langdon.
01:19:02I'm afraid we're too late.
01:19:03I'm not so sure.
01:19:03Look at this.
01:19:05Good boy.
01:19:06He got away.
01:19:07I hope.
01:19:10There's no connection here.
01:19:12We can call from the switchboard.
01:19:22Are you calling his home?
01:19:23No, I'm calling Lydia.
01:19:24I don't want to alarm Virginia just yet.
01:19:25Curtis may be there.
01:19:26That's right.
01:19:27I'd better have the Cartwright house covered.
01:19:30Hello, Lydia.
01:19:31Yes, this is Dr. Vincent.
01:19:32I'm up at Muehlbach's.
01:19:34We've been trying to get you to Mr. Armstrong's office.
01:19:37Paul's here.
01:19:38Hello, Doc.
01:19:39Oh, sure I got out.
01:19:41What?
01:19:42I knew it.
01:19:43Boy, this is really it.
01:19:44What is it?
01:19:45Hello, Lydia.
01:19:46Paul come home for the wedding?
01:19:47Yeah.
01:19:47What do you mean wedding?
01:19:48Well, don't you know?
01:19:49Mrs. Cartwright's marrying that droop Curtis the first thing tomorrow.
01:19:52How do you know?
01:19:53Well, I saw Dorothy and Curtis come out of the forest with a big box, and they drove off
01:19:56in her car.
01:19:57Mike Peppis told me they were going up to decorate the cottage on account of Mrs. Cartwright.
01:20:00Curtis and Dorothy have gone up to the cottage alone?
01:20:02Yes.
01:20:02Listen, Paul.
01:20:04Just a minute, Doc.
01:20:05Curtis and Dorothy have gone up to the cottage together alone.
01:20:07What?
01:20:08Doc, my sister and Curtis went up to Lakewood.
01:20:11She's alone with them.
01:20:12Muehlbach knows the police.
01:20:13It happened.
01:20:13Anything can happen.
01:20:14We're getting out there.
01:20:15So long.
01:20:15Come on.
01:20:16Where's the car?
01:20:16Outside.
01:20:17Lydia, you better stay here.
01:20:18Not me.
01:20:18I'm coming with you.
01:20:19Well, why doesn't somebody tell me something?
01:20:32I'm coming with you.
01:21:02He must have turned off.
01:21:05I don't see him.
01:21:07Better backtrack.
01:21:08I don't see him.
01:21:08Put up your hands and get out.
01:21:27What's the meaning of this?
01:21:29You're under arrest.
01:21:31Put up your hands and get up.
01:21:36What's the meaning of this?
01:21:37You're under arrest.
01:21:38This is an outrage.
01:21:39You must be mistaking me for someone else.
01:21:40Come along.
01:21:42Here.
01:21:44Sir, the Princess will arrange them all over again.
01:21:46She can make flowers look as if they just grew out of a vase.
01:21:50Well, we'd better be starting back, Brad.
01:21:53What about a ride in the lunch?
01:21:56It's perfect out on the lake.
01:21:58There are a million stars floating on the water,
01:22:01and the crescent moon looks like something out of Omar Khayyam.
01:22:06Brad, you are the most romantic person.
01:22:09Most men around here never even heard of Omar Khayyam.
01:22:12If they did, they think he's a Turkish wrestler or something.
01:22:15Mother's really lucky.
01:22:17I'm glad you think so.
01:22:19Why are you looking at me like that?
01:22:21Because you're very lovely in the moonlight.
01:22:24Well, everybody is.
01:22:26But I adore compliments.
01:22:28The best I ever got from George was,
01:22:29oh, come on, you look all right.
01:22:32You know, Brett, I've thrown out of that crowd.
01:22:34I don't know what I ever saw in them.
01:22:37I'm really quite poetic at all.
01:22:39Only it's positively lethal to let anybody know about it in our crowd.
01:22:42They simply jeer.
01:22:46I heard a car, didn't you?
01:22:48Probably out on the main highway.
01:22:51Come on.
01:22:54Don't hold my arm so tight.
01:22:56Oh, I'm sorry.
01:22:58Steps are so uneven, I was afraid you might fall.
01:23:00Really, Brett, I think we'd better not.
01:23:03I must be getting back.
01:23:04Mother will be worried.
01:23:05Where is your spirit of adventure?
01:23:07I thought you were romantic.
01:23:09All right.
01:23:10But we won't stay long.
01:23:12You're here, all right.
01:23:25There's no lights on in the house.
01:23:29There's a light in the buff house.
01:23:30I don't know.
01:23:31All right.
01:23:31All right.
01:23:31They're in here! Come on, Heath!
01:23:41All right, Barrington.
01:23:44You meddling fool!
01:24:01Get out of here!
01:24:13Paul!
01:24:22It's clearing now.
01:24:24Look, Mother, we can see ahead.
01:24:26No, Virginia. Don't go back. It's all over.
01:24:56It's all over.
01:24:58It's all over.
01:25:01I'm sorry.
01:25:03Not going back.
01:25:08I'm sorry.
01:25:10It's all over.
01:25:12I'm sorry.
01:25:14You know, we haven't had this much.
01:25:16We're not.
01:25:18No, you.
