Hello and welcome to one and all. What happens if one was to get bitten by a vampire bat? Do you think that you can then become a vampire? Possible? Impossible? Well in today's feature from 1935 called Condemned to Live, we just might find out. Our film opens with three explorers in a cave in Africa. One of the explorers is a pregnant woman. I'll give you one guess what happens to her in the cave. Anywho, years later we find ourselves in a small village in Europe. It just so happens that in this small village a series of murders are taking place and the villagers won't stand or sit for it. They believe a giant bat is the cause of these mysterious murders. That's were Pro. Kristan enters. Pro. Kristan says not to worry and assures them there's a perfectly reasonable explanation or is there. Well we're just going to have to watch to find out. Staring in this "We better get a night light", we have....Ralph Morgan, Pedro de Cordoba, Maxine Doyle, Russell Gleason, Mischa Auer, Lucy Beaumont, Carl Stockdale, Barbara Bedford, Robert Frazer, Ferdinand Schumann-Heink, Heidi Shope and Marilyn Knowlden. So lets make some Vampire's Blood Punch, make some Chipped beef (a dish of the 30s) and enjoy. Thanks so much for watching.

00:01:16Always little drums.
00:01:20Friends, I shall go mad.
00:01:22There, there, my dear.
00:01:24You must rest.
00:01:47I can't stand it.
00:01:49I can't stand it.
00:01:51You've been so brave, my dear.
00:01:53You must continue to be.
00:01:55If you'll love me some,
00:01:58kill me.
00:01:59Kill me now.
00:02:00Remember, Martha.
00:02:02You have another night to think of beside your own.
00:02:06Then go for help.
00:02:08With your knowledge of the jungle, you'll get through.
00:02:10You forget, Martha.
00:02:12I can't leave you now.
00:02:14You need a doctor soon.
00:02:16I can't leave you now.
00:02:34How much longer will it be?
00:02:37Why don't they attack?
00:02:39I'd rather they kill us and get it over with.
00:02:41Study, France.
00:02:43The natives will never attack us here.
00:02:45Why, doctor?
00:02:46Why?
00:02:46They're afraid.
00:02:47Of us?
00:02:48No, of this place.
00:02:49This cave is infested with bats.
00:02:52Bats?
00:02:53Are they afraid of bats?
00:02:54Vampire bats.
00:02:55Do they believe in that silly superstition?
00:02:57It is no superstition, my friend.
00:02:59It's true.
00:03:01The natives call them birds
00:03:02and fear them might as well as well as they may.
00:03:09These hideous monsters swoop down upon their victims in the night.
00:03:13They fasten themselves to the throat
00:03:15and drink the blood.
00:03:17From here.
00:03:33THE END
00:04:03It's Jamba, Doctor
00:04:07Just like Frida
00:04:13And drained of blood he is
00:04:21Just like the other
00:04:23What manner of a monster
00:04:27Could this be?
00:04:28That
00:04:29What?
00:04:33Here comes the good professor
00:04:35He can help us if anyone can
00:04:38Terror again, Professor Christon
00:04:52You found him in the cave?
00:04:58Like Frida
00:04:59You found him in the cave
00:05:16Like Frida
00:05:17He is the same?
00:05:19Yes
00:05:20The throat torn open too
00:05:22Gene Handel says the monster is a bat
00:05:25A larger one than we've ever seen
00:05:28True, good Doctor, true
00:05:30But still a bat
00:05:32Some huge and loathsome thing
00:05:35It fastens to their throats
00:05:37It drags them to the caves
00:05:39Then what else but a bat
00:05:42That only sees at night
00:05:45Can they be right?
00:05:47Of course not
00:05:47Tell them, sir
00:05:48No bat could tear their throats as if with teeth
00:05:51And drag their bodies to the cave
00:05:52There are stranger things upon this earth
00:05:55Than you could know of, David
00:05:56What?
00:05:57What a vampire
00:05:58Would attack like this?
00:06:01Then
00:06:02You both believe that this monster is a bat?
00:06:05If one could be so large
00:06:06Then I say yes
00:06:07And you, sir?
00:06:10It is strange
00:06:12It never happens in the light
00:06:15It is not yet given to us to know
00:06:21Whether or not this monster is a bat
00:06:24But of one thing we are sure
00:06:26That both these hideous things
00:06:29Have happened after dark
00:06:31Until this dreadful thing is caught
00:06:35Shun the dark
00:06:36For no reason leave your homes
00:06:39When dusk has fallen
00:06:41Bolt your doors
00:06:43And burn it
00:06:45Give this monster no opportunity
00:06:48And you are safe
00:06:51Now
00:06:53Go to your homes
00:06:55And guard yourselves
00:06:57With light
00:06:58That would be for John
00:07:21Mother Molly
00:07:34Oh, it's you, my child
00:07:51I'm that fixed by this time of day
00:07:53What with the townsfolk
00:07:54Trooping in and out
00:07:55Muddy boots on my clean floors
00:07:58And us liable to be murdered in our beds
00:08:01Have they found what did it?
00:08:03They have not
00:08:04And unless they do
00:08:05There'll be another
00:08:06Mark my words
00:08:08Little Frida last week
00:08:10Janival last night
00:08:12Oh, Mother Molly
00:08:14It's horrible
00:08:15Horrible it is
00:08:16What's in the basket?
00:08:21Roses for my garden
00:08:22Fresh lavender for your linens
00:08:24And plum preserves for your table
00:08:27The professor's table, you mean
00:08:30You'll make him a good wife, Marguerite
00:08:33The professor is blessed
00:08:35Oh, I hope so
00:08:37I want to be a good wife
00:08:38But
00:08:39But the professor's so good
00:08:41So
00:08:41Oh, Mother Molly
00:08:43Do you think I'll ever be like that?
00:08:45The professor lives for the poor, my child
00:08:47The poor in spirit as well
00:08:49But these ingrates take advantage of his goodness
00:08:52If I hadn't made a rule
00:08:53That they couldn't come before this hour
00:08:55I'd have them underfoot all day
00:08:58With muddy boots?
00:09:00But surely now something must be done
00:09:02There's not a problem that isn't brought to him
00:09:05Which cow to buy
00:09:06How to make up with their sweet arse
00:09:08They even ask him when to kiss their wife
00:09:11And that's what comes of being wise and good
00:09:15Do you think he told himself to marry me?
00:09:18That's wisdom, too
00:09:20But these townsfolk and their problems fill his days
00:09:24He has to write his books by candlelight
00:09:27I really fear for him
00:09:29Sometimes he gets so tired
00:09:31That after you are wed
00:09:33You'll make him rest
00:09:35I'll try
00:09:36David says a saint needs no rest
00:09:39You're very fond of David, aren't you, child?
00:09:43Why, yes
00:09:43Of course
00:09:44Naturally
00:09:46I've known him ever since we were children
00:09:48I understand
00:09:50But remember, child
00:09:53It's better to marry safely
00:09:55Of course
00:09:56That is
00:09:57I'm very proud of the honor
00:09:59Professor Christon has done me
00:10:01They're beginning to arrive
00:10:05Taking advantage of the professor's goodness
00:10:08Tiring him all out
00:10:10Well, wipe your feet and come in
00:10:14Hurry up
00:10:16Don't let all the flies in
00:10:17Not in the book chair
00:10:29Over there
00:10:29Over there, on the bench
00:10:30Are you very busy?
00:10:45When you're here, never
00:10:47Come sit down
00:10:51It was nice of you to come to see me
00:10:53I brought you some flowers
00:10:57How like you
00:10:59To bring them
00:11:00You know what I mean
00:11:02You're like your flowers, Marguerite
00:11:05It's a very pretty speech, Professor Christon
00:11:09When are you going to call me Paul?
00:11:13I mean to, Paul
00:11:15But somehow I forget
00:11:17You see, you're a very important person
00:11:20And you're a very young one
00:11:22I'm not a child
00:11:24My tapestry won the prize at the fair
00:11:26And pride goeth before a fall
00:11:29Oh
00:11:31What is it, Zan?
00:11:42I have only just returned, Master
00:11:44I wanted you to know that I'm here
00:11:46I'm sorry I was startled, Zan
00:11:49I didn't mean to frighten you, Miss Marguerite
00:11:52Would you put these flowers in water, Zan?
00:11:55They're lovely
00:11:56You may have one, Zan
00:11:58I brought them to Professor Christon
00:12:01Thank you, Miss Marguerite
00:12:04Marguerite
00:12:14Oh, I'm sorry
00:12:16Truly I am
00:12:17But he frightens me so
00:12:19He's, he's hideous
00:12:21Beauty or ugliness
00:12:23Is only of the soul, Marguerite
00:12:25I know
00:12:27But after all these
00:12:28Zan has devoted his life to me
00:12:31Would give it for me joyfully
00:12:33That isn't ugliness
00:12:34You saved his life
00:12:36He feels it belongs to you
00:12:38Gratitude is beauty
00:12:40Forgive me
00:12:43I'll try not to be afraid of him
00:12:45We can never be afraid of what we love
00:12:48If we love our brother
00:12:49How can we fear him?
00:12:52I know
00:12:52I'll try
00:12:54I must go now
00:12:56Father isn't very well
00:12:58Don't worry, dear
00:13:00The doctor told me not to worry
00:13:02But somehow I can't help it
00:13:04Come and see him later if you can
00:13:06Your visits help him so
00:13:07I will
00:13:08Goodbye, Marguerite
00:13:13Goodbye, Paul
00:13:38Can't you see, David
00:13:43There isn't anything to be done
00:13:45But you don't love him, Marguerite
00:13:47Oh, but I do, David
00:13:48I do
00:13:49You mustn't say that
00:13:50He's so good
00:13:54And kind
00:13:55And generous
00:13:56I know that
00:13:57You don't have to praise
00:13:58Professor Christon to me
00:14:00I think he's wonderful
00:14:01But that isn't love
00:14:02You respect and admire him
00:14:05And even revere him
00:14:06But that isn't enough to marry for
00:14:08I am honored the professor has chosen me, David
00:14:12And I'm going to try and be worthy of him
00:14:15A good wife
00:14:16You'll be a good wife
00:14:18You'll bake your bread
00:14:20And sew your seams
00:14:21And keep your copper polished
00:14:23Please
00:14:23I'd better go
00:14:25David
00:14:30That's love, Marguerite
00:14:31Don't be frightened
00:14:32Don't you see that you can't help loving me any more than I can stop loving you
00:14:36Oh, don't you see we can't let this happen to us
00:14:39Oh, I mustn't listen to you, David
00:14:40It's wrong and wicked
00:14:41I'm betrothed to Professor Christon
00:14:44Anyway, it's too late
00:14:46The bans have already been published
00:14:48And father would never retract
00:14:49Besides, the honor is too great
00:14:52I know
00:14:53And I have nothing to offer
00:14:55And if you weren't betrothed, your father would never consent
00:14:58He's hardly more than civil when we meet
00:15:01Oh, you mustn't think that, David
00:15:02Father isn't well
00:15:03And then this dreadful bat preys on his mind
00:15:07A bat, these superstitious fools
00:15:10What do you think it is?
00:15:12I don't know
00:15:13But I'm sure it's not a bat
00:15:16I should be with father now
00:15:19I've stayed far too long
00:15:20Goodbye, David
00:15:22Reach home before dusk
00:15:40The doctor said no
00:15:42But I wanted to be sure you agreed with him, Professor
00:15:44Of course I do
00:15:46The doctor knows his business
00:15:48They're steady now
00:15:50Here
00:15:52It wouldn't do to drop him, you know
00:15:57I'm all right
00:15:59It's just that I didn't sleep all night
00:16:02He was so sick
00:16:04Well, I'll help you home with him
00:16:06No, you won't, Professor
00:16:07You're tired
00:16:08I'll take them home
00:16:09Wait here while I get my shawl and lantern
00:16:11Good evening, Professor Christon
00:16:16Good evening, Maria
00:16:17Maria, didn't I tell you to wait outside for me?
00:16:20Mother, please
00:16:22May I not show Professor Christon
00:16:24My school papers?
00:16:26Why, of course, Maria
00:16:27Here, give them to me
00:16:28Oh, well, that's fine, Maria
00:16:34You're making great improvement
00:16:36That is because of your help, Professor Christon
00:16:40And you see
00:16:42My writing looks almost like yours
00:16:44Much better than mine, my dear
00:16:46Because I'm ready
00:16:48Oh, you're so good, Professor
00:16:56I'm glad to be of service, my dear
00:16:58Come, Maria
00:16:59Goodbye, Professor Christon
00:17:05Goodbye, Maria
00:17:05Don't forget to look at my papers
00:17:07I'll do it right away
00:17:35Goodbye, my dear
00:17:36I'll do it right away
00:17:36Goodbye, my dear
00:17:37Goodbye, my dear
00:20:43What's wrong, my friends?
00:20:44Katrina Malibat.
00:20:45She's missing from her bed.
00:20:46Her mother heard her scream.
00:20:48No.
00:20:49You don't think...
00:20:50Oh, yes, Mr. Bat.
00:20:51He's got Katrina.
00:20:52I know it.
00:20:53I know it.
00:20:54What shall we do?
00:20:56Quick.
00:20:57To the caves.
00:20:58It may not be too late.
00:20:59To the caves.
00:20:59To the caves.
00:21:00To the caves.
00:21:00It may not be too late.
00:21:08It may not be too late.
00:21:10It may be too late.
00:21:14That's it.
00:21:17Look.
00:21:20Look! Down there! Katrina!
00:21:50Another victim of the monster. Which of us will be next? Surely there's a curse upon us all.
00:22:07You superstitious fools with your talk of monsters and bats. There is no bat large enough to carry a human body to the caves.
00:22:14What else then, David? A man. He could even be one of us. Someone we might least suspect.
00:22:20No! It's a bat. I know it.
00:22:23Oh, you know it. Perhaps you've seen it then. Have you?
00:22:26No. No, never, never. But the master says it is a bat. A monster.
00:22:30A monster. Yes. A human monster.
00:22:33Master. David there thinks the monster is a human. There is maybe one of us. Tell him that it isn't true.
00:22:39Why, David. Professor Criston is right. Come, Zan. Let us go home.
00:22:50Neighbors. Neighbors. Let us not submit like cattle to these murders. Instead of running home as soon as the sun is down, let us remain on guard throughout the night, that we may catch this killer and destroy him.
00:23:03Who will volunteer to watch with me?
00:23:05Not I, David. I can guard my family better at home.
00:23:08Yes, I remain indoors with lights. You're right. Let us go to our homes.
00:23:33And many candles, good woman. With a monster abroad, sir, light is our only protection.
00:23:39A monster, you say? I do. A monster bat which swoops down upon its prey in the dark and leaves great gaping holes in their throats.
00:23:51Come closer. I'll stay here. Could you stay, say, over there just as well? I could.
00:24:01That's better. Now what is this old wife's tale? No tale it is, sir, but the truth. Within a fortnight, three of our townsfolk have fallen prey to this very thing.
00:24:19And so, the light? It never happens in the light. I see.
00:24:29Anders!
00:24:35Oh, my dear, dear friend.
00:24:39You haven't changed a bit.
00:24:42Nor you, after all these years.
00:24:45Oh, you come in troublous times, my friend.
00:24:48So this good woman has been telling me.
00:24:50Oh, this is my housekeeper, Mother Molly. And this is Dr. Bizet, Mother Molly. My foster father and my very best friend.
00:24:59Then I leave you in good company while I prepare a room for Dr. Bizet.
00:25:04Well, here. Sit down. And let us talk.
00:25:11What brings you here?
00:25:13You wrote of your betrothal? Of course I came.
00:25:16Well, I'm glad you've come. I need you, Anders.
00:25:20So?
00:25:21I've had a curious malady of late.
00:25:24Which is?
00:25:26I don't know.
00:25:27Strange headaches.
00:25:29Followed by vagueness and exhaustion.
00:25:36Well, enough of my small woes when we are besieged by tragedies.
00:25:41These murders?
00:25:43All unaccounted for.
00:25:45I'm not jesting when I tell you that the villagers fear a monstrous bat.
00:25:52The old superstition.
00:25:54A vampire bat.
00:25:56Oh, well, there's time enough for that.
00:25:59Now, ale.
00:26:00Here.
00:26:03Allow me.
00:26:11To our reunion.
00:26:18You couldn't help but love her, Anders.
00:26:20Her beauty of face is a true reflection of her soul.
00:26:24Then that must be Marguerite.
00:26:29Surely no one was ever more beautiful.
00:26:31It is.
00:26:37Professor Christiane.
00:26:41Professor Christiane, my dear.
00:26:46This is Dr. Dizé, Marguerite.
00:26:47My foster father and my good friend.
00:26:49Oh!
00:26:50And this is David.
00:26:51Marguerites' childhood school mate.
00:26:55Paul has told me the truth about you, my child.
00:26:57I confess I doubted him,
00:27:00until I saw yours.
00:27:02My father would be glad to see you boast.
00:27:04You have some refreshments, of course.
00:27:06Marguerite, I must go.
00:27:09David after your long walk he carried my heavy basket all the way and
00:27:15Besides you said you have the whole afternoon. I did till now. It's well to reach your home before dusk
00:27:21I do not fear a bat sir indeed
00:27:24Then what do you think this monster is a fiend playing upon the village superstitions?
00:27:31I see

00:28:57The knowledge makes me restless
00:29:01And Marguerite
00:29:03Marguerite must not know
00:29:06And of course you love paul deeply. Oh, of course
00:29:14That is I worship professor Criston Paul I mean
00:29:19He's such a great good wonderful man
00:29:23Oh, I will make him a good wife dr. Pezet and I'll try so hard to to live up to him
00:29:28I don't think you'll have to try my child

00:29:38But I do have to that in itself is goodness
00:29:46Thank you
00:29:48See the wind
00:29:59The bats abroad tonight
00:30:01You won't need his huge wings in all this low
00:30:05Watch beans has an egg you each time a candle flickers
00:30:09I feel the lying tongue in you Anna
00:30:13I'm not afraid
00:30:15She's well to be afraid when the devil hath spewed such a loathsome creature as this upon us
00:30:22Well, I'm not afraid I tell you
00:30:29You're right old woman
00:30:31It is ungodly not to be afraid
00:30:36There, the mistress wants you in her room
00:30:38Oh
00:30:43Then you think that marguerite doesn't love me
00:30:46Nothing of the sort
00:30:48The child loves you devotedly
00:30:51She worships you
00:30:53You're a kind of god to her to be lived up to to be worthier
00:30:57I suggested that she is not in love with you
00:31:01The difference is vast
00:31:02But if you're right
00:31:05Why hasn't she told me?
00:31:07Do you think her capable of hurting anyone?
00:31:10Above all her idol?
00:31:13Besides it's just possible the child doesn't know the difference
00:31:17Understand me Paul
00:31:19I may be entirely wrong
00:31:22I simply wanted you to be alert to a fact you may not have realized
00:31:26Talk to the child
00:31:38She's incapable of dissimulation
00:31:42You'll know
00:31:56What will do Anna?
00:32:12But mistress
00:32:12That will do
00:32:14Oh forgive me Anna I'm sorry I'm upset
00:32:17Restless
00:32:18Oh I feel this is something dreadful going to happen
00:32:21There there mistress
00:32:23We are all bolted in with Cain and Spurs
00:32:25What can happen?
00:32:27I know I guess I'm silly
00:32:30But I'm so worried about my father
00:32:45It's not going out Professor Chris Dunn
00:32:48To Marguerite's mother Molly
00:32:51Do you think I'll be safe with her?
00:32:53All her goodness couldn't keep that away
00:32:55But you need light
00:32:57A full moon
00:32:58But you walk through the wood
00:32:59True
00:33:00I'll take a lantern
00:33:01Must you go tonight?
00:33:02Yes mother Molly
00:33:04I'll keep the house well lit
00:33:06The devil himself couldn't keep me from doing that
00:33:23The devil himself
00:34:18The professor is retired, Mother Molly.
00:34:48I wish he had.
00:34:50I'm plagued at the thought of him being out in this wild night.
00:34:54Out, you say?
00:34:55I do.
00:34:56To Marguerite, he said.
00:34:59Marguerite?
00:35:00You fear for the professor?
00:35:02I do.
00:35:04Quick, a lantern.
00:35:06Marguerite.
00:35:07Marguerite.
00:35:08Boys.
00:35:11Marguerite.
00:35:21Mal legally.
00:35:21Don't be frightened.
00:35:47It's just the wind.
00:35:51Anna, it's Father.
00:35:55Hurry, let him in.
00:36:16Professor Cruston!
00:36:18I thought it was...
00:36:21Anna!
00:36:23Father!
00:36:24What is it?
00:36:25Who's free, what's happened?
00:36:31Miss Marloree.
00:36:31I'm here.
00:36:35What's happened?
00:36:37We don't know.
00:36:38Miss Marguerite!
00:36:44I'm here.
00:36:46What's happened?
00:36:47We don't know.
00:36:55Look!
00:36:58Anna!
00:36:59The bat!
00:37:08Bring some water.
00:37:15Yes.
00:37:28There, master.
00:37:29There.
00:37:30Now lean on me.
00:37:31Is he hurt?
00:37:32No.
00:37:34What happened?
00:37:36You swoon, master.
00:37:38You were with him?
00:37:39I saw him leave.
00:37:41I feared for him.
00:37:42I followed.
00:37:43And then?
00:37:43The lantern went out.
00:37:45He was unconscious.
00:37:46I have only now succeeded in restoring him.
00:37:48Yes, I remember.
00:37:51The lantern went out.
00:37:54It was dark.
00:37:55Dark, you say?
00:37:57Yes.
00:37:59Very dark.
00:38:03I can't remember anymore.
00:38:05You swooned, master.
00:38:06We are near Marguerite's house.
00:38:09Can you walk?
00:38:11Then come.
00:38:11Come quickly.
00:38:16What happened?
00:38:17We heard a scream, sir, and found her like this.
00:38:20And Marguerite?
00:38:21She's unhurt, sir.
00:38:22She swooned when she saw this.
00:38:23What?
00:38:45Oh, no.
00:38:45This was like the other victims
00:38:52But doctor
00:38:57Do you really believe it could have been a bat?
00:39:00What else?
00:39:02I saw a figure
00:39:04Gliding away in the dark
00:39:06And David was right
00:39:09The monster is a man
00:39:13And last night
00:39:28Was the fourth of these hideous tragedies
00:39:31I beg you, my friends
00:39:35For my sake
00:39:36For the sake of those who love you
00:39:39Yes, even for the sake of this hideous
00:39:42Evil-ridden fiend
00:39:43Guard yourselves constantly
00:39:46Burn every candle
00:39:48Every lamp you possess
00:39:49Through every minute of the dark
00:39:51Stand on guard
00:39:53Bolch your doors
00:39:55Don't move outside your homes
00:39:57And of all
00:39:59Don't for an instant
00:40:01Be without a light
00:40:03Now
00:40:07Go to your homes
00:40:09And pray
00:40:11How's Marguerite?
00:40:17The shop did her no good
00:40:18I was afraid to bring her
00:40:19And you?
00:40:21Oh, all right
00:40:23Then hurry home to Marguerite
00:40:25And stay with her
00:40:26Every instant
00:40:27The professor means
00:40:29Don't leave her alone
00:40:30With anyone
00:40:31Anyone at all
00:40:33Do you understand?
00:40:34I have your promise
00:40:37I shan't leave her
00:40:39With no one at all
00:40:42I understand, Dr. Brzee
00:40:45Good
00:40:46What's the matter?
00:40:50I saw him
00:40:51The thief, he's there in the shadow
00:40:53He's standing
00:40:54And killed him
00:40:55Evil
00:40:56Evil
00:40:56Evil
00:40:57Back, you're in there
00:40:58Yes
00:40:58There's your fiend
00:41:13Professor Christon Zan
00:41:15Yeah, your fiends
00:41:16Carry him away
00:41:16Master
00:41:17You have nothing to fear
00:41:19From Zan
00:41:20To your homes, my friends
00:41:22Come, my son
00:41:25Perhaps the woman
00:41:34Wasn't so wrong
00:41:35Three killings
00:41:37There were
00:41:37Near the professor's house
00:41:38And Zan
00:41:40Was at Marguerite's
00:41:41Last night
00:41:41What good could there be
00:41:42On a hunchback?
00:41:43But if he weren't good
00:41:44The professor wouldn't have him
00:41:45How'd he know?
00:41:47Oh, the professor's
00:41:48So good himself
00:41:49He wouldn't believe it anyway
00:41:50He was near
00:41:53Every crime
00:41:55Don't you see
00:42:01I don't know where I was
00:42:03In a swoon, yes
00:42:05But it's incredibly odd
00:42:07That I was unconscious
00:42:08During every one of these crimes
00:42:10These headaches
00:42:12What are they?
00:42:15Why do they come on me?
00:42:18Last night, then
00:42:19Tell me
00:42:20Tell me
00:42:22Unconscious, master
00:42:23Yes, but what did I do?
00:42:26Tell me
00:42:27You laid it on the ground
00:42:28What did I try to revive you?
00:42:30From the moment I swooned?
00:42:31I swooned
00:42:32You swear?
00:42:33I do, master
00:42:35On that holy book?
00:42:40I swear, master
00:42:42Until this malady is past Anders
00:42:51I cannot marry Marguerite
00:42:54You're right, Paul
00:42:57You must tell her
00:42:59Tonight
00:43:00While your mind is made up
00:43:03No, no, no, master
00:43:03Don't go
00:43:04Why not?
00:43:05The fiend
00:43:05He may be abroad
00:43:06Your master doesn't fear the fiend
00:43:08Go, my friend
00:43:12Release the girl
00:43:14The light
00:43:28Must not go out
00:43:30Why do you follow him?
00:43:44I fear for him
00:43:45The fiend
00:43:46You lied
00:43:47You lied upon that book
00:43:48You were not with him
00:43:49Every moment in the wood
00:43:50The truth, man
00:43:52You must tell me the truth
00:43:54I have sworn
00:44:01I beg you, David
00:44:03Not to do this
00:44:04They must know
00:44:05Loving me, you cannot wed the professor
00:44:07I haven't said so
00:44:09There's no need
00:44:09We know
00:44:10My father must return in a moment
00:44:13Oh, please, David
00:44:15Wait a little while
00:44:16Marguerite, you're in danger
00:44:18I know it
00:44:19I can feel it
00:44:20My place is by your side
00:44:22To watch over you
00:44:22Protect you
00:44:23Oh, Marguerite
00:44:25I'm afraid to leave you alone
00:44:26My father
00:44:30Oh, David
00:44:31I beg you
00:44:32If you love me, go
00:44:33All right
00:44:53Thank you, my child
00:44:57You seem worried, Marguerite
00:45:04What is it?
00:45:08Oh, father
00:45:09Oh, that's all right
00:45:12You lie, I say
00:45:14All lies
00:45:15Without his light
00:45:16You couldn't find him in the woods
00:45:17You were not together
00:45:19My master
00:45:19I must be with him
00:45:20Why?
00:45:21Tell me why
00:45:22The truth, man
00:45:23Now is the time to tell it
00:45:25I must know
00:45:27I want to help you fool
00:45:29But before I can
00:45:30I must know
00:45:32My master
00:45:32Please
00:45:33What do you fear for him?
00:45:35If you are the monster
00:45:37Your master is safe from you
00:45:39If he is the fiend
00:45:40He can fear nothing from himself
00:45:42No, no, don't say such things
00:45:43Then
00:45:45Then it's true
00:45:47And you
00:45:49You knew
00:45:51My poor forsaken friend
00:45:56Not forsaken, sir
00:46:01True
00:46:04Not forsaken
00:46:07When did you first know?
00:46:12Frida
00:46:13She was passing near the house
00:46:15I heard her scream
00:46:17Then I saw my master
00:46:19I myself
00:46:26Carried her body to the caves
00:46:28Then I brought him here
00:46:30He never knew he'd risen from his bed
00:46:33And then?
00:46:35After that
00:46:36I followed every move
00:46:39But it was always my mischance to be too late
00:46:42What about the young woman?
00:46:44Katrina?
00:46:46The same
00:46:47Again I was too late
00:46:49You can cure him, Dr. Bizet
00:46:53Take him away
00:46:54Tonight
00:46:54New places
00:46:56New faces
00:46:57Rest in your good care
00:46:58No one here will ever know
00:47:01We'll decide that
00:47:03When he returns
00:47:04We shouldn't have let him go
00:47:06I feared that
00:47:08Paul might be the fiend
00:47:10The boy was marked at birth
00:47:12But he had to release
00:47:15Marguerite from her promise
00:47:16But Miss Marguerite
00:47:17Do you not fear for her?
00:47:20Her father has given me his oath
00:47:21He would not leave her
00:47:22Still I fear
00:47:25We should be with my master
00:47:27Yes, yes, come
00:47:29You may be delayed
00:47:48I'll go on
00:47:49What is it, my friends?
00:47:59We think we know who the fiend is
00:48:00We must see the professor
00:48:02He is not here
00:48:03Is it Marguerite's house?
00:48:05And then?
00:48:05There too
00:48:07Father
00:48:22I wish you'd tell me what's worrying you
00:48:25Perhaps I should
00:48:28I'll go
00:48:32Oh, Paul
00:48:42Good evening, sir
00:48:43Come in
00:48:44Thank you
00:48:45Oh, Marguerite
00:48:48Professor Christian
00:48:49Dear child
00:48:55You're just in time
00:48:59Father was going to tell me something
00:49:00Oh, let that go now
00:49:02You have happier things to think about
00:49:05You're not leaving us
00:49:06Of course
00:49:08I
00:49:09I'd rather you stayed
00:49:11Remember your oath to Anders
00:49:13Why
00:49:14That couldn't include you
00:49:16Perhaps it's as well
00:49:21We are well lighted
00:49:23And what I have to say
00:49:27Is only for you
00:49:28Please
00:49:31Marguerite
00:49:44Lately
00:49:46A strange malady
00:49:48Has possessed me
00:49:49Something
00:49:50I can't explain
00:49:51Nor has my good friend
00:49:54As yet uncovered it
00:49:55What have you done?
00:50:03Relight it instantly
00:50:04But I
00:50:05I have no tapers
00:50:06What is it?
00:50:10What's wrong?
00:50:12I only thought to spare your eyes
00:50:14Forgive
00:50:25I'm not quite myself
00:50:29It was kind of you
00:50:31To blow it out
00:50:31Your headaches?
00:50:43Unbearably at times
00:50:44It's the malady
00:50:46Of which I spoke
00:50:46The pain becomes so great
00:50:49Sometimes I swoon
00:50:51And am unconscious
00:50:52For a while
00:50:52I'm sorry, professor
00:50:55Paul
00:50:56But after we're married
00:50:57I'll take such good care of you
00:50:59That these spells
00:51:00Will disappear
00:51:00That's what I came to say
00:51:03My dear
00:51:03There'll be no marriage
00:51:05Till this malady is cured
00:51:06But why?
00:51:08I couldn't burden you
00:51:10With so much care
00:51:11I love you too well
00:51:13Marguerite
00:51:14That's no care
00:51:15I'd be grateful
00:51:17For the chance to serve you
00:51:18Even in so small a thing
00:51:20Serve me?
00:51:22Of course you would
00:51:24My child
00:51:25But you see
00:51:26I can't accept
00:51:27I release you
00:51:30From your promise
00:51:31Until you're well?
00:51:34Until I'm well
00:51:35I pray it won't be long
00:51:39Whatever happens
00:51:41Will you remember this?
00:51:45I love you, Marguerite
00:51:46Stop
00:52:02You foolish child
00:52:04You don't know what to do
00:52:04But it was torturing your eyes
00:52:06I'll get tapers
00:52:07All the lights must be lit
00:52:09I feel seraphine
00:52:10A candle still burns
00:52:11And the moon makes the room
00:52:12Bright as day
00:52:13There's even a fire
00:52:16It's out
00:52:26No matter
00:52:28See how bright the room is
00:52:29And besides
00:52:31How could I be afraid
00:52:32When I'm with you?
00:52:36Marguerite
00:52:36I haven't told you all
00:52:39I'm afraid
00:52:41Afraid
00:52:43Afraid
00:52:43Afraid
00:52:44Of the monster?
00:52:45No
00:52:46For the monster
00:52:48I'm afraid
00:52:58I am the fiend
00:53:01You are ill to talk that way
00:53:09No
00:53:10It's worse than that
00:53:11I don't know what I did last night
00:53:14Until Zan found me in the wood
00:53:16What does Zan say?
00:53:19He swore he saw me fall
00:53:21And was with me every minute
00:53:23Well surely that proves
00:53:26He may have lied
00:53:27He didn't lie
00:53:29It's only your illness
00:53:31That makes you think
00:53:32These dreadful thoughts
00:53:33Do you really think so?
00:53:39If I only knew
00:53:40If I only could be sure
00:53:43You shall know
00:53:48I'll prove it to you
00:53:51Marguerite, what have you done?
00:53:55The monster cannot kill with light
00:53:56Sit down, Paul
00:53:59Here in the dark with me
00:54:01And soon you'll know
00:54:04You're not the fiend
00:54:05My head
00:54:09It's odd
00:54:11It should be worse
00:54:12Without the lights
00:54:13Lie back
00:54:15And rest
00:54:16I'm afraid
00:54:22No need to be
00:54:24Marguerite
00:54:34It's growing dark
00:54:37Only a cloud crossing the moon
00:54:41A light
00:54:43Quick, a light
00:54:46Rest still
00:54:48It will soon pass
00:54:50My head
00:54:51A light
00:54:53A light
00:54:56A light
00:54:56Paul
00:54:57Paul
00:54:58Paul
00:55:02Paul
00:55:06Paul
00:55:16Paul
00:55:18A light
00:55:19A light
00:55:20Get to the light
00:55:21Marguerite
00:55:24Is she hurt
00:55:25She's unharmed
00:55:26Bring her over here
00:55:27Wait, what?
00:55:29Way here
00:55:30There he is
00:55:32It's he, the fiend
00:55:33He attacked your professor
00:55:34He stayed with his blood
00:55:36His silence proves his guilt
00:55:38Oh, no.
00:56:05He'll soon come to.
00:56:07What happened here?
00:56:08I heard her scream and I rushed in.
00:56:09From where?
00:56:10You swore not to leave her.
00:56:12Well, she was with Professor Christon.
00:56:14Were you here?
00:56:15I was outside.
00:56:16I feared for Marguerite and waited on the terrace.
00:56:28Are you sure, Marguerite?
00:56:30Quite sure?
00:56:32Positive.
00:56:33The monster held me fast.
00:56:35I felt his bared teeth against my throat.
00:56:39I screamed and as I did,
00:56:42Zan came through that window.
00:56:44How can you be sure?
00:56:46Outside was lighter than it was in the room.
00:56:49I couldn't mistake his limping crooked form.
00:56:52It was the last thing I remember before I swooned.
00:56:56Then who, who was the fiend?
00:57:02I don't know.
00:57:03David, go.
00:57:06Zan must be saved.
00:57:15He's coming too.
00:57:17Will you be good enough to leave us?
00:57:18There we go.
00:57:31He's headed for the cave.
00:57:32We'll grab him there.
00:57:33Come on, man.
00:57:37Oh, Anders.
00:57:40Anders, what is it?
00:57:42I, I swooned.
00:57:44The fiend attacked Marguerite.
00:57:49Is she hurt?
00:57:50No.
00:57:51She was saved in time.
00:57:54Anders,
00:57:55was it I?
00:58:05Anders,
00:58:06tell me,
00:58:08tell me the truth.
00:58:10I will.
00:58:15It started nearly 40 years ago, Paul,
00:58:19in the darkest depths of Africa.
00:58:22The only white people were your parents
00:58:25and my dearest friend,
00:58:28Dr. Dupre.
00:58:28A monstrous bat had fastened to your mother's throat.
00:58:43They beat it off,
00:58:45but the harm was already done.
00:58:49You were born that night, Paul,
00:58:53condemned to live.
00:58:55It was Dr. Dupre
00:58:59who buried your parents
00:59:01and a few years later
00:59:03told me all.
00:59:06Before he died,
00:59:07he entrusted you to my care.
00:59:10He warned me to watch
00:59:11for your deadly mark,
00:59:13but you grew normally
00:59:14and when manhood was reached,
00:59:17the danger seemed past.
00:59:20Then why,
00:59:21why has it come upon me now?
00:59:25Exhaustion
00:59:26overworked.
00:59:29And if I'm not cured,
00:59:32I'll go on
00:59:33and on.
00:59:36The attacks
00:59:38will come closer
00:59:40and closer together
00:59:41until
00:59:43you will entirely become
00:59:45the loathsome thing
00:59:48your madness
00:59:50makes you.
00:59:51Isn't it strange
00:59:54they never caught me?
00:59:57Not strange at all.
00:59:59Your faithful Zan
01:00:00knew from the first
01:00:01and protected you.
01:00:03Even now,
01:00:04he's led them off
01:00:05to give you an opportunity
01:00:06to escape.
01:00:08Escape?
01:00:10After what I've done?
01:00:11But Anders,
01:00:18Zan is in danger.
01:00:20We must go to him.
01:00:22Come.
01:00:29Dr. Bizet
01:00:29can cure my master's malady.
01:00:32I pray thee,
01:00:36save him.
01:00:38Save my master.
01:00:42Let him out of your company.
01:00:44Walk in there last time.
01:00:45We'll be lost in your summer.

01:01:05No!
01:01:06Seave him in the cave.
01:01:07And let him rot!
01:01:08But we can't see him rot.
01:01:09Ah!
01:01:10But we could watch him burn.

01:01:31He heard her scream, said save her from the thief.
01:01:33But he admitted his guilt.
01:01:35Then who is the thief?
01:01:36Yes!
01:01:37Yes!
01:01:38Yes!
01:01:39Yes!
01:01:40Yes!

01:01:49He lied about the master!
01:01:50I know him guilty!
01:01:52That's just the truth.
01:01:53Learn the blasphemer!
01:01:54Find him!
01:01:56Find him!
01:01:57He's in league with the thief!
