00:00Here we go, getting ready, Anaheim won.
00:03Here we go.
00:06Oh!
00:08And it's Dungy getting the spike hole shot, and Villopoto is second, and Stewart is third, and where's Reed?
00:17Can you believe it, Ryan Dungy?
00:21Stepping up to the Big Bikes, grabs the hole shot.
00:24This is what everybody wanted to see, right here.
00:27Chad Reed is back in about sixth position, not where he needed to be.
00:32This is going to be a great battle.
00:35Watch to see if Stewart or any of these guys pick up on some of these new lines.
00:40There's a couple different ways to do these rhythm sections.
00:45There's Andrew Short, it's up in there.
00:47Strupp is in there in the 45.
00:49James overjumped that triple, a little front end high there.
00:53No big deal, though.
00:54But you notice, just the same as in the heat race, it may be different out there, but it sure seems like James Stewart is being extra patient this year.
01:04He's not going out there trying to pass.
01:06There's Reed.
01:07Reed having problems on his monster Kawasaki, the first race on the new bike, and the two-time champ is off.
01:14Going to the mechanics area.
01:15Something's wrong with his bike, Jeff.
01:17Front wheel.
01:20They're looking down at the front end.
01:21Looks like there, that's on the front brake side.
01:24Now, if the front brake rotor got bent, okay.
01:28Yeah, you can't ride with that, yeah.
01:30But I'm surprised it's not fixable.
01:34Oh, look at Villopoto making a mistake.
01:36Villopoto made a mistake behind James, and I think James just wants to get through Anaheim 1.
01:41If I'm, you know, if I'm being honest, that's what I think his plan is.
01:45There goes Chad Reed.
01:47You sure?
01:48Up the tunnel and out into the pit area.
01:52Devastating for his title hopes here.
01:55This is not how Chad Reed wanted to start 2010.
01:59See how James Stewart just cruised around the inside, stayed out of all the ruts.
02:03I know Ryan's riding good.
02:06He had a great offseason, and what a great way to start the season, and anything can happen.
02:14Let's go to Aaron with Chad Reed.
02:16Guys, a devastating moment for Chad Reed here at the season opener.
02:20Chad, you're walking away.
02:21This is almost deja vu.
02:22What happened to James last year?
02:24What exactly happened?
02:25Yeah, and I guess, you know, James pulled it off last year, so disappointing.
02:30It's been a rough day, and, you know, I was just trying to get out front,
02:33and it was just my racing move, you know, Stroop.
02:36We were all amongst everyone, and Stroop turned down early,
02:39and I kind of rammed right into him, and my front wheel went, and he split peg,
02:44and immediately I felt it all break.
02:46Spokes.
02:47What do you do?
02:47You live and learn, and that's what happens when you get a shitty-ass start like that.
02:51James is your ultimate rival out there, but what does it do for your hopes,
02:55knowing that he was able to come back from what happened last year?
02:58You know, you just got to concentrate, you know, like you did last year.
03:00You know, we race each and every week and go for it.
03:03You know, this is not the ideal, but, like I said, it was a rough day,
03:07and we'll watch the main event from the sidelines.
03:10This is the first time for me ever.
03:12Tough day for Chad Reed.
03:13Regroup, we'll see you back next weekend.
03:15Well, we apologize for Chad there.
03:18Obviously, the frustration getting the better of him there in his interview.
03:21But James Stewart right there getting sideways in the woods.
03:25He tried jumping through him, and when he jumped out, it goes sideways.
03:28Here we go.
03:29Watch Chad Reed.
03:30Now he's talking about Stroop on the 45.
03:32Gets over into him.
03:34Got into Stewart, too.
03:37Wow, isn't that—I mean, Stroop is a wild card here.
03:40He's riding lights east, you know, and he's in there mixing it up.
03:45Now let's see if they get together one more time.
03:46I can't see what's wrong with it, but obviously his foot pegs.
03:51Yeah, he was talking about if the foot peg gets into the front wheel,
03:54it can break all of the spokes out.
03:56And if it was the brake rotor, he might be able to ride with a bent brake rotor,
03:59but with broken spokes, end of the race.
04:04Well, this one's far from over.
04:05We're only a quarter of the way in, scheduled for 20 laps.
04:08And Stewart has not been able to get around Dungy yet.
04:12It doesn't even look like James is riding hard.
04:14I know he's so smooth and just kind of cruising.
04:17But I can tell you who he is trying to ride hard.
04:19That's our leader, Ryan Dungy.
04:21New number.
04:22Lap time's down to 57s, and there's top six guys are all there.
04:27See Stewart here, doubling and then doubling again.
04:30That's an odd, odd section.
04:32And here it comes, Filippoto.
04:34He's right behind Stroop having problems of his own.
04:38And you know he don't want to get hurt
04:40because he is supposed to be a contender
04:42for the Lights Championship in the East Coast.
04:45That's right.
04:46He is a fill-in, actually, for Moss,
04:48who got hurt, Ryan Dungy's teammate.
04:52This is a very strange beginning to this main event here in Anaheim.
04:58Listen, the gap 1.3 seconds.
05:01It seems like Jason Lawrence has problems, too, Aaron.
05:04There's problems happening everywhere down here on the floor, you guys.
05:07But you're taking a look at the number 338 of Jason Lawrence,
05:10riding his way off the track, back up into the pits, through the tunnel.
05:13What exactly happened?
05:14It was pretty straightforward.
05:16He did get out of jail just the day of Christmas.
05:19He's not prepared.
05:20He said he's absolutely exhausted.
05:22He's going to call it a day.
05:23He only raced or rode six times in the last five months.
05:27And we go back to the battle for the lead in that gap.
05:33Doesn't look like it's shrinking at all between Stewart and Dungy.
05:37Okay, we talked about the fact that Stewart might be wanting to take it a little bit easy,
05:40but how easy can you take it?
05:42Eventually, at some point, you've got to go after this guy, don't you?
05:44Well, yeah, you do.
05:46But at the same time, he's probably thinking,
05:47ah, Ryan's a rookie.
05:49He's going to make his mistakes, and I'll capitalize on that.
05:54But at the same time, Ryan is at that breaking point.
05:56You know, I mean, we've still got a lot of racing left.
05:58But Ryan's at the breaking point to where you're going down the section of the track,
06:02and you turn, and once you can see that you've made it through the turn
06:06and the guy isn't behind you, it gets very easy for the leader.
06:09Let's go back to Aaron.
06:11Well, guys, Austin Strip is getting on the back of his bike here.
06:14He's all dirty and dusty after he ended up getting in a collision with Josh Hill.
06:19Austin, take us through what happened from your perspective.
06:22What?
06:23Take us through what just happened from your perspective.
06:25I just got into a hill.
06:27He just kind of hit me, so I guess I was racing, but whatever.
06:33Tell us about getting into Reid at the start.
06:35Ah, I don't know.
06:38It was good.
06:39I went down, so it was no good.
06:41These riders are falling like victims down here on the floor.
06:44Good night for the rider out of North Carolina.
06:46Austin Strip.
06:47It looks like Stewart's starting to turn it on here, Jeff.
06:49Yeah, Stewart really has, I mean, we've almost criticized him in the past for riding at only one pace.
06:56Only wide open and always being on the edge.
06:59This is a more mature James Stewart.
07:03We've always said, you know, you don't have to go that fast to win.
07:07You know, I'm not trying to take anything away from Ryan Dungy either, because they're starting to drop Bilopodo by close to five seconds.
07:15I like, so is Dungy just going that fast?
07:19I think he is.
07:20Okay, these guys are saying 56.7.
07:23I, I, I tell you what, I do like James Stewart's lines better.
07:27If you watch, he's missing all the breaking bumps.
07:29He's, you know, he has some great lines.
07:32He cut the gap in half.
07:33Yeah, yeah.
07:34Well, and then that pressure's going to start to get, start to get applied to Ryan Dungy,
07:39who's never been in this situation like this.
07:42Stewart, you see just how calmly, patiently, but also if you're too relaxed, Ricky, then your concentration kind of goes away.
07:50You have to ride at your pace and at your concentration level.
07:54It's hard to ride too easy.
07:56No, absolutely.
07:58And we, we all know, and James will even tell you that he feels comfortable riding that edge when we've been critical on him.
08:04And even when I was racing, that's him.
08:07I was the same way.
08:08That's, that's what, that's how we ride.
08:10So whatever works for him.
08:12Two-time AMA and four-time Australian Supercross champ, Chad Reed, watch it.
08:16What's going through his mind, Ricky?
08:17Because we said you can lose the title here.
08:20It's going to, he's just, he can't believe it.
08:23And it's going to be a long season.
08:24It's almost to the point where you're like, my season's over.
08:29But, you know, you can't really have that attitude.
08:32But it does run through your mind.
08:33You just have to overcome it.
08:34He was in that epic crash a year ago right here with James Stewart.
08:38And that was the only time he hit the ground in all of 2009.
08:41So if he keeps the bike upright for the rest of the season, you never know where this season could go for him.
08:46But I'll tell you what I see here.
08:48This, I mean, look at the colorways with, that Dungy has going, everything.
08:52It's got that classic Suzuki, almost that Roger DeCoster-esque feeling to it, you know?
08:58This is Villopoto and Andrew Short battling over third.
09:02Villopoto right there, the monster Kawasaki.
09:06Short on the Honda behind him, giving Chase the Red Bull back to entry number 29.
09:13Man, they have really ran off and left Villopoto.
09:16I thought that Villopoto would have been a little bit closer.
09:19I don't know what's happening.
09:20I spoke with Ryan's grandfather at the press conference on Thursday.
09:23He said he thought it would be about round three when Ryan would really be on pace with the rest of the guys.
09:30That's when we come back here for Anaheim 2.
09:32Yeah.
09:33Well, all I know is there's two guys that are just handling it right now.
09:37And that's Ryan Dungy and James Stewart.
09:40Guys are working.
09:41Kevin Windham running in fifth.
09:44And Brayton is sixth.
09:45Hill is seventh.
09:46Millsaps eighth.
09:47Tedesco ninth.
09:48Grant Weinstein in tenth.
09:51Josh Grant, who won this race a year ago, by the way,
09:53running 20th to not start the main event.
09:57Here's Short inside of Villopoto.
10:00Is Villopoto tired, Jeff?
10:02That's interesting.
10:03He's been off with injuries.
10:06He's looked pretty good all day long.
10:08Oh, here comes the old man, Windham.
10:10Windham with a great move as Villopoto fumbled through that corner.
10:14Now, you want to see it pretty riding style.
10:15You need to watch number 14.
10:17That guy is silky smooth, man.
10:20Look at this.
10:21This is...
10:21I can't believe this.
10:22This is great to see.
10:23Look how rutted those turns are.
10:25Two, three deep ruts coming out of there.
10:27And these rhythm sections, they really have slowed the riders down.
10:31You know, the past five, six seasons, we've seen these 454 strokes just...
10:36I mean, they just jump anything in sight, just like this here.
10:40Okay?
10:40You wouldn't have done that back in the 90s.
10:41But that first rhythm section, how they have that half jump beforehand, just completely kills the momentum.
10:47And even with all the traction there is for tonight, and all the horsepower that these bikes are putting out, they just can't get that first rhythm section down like they want to.
10:55Pass the halfway point.
10:56Pass the halfway point.
10:58Tungy continues to lead.
10:59Tungy continues to lead, and he's got a 2.6-second gap over Stewart.
11:04Short, Wyndham, Villopoto.
11:06Hill and Millsaps battling for sixth.
11:09Let's show you where that battle is.
11:10There goes Villopoto.
11:12He's got fifth.
11:13Here's Hill.
11:16There's Millsaps.
11:17There's Brayton and Tedesco.
11:19They're all running together.
11:21Great runs for those guys.
11:24Wow, I'm telling you, look at this.
11:25We've got Tedesco in ninth.
11:27Okay?
11:27This guy is a multi-time Supercross Lights champion.
11:31Uh-oh.
11:32Oh, he's going for the position on Brayton.
11:35It makes the move on the inside.
11:37That's eight.
11:38Okay, that's some Supercross skills, Darren.
11:40Tedesco hasn't had the most time on this new Yamaha here either.
11:44But he looks good on this thing.
11:46He is charging.
11:47So much of it is mental and in the heart, and Ivan has a lot of that.
11:52Absolutely.
11:53I mean, the guy, he's had a rough past two years, but he looks so good.
11:59There's Millsaps.
12:01Davey running in seven.
12:03Tedesco chasing him down now.
12:08He'll probably get Davey.
12:09I know Ivan's in really great shape, working with old-time Supercross champion Johnny O'Meara.
12:14You know he's got him on a good program.
12:16Well, you know what's interesting here is that Tedesco was on the factory Honda team last year, for the last few years.
12:23And when it all shook out, they had two riders, and Tedesco was out on that deal.
12:29And Tedesco, he won an MX National, Motocross of Nations.
12:34I mean, he had a really great season at times last year, but he found himself on the out.
12:41Fortunate for him.
12:42Valley Yamaha stepped in, gave him a ride here, and he's proven that that was a wise decision.
12:51There he is.
12:52He's going to work.
12:52It might take him a couple laps.
12:54So I think this track's very hard to pass on, as we've seen in the past.
12:58How about this?
12:59Ryan Dungy, 4.3 seconds in front of James Stewart.
13:05Josh Grant got a huge win here a year ago.
13:08What a statement this would be if Ryan Dungy could pull this off.
13:12Won a Supercross Lights championship in 2009.
13:16Won the Motocross Lights championship in 2009.
13:19And a part of the Motocross Denations team that won the title in 2009.
13:24What a way to start 2010.
13:26If he can get to the three more lap to go mark, it's on.
13:30Yeah, there's no doubt about it.
13:31He's pulled out here.
13:33About three seconds on Stewart.
13:34Stewart, I think, squeaked it out that time.
13:36He was, yeah, he was a little bit faster that last lap.
13:40Stewart's starting to pour it on right now.
13:41He has to, Jeff.
13:42He cannot come out of here without a win.
13:44Especially if he sees Chad Reed is out.
13:48I mean, this is where James has got to jump on it now and get a stranglehold on these guys.
13:52Well, let's watch Stewart.
13:53We can tell by the body language here whether or not Stewart's really going to pour it off.
13:57Because it really, like I said, it just was odd.
14:02It's just odd.
14:03He looked way too calm and way too smooth from what we've seen him in the past.
14:07Yeah, I think, looking at Dungy, though, the last lap, it looked like, I don't know, maybe, maybe he's a little tired or something.
14:14Well, I'm sure.
14:15The last time I tell the story.
14:16Hey, don't forget, Dungy now up to the Supercross class.
14:19He's going to run a longer main than he did in the Lights class.
14:22Will that come into play?
14:24Yeah, we got, yeah, James starting to pour it on.
14:26He is almost two seconds faster that lap.
14:28Let's see what he does.
14:29Kevin Windham has moved up the third.
14:31Let's see how Caved up pulled that off on the 14.
14:34Watch this here.
14:35Watch Windham.
14:36He just hammers on the throttle here.
14:39He uses the lapper to his advantage.
14:41Oh, knocks Andrew Short out of the way.
14:44Says, dude, I'm out of here.
14:45I'm going to the podium.
14:46And you called him an old man.
14:47Boy, that's racing like a tough youngster right there.
14:51Kevin Windham on the charge.
14:52Now look at the momentum that Stewart was carrying into that, into those four jumps there.
14:57I like Ryan's line right there.
14:59I think it's a little bit faster.
15:00You don't go as high.
15:02Okay, now think about the difference here.
15:03Stewart's won in the 30s.
15:05He's won 30-some races here.
15:07Okay.
15:08Dungy right there.
15:09Big mistake.
15:10The pressure's starting to mount here.
15:12He's starting to think about it.
15:13That's the comfort zone that Stewart has.
15:16He knows he can ride behind and watch the number five, wait for a mistake.
15:20And look how this thing is closed up.
15:22Ricky, if you could talk to Ryan Dungy right now, what would you tell him?
15:25I just try to say stay loose as you can and set up for your turns early.
15:29You know, if he's tight, you've got to break early, roll through the turns, try not to charge too hard.
15:35As you can see, James, it's not...
15:37Look at James' commitment.
15:41Unbelievable.
15:41The crowd getting into it.
15:43Yeah, I think Ryan might be a little tight here.
15:47I don't want to speak for him, but he's, you know, he's not the rider that he was 10 laps ago.
15:52At the same time, he is doing a heck of a job.
15:55He sure does.
15:56No doubt about it.
15:56Here comes Stewart.
15:58Now, how aggressive will Ryan Dungy be in battling with him, too?
16:01Yeah, I know, Ryan's a pretty, pretty smooth and calm rider.
16:05Uh-oh, he makes a mistake.
16:06Oh, look at James trying the outside, cutting back.
16:12We got a battle for the lead, and Anaheim won.
16:15Three laps to go.
16:16Well, at Dungy, last year, he had pressure all the way through in Supercross, Lights, and Motocross, and Motocross of Nations.
16:22He's used to it.
16:23Stewart trying the inside.
16:24He stays in there.
16:25Yeah.
16:26Not yet.
16:26Got him now.
16:27Come on, Ryan, you got to go.
16:28Let it be no mistake.
16:33Whatever happens, Ryan Dungy is riding phenomenal.
16:37Phenomenal.
16:38He wasn't supposed to win.
16:40James is the guy that's supposed to win.
16:42As you can see right now, James is putting a good lap in.
16:45He's been riding good all day.
16:48And maybe this is what he was doing, taking it easy at the beginning so he could lay it down in the second half.
16:54You know, he is absolutely incredible.
16:56Yeah.
16:56He is just incredible.
16:59Yep.
16:59Absolutely.
16:59He was four seconds down with a handful of laps to go and just ate him alive.
17:05Absolutely.
17:07Wow.
17:08Look at that, man.
17:09Stewart, he just dropped his lap time.
17:12There they are cheering him on.
17:13Two to go.
17:14Ricky, does it get to a point when you're at that level, which you certainly were at when you were racing out here,
17:20that you almost have to set up new challenges for yourself?
17:23Is it kind of one of those things where he said, you know what, let me see how far back I can go?
17:28Okay, four seconds.
17:29Let me see if I can reel it in now.
17:30Well, absolutely.
17:31You know, and he's trying to make it fun, too, as well.
17:34I mean, he wants to win, no doubt about it.
17:37You know, so whatever he's got to do to keep himself motivated, but now it looks like it's easy for him.
17:41Hey, Dungy's staying right in there, though.
17:43He ain't giving up one bit here.
17:44And one little mistake by the reigning champion, James Stewart, that he could hand the win over to the rookie, Ryan Dungy.
17:51I mean, he's right there.
17:52He's right there.
17:53Let me tell you this.
17:55The gap between Dungy and Kevin Windham, who is running in third, is 29 seconds.
18:01That'll tell you the pace that Ryan Dungy's been running at here tonight.
18:04Last lap right here, coming up.
18:08Ryan Dungy is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the 450 class,
18:12and he's even got a shot at James before this is all done.
18:16Here he comes.
18:16He's got to go.
18:17He's going after him.
18:19If he wants to get Stewart, he needs to go now.
18:21The whoop section's going to be key to this.
18:23Yep.
18:24Look at this.
18:25Here he comes.
18:26He needs to go.
18:27He's not done.
18:28Dungy going for it.
18:30Oh.
18:33He's right there.
18:35He squares him up.
18:36Here he goes.
18:36He squares him up.
18:37Charge into the singles.
18:38What's he going to do?
18:40Stewart's got a battle on his hand.
18:43There you go inside.
18:45You've got to stay up.
18:46I like Dungy's line here.
18:48Oh, Stewart's going to take him wide.
18:50He tries to cut inside.
18:53Oh, Dungy slides out.
18:54What a, oh man, what a problem for Dungy.
18:58It's over.
18:59But James Stewart knows he had a fight on his hands here tonight at Anaheim 1.
19:04But he takes the win.
19:06And the series points lead headed to Chase Field in Phoenix.
19:11But what a ride by Ryan Dungy.
19:13You know what?
19:15Ryan Dungy has no reason.
19:17I mean, that was, that guy, he, that was unbelievable.
19:20And don't think that James Stewart is going to be thinking about him all this week.
19:24If I'm James Stewart, I'm thinking a win was great.
19:27But you know what?
19:28That was a pretty good ride.
19:29And I'm telling you, another guy with a good ride.
19:3114, Kevin Windham.
19:33The old man, as you say.
19:34The veteran, as I meant to say.
19:37Taking the experience.
19:38Great job, Kevin Windham.
19:40That was an awesome ride.
19:41Way to go, Kevin Windham.
19:43He takes a hard-earned third place here at Anaheim.
19:47But James Stewart accomplished the first part of the mission towards another championship.
19:53When Anaheim won.
19:55And he did it with an incredible ride.
19:57At one point, over four seconds behind Dungy.
20:02And he ate him alive to take the lead away.
20:05And then fought him off on the final lap.
20:08Another impressive performance.
20:10I'm telling you, I cannot believe.
20:13Unpredictable.
20:14I mean, he almost, he almost, he almost had it.
20:17I thought he was going to get the guy.
20:18If you read the box score tomorrow in the paper, you're going to see James Stewart wanting to go,
20:22ah, just what we expected.
20:23But you know what?
20:24This is going to be quite a championship.
20:26And we're going to hear from all these guys when we come back.
20:29Stewart, Dungy, Windham.
20:31We'll hear from them all.
20:32And Speed's live coverage of Anaheim 1 continues.
