00:00A new survey from the RAC shows nearly three quarters of UK drivers who paid for parking
00:07using a mobile app in the past year ran into difficulties.
00:12The most common issue, by a wide margin, was poor mobile phone signal in the car park,
00:18cited by 70% of respondents.
00:22Other problems included apps failing to recognise the car park location, system crashes and
00:28payment failures.
00:31The research also found that many drivers still prefer more traditional payment methods.
00:37Bank cards or digital wallet options like Apple Pay or Google Pay are the top choice for
00:4246% of drivers, while 33% still opt for cash.
00:48Just 30% prefer to pay using a mobile app.
00:53RAC Senior Policy Officer Rod Dennis said there's no doubt mobile apps have an important and
01:00increasing role to play when it comes to parking our vehicles.
01:04But our figures show there's still plenty drivers find frustrating about using them.
01:09Whether that's a lack of mobile signal, problems registering bank cards, or the app crashing
01:15or behaving strangely.
01:18According to the survey, nearly two thirds of drivers using parking apps have at least
01:23two installed on their phones.
01:26Over a third have three or more, and 15% have four or more.
01:30The government is hoping to simplify things with the new national parking platform which
01:36launched earlier this year.
01:38If widely adopted, it would allow drivers to use a single app to pay for parking, regardless
01:43of the operator.
01:45So far, 10 local authorities have signed on, including Manchester, Liverpool and Coventry,
01:52with more expected to follow.
01:54Dennis added, the launch of the national parking platform, which we welcome, should spell the
01:59end of drivers needing to download lots of separate apps just to park and simplify
02:04things enormously.
02:06He also urged drivers to keep their apps updated, collect screenshots if things go wrong, and
02:12encouraged all parking providers to offer at least two payment options, warning that no
02:17one should be forced to use a mobile app when parking if they don't want to.
02:22Councils in England reported a £1.2 billion surplus from parking charges in 2024-25.
