00:00Heather and Phil follow in the Santa Campagna's dreaded footsteps.
00:04They want something from the Libyan.
00:07But will they lose their minds, or worse, their brains?
00:12What? What the f***?
00:15What the f***?
00:27All right, favorite zombie movie, go.
00:29Uh, Shaun of the Dead.
00:31Anagram of Meat is Teen.
00:32Amazing movie.
00:33Evil Dead.
00:34Who wouldn't want a chainsaw's hand?
00:36Also great, I'm gonna go with the one that started it all.
00:40George Romero's 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead.
00:44Ah, they're coming to get you, Barbara.
00:46Absolutely.
00:47And in fact, Night of the Living Dead was based on real stories.
00:51George Romero's family comes from the Galicia region of Spain,
00:55where there have actually been sightings of zombies for centuries.
00:58Wait, there are zombies walking around Spain?
01:00More lurching around.
01:02But yes, this is something that people have talked about for a really long time.
01:05It all stems from this really eerie legend known as Santa Campagna,
01:10or the March of the Undead.
01:12Tucked away in the northwest corner of Spain is Galicia.
01:20The region is famous for its ruggedly beautiful coastline
01:23and its unique culture and ancient beliefs.
01:26In some remote villages, you can still find practicing magas, or witches.
01:34And all around Galicia, prehistoric structures sanctify their Celtic pagan roots.
01:40But one ancient belief casts a shadow over all others.
01:47Stay clear of forests in the dead of night,
01:50or else you might cross paths with the Santa Campagna,
01:53a horrifying procession of zombies.
01:56The earliest written description of the Santa Campagna appears in the 13th century Spanish poem,
02:04The Miracle of Theophilus.
02:06It mentions the Hues de Antigua, or ancient host,
02:10a group of demonic figures carrying candles.
02:15Then, in 1885, Galician author Jesus Rodriguez Lopez
02:19documents the most commonly described version of the legend.
02:24He describes a march of tormented zombies,
02:29wrapped in hooded robes, each holding a candle.
02:33The undead are led by a living person in a trance.
02:37This mortal grows sicker each night until they die and join the march forever.
02:42Unless, that is, they can find a hapless traveler to take their place.
02:47The story goes that if you're unlucky enough to witness this late-night death march,
02:51you may be next to join it.
02:53Today, reports of this army of walking dead are still common,
02:58often around ancient roadways and ruins deep in the Galician wilderness.
03:03Witnesses describe mysterious lights,
03:06the smell of burning candle wax,
03:09floating robed figures,
03:10and most of all, feeling overcome with bone-shaking terror.
03:14Recently, reports have actually been increasing,
03:19leaving many in the region to worry that this zombie army is on the move once again,
03:24eager for more souls to join its unholy undead.
03:28All right, so, what do you think?
03:35Well, look, I've done a lot of unique investigations in my time,
03:38but I've never searched for a zombie army.
03:40It's definitely out there, but I gotta say, it's gonna be fun to investigate.
03:44All right, Heather Amaro, ladies and gentlemen,
03:45I'm the first person to ever describe the soul-sucking army of the undead as fun.
03:51And what about you, Phil?
03:52My mind first goes to what could people be misidentifying as a group of zombies
03:56or whatever in the middle of the night.
03:58For example, I know the region is famed for its wild horses.
04:01Wait a second, you think people are mistaking horses for zombies?
04:03You're talking about zombie horses right now, Phil?
04:05Listen, I just think there's probably a lot of things
04:09running around the Galifian wilderness at night,
04:11and people's minds under pressure may make a leap to identify it as a zombie.
04:17All right, so, zombies coming from your brains instead of for your brains.
04:21Yeah.
04:22Well, your mission is to see if there's any life to this undead legend,
04:26so get to Galifia and see if you yourselves can encounter the dreaded Santa Campagna.
04:32Hail to the king, baby.
04:34Say what now?
04:34That's an Evil Dead reference.
04:36Yeah.
04:36Well, who died and made you f***ing the zombies, Phil Torres?
04:39Wow.
04:39I think she needs a snack.
04:41Yeah.
04:41I do.
04:42Good luck, and don't get your brains eaten.
04:45Deal.
04:47It's a seven-hour flight from New York to Madrid.
04:50From there, it's a six-hour drive to A CoruƱa in northern Galifia,
04:54a coastal region of Spain with its own unique identity,
04:58right down to its pronunciation.
05:01So, you know, when we're in the U.S.,
05:03you can get away with saying Galifia.
05:05But when you're here, you've got to say it right.
05:08You've got to say Galifia.
05:10Galifia.
05:12Galifia.
05:13Galifia.
05:14Heather?
05:14Yeah?
05:16Galifia.
05:16Galifia.
05:17Galifia.
05:17Are you, are you just messing with, Galifia?
05:21I am just messing with you, Galifia.
05:24There you go.
05:24I was getting nervous.
05:28How are you going to survive the zombie apocalypse?
05:30I'm going to blend in.
05:31I'm going to pull from the Shaun of the Dead playbook
05:33and just copy the zombie.
05:35You're going to act like a zombie?
05:36Yeah.
05:37Let's see it.
05:38Phil, I'm driving.
05:39I can't do it now.
05:40At least to the voice.
05:41Sorry, what was that?
05:47You saying brains?
05:48I am saying brains.
05:49Would you eat brains just to blend in?
05:51Absolutely not.
05:53That's where I draw the line.
05:54I'm going to tell Josh you are not committing
05:55to this investigation.
05:56You're going to run to Dad and tell on me?
05:59Just say you're open to it.
06:01Unbelievable.
06:02So this is our CoruƱa.
06:04It's beautiful.
06:05We make our way to a local taverna
06:12where we meet our Santa CompaƱa content.
06:15Hola, Manel.
06:16Hey.
06:17How are you?
06:17So good to meet you.
06:19Manel Lorero is a Spanish journalist and author
06:21who has written so many books on zombie folklore
06:24that he's been called the Spanish Stephen King.
06:28Santa CompaƱa is a deeply wrought tradition
06:32in the Galician culture,
06:33in the Northwest of Spain culture.
06:35It's a medley,
06:37a mix in pagan traditions
06:39and Christian traditions.
06:41The Santa CompaƱa is a very old tradition.
06:45It's a procession of the dead.
06:49And this is connected with the zombie tradition
06:52because they have the same goal.
06:56They want something from the living ones.
06:58Is it brains?
06:59Do they try to eat your brains?
07:00No brains, but your soul.
07:02And they have to walk night after night in the woods.
07:11So this is like purgatory.
07:13It's worse than a purgatory
07:14because a purgatory is out of this world.
07:18They are trapped in this world
07:20and led by a living person.
07:24He's a cursed person
07:26who has to leave the Santa CompaƱa night after night
07:31until finally he dies.
07:33You or you or me can be cursed
07:37if we have the bad luck
07:39of finding the Santa CompaƱa walking in the woods.
07:43So if someone runs into the Santa CompaƱa,
07:46what do they do afterwards?
07:49If you find the Santa CompaƱa,
07:52personally, I would recommend you to go to Omega.
07:55Omega is a witch.
07:57Witch?
07:57It's a woman
07:59and they have the abilities
08:00to lift the course
08:03and they can heal you.
08:07There are lots of people
08:08that actually claims
08:09that they found the Santa CompaƱa,
08:10but they don't want to talk about it.
08:12Maybe because they feel
08:14that they are not going to be believed.
08:17But I tracked down a woman
08:18that wants to talk with you.
08:20Oh, that's great.
08:21And she said
08:22she's actually seen the Santa CompaƱa.
08:25Wow.
08:26I think I know our next stop.
08:28Agreed.
08:29We say goodbye to A CoruƱa
08:31and head to the Galician countryside
08:33to meet with Manel's contact.
08:35She's one of the few people
08:36that's not only seen the Santa CompaƱa,
08:39but she's also willing to talk about it.
08:43Hola.
08:43Hola.
08:44Nerea?
08:44Encantada.
08:45Encantada.
08:46Encantada.
08:47Nerea Mosquera
08:48has lived in this farmhouse all her life.
08:50Her family has owned the property
08:52for over 100 years.
08:54So, we hear you may have had a run-in
08:56with the Santa CompaƱa.
08:58Si.
08:59Yo vi la Santa CompaƱa un dƭa...
09:01Yes.
09:02I encountered the Santa CompaƱa last year.
09:06My father and I enjoy going out
09:08for walks in the woods with our dogs.
09:11One night, we were walking down the trail
09:13and we both hear a faint murmuring sound.
09:16We couldn't make out any worse, though,
09:19but it was really weird
09:20because nobody is ever up here.
09:23Suddenly, the air became extremely cold
09:26and there was a strange smell of burning wax.
09:30When we turned around,
09:32we saw a group of beings
09:33and they all appeared to be carrying a light.
09:37The figures were moving very quickly.
09:39The whole thing lasted about a minute
09:41before we eventually all ran back here to the house.
09:44So, can you describe what these beings look like?
09:49I know, they passed very quickly.
09:51They were moving very fast,
09:52so it was hard to get much detail.
09:56Are you running?
09:56Are you running?
09:57No, not running.
09:58Not running, but faster than a walk.
10:02It was like they were floating
10:04and it appeared as if they were wearing robes,
10:07but they were definitely holding a light of some sort.
10:11Maybe a candle because of the wax smell.
10:14So, where exactly did you see this?
10:17How far away from it were you?
10:22Like a hundred meters away from us,
10:25but it was deep in the forest on this old trail.
10:30My father and I were completely terrified.
10:33So, there is no doubt in your mind
10:36that you encounter the Santa CompaƱa?
10:39Absolutely.
10:40Absolutely.
10:41This was 100% the Santa CompaƱa.
10:44What do you know about these woods?
10:46What's the history of this area?
10:49It's a very old forest.
10:51If you go deep enough,
10:53you will find old ruins and monasteries
10:55because the forest is home to the Holy Santiago Trail,
10:59which was a pilgrimage trail
11:01that many people would use back in the medieval times.
11:05So, an ancient religious trail
11:07runs through this forest?
11:09Si.
11:10Let's check it out.
11:11Thank you so much, Nerea.
11:12Gracias.
11:13Encantada.
11:15Nerea shares the coordinates of her mysterious sighting
11:17and we make our way to the Holy Santiago Trailhead
11:20at the edge of a forest
11:21roughly a quarter mile from her farm.
11:24Bring on the march of the zombies.
11:47Okay.
11:47And we are right as your coordinates.
11:54So, right around here.
11:55Okay.
11:56Well, this looks like a great spot to set up a trap.
11:59I mean, we've got a straight line of sight.
12:00Yeah, it also seems like a great spot to be trapped.
12:03Look at the height of these walls
12:05on either side of the trail.
12:06There's no getting out of here variously.
12:08That's kind of the point.
12:09What?
12:10We're bait.
12:11Great.
12:12So, that's your plan?
12:13Just us be bait?
12:14Yeah, I mean, there has to be a living person
12:16to actually attract the Santa Campania, right?
12:19That's how the story goes.
12:20All right.
12:21Set up a tripwire.
12:22Okay.
12:23Let's do it.
12:29As we set up to try and intercept
12:31the march of the Santa Campania,
12:34we roll out 200 feet of our EMF tripwire
12:36in opposite directions along the trail
12:39where Nerea had her supposed encounter.
12:42At each end, we also place a motion detector.
12:44All right.
12:45Now, I just got to set this other one over here.
12:48To investigate her claim of a sudden cold spike,
12:50I'll be monitoring the temperature
12:52while I also use a parabolic mic
12:54to listen for any source of the murmuring she reported.
13:00All right.
13:01Trap is set.
13:02Time to ambush the Santa Campania.
13:08Okay, I'm registering our starting temperature.
13:10We're at 63.5.
13:12Okay, 63.5.
13:13It's really quiet.
13:23Nothing is moving in this forest.
13:26So far, I can hear some dogs in the distance.
13:29A little bit of rustling here and there,
13:31but nothing that sounds like murmuring.
13:32Wait, wait, wait.
13:42Wait, wait, shh, shh, shh.
13:45Do you hear that?
13:46Oh!
13:48Holy s***!
13:50Everything in front of us.
13:51Like something came towards us.
13:59Their temperature's already dropped to 60.7.
14:03Did you see that?
14:05No, no, no.
14:05Like something just moved down there.
14:08Right across, at the end of the line.
14:10You're joking.
14:11Look like something moved.
14:12It's still blinking.
14:14It's still blinking.
14:25F***.
14:27Your sensor.
14:29Where's the detector going off?
14:30Something's down there.
14:32Let's go.
14:32Okay.
14:39Okay.
14:40Somewhere right over here.
14:43I'm not seeing anything.
14:44Oh, my God.
14:45Look.
14:46What?
14:47There's a light.
14:48Right there.
14:48Right there.
14:53It's right over here.
14:55The light was right here.
14:56You seen it?
15:01Seen anything?
15:02I see nothing.
15:04Wait, shh, shh, shh, shh.
15:07Sounds like running water.
15:08It does.
15:10What the hell?
15:11What's that?
15:12I don't think it was eye shot,
15:13because it lit up before my flashlight hit it.
15:16Bill, you know what they say.
15:18Santa Campania has lights.
15:20Yeah, lights.
15:21Plural.
15:22Not just one.
15:23Maybe it was someone messing with us.
15:24Either way, we're on another ancient trail,
15:26and the light led us in this direction.
15:28I think we gotta keep pushing on.
15:29Okay.
15:29Let's keep moving.
15:30All right.
15:37Well, we found the river,
15:39but it looks like we lost the trail.
15:43No, we didn't.
15:44Look at this.
15:45Holy, old ruins.
15:48Just like Norea said it would be on here.
15:49Yes.
15:53Open doorway.
15:55Wait, wait.
15:56You smell that?
15:58Yeah.
15:58It smells like smoke.
16:01It does smell like smoke.
16:03Am I crazy?
16:05It smells waxy.
16:07That's what Norea said.
16:10Or maybe there's someone out here.
16:12Maybe they have a campfire going.
16:13Follow our noses?
16:14Yeah.
16:15Okay.
16:15Wow.
16:16Look how old this is.
16:24Oh, my God.
16:25Look.
16:28Okay.
16:29Wow.
16:30That tower up there.
16:31This must be one of the monasteries Norea was talking about.
16:34Yeah.
16:35Hello?
16:36Hello?
16:36It's still small, that smoke.
16:40Yeah.
16:41This is so incredible.
16:46Hola.
16:46There's someone here.
16:51Whoa.
16:52Look at this.
16:57Oh, wow.
16:58I think this is a chapel.
17:00Beautiful.
17:05Something led us to this chapel.
17:09I think I want to investigate in here.
17:11What do you want to do?
17:12I want to try to communicate.
17:13Okay.
17:14While you do that, I just want to scan the perimeter, because I want to try to figure out what that
17:18smoke smell is coming from.
17:20If there's a campfire, it will show up on the flare.
17:22Okay.
17:23Split up, but stay on walkie.
17:25Okay.
17:25You got it?
17:25All right.
17:41Is there anyone here with me?
17:50Absolutely nothing's showing up on the flare.
18:05Just a bunch of trees.
18:08Were you the light that led us here?
18:15Why did you lead us to this chapel?
18:20Fate.
18:20Fate.
18:23Are you the Santa Campana?
18:28Healer.
18:29Healer?
18:37What is that?
18:43I'm hearing something.
18:48How is that?
18:50Do you hear that?
18:54Yeah.
18:56Hello?
19:05Phil, do you copy?
19:07Yeah, I copy.
19:08What's going on?
19:09I'm hearing some strange noises in the chapel.
19:14Okay.
19:15Should I come to you?
19:17Definitely.
19:19Okay.
19:20All right.
19:20What's up?
19:22Hey.
19:23Hey.
19:25Look.
19:25Are you hearing something?
19:26Yeah.
19:27It was super weird.
19:30Okay.
19:30Wait, wait, wait.
19:33It stopped.
19:35What was it?
19:36It sounded like layers of voices?
19:37It sounded like layers of voices, maybe.
19:40Did you find anything?
19:42Nothing.
19:42Nothing.
19:43As far as I could see, we are alone up here.
19:47But if you did hear that in here, camera should have it.
19:51Your mic should have picked it up, so hopefully we have a recording of it.
19:53Okay.
19:54Okay.
19:54Yeah.
19:55And you want to know what's interesting?
19:57Huh?
19:57I heard that right after I got the word healer on the ovulus.
20:01Oh.
20:02Yeah.
20:03So I'm thinking we need to find a witch.
20:06Uh, Mega, right?
20:08Yes.
20:09Okay.
20:10Well, I think the sun's about to rise.
20:12We got a long hike back.
20:13We got to get moving.
20:14Okay.
20:27The next day, Phil and I split up to learn more about the Santa Campania.
20:32I've contacted a local Mega, Julia de Borja.
20:35I'm hoping her knowledge of Galitia's ancient culture can help explain what we experienced
20:41last night.
20:43Hola.
20:44Hola.
20:45Really appreciate you meeting with me.
20:48So, what is a Mega?
20:50And how do you become one?
20:52Naci Mega.
20:54I was born a Mega.
20:56You don't become one.
20:58I was born with a gift.
20:59The power to see spirits and over time, I have been able to understand and use that power.
21:05So, last night, we had some really strange experiences.
21:09We saw a light in the woods and we followed it.
21:13We smelled smoke.
21:15And then, all of this seemed to lead us to an abandoned monastery.
21:20And not only that, I heard something that sounded like murmuring.
21:25The hell is that?
21:26Do you think that could have been the Santa Campania?
21:32Si.
21:32La Santa Campania.
21:33Yes.
21:34The Santa Campania are almost always seen in the forest or near holy sites.
21:40There's believed to be greater activity around monasteries because those sites typically hosted
21:45rituals, invocations, and burials.
21:47Originally, the monasteries around here were used by monks, but some of the abandoned sites
21:57over time have been taken over by people looking to do dark rituals or black magic.
22:04And the Catholic Church built many of these monasteries on top of ancient pagan sites,
22:11where Celtics and Romans ruled thousands of years ago.
22:14So, all that energy is still trapped there.
22:20It's in the walls.
22:21It's in the ground.
22:23It's in the woods.
22:26While Heather is off visiting with the Mega, I want to learn more about what the historical
22:31record says about the Santa Campania.
22:33I've traveled to the city of Pontevedra to meet with one of Galicia's leading anthropologists,
22:38Rafael Quintia.
22:39So, how are the Santa Campania described in the earliest recorded encounters?
22:47If you want to truly understand the Santa Campania, think of it as a cake with many layers.
22:55And these layers are all the different cultures that have lived in Galicia down through the centuries.
23:01And in their early folklore, there are different representations of the Santa Campania.
23:06There's a spiritual representation that says it's a collection of moving lights, and each
23:10life represents a human soul.
23:13But there's also a more physical representation that suggests it manifests itself as a parade
23:18of human-like figures.
23:19So, what is the association between Santa Campania and zombies?
23:27Well, Santa Campania is made up of spirits of the dead and a procession with an alternate
23:32destination.
23:33Zombies and folklore are just rotting corpses, walking aimlessly.
23:37So, these are marching souls.
23:41Where are they going?
23:41There's an ancient belief that the Santa Campania souls are marching west towards the islands.
23:48They go to rest where the sun dies.
23:51That's supposed to be their paradise.
23:53So, these souls are going to the islands.
23:56Any island in particular stand out to you as being historically relevant?
24:01There's an island just off the coast called Tambo Island.
24:04It's uninhabited today, but we have evidence that many different cultures have lived on
24:09this island, dating back to very ancient times.
24:12Bruins of a chapel still stand today, so the island holds a deep mysticism amongst the
24:17locals.
24:17According to Galician folklore, Tambo Island is one of the places that the Santa Campania
24:22goes to try and rest in peace.
24:24So, if we want to understand the Santa Campania, do you think we should continue to focus on
24:31these ancient religious sites?
24:33Yes.
24:35It's important to know that not all the souls in the Santa Campania procession are bad or
24:40evil.
24:41Some of the souls are good, and all they are really seeking is a final resting place that
24:47brings them peace.
24:49So, it's just like how we are in real life.
24:51There's some good people, there's some bad people, and it just depends on how we are.
24:54And who you're going to interact with in the Santa Campania?
24:57Exactly.
25:00I know you're going to go out and look for them again, but I beg you to be careful.
25:06The Santa Campania are real.
25:11With Julia's warning ringing in my ears, I meet up with Phil, who tells me what he learned
25:16about Tambo Island, the alleged final destination of the Santa Campania.
25:21We agree there's no time to lose, so we charter a boat and set sail to the island across the
25:26Ria de Pontevedra.
25:27Okay, here we go.
25:29Tambo Island.
25:35Moving around, just a little bit.
25:37Just a little.
25:38Dolphins.
25:39Dolphins.
25:39AquĆ.
25:40There.
25:41Oh, wow!
25:42It's a very mysterious place with all the lights in there at night.
25:55First time I was ever on the island, I went to the chapel that's on the far side.
26:04I found a chicken that was cut open, blood and feathers everywhere.
26:09There was a cross, flowers placed on the ground.
26:12It was a little disturbing.
26:14That sounds like the aftermath of a dark ritual.
26:18Why here?
26:18Well, the mega mentioned that these abandoned monasteries and chapels were taken back over
26:24and people were doing dark rituals there.
26:27Do you think what you experienced could be connected to the Santa Campania?
26:33I'm telling you, this is our spot.
26:36That is amazing.
26:40It looks completely abandoned.
26:42Here we go.
26:43Ready?
26:43Yeah.
26:53Well?
26:54Okay.
26:55You take right, I'll take left.
26:57Meet you at the chapel.
26:58All right.
26:58Phil and I might have better luck encountering the Santa Campania if we investigate different
27:03sides of the island.
27:04We'll separate, each going opposite directions along the island's main circular trail.
27:10We'll aim to meet at the ancient chapel site, said to be on the north side of the island.
27:17You got your radio?
27:18Got your wongy?
27:19Yeah!
27:20Okay.
27:20Okay.
27:20Okay.
27:28Rain's picking up.
27:34The salamander's everywhere.
27:38Try not to step on them.
27:43So check that out.
27:45Down the distance, you could see some of the city lights.
27:49I imagine also the occasional boat light could come by, so when people talk about seeing floating
27:54lights around here, I can imagine that if you are up in the thicker part of the woods here
28:00and you look out and you see just a glimpse of a city light or a glimpse of a boat light,
28:05from that angle, it could look like a floating light.
28:08So, for me, I think that could be one of the explanations of people claiming to see Santa
28:14Campania on this island.
28:16I've got my K2 meter.
28:22It is an EMF meter.
28:24Since I got all those hits on my tripwire the other night...
28:26Whoa!
28:28Holy s***!
28:29I want to see if I can get any activity on this as well.
28:32Whoa!
28:32There we go.
28:47There we go.
28:48Right there.
28:50Got up to about five.
28:55That was about 20.
28:57There are no utilities, no electrical wires on this island.
29:01It is abandoned, which means that could be evidence of a paranormal presence around us.
29:17Oh, shoot.
29:21That...
29:23was loud.
29:26Wow.
29:27Something just made a noise up here.
29:31We are on the windy side of the island, so...
29:38there's always a chance that a branch broke up ahead and just fell.
29:47Temple Island is, uh, definitely keeping me on edge.
29:51This is Heather.
29:54I'm recording on an island where a lot of people say the Santa Campania comes for their
30:01final destination.
30:03I've been getting these hits on the K2 meter.
30:07Is there anyone with me?
30:09Yes, okay.
30:14Um, right as I asked that question, the K2 meter went off.
30:18I take that as an affirmative.
30:25Are you trapped?
30:31Are you a part of the Santa Campania?
30:33Cool.
30:36See that?
30:38Okay.
30:39I'm gonna take that as yes.
30:43Do you lead souls to this island as their final destination?
30:53Yes.
30:54Yes.
30:54Okay.
30:55Yes.
30:55Yes.
30:56Big yes.
30:56Big yes.
30:57Okay.
30:57Okay.
31:00She almost gotta be somewhere close.
31:01We're on the north side of the island.
31:11Light!
31:11There's a light!
31:12Right there!
31:18It was right here.
31:20I'm telling you.
31:21Did you get it?
31:21You got it on camera?
31:22Did you see it?
31:23Yeah, I saw it.
31:23Okay.
31:25What was that?
31:27Light!
31:28There's a light!
31:28Right there!
31:30Look at this.
31:30This is all uphill.
31:31All uphill.
31:33Meaning, that's city lights.
31:35This way?
31:38City lights, downhill that way.
31:40But that's where the horizon is.
31:42So that couldn't have been a city light?
31:43Couldn't have been a boat?
31:45What was that?
31:50Okay.
31:51Another hit.
31:54Holy s***!
31:55There it is.
31:56Right as the activity is going crazy.
31:58That is the chapel, and the K2 meter is going off the charts.
32:02Look at that activity.
32:05Holy s***!
32:07Phil, do you copy?
32:09Yeah, Heather.
32:09Go ahead.
32:10I found the chapel, and my K2 meter has been going crazy.
32:13Found the chapel.
32:14Meet you there.
32:15Copy that.
32:16Phil, can you hear me?
32:20Yeah.
32:22Follow my light!
32:24Okay, go in.
32:25Check it out.
32:26Hey.
32:26Oh, my gosh.
32:29Did you find anything?
32:31I saw light.
32:32What?
32:33Listen, I'm not saying it was a zombie holding a candle, marching through here, but it was
32:38weird.
32:38This has been going off.
32:40Like, do you see that?
32:43If you're convinced this is our spot, well, okay.
32:46We're here.
32:47First things first.
32:48Let's just get our eyes on the space.
32:50Okay.
32:50Whoa, whoa, whoa, what?
32:54Look at that.
32:55Right as we're about to step in, it's going off.
32:59Try taking a step back.
33:00Let's test this out.
33:02But now it's dead.
33:04Let's go forward again.
33:07Whee!
33:09You looked around, there's no power lines.
33:10There's no utilities.
33:11I'm part of the old Navy bases.
33:12No.
33:13There's nothing that shouldn't be giving us hits like this.
33:16That is a sign of paranormal presence.
33:18Okay.
33:19You ready to take a step in?
33:20Ready?
33:25The air feels really thick in here.
33:29Feels oppressive in here.
33:33Whoa, whoa, Heather.
33:35Holy s***.
33:40George Romero, the horror movie genius behind Night of the Living Dead, took serious creative
33:46inspiration from his Galician heritage.
33:48The stories of the Santa Campana that he was raised on shaped his iconic vision of zombies
33:55as relentless, soulless wanderers, transforming hapless victims into one of them.
34:01But the influence didn't stop there.
34:04Short of the funds he needed for the filming of Night of the Living Dead, Romero turned to
34:08his elderly Spanish aunts, Puri and Nina, to help bankroll the movie's $100,000 budget.
34:15Despite living humble lives in northern Spain, the two aunts happily forked over the cash that
34:21Romero needed.
34:21Night of the Living Dead would go on to become a genre-defining cult classic and incredibly
34:30profitable, making $30 million, or around 250 times its budget.
34:36Thanks, aunties.
34:37Look at this!
34:44Are you kidding me?
34:48Burned candles, bones, feathers, and a circle of stones.
34:53Even I can tell you, this looks like some kind of ritual, black magic.
34:57People are still coming here.
34:59Look at this.
34:59Whoa, whoa, whoa.
35:01It's like a cross.
35:02Yeah.
35:03This is an active spot.
35:04I've got something I want to try.
35:06Okay.
35:07Okay.
35:08As Phil documents the alarming scene, I pull out trigger objects for a call and response
35:13session.
35:14I have two candles, one real and one EMF candle, which acts like a rim pod.
35:21Okay.
35:24I let Phil decide where to place the wax candle.
35:29I think, why not right in the middle?
35:31I don't know where the ritual was.
35:33Okay.
35:37Just gave me chills.
35:39I don't know if it's because I don't like it being there, or if you're messing with something
35:41we don't want to mess with.
35:43Okay.
35:45What are you doing?
35:46I am drawing a protective circle, just like the mega told me to do.
35:53So you just threw the stick?
35:55Yeah.
35:56I don't get to make my own protective circle around myself?
36:00What?
36:00Oh, what the f**k?
36:05That just fell over.
36:07Are you kidding me?
36:08I think you should make a protective circle around yourself, because it fell over literally
36:12right when you said, I'm not going to make a protective circle around myself.
36:15What the f**k?
36:16That is solid ground.
36:22I'm telling you, we're not alone.
36:24That is insane.
36:26That is insane.
36:26Give me that stick.
36:28All right.
36:29Recording.
36:31This is Heather and Phil.
36:32We are in an abandoned chapel.
36:34On an abandoned island.
36:36On an abandoned island.
36:39Is there anyone with us?
36:46What?
36:47Are you the sound I heard in the chapel?
36:49Are you the light that Phil saw?
37:01I'll stay quiet.
37:02Okay.
37:03Did you lead me here?
37:07Are you part of the Santa Campania?
37:08That's like several yeses in a row.
37:24Is that normal?
37:25No.
37:25It's like there's multiple spirits right here with us, communicating.
37:31It's like they're all in line, coming here to say yes, yes, yes, yes, one after another.
37:39Yes.
37:40It makes sense.
37:42Think about it.
37:43The Santa Campania is not one spirit.
37:45It's this cacophony of energy, of souls passing through here over and over.
37:51And that's being reflected in our equipment.
37:54And look, we started this investigation thinking that the Santa Campania was evil, that it trapped
38:03living people until they died.
38:06But we now know that the Santa Campania actually brings peace in a lot of ways.
38:14These people are guided to the afterlife by the Santa Campania.
38:18This is a story that ends in peace.
38:22Are you still with us?
38:24The team did not find a horde of hungry zombies wandering Galifia's woods.
38:34But their night on Tambo Island convinced Heather that they'd communed with something even more
38:40powerful.
38:41Are you a part of the Santa Campania?
38:43A spiritual version of the Santa Campania.
38:46Hello?
38:47See that?
38:49And even more extraordinary, she believes the Santa Campania were marching with them from
38:54the very start.
38:55Re-examining footage from their first night's investigation in the forest behind Nerea's farm, she spotted
39:02something that, in the moment, they both missed.
39:05Oh!
39:07Holy s***!
39:08The tripwire activates behind them before it goes off in front of them.
39:14Could that mean a spectral army was marching through them, down the ancient Pilgrim's Road?
39:21Look.
39:21Where's the light?
39:23Right there.
39:24Right there.
39:25Footage of the light Phil saw in the woods was also analyzed.
39:29The light was not a clear match to any electrical source.
39:32It appears closest in color temperature to a candle.
39:36But there was one thing that the strange light did match.
39:40Right there!
39:41It was the same as the glimmer Phil saw on Tambo Island, despite these two locations being
39:4775 miles apart.
39:49Phil still contends this could all be someone playing tricks on them.
39:54Heather believes that sailing to a remote island, hiding all night in the forest just
39:58to briefly light a candle, would be one hell of a trick.
40:02One thing, at least, could be easily explained away.
40:06How is that?
40:10Audio analysis of the murmurs Heather heard in the monastery of San Soan de Cavallero
40:16was nothing more than an acoustic echo.
40:21What?
40:22What the f***?
40:26Were Heather and Phil really in lockstep with the Santa Campania as they undertook their undead
40:31march ever westward?
