00:00Ireland, Spike Island.
00:03What the hell?
00:05This brutal prison saw centuries of torture and torment.
00:09The Punishing Block was there to break your will.
00:12Today, its abandoned cells reportedly hold powerful paranormal activity.
00:18From the ghost of a sadistic guard,
00:22to prisoners who tried to make a literal deal with the devil.
00:27They said it was a dark shadowy figure, threatening even demonic.
00:32We'll discover that true horror,
00:34do you know what you contacted in this room?
00:37Has broken free from the confines of Spike Island.
00:42That's a face.
00:57Come on, look at that view. Beautiful.
01:01Stunning, it is so green.
01:04All right, Gates, you got me to Ireland.
01:06You got me on my first helicopter ride.
01:07High five, by the way.
01:08Where are we going?
01:10Come on, what would the fun be if I just told you?
01:12We're in Ireland. Where do you want to go?
01:14Uh, Guinness Brewery.
01:15Heather, we don't have time for tourist trips.
01:17We are here to investigate.
01:19I miss Phil.
01:20Oh, dagger to my heart.
01:22Phil is off with his brand new baby,
01:24so you're stuck with me this week.
01:25You see that island in the harbor?
01:27Yeah.
01:27That is where we're going.
01:29Oh, Lord.
01:30Is that a fort?
01:32It was built as a fort.
01:33Later, it was converted into a notorious prison.
01:38Thousands of people died there.
01:41This is Spike Island,
01:43the most haunted place in Ireland.
01:45A mile off the coast of Cork
01:53sits Ireland's own Alcatraz, Spike Island.
01:56Only half a mile wide,
01:59it served as a remote island prison for centuries,
02:04infamous for its horrible conditions
02:05and human suffering.
02:08In the 1650s,
02:10during England's violent conquest of Ireland,
02:13British forces used Spike Island
02:15to hold thousands of prisoners
02:17under cruel conditions.
02:19The campaign is barbarically successful,
02:22dominating Ireland
02:23while killing off 20% of its population.
02:28In 1779,
02:30the British begin constructing
02:32Fort Westmoreland on the island
02:34to protect their supply lines
02:35from American and French attacks
02:37during the Revolutionary War.
02:40But it's a different kind of attack
02:42that turns Spike into a true island of death,
02:45the Great Famine.
02:47From 1845 to 1852,
02:51blight ravages Ireland,
02:53decimating crops
02:54and killing an estimated 1 million people,
02:58forcing the starving to steal food to survive.
03:01The English have little sympathy.
03:05Men, women, and even children
03:06are sent straight to jail
03:08for crimes as minor
03:09as snatching a loaf of bread.
03:12To accommodate the influx of inmates,
03:14Spike Island's fortress
03:16is transformed into a prison.
03:18At its peak,
03:21over 2,300 prisoners
03:23are held on the tiny island,
03:26making it, at the time,
03:27the largest prison
03:28in the British Empire.
03:31Every day,
03:32inmates undergo back-breaking labor
03:34while receiving little food
03:35and pitiful medical care.
03:38Brutal beatings
03:39and solitary confinement
03:40await anyone who can't keep up.
03:43Diseases like tuberculosis
03:45and cholera
03:46spread rapidly
03:47in the overcrowded cells.
03:49An estimated 1,200 people
03:51die on Spike Island
03:53during the famine era.
03:55They are still buried on the island
03:56in unmarked graves,
03:58unable to escape the prison,
04:00even in death.
04:03During World War II,
04:04Irish soldiers stationed
04:05in Spike's fortress
04:07report seeing the apparition
04:08of a British soldier
04:10with horrifying holes
04:11where his eyes should be.
04:13They call him
04:14the Gaunt Gunner.
04:17joining the list
04:18of the many frightening apparitions
04:19said to haunt the island.
04:22In 1985,
04:24Ireland's Alcatraz
04:25serves as a prison once again
04:27before finally closing for good
04:29in 2004.
04:30But its horrors
04:31will not stay locked up.
04:34Today, visitors and staff
04:35regularly report
04:36deeply disturbing paranormal activity.
04:39Full-body apparitions
04:41in the decaying cells,
04:43disembodied voices
04:44in the fortress's
04:45ancient tunnels,
04:46and terrifying screams
04:48in the island's
04:49abandoned village.
04:51Recently,
04:52supernatural reports
04:53have been escalating,
04:55leading many to wonder
04:56if the buried horrors
04:57of Spike Island
04:58are finally breaking free.
05:00Can you believe that place?
05:07No.
05:08That place is incredibly
05:09intimidating from the air.
05:11Absolutely.
05:12I mean, just look at it.
05:13Abandoned out in this harbor,
05:15and you can see
05:15these old cell blocks,
05:17the old fort infrastructure.
05:20Now the place,
05:20it is historically preserved.
05:22They bring tours out here.
05:23I can't imagine
05:25what it would have been like
05:26to be imprisoned there.
05:27Well, you're about to find out.
05:28We are going to have this place
05:30all to ourselves.
05:31We are both about to be locked up
05:33in Ireland's Alcatraz.
05:36You outdid yourself
05:37this time, Gates.
05:38I figured Phil wasn't here.
05:39We should have some fun.
05:41I'm kidding.
05:42I'm kidding, Phil.
05:43Congrats on the baby.
05:46All right, Captain,
05:46take us in.
05:47Coming in to land.
05:56Captain, thank you for the ride.
05:58No problem.
06:02Now that we're back
06:03on terra firma,
06:04we're meeting with tour guides
06:06Lorraine O'Maheni
06:07and Noel McCarthy.
06:09Hey, how are you?
06:10Josh.
06:10I'm Josh.
06:11Nice to meet you.
06:12Hiya, Lorraine.
06:14Experts in Spike Island's
06:15dark past
06:16and the paranormal activity
06:18that's reported today.
06:21Welcome to Spike Island.
06:24I'm kind of gobsmacked.
06:25This is such an amazing
06:26looking place.
06:27Yeah, it certainly is
06:28full of history.
06:29And so over the years
06:30it's been a prison,
06:31a fort.
06:32A prison, a fort.
06:33A prison, a fort.
06:34Back and forth.
06:34Yeah, back and forth.
06:35So during its main use
06:38as a prison,
06:39what was life like out here?
06:41Horrendous.
06:41This would be a place
06:43of labour and work.
06:44In the early part
06:45of the famine,
06:46the convicts were used
06:47as a labour supply
06:48to finish off
06:49the construction
06:49of a prison.
06:50Wow.
06:51The working day
06:52was about 14 hours
06:54a day in the summer.
06:55If you didn't do your work,
06:57you were made
06:57an example of
06:58they would have been flogged.
07:00We know that there
07:00was isolation cells.
07:03There was so much
07:04brutality and cruelty here.
07:05So with all of this
07:08history here,
07:09it's maybe no surprise
07:11that there are also
07:12paranormal reports.
07:13Yeah, you can't have
07:14that much suffering
07:15in one place
07:17without having a residue
07:18left over.
07:19We are inundated
07:20with reports here.
07:22It is overwhelming.
07:23Wow.
07:24How long have these
07:24paranormal reports
07:25been going on for?
07:26Well, the earliest
07:27written account we have
07:28dates from the 1940s
07:29when the Irish Army
07:30was in occupation
07:31of the fort.
07:32In a century
07:32one night on duty
07:33over by the main gate,
07:34saw a figure
07:35crossing the square
07:36in military garb.
07:38But the closer
07:39the figure came to him,
07:40the more he realized
07:40there was something
07:41quite unusual.
07:42The figure wore a uniform
07:43from a different era
07:44and his eyes are hollow,
07:47almost socket-like.
07:49He became so unnerved
07:50at what he saw
07:51that he fired his rifle
07:52at the figure.
07:53He actually shot
07:54at a ghost.
07:55That's what the account says.
07:56Wow.
07:57This may be the first account
07:58I've ever heard
07:59of a soldier
08:00shooting at a ghost.
08:02He was quite unnerved
08:03at the experience.
08:04And has he been
08:05seen since?
08:06Yes, indeed.
08:08He's become known
08:08as the Gaunt Gunner
08:09of Spike Island.
08:10He's probably one
08:10of the more famous
08:11figures of the island.
08:14And what about
08:15the buildings themselves?
08:16Where are the hot spots?
08:18I can start with
08:18the building behind me
08:20here, A Block.
08:21A Block was built
08:221810 to house
08:23300 soldiers.
08:25But by the time
08:26the famine came
08:27there was up to
08:27700 convicts in here.
08:29Wow.
08:30We have a lot of reports
08:31with faces in windows,
08:33shadows, figures walking
08:35up and down the back
08:36of it.
08:38And we have a very
08:39notorious scourge
08:40who worked in this
08:40building, William Reddy.
08:43Reddy was a cruel man.
08:45He ruled with an iron fist.
08:48And when he was
08:48patrolling one night
08:49he had a run-in
08:50with these two young
08:51inmates,
08:51horsing around boys
08:53who were sentenced
08:54during the famine
08:54for petty crimes.
08:56Reddy reprimanded them.
08:58They got two and a half
09:00years added to
09:00their sentence.
09:02Just for horsing around?
09:03Just for messing around.
09:04William Reddy
09:05was a brutal man.
09:06Any kind of happiness
09:07wasn't tolerated.
09:09A few nights later
09:10Reddy was passing again.
09:12These two lads
09:12picked up this metal bar
09:14they had hidden
09:14earlier that day.
09:16Clobbered Reddy
09:16over the head with it.
09:18He got such a blow
09:19to the head
09:19they killed him.
09:20We do think
09:21the figure that we see
09:22at the back of this
09:24building could be Reddy.
09:28And I can't help
09:29but notice the building
09:30looks kind of gutted
09:31and burned out.
09:32Well, in 1985
09:33a riot broke out
09:35and the instigator
09:36set fire to the cells
09:37inside an A block.
09:40It burnt out
09:41and has remained
09:41derelict ever since.
09:42Wow.
09:44It's dangerous
09:44so nobody goes in there
09:46the building is off
09:46limits to the public.
09:48So it's kind of
09:48frozen in time there.
09:49It sure is.
09:50Another really hot spot
09:52here would be
09:53the punishment block
09:53which is the light
09:55coloured stone one here.
09:57The punishment block.
09:57That's the place
09:58you didn't want to go?
09:59No.
09:59The punishment block
10:00was there to break
10:01your will.
10:02It wasn't so much
10:03physical punishment
10:04but torture of the mind.
10:06A convict would
10:06spend 23 and a half
10:07hours a day
10:08inside the dark cells.
10:10No window
10:10existing in pitch black.
10:12Shackles to the wall
10:13would have worn hoods.
10:15They would have
10:15worn hoods as well?
10:16Yes.
10:17Wow.
10:18That's crazy.
10:19How long were people
10:20kept in those cells?
10:22Depending on the
10:23severity of their
10:24punishment
10:25days, weeks, months
10:26and in some cases
10:27years.
10:28Yes.
10:29Wow.
10:30And what are the
10:30paranormal reports
10:31from the punishment block?
10:33People hear footsteps
10:34upstairs.
10:35They see shadows.
10:36They see figures.
10:39I actually have
10:40a photograph
10:41that somebody sent in.
10:42This was submitted
10:43by, what,
10:44a visitor here?
10:44Yes.
10:46Oh, on the stairs.
10:47Oh, legs.
10:49Look at that.
10:49You can see two legs
10:50and it looks like the
10:52outline of an individual.
10:54That's a good picture.
10:55It's scary.
10:56So this is a very active
10:58area.
10:58Very, very active,
10:59yeah.
11:00Sounds like we've got
11:01our work cut out for us.
11:02Yes.
11:03And the two of you,
11:04are you staying here?
11:05We're going to catch
11:05the last ferry back.
11:06There are no more boats
11:07until the morning.
11:08So you're here on your own.
11:10I'm going to hand you these.
11:12These are the keys to the fort.
11:13These are literally the keys?
11:15Yes, indeed.
11:15Okay.
11:17All going well.
11:17We'll see you in the morning.
11:18What do you mean,
11:19if all goes well?
11:20We'll see you in the morning.
11:21Hopefully.
11:22Hopefully.
11:22Have fun.
11:23Okay.
11:24Thank you, guys.
11:25All right, look at this.
11:26We've got the literal keys
11:27to Spike Island here.
11:29I mean, I have no idea
11:30what these open.
11:31We'll figure it out.
11:32Okay.
11:32Should we do it?
11:32Heck, yeah.
11:33Come on.
11:36As the last ferry
11:37departs Spike Island
11:38with Lorraine and Noel on board,
11:41Heather and I
11:41and our crew
11:42are Spike's only residents
11:44until sunrise.
11:46We get to work
11:46setting up our base camp
11:48before fanning out
11:49with infrared cameras
11:50to cover the prison's
11:52reported hotspots.
11:53A block,
11:54where the spirit
11:55of murdered guard
11:56William Reddy
11:56is said to keep watch
11:58through burned-out windows.
12:00That looks pretty good.
12:01The punishment block,
12:02where prisoners
12:02were confined
12:03in total darkness
12:04for weeks
12:05and strange smells
12:06and shadow figures
12:08have recently been reported.
12:10And the courtyard.
12:11Ah!
12:11Oh, it's Heather.
12:13I thought you were
12:13the gaunt gunner for a second.
12:14Came out of nowhere.
12:15Where Spike's
12:17most infamous spirit,
12:18the gaunt gunner,
12:19was first sighted.
12:20How we looking?
12:23We're looking great.
12:24I think we're in good shape.
12:25So what's the plan?
12:26Well, I don't know.
12:28What would Phil do
12:28if he were here?
12:30Probably fix his hair.
12:31Or talk about insects.
12:34Okay.
12:36Oh, I'm kidding.
12:37I want to go to A Block.
12:38That's where I want to go.
12:39People say they see faces
12:40in the windows,
12:41they see shadows.
12:42Plus the place is a ruin.
12:44I love exploring a ruin.
12:45Nobody's been in there
12:46since 85.
12:47Like, the staff
12:47doesn't even go in there.
12:48So, I want to check it out.
12:50Well, I want to go
12:51to the punishment block.
12:52It's a no-brainer.
12:53You're a glutton for punishment.
12:54No, I'm a glutton
12:54for paranormal activity.
12:56Okay.
12:56Should we divide and conquer?
12:57I think so.
12:58Stay in touch by walkie-talkie.
13:00See what we see.
13:00All right.
13:01Good luck out there.
13:01Thanks.
13:01Thanks.
13:02So, here we go.
13:10The infamous A Block.
13:13I've got to say,
13:13this place takes on
13:14a totally different character
13:16now that the sun is down.
13:19Let's see if I can see anything
13:20on that thermal imager.
13:24Okay.
13:24So,
13:25if people are seeing something
13:27in these windows,
13:28could it be that some animal
13:30is living in this place, right?
13:31I mean, this is abandoned.
13:32Nobody's set foot in this place
13:34in 40 years.
13:36Or,
13:37if it is something otherworldly,
13:39maybe it creates heat.
13:40Who knows?
13:42Right now,
13:43it looks very cold and dark.
13:55Okay.
13:56that is the stairwell
14:02where the photo
14:03of that shadow figure
14:04was taken.
14:07Take out my ASL list
14:08and see if I need anything.
14:10Okay.
14:11Let's see
14:11if I need anything
14:12on these stairs.
14:18Is there anyone there?
14:19We saw that picture.
14:21It was taken
14:22right here
14:23at these stairs.
14:25Can you show yourself,
14:26Timmy?
14:34So far,
14:35I got nothing.
14:36A whole lot of cold,
14:38dark building.
14:43Oh,
14:44oh, oh, oh,
14:44right there.
14:45Look.
14:47There is a heat signature
14:48inside this window.
14:51What the hell?
14:52What the hell is that?
15:00There is a clear heat signature
15:02in this window.
15:04It's gone.
15:06It was there
15:07for a split second
15:09and it's gone.
15:10We gotta get inside this place,
15:11see what's going on in there.
15:12Come on.
15:14How do you get
15:15into this place?
15:15Come on.
15:15Come on.
15:18Okay.
15:23This might take a second.
15:27Oh, boy.
15:30You might want to
15:31cut to Heather.
15:36My name's Heather.
15:38I'm trying to communicate.
15:41You can make a sound.
15:44You can use this device.
15:45I've got a hit.
15:57Were you
15:57imprisoned in here?
15:59Wave your arm
16:00if you were.
16:01There he is.
16:02There he is.
16:02Waving his arm.
16:03Waving both arms.
16:04Okay.
16:05All right.
16:06It looks like
16:07you're kicking
16:08the walls,
16:10pushing at the walls,
16:12just trying to get out.
16:13Holy s***.
16:18He's gone.
16:19This cell is so small.
16:21That's like a,
16:23what,
16:23two by two foot cell?
16:25I would call it
16:26a closet.
16:28Can you imagine
16:28being stuck in here
16:29for 23 hours of the day?
16:32I mean,
16:32I would go
16:33absolutely crazy.
16:34Did y'all hear that?
16:50Is there anyone there?
17:00What was that?
17:01Did y'all hear that?
17:02I don't know.
17:04Hello?
17:09Is anyone here with me?
17:17Is that you?
17:22Are you the one
17:22that was just on my camera?
17:26I feel like you're
17:26leaving me somewhere.
17:27I don't know.
17:27I don't know.
17:34Come on.
17:38Bingo.
17:45Here we go.
17:47Wow,
17:48this is totally
17:49crumbling back here.
17:52Let's get the thermal
17:53back up.
17:55This is the first time
17:56anybody's explored
17:56back here
17:57in 40 years.
17:58Whatever I saw
18:01in that window
18:02was directly across
18:04from this side
18:05of the building,
18:05so let's see
18:06what's going on
18:07in here.
18:14Holy
18:14look at this.
18:18You can totally
18:18see why this
18:19is closed off.
18:20This place
18:21is literally
18:21falling in on itself.
18:22look at the
18:25destruction in here.
18:27Let's go further.
18:34What was that?
18:40Hello?
18:44Hear that?
18:44It's like
18:47a clicking noise.
18:53Is somebody here?
18:56What the hell
18:57is that?
19:06You can see
19:07up into that
19:08second floor.
19:11Yeah.
19:15Okay.
19:16I think we might have
19:17found what was
19:17in the window.
19:19Good Lord.
19:20Those are pigeons
19:21that are roosting
19:23in the ruins
19:23of this building.
19:24Oh my word.
19:26That's probably
19:27what was in that
19:27window, right?
19:28A bird that saw
19:29my light
19:29and moved off.
19:32It certainly
19:32scared the hell
19:33out of me.
19:39This
19:39definitely
19:41feels different.
19:43This feels
19:43a lot
19:44more
19:44oppressive.
19:53We got one.
19:55It looks like
19:56he's curled
19:56in the fetal position.
20:00Were you
20:01tortured here?
20:04Is that
20:04why
20:05you were
20:05in a fetal position?
20:09Oh,
20:10it's gone.
20:11holy
20:21the
20:22did you hear
20:25that?
20:25Deds,
20:34do you copy?
20:35Go for
20:36Josh.
20:37Did you hear that?
20:38Hear what?
20:39It sounded like this
20:40wailing of agony.
20:42Sorry,
20:42it sounded like
20:43a person wailing?
20:45Yes.
20:45Like they were
20:46in pain or something.
20:46I did not hear that
20:48at all,
20:48but I'm really
20:49far from your
20:49location.
20:50Look,
20:50I've been hearing
20:51things all over
20:51this building.
20:52My SLS has been
20:53going off.
20:53She's got to
20:53get over here.
20:54Okay.
20:55We're on our way
20:55over you.
20:56Stand by.
20:56Copy that.
20:57Let's head over
20:58to Erica.
21:02Hey.
21:03Hey.
21:04What's going on?
21:05Are you okay?
21:06Yeah.
21:07I got so much
21:08activity on my SLS.
21:09It looks like
21:10one spirit was
21:11pushing and kicking
21:12against the walls.
21:12It looks like
21:13another one was
21:14curled up in the
21:14fetal position
21:15inside the cell.
21:16This is like
21:17the exact opposite
21:18of my experience.
21:19I got birds over there.
21:21So it sounds like
21:22we should focus
21:22our efforts here.
21:23Oh, yeah.
21:24It seems like
21:25whatever is here
21:26is still being punished.
21:27I want to try
21:27to put myself
21:28in the same headspace
21:29that these prisoners
21:30were in when they
21:30were locked up
21:31in these cells.
21:32You mean you want
21:32to actually, what,
21:33sit in one of these cells?
21:34Yeah.
21:34I want to experience
21:35that isolation
21:36and see if that
21:36triggers something.
21:37Okay.
21:45After capturing
21:48multiple figures
21:49on her SLS,
21:50Heather thinks
21:50getting into
21:51the headspace
21:52of an inmate
21:52could help her
21:53communicate
21:54with whatever
21:55may still be
21:56imprisoned
21:56in the punishment block.
21:58Using REM pods
21:59and an audio recorder,
22:01she'll undertake
22:01a call and response
22:03session,
22:03while I monitor her
22:05on the infrared cameras
22:06back at base camp.
22:08Okay, you ready for this?
22:10Yeah.
22:12Where'd you get these from?
22:13I got them from the museum.
22:15They are replicas,
22:16but they are accurate
22:17to the period,
22:17so this is what
22:18prisoners here
22:19would have worn.
22:20Okay.
22:21All right,
22:22so you are locked in.
22:23I have the key.
22:24Now the hood.
22:25Are you sure
22:26you really want to do this?
22:27This is the way
22:28the prisoners were held,
22:29and I want to get
22:30as close as I possibly
22:31can to their headspace.
22:33Okay.
22:34You ready?
22:40Can you see
22:41anything at all?
22:42No.
22:43Okay.
22:43We've got an open walkie
22:45so I can hear your audio.
22:46I'm going to go back
22:47to the command center
22:47and monitor you
22:48from there, okay?
22:49Okay.
22:49All right, good luck.
22:51Here we go.
22:52Okay.
23:04Okay, we got
23:05good picture from here.
23:06Can you hear me
23:07through the audio?
23:08Yeah, I can hear you
23:08loud and clear.
23:10Okay, great.
23:11I got here as well.
23:12I'm turning off
23:12my mic for a minute
23:13and good luck.
23:19This is Heather.
23:21I'm in the dark cell.
23:25Is there anyone here with me?
23:29Feel free to use
23:30these REM pods.
23:31Feel free to make a noise.
23:32was that tap you?
23:45I just heard a tap on one side.
23:56Are you a prisoner
24:02that was kept
24:03in the punishment block?
24:08What'd you hear?
24:10I heard the tap closer
24:12right outside of the cell.
24:15Maybe try to move
24:18one of those REM pods
24:19if you can feel it
24:20closer to the doorway?
24:21Okay.
24:25Okay.
24:28Are you standing
24:29in the doorway right now?
24:34Whoa!
24:37Okay.
24:39Were you a prisoner?
24:44Were you a guard?
24:45Is that why you're
24:48in the doorway?
24:54Okay.
24:55Maybe William Reddy,
24:56the notorious guard?
24:59Are you William Reddy?
25:09Still going.
25:10Still going.
25:10Still going.
25:15Do you see anything
25:28in this room?
25:30Nothing.
25:31I can see that you're
25:31reacting to something,
25:32but...
25:33Cameras are totally clear.
25:34There's nothing in there.
25:35What's happening?
25:36I just heard a footstep
25:37come into this cell.
25:45What the f**k?
26:02What's up?
26:02Are you okay?
26:03I think I'm done.
26:05I think I went out.
26:06Okay.
26:06Hold on.
26:06I'll be right there.
26:07I'll be right there.
26:13Heather?
26:14Yeah?
26:15Hold on.
26:21Hey.
26:22Are you okay?
26:23What happened?
26:25Let me turn this off.
26:26Yeah, yeah.
26:26What the hell
26:27is going on?
26:28It felt like something
26:29was in the doorway,
26:30and then I heard
26:31this noise.
26:32This noise,
26:32I was like...
26:33In the room,
26:37you heard that?
26:38Do you think
26:39it was a person?
26:40Yeah.
26:41You know,
26:41the rim pods
26:42were going off
26:43when I was asking
26:44if it was a guard,
26:44if it was William Reddy,
26:45and then that noise.
26:51Look,
26:52the audio recorder
26:53is still running,
26:53so hopefully,
26:55if that noise
26:55was in this room,
26:56we got it.
26:57Yeah.
26:58Are you okay?
26:58I'm a little shook up.
27:00It is very uncomfortable
27:01being in this room
27:02by yourself.
27:03Let's get you out of these.
27:04Okay, come on.
27:06Let's get out of here.
27:07Let's get some fresh air.
27:08Yeah.
27:10Handcuffs.
27:14We keep watch
27:15on our cameras
27:16in the solitary
27:17confinement cell
27:18and throughout
27:19Spike's other hot spots,
27:20but no new activity
27:22surfaces.
27:25The next morning,
27:26we get a welcome visitor
27:27from the mainland,
27:28someone who knew
27:29Spike Island well
27:30when it was still
27:31an active prison.
27:32You must be Liam.
27:33Hi, Heather.
27:34Great to meet you.
27:35Nice to meet you.
27:36Damn gosh.
27:37Liam Warner worked
27:38as a prison officer
27:39on Spike Island
27:40for 18 years,
27:41right up until
27:42its official closure
27:43in 2004.
27:44I hear you spent
27:46the night here
27:47last night.
27:48Yeah.
27:48How did it go, guys?
27:51A lot of activity.
27:53It was crazy.
27:53It was a crazy night.
27:55I'm not surprised.
27:56Back in the day,
27:57it was always rumored
27:58amongst prisoners
27:59that Spike Island
28:00was haunted.
28:01Even when you were
28:02here working?
28:02Oh, absolutely, yeah.
28:03I mean, for centuries,
28:05it's been known
28:05as some place
28:06that's haunted.
28:07I used to patrol
28:09this moat down here
28:10that goes all the way
28:11around the fort
28:12and on occasion,
28:14very unusual
28:15and strange things
28:16have happened to me
28:17and to others
28:18who have patrolled
28:19that moat.
28:20Wow.
28:22Some nights,
28:23you'd get this sense
28:24of dread,
28:24a sense of being watched.
28:27No explanation for it.
28:29You just couldn't wait
28:30for the morning to come
28:31so you could go back in.
28:32And did you ever see
28:33anything down in the moat?
28:36Just feel it.
28:38Now, others have said
28:39they've seen shadowy figures.
28:41Others have said
28:42that they've heard
28:43chains rattling.
28:44Chains?
28:45Chains rattling, yeah.
28:47In fact,
28:47there was a very famous
28:49prisoner back here
28:49in the 1860s,
28:51Henry Swears.
28:54On two occasions,
28:55he actually escaped
28:56from the prison,
28:57went through the moat
28:58and made it to the shore.
29:00Wait a minute,
29:01this guy escaped
29:02Spike Island twice?
29:03Twice.
29:04And was what?
29:04He was caught?
29:05He was recaptured
29:06and after he was recaptured
29:08the second time,
29:09he was made to wear
29:10heavy chains
29:11for the rest of his sentence.
29:12Wow.
29:13The entire time?
29:14The entire time
29:15so that he couldn't escape.
29:17And so this sound
29:19of chains down in the moat
29:20may be old Henry Swears.
29:22Could be Henry Swears,
29:24absolutely.
29:26Along with the moat,
29:27where else did you work
29:28on the island?
29:28I also worked in
29:30what's now known
29:31over here
29:31as the abandoned cells.
29:34We had prisoners
29:35kept over there
29:35in four-man cells.
29:37So you had four prisoners
29:38in each cell.
29:39And there are
29:40paranormal accounts
29:41associated with
29:42the abandoned cells?
29:43Very much so.
29:45What became popular
29:47back in the early 80s
29:49was the use
29:51of spirit boards.
29:52By the prisoners?
29:54By the prisoners, yes.
29:55Where were they getting
29:55spirit boards from?
29:58They'd make them themselves.
29:59They used to have
30:00these timber lockers.
30:01They'd take off the lid
30:02and then they'd draw
30:04a spirit board
30:05to concede them tomorrow
30:06and they'd just
30:06turn it back over.
30:08I've never heard
30:09of that kind of contraband
30:10in a prison before.
30:11Spirit board contraband.
30:13Spirit board contraband, yeah.
30:14The prisoners were trying
30:15to communicate with ghosts.
30:17Yes, they were.
30:19One night in particular,
30:20four prisoners
30:22started bagging the door,
30:24trying to get out
30:25of the cell
30:26because of what
30:27they had conjured up.
30:29So they were so frightened
30:31by what they saw there
30:32that they demanded
30:33to be let out.
30:34I have never seen people
30:36look so scared
30:37as these guys looked
30:38that night.
30:39There was blind panic in them
30:40as they banged the door,
30:42pleading to be left out.
30:45Did they say
30:46what they had conjured up
30:47in the cell?
30:48They said it was
30:49a dark shadowy figure,
30:51threatening, even demonic.
30:54Where did this happen?
30:56I distinctly remember
30:57it was cell B9.
30:59It was the first cell
31:00on the right-hand side.
31:01And my understanding
31:03is these abandoned cells
31:04are still considered
31:05a real paranormal hot spy.
31:07Very much so.
31:10Some have seen things there.
31:12Some have even taken
31:13very interesting photographs.
31:14You have them.
31:15I do have them.
31:16Would you like to see them?
31:17Yes, very much.
31:18That's one figure there now.
31:20You can clearly see.
31:22Oh, yeah.
31:22Oh, yes.
31:23It looks like a head
31:25right there in a body.
31:26That's tall.
31:28And this is taken
31:29inside a cell?
31:30Inside the cell, yeah.
31:31Okay.
31:32There's an even better one here.
31:33Ooh.
31:34Ooh.
31:34See that figure?
31:36That's freaking huge.
31:38That looks like
31:39Nosferatu.
31:40It really does.
31:41You can see an arm
31:43and a body.
31:43That is terrifying.
31:45That is incredibly shocking.
31:48So,
31:48all the time
31:49you spent out here,
31:50did you leave
31:51believing this place
31:53was haunted yourself?
31:54Oh, 100%, yeah.
31:55Now, I would have
31:56never thought too much
31:57about ghosts growing up,
31:59but coming over here,
32:00there's a lot of misery
32:01associated with this island,
32:03a lot of negative energy.
32:05I have no doubt
32:06Spike Island
32:07is one of the most haunted places,
32:09not just in Ireland,
32:10but in the world.
32:12Liam, thank you so much
32:14for the time.
32:14I really appreciate it.
32:15You're very welcome, lads.
32:16It was a pleasure.
32:17Best of luck tonight.
32:18Yeah.
32:19Thanks so much, Liam.
32:20As the sun sets
32:21over Spike Island,
32:22Heather and I
32:23head to the abandoned cells
32:25where prisoners believe
32:26they communicated
32:27with a demonic presence.
32:30Okay.
32:31Into the abandoned cells.
32:33Pretty foreboding.
32:35Yeah.
32:36What could go wrong?
32:40Ooh.
32:43Wow, this place is
32:44abandoned, all right.
32:46Look at it.
32:47Oh, my word.
32:49It just goes on
32:50in both directions.
32:52Wow.
32:52Let's try to find
32:53that really notorious cell,
32:55B9.
32:55Yeah.
32:56All right.
32:56Let's check it out.
32:58Oh, wow.
33:00These aren't numbered.
33:04Okay, these must be
33:05the old cells.
33:11This is definitely creepy.
33:13Take a couple pictures.
33:29How creepy is this place?
33:32Hey, Gates.
33:33Yeah?
33:34Come here.
33:34Check this out.
33:37You know that one picture
33:38that Liam showed us
33:39that kind of looked like a person?
33:40Yeah, with like a head
33:41at the top?
33:42Yeah.
33:42Well, when you were looking
33:43at the cell across the way,
33:44your reflection was
33:45in the plexiglass.
33:46Oh, really?
33:47I snapped a picture of it.
33:48Check it out.
33:50Oh, look at that.
33:52It totally reflects
33:53off of this plexi.
33:55So maybe that's what
33:56somebody snapped
33:56in their image?
33:57Yeah, that may be able
33:58to explain it.
33:59Totally, right?
34:00If you were taking a picture
34:01against this highly
34:02reflective plexi
34:03and somebody was standing
34:05out in the hall
34:06or across the hall,
34:07it would look like a ghost.
34:09So that's me.
34:10Yeah.
34:10And then this big shadow
34:12is you.
34:12Yeah.
34:14Who's this?
34:15What do you mean?
34:17The hell is this?
34:19That's not me or you.
34:21That's a face.
34:29Spike Island has seen
34:30more than its fair share
34:32of sorrow.
34:33And sadly,
34:33its closest harbor,
34:35named Cove,
34:36has seen it as well.
34:37Playing a pivotal role
34:38in two of history's
34:39most horrifying
34:40maritime disasters.
34:43Cove's waters
34:43were the Titanic's
34:45last port of call.
34:46On April 11, 1912,
34:48the vessel boarded
34:49its final 123 passengers
34:52at Cove.
34:53Four days later,
34:54those passengers
34:55would drown
34:55alongside the 1,500 others
34:58who perished
34:58when the Titanic
34:59hit an iceberg.
35:01Just three years later,
35:02more tragedy
35:03would return
35:04to Cove's waters.
35:05On May 7, 1915,
35:08a German U-boat
35:09sunk the Lusitania,
35:11killing almost 1,200 souls.
35:13Many of the bodies
35:14were washed back
35:15onto the Irish shore,
35:16laid to rest
35:17in mass graves.
35:18Today, memorials
35:19still stand
35:20in Cove Harbor,
35:21marking the enduring
35:22tragedies
35:23of the two vessels
35:24that never returned.
35:33That is a face.
35:34That is a face.
35:36Look at it.
35:36You can see
35:37the bridge of the nose,
35:38the mouth.
35:39You can almost see,
35:40like, hair.
35:40The eyes.
35:41Black sockets
35:43for eyes.
35:44You know what it looks like?
35:45Like the Gone Gunner.
35:47Right.
35:49There's nothing
35:50in the window itself.
35:51There's no smears,
35:53no, no...
35:53No, I mean,
35:54it's a dirty,
35:54old piece of plexiglass,
35:56but there's nothing
35:56in there that,
35:57if you just take
35:58a picture of it,
35:59it doesn't reflect
36:00back as a face.
36:01Let's try to find
36:05that really notorious cell,
36:06B9.
36:07Yeah, yeah.
36:08That's where
36:08these prisoners said
36:09they thought something
36:10demonic showed up.
36:12Let's go.
36:12Okay.
36:19Nine.
36:20B9.
36:21Right there.
36:21Right there.
36:22This place is so
36:34off-the-charts
36:36scary.
36:39I got a surprise for you.
36:40What?
36:43No.
36:45Come on!
36:46I mean,
36:46this is exactly
36:47what we shouldn't be doing.
36:48You're always talking
36:48about trigger objects.
36:50This is the trigger object
36:52of all trigger objects
36:53for this room.
36:54This is incredibly dangerous.
36:55You shouldn't be doing this.
36:57And who knows
36:57what the hell
36:58they brought up in here.
36:59You think this works?
37:00Yeah.
37:01This is not a game.
37:03It literally is.
37:04They sell it at Target.
37:05Just because they do
37:06doesn't mean that they should.
37:08We know there were prisoners
37:08in this room
37:09using homemade spirit boards
37:11and that they contacted something.
37:13Isn't that why we're here?
37:15Trying to figure out
37:16what's in this room?
37:17I don't disagree.
37:18We just need to be extremely careful
37:20while we're using this.
37:21We'll be careful.
37:22Okay.
37:23Let's do it.
37:23Come on.
37:27You ready?
37:28I'm ready.
37:29Okay.
37:29The most important detail is
37:31when we are done,
37:33we have to close
37:34the session down.
37:35We are not going to do
37:36what these prisoners
37:37potentially may have done
37:38and left something open.
37:39We move the planchette
37:40to goodbye.
37:41We say goodbye.
37:42And then we remove
37:43the planchette
37:43from the board.
37:44Okay.
37:45So, it's one hand
37:46or two hands?
37:47Two.
37:48Two hands.
37:48One finger?
37:49Yep.
37:49Ready?
37:49Okay.
37:51Okay.
37:54If there's anyone here with us,
37:57can you move the planchette?
38:03It's moving.
38:04It's moving.
38:05It's moving.
38:05It's moving.
38:08G?
38:08Are you trying
38:14to communicate with us?
38:20Oh, my God.
38:22Yes.
38:24You're not pushing us?
38:26No, I'm not pushing it.
38:26I'm not pushing it either.
38:28Were you the face
38:30in the window?
38:31No.
38:31No.
38:38Were you a prisoner
38:43in this room?
38:50Four?
38:51Four prisoners.
38:53Four prisoners in here.
38:56When you were a prisoner here,
38:58did you use a spirit board
39:00like this?
39:03And did that spirit board
39:05work?
39:06Yes.
39:14Yes.
39:16Okay.
39:17Do you know
39:18what you contacted
39:19in this room?
39:26H.
39:26H.
39:29E.
39:30L.
39:36Hell?
39:37Hell as in
39:38they thought
39:38there was a demonic
39:39presence in this room?
39:40Yeah.
39:42Is there anything
39:43that you want
39:45to tell us?
39:50R.
39:51R.
39:54U.
39:58N.
39:59Run.
40:00Run.
40:00Run?
40:02What the
40:03was that?
40:06Next time
40:07on Expedition X.
40:09You ready for this?
40:10Yeah.
40:12Over here.
40:13We discover
40:14the shocking
40:15hidden history
40:16of Spike Island.
40:18Their
40:18trolts were caught
40:19ear to ear.
40:20Both dead
40:21and the room
40:21locked from the inside.
40:22Inside, yeah.
40:25Exploring
40:25the former home
40:26of a twisted surgeon
40:28known as
40:29Dr. Death.
40:31Some help.
40:32What do you need
40:33help with?
40:36And venturing
40:37into secret tunnels
40:38below the fortress walls.
40:40It's getting colder.
40:42to be here.
40:42Well,
40:42let's go to the
40:43side.
40:43All right.
40:44Let's go to the
40:45对.
