00:00exact spot it was a place of suffering today it's said to be haunted by those who died in
00:08its labyrinth of tunnels it's going off like crazy lights now heather and phil will wage
00:17their own war oh my god as they dig deep it's like it opens up up here rather into the horrors
00:25of the rock are you the executioner oh my god i've got chills
00:31all right who's ready to rock we start a tribute band josh gates in the temple of boom oh i love
00:49this this is great but no i'm talking about the rock of gibraltar that's the place that's in spain
00:55but it's british that's the one very confusing i know it is a british territory surrounded by spain
01:01it is known as the gateway to the mediterranean and it has been a center of trade for millennia
01:08but recently there has been a surge in something else paranormal activity well there were a bunch
01:14of wars that were fought over it right and doesn't spain still want it back from england today yes and
01:18yes look there's arguably no smaller strip of land that has been as fiercely fought over as gibraltar
01:24and those thousand plus years of violence have reportedly led to unexplainable activity not just
01:31around but inside the rock
01:33towering 1400 feet above sea level the rock of gibraltar has cast a shadow over the mouth of
01:44the mediterranean sea since mankind first set sail this looming limestone mountain sits on a peninsula
01:52on the southern coast of spain it overlooks the strait of gibraltar the eight mile wide stretch of water
01:59separating europe from africa it's said whoever holds the rock controls the gateway to the mediterranean
02:08the first documented battle for gibraltar comes in 1309 when the spanish army defeats the moorish forces
02:15that had held the rock for the preceding 600 years the vicious battle claims hundreds of lives
02:25over the next 400 years gibraltar changes hands many times and much more blood is spilt ultimately
02:32a staggering 100 000 people will die at the rock in a succession of sieges
02:38and those who don't die trying to claim the rock often end up with an even worse fate
02:46they're jailed in the moorish castle on the northwest side of gibraltar
02:51a brutal prison specializing in torture and executions
02:55in 1713 gibraltar is conquered for the last time when britain captures it from spain to defend it from
03:05future invaders the british begin digging tunnels into the rock itself transforming it from a mountain
03:12into a fortress these defenses are heavily tested during the great siege of 1779
03:19for nearly four years the british army repels wave after wave of spanish and french troops
03:29over half a million cannonballs are fired at the rock but the british hold firm
03:38a thousand soldiers and civilians suffer within the mountains labyrinth during the brutal war
03:44from the end of that siege to the present day gibraltar has had a notorious reputation for being
03:51extremely haunted with accounts of locals seeing shadow figures dating from the 18th century
04:00today the city of gibraltar has 30 000 residents many have reported seeing strange lights
04:06and hearing impossible voices emanating from deep inside the rock
04:10they also speak of a pair of persistent apparitions one appears to be a legless man
04:20the other looks like a robed figure referred to as the mad monk
04:26the motto of gibraltar's military is no enemy shall expel us but does that apply to both the living
04:33and the dead so what do you think i think rock on nice thanks look the activity of gibraltar is
04:47fascinating not only because of all of the deaths but the rock itself is made from limestone and some
04:53people think that limestone can record traumatic events it's called the stone tape theory okay so heather
04:59thinks the rock is a giant vhs cassette what do you think you know i do know one thing about gibraltar
05:05and i'm beginning to wonder if that one thing could explain everything monkeys monkeys monkeys
05:11monkeys gibraltar is home to europe's only wild population of monkeys specifically the barbary macaque
05:17and they're apparently everywhere in the town on the mountains and think about what those witnesses
05:24describe strange sounds dark shapes i'm beginning to wonder if maybe it could all just be monkeys yes
05:31all right well let's find out your mission is to get to gibraltar and investigate these disturbing
05:36reports in and around the site you ready let's rock on you guys gotta pick one
05:46the journey to gibraltar starts with a six-hour flight to london before a three-hour hop down to the
05:52small british territory on the southern spanish coast ready to go up oh you better believe it
06:02a scenic cable car ride then takes heather and phil to the top of the rock hello gibraltar
06:13is that what i think it is africa yes right across the water oh we are really high up right now
06:21their degree to set the top of the rock are gibraltar's most famous locals the barbary macaques
06:27oh my goodness i see my first monkey native to the mountains of north africa these monkeys were
06:33likely brought here during the moorish period more than 800 years ago and they never left
06:42oh he's about to go through your backpack he's going through your back
06:44yeah he's trying to know how to do zippers yeah yeah no he's opening up your little flap right
06:48there tell him not to what do you want me to do
06:53parkour that was amazing all right let's go meet our guy yeah let's do it
06:57hey hello hello phil great to meet you hey lovely meeting you look at this view
07:09kevin circum has lived in gibraltar all his life for years he's been coming here to personally map out
07:15the rock's unsettling limestone labyrinth one tunnel at a time kevin tell us about these tunnels what is
07:22going on inside this rock from the very top to the sea level it's all been carved hollow basically
07:28there's about 35 miles of tunnel that we know of and they all are connected one to another
07:38they actually made the city inside the rock oh wow you've got a generator a room you've got hospitals
07:46and they've actually installed an aircraft inside
07:51not all of it is accessible to the public because some of the areas are still used for military purposes
07:58even today even today how many soldiers could fit inside this rock it originally catered for 16 000
08:05during world war ii 16 000 soldiers wow i assume there's a lot of death there was thousands of
08:12soldiers and civilians killed during these sieges yes so we understand that you've had some incredible
08:20paranormal experiences inside these tunnels absolutely a group of friends we went into
08:28the generator room we heard the sound and we saw this figure go by
08:38it looked like a monk wearing a cloak so there's a local ghost story about this mad monk and you think
08:46you saw it i'm quite sure i saw it to be honest it's very dense black figure hooded walking slowly across
08:55have you ever seen anything else there's another energy which is also talked about
09:03and it's the legless apparition it's like an energy of a man with no legs and it sort of hovers around
09:11near the hospital wow so do you think he died in the hospital or who do we think this legless apparition
09:17is we don't know but it could be a miner was killed when the tunnel caved in and he died suddenly
09:25oh wow so nobody really knows for sure but he's been seen by several people
09:33i have to ask about monkeys i've seen them around the things you're describing could it just be that
09:40there's some monkeys in the tunnel that's what people are experiencing that's a good question but
09:45monkeys keep out of all tunnels i think they've had their own share of experiences so even the monkeys
09:52are sensitive to this paranormal energy that's inside these tunnels absolutely as soon as you enter
09:58you know you're not alone you'll find for yourself
10:02we leave kevin cliffside grab our gear and make our way into the underworld of the rock of gibraltar
10:13and to the toes we go our first stop is the generator room which hasn't powered anything
10:19since world war ii but according to kevin may be buzzing with another kind of energy
10:32the amount of effort we must have taken to carve out all these tunnels generator room should be down that way
10:45this is a huge room
10:49wow it just keeps going
10:53wow
10:59shh listen listen
11:03hello
11:09again
11:10sounds like voices
11:22like murmuring
11:26hello
11:29hello
11:31this is where kevin saw that mad monk
11:33okay
11:34okay well
11:37it could be a mad monkey so i'm gonna get out the flare make sure there's nothing else running around back
11:42here
11:51what is going on in here
11:55you see anything no nothing so far
11:57are you the mad monk
12:10what the was that was that you what did you hear that no it was like a like a
12:16nothing is coming up on the flare
12:25i want to set up something to keep an eye out for any visual anomalies in this room
12:29okay
12:30since witnesses reported seeing the apparition of the mad monk here
12:34i decide to set up a video camera and a scrolling laser plane
12:37which can help reveal potential shadow figures
12:41okay recording
12:42i also place a digital recorder to capture the strange sounds we've been hearing
12:47one two three lights
12:52nice
12:53awesome
12:56looks good
12:58so if anything walks across this plane we'll have a recording of it and we'll see it
13:04okay
13:05i think at this point we should probably split up because there are literally miles and miles of tunnel
13:10to investigate stay on walkie let's just plan to meet back in one hour yeah
13:17while heather heads off in search of the former hospital and its supposed legless apparition
13:23i'm on the hunt for any natural causes that could explain the paranormal claims inside the rock
13:28like sudden drafts strange echoes or maybe even monkeys
13:43wow
13:46big wind gusts coming through here
13:50oh
13:50oh
13:52i think it opens up to the outside
14:01okay
14:07whoa look at that wow the city right outside
14:13oh my god and there's a nest must be for one of the goals
14:16the nature reclaiming this spot a little bit something like this was built for this this giant
14:25searchlight that would light up the sky light up the sea to look for enemies approaching the rock
14:32and it's causing a heck of a lot of wind which could explain a lot
14:36i think this is it
14:44this is the operating room
14:49and this would have been the pathway everyone would have been walking right here
14:52it sounded like someone in agony
15:06i imagine
15:09operating table would have been somewhere right about here
15:14i take that wailing as a sign that this is a good spot to set up my gear for a con response session
15:19i lay down an emf trip wire
15:22you can touch it you can get close to it it'll change different colors and take out my xless camera
15:35my name is heather i'm here to understand what's going on i've got an audio recorder you can say
15:41anything you want on there can you make any of these objects go off
15:49is there anyone here with me
15:55all right the wind velocity here this is the highest i've detected throughout the tunnels
16:02this i gotta measure
16:06this is an ananometer it's essentially a mobile weather station and it's detecting everything from
16:13temperature to humidity to wind speed which is something that's really interesting to me
16:17and it's bluetooth connected to my phone so i could start the recording i think right now we're
16:22measuring at 15 miles per hour that is definitely the fastest wind i've detected so this is going to
16:31take measurements all night to someone who's walking through here maybe a little bit afraid they may
16:36interpret what they observe as a ghost story but when you look at the data it may show that in fact
16:42that apparition they saw was nothing more than a cloud coming in from the side of the cliff entering
16:48the tunnels and then flying through at 15 miles per hour past their flashlight could look like an
16:53apparition but really it's just water vapor and wind now we gotta find that cave inside
17:03all right let's move
17:08were you a soldier here
17:12did you die here
17:15let's see this way
17:18were you a miner here
17:19do you see that dude oh i've never seen anything like that before
17:34oh oh my god do you see him
17:40black orbs
17:41in paranormal research some say orbs indicate the presence of spiritual energy
17:47not fully formed and these can be detected by the xls camera
17:51seeing a parade of orbs like this could suggest multiple spirits are trying to manifest
17:58kevin saw a legless apparition
18:00can you show yourself to me
18:13oh whoa whoa this oh my gosh i think i found some monkey
18:21that is textbook barbary macaque scat i think that is evidence that they are in here
18:29i'm gonna collect this sample to get analyzed because this could be some really significant
18:36evidence i cannot wait to tell heather what i found
18:43heather hey where have you been sorry i'm late but it was worth it here catch look what i found
18:52yes this is monkey poop look while you were out there pooper scooping i got a lot of activity in
18:58the hospital and we have a ton more ground to cover let's go find that cave in all right let's go fight it
19:06while excavating a new passage in 1941 a tunnel collapsed
19:13killing a british miner kevin believes could be the legless apparition he saw in the abandoned hospital
19:20having no luck at the hospital i'm hoping to communicate with that spirit
19:23at the site of the actual cave-in if we can find it
19:33oh water oh my goodness
19:40look at that that water is super clear this was filtered through the entire rock through the limestone down here
19:47oh oh my god did you hear that
20:00what was that
20:00it's not like it came from up there it goes back pretty far look we've been chasing noises all night
20:09we got to get up there okay let's uh let's helm it up
20:13look at all this rubble cave-in cave-in maybe it started further up
20:34all right it's pretty narrow up here
20:36looks like it opens up up here out there okay
20:59see that it's a tunnel excavated tunnel
21:02which intersects with this cave so you think this is the spot where that that miner was completely
21:08dismembered and killed could be the spot this is a great place to get answers
21:15brought the geophone with me so i can use this place into the rock and listen for these sounds
21:23that are emanating from the earth around us okay this is heather and phil we are where we believe
21:30the cave-in occurred starting our avp session okay
21:40is this where cave-in happened
21:47fallen fallen is there anyone here with us can you tell us your name
21:53low that sounds like a nickname to me maybe for lewis
22:07heather i'm getting this murmuring murmuring this is repeating i swear it almost sounds like a heartbeat
22:14a heartbeat
22:24is there anything you want to say to us
22:28chest chest chest were you crushed here
22:31are you the legless entity that people have seen in these tunnels is this where you died
22:42are you the mad monk
22:47castle
22:47is that where we need to go
22:53well just cut out
22:58it's just dead completely dead
23:02mine's about to die mine's a slow battery no way yeah i know we had fresh batteries in here the way i
23:09see it this is a sign of activity ghosts drain batteries as a source of power so that they can communicate
23:16with our gear batteries dying we can't collect more evidence tonight
23:21so we start heading back to the surface
23:30the next day intrigued by the castle response phil and i split up to gather more intel on the historic
23:35moorish castle which for centuries was a place of torture and torment
23:43i'm meeting with a local historian clive finlison who is the director of the gibraltar national
23:48museum and an expert on the moorish castle's dark and disturbing history
23:54there are so many miles of tunnels in the rock of gibraltar do they connect to the moorish castle at all
24:00yeah everything is interconnected the moorish castle has had many many functions over the years
24:07but the thread that links all these throughout is is it was a place of suffering and in many cases
24:14cruelty what types of cruelty some of the women were kept in black holes
24:21deserters people trying to escape would be hanged
24:24and what they would do is they would hang them in the gallows inside the prison
24:31and then from there you take them to a lime pit oh lord so you you put the body in the lime and the
24:37lime would burn or eat a whale with flesh
24:43and what they would then do is crush the bones put them in a leather container and put them in the wall
24:48of the castle wait a second are there remains still in the walls oh yes can you see them you see the
24:57little plaques on the walls which mark where they are they're just behind there so if we're trying to
25:02understand the full picture of gibraltar it seems like we have to go to the moorish castle i would say
25:07it's essential while heather meets with the historian i'm heading straight to the moorish castle which is
25:13currently being restored to speak with a witness about mysterious activity he's seen there douglas
25:20ottard was a night watchman here for decades before the modern version of the prison finally closed in 2010.
25:28what was it like working here it was okay during the day it wasn't during the night
25:32so i heard sounds every night especially down here where they used to hang the inmates
25:37so uh what happened down here is i was doing my rounds in the isolation wing where we had a number
25:45of inmates one of them stopped me i said would you please tell the guy on the cell down the bottom to
25:52stop banging and kicking the door and everything and i told him there's just no one there
26:00this prisoner was was hearing someone below him trying to get out there was no one there
26:07actually a few years back one of the inmates did hang himself there which the inmate did not know
26:13about i was scared but i couldn't unlock him so he must have been even worse than me
26:20are you the only one who's had experiences like this here no my nephew was working here for this
26:26construction company he says he saw this guy passing outside the door with a long gray coat with a beard
26:33and he says good morning sir he didn't answer he just went past but he knew he shouldn't be there so
26:43he goes out and there's no one there so what did your nephew do he never came back he quit yeah
26:51i never came back they were doing construction what are the chances someone else could have walked
26:55through while he was working it was quite secure how does it feel being back here after all these years
27:00it is scary it's something that stays with you all the time i'm sure you're going to have experience
27:06i'm sure of it guaranteed
27:16just after sundown i rendezvous with phil at the marsh castle now that i know it's linked with the tunnels
27:21inside the rocket gibraltar i'm eager to figure out what sort of paranormal connections the two sites might
27:26share
27:32hi heather so these are the isolation cells this is where the worst of the worst prisoners were kept
27:41i'm wondering if what people are calling the mad monk that they've seen in the tunnels is actually a
27:47hooded executioner because how many executions took place in the moorish castle probably hundreds thousands
27:54right and not only that look at all these signs of renovation this is going to make them angry
28:00because you're disturbing their resting place we need to be careful okay so where are the gallows
28:06gallows are right underneath the scaffolding that side of the wall all right i'll find my way there stay
28:11safe you got it
28:19this is where hundreds of people were hanged in this exact spot this is a great place to start our
28:25investigation
28:29this is an elimination case it is not touch sensitive the lights will not go off from touch
28:35it uses ir sensors
28:40so if anything is moving around here even something we can't see those lights will go off and it's set
28:45up in the exact spot where the gallows was press and record it's recording
28:51this is heather i'm recording at the gallows can you make the case light up
29:07oh my god
29:12something's here with me
29:12are you that mad monk apparition or are you the executioner
29:32oh my god oh it's going off it's going off like crazy yeah
29:42you're not a monk at all you're the executioner
29:50is that true yes yes yes yes oh my god so you move back and forth from the tunnels
30:00so this right here is a highly sensitive parabolic microphone now since we've been here a lot
30:18of the witnesses have told us reports of hearing unusual unexplainable sounds now even i can admit
30:25that when we were in the tunnel we heard some some unusual things
30:31i swear it almost sounds like a heartbeat
30:34so i'm hoping i can not only identify what the sound is but where that sound is coming from and maybe
30:41track it down
30:55so i've gotten quite a few high-pitched metallic hits
31:01some of them have been singular pings others kind of in a grouping
31:05a lot of it is coming from this direction and that direction
31:17oh whoa right down here sound like one of the doors was just slammed let's head down
31:24are you still here with me you just lit up like crazy
31:37clearly there's a lot of spirits in this place there's clearly a lot more to find
31:41i'm gonna leave the camera running and let's see what i get
31:54oh my god
32:03these are the remains these are the walls that are actually packed with the remains
32:09of prisoners what i'm looking at right now is a graveyard
32:19what could have caused that noise
32:24heather yeah i think i got something come here
32:31yeah
32:34where are you over here over here
32:38hey check this out look this is the lie pit this is the lie pit
32:44the lie pit to think of them just throwing decomposing bodies into this and then to be shoved into the walls
32:53oh i got chills
33:01did you hear that sound like something
33:03it sounded like a heartbeat
33:05it's coming from behind you
33:17i'm gonna take out my k2 meter see if i can get any readings
33:19so the k2 is what a emf detector oh
33:26is there anyone in here
33:40yeah okay just name it
33:43it's going off right in this area
33:45i'm not seeing anything that looks electrical running through here zero modern technology
33:53i mean we're going off like crazy here
33:56oh
33:59oh boy
34:10oh my god there's a room down there
34:17reports of ghosts have always been at the very heart of gibraltar's history but shockingly some of
34:23those ghosts might have had hearts too
34:27during world war ii the british navy initiated a top secret plan to turn a handful of brave soldiers
34:33into living ghosts hiding within the rocket cell fearing germany would seize gibraltar the brits
34:40commissioned a hidden underground tunnel complex that would see six men secretly sealed in the rock
34:47for up to seven years spying on the germans from within
34:50who helped come up with this audacious plan
34:55ian fleming who would go on to create legendary spy james bond
35:00luckily those six courageous souls did not become living ghosts as the germans never invaded but it
35:06wasn't all for nothing the plans at least seemingly inspired the layers of various bond villains
35:20ian fleming
35:24oh holy you think i can make it down there no that is a drop
35:30there's a letter right there let's use a letter grab it
35:34ian fleming
35:46gentlemen first
35:47oof
35:48what
35:48i'm trying to squeeze in here
35:56all right
35:56oh wow
35:58is it a big room it is so well preserved down here this is incredible you think it's part
36:04of the prison i can't tell we gotta see it okay
36:08okay
36:15this is incredible
36:20check the key to it
36:22holy spike still spiking
36:25the tunnels are connected to the castle
36:47you hear that
36:48this is
37:00heather and phil deep underneath the prison in the morris castle is there anyone here with us
37:12is the executioner with us
37:18heather and phil continued to search for the sound they heard
37:42moving deeper and deeper down tunnels that took them back under the rock of gibraltar
37:48they never found the source but it was as if whatever they heard was leading them back
37:52into the mountain's dark heart
37:56during their unprecedented expedition inside the rock the team investigated many of its strange secrets
38:04oh my god
38:07what the is that was that you the phantom breath heather heard in the generator room was analyzed
38:13it can only be detected on heather's microphone
38:17and it doesn't match her breathing could the notorious spirit known as the mad monk
38:24have been literally breathing down her neck
38:28what the was that was that you
38:31and it wasn't just the sounds of potential spirits that put the team on edge
38:35it was the sound of the rock itself
38:37i swear it almost sounds like a heartbeat heather feels this is evidence that her stone tape theory
38:46is correct the limestone of the rock seemingly recording the thousands of lives lost here
38:52immortalizing their heartbeats can you tell us your name hello that sounds like a nickname to me and the
39:00name heather identified in her call and response led to a shocking connection lieutenant colonel
39:06lawrence bolton was a british officer who died in the 1941 cave-in
39:12is this proof that he is the legless apparition frequently witnessed
39:16forever trapped in the mountains endless tunnels
39:19not everything the team discovered would lead to an eerie connection catch look what i found
39:27is this yes this is monkey poo the scat phil found and threw in the world war ii tunnels
39:36was confirmed as primate suggesting at least some of the rock's strange encounters
39:42really are just plain old monkey business
39:46but there was one more piece of remarkable evidence and it concerns the rock's most infamous
39:52ghost the mad monk heather now believes she's uncovered his true identity a hooded executioner
39:59who once ended lives at the moorish castle are you the executioner oh it's going off it's going
40:07off like crazy potential proof of the mad monk would come weeks later as heather analyzed our footage
40:15reviewing the camera left behind in the generator room where the monk is often reported heather found
