00:00What the hell am I looking at?
00:02With help from their own cutting-edge canine companion.
00:05All right, Rover, Doc. You got my back?
00:08Heather and Phil will search for proof of the vampiric beast.
00:11If you have blood running through your veins, there's cause for alarm.
00:15Oh, my God, it's running.
00:16But they'll find that catching a horrifying hellhound
00:19is not as simple as just saying fetch.
00:24Holy s***. He just got knocked over.
00:30All right, Gates. I got a story to pitch, but I know what you're going to say.
00:40What am I going to say?
00:41He's going to say, oh, my word.
00:43He says that a lot.
00:44Hey, there's nothing wrong with the catchphrase, Phil. You should try it sometime.
00:48Come on, pitch me. What is it?
00:49The chupacabra.
00:50Oh, I do love the chupacabra, legendary blood-sucking creature,
00:54but we investigated this in Puerto Rico where the story started,
00:58and it just didn't stand up.
01:00It felt like a combination of recent folklore and some wild dogs.
01:04I knew you were going to say that,
01:05but would it change your mind if I said there was a specimen?
01:08A specimen?
01:09Wait, someone has a physical chupacabra?
01:12Yes.
01:12A doctor in Texas says she found a dead chupacabra,
01:16had a taxidermy, and checked this sucker out.
01:19Oh, my word.
01:21See?
01:21It's good.
01:22That is seriously creepy.
01:24Look at that.
01:25Okay?
01:25It does still kind of look like a dog, kind of.
01:29But the fur, or lack thereof, is definitely unusual.
01:33And here's the thing.
01:34She says that this chupacabra broke into her chicken coop,
01:37killed her chickens, leaving puncture wounds and no blood.
01:41Okay.
01:41A literal bloodsucker.
01:43Mm-hmm.
01:44Okay, so could it be that this legendary blood-sucking beast is on the loose in Texas?
01:54The chupacabra legend begins on the island of Puerto Rico in 1995.
01:59The territory is shocked by a series of disturbing attacks on livestock.
02:05Hundreds of goats are killed in the dead of night.
02:08The goats are found with two massive puncture wounds to the neck and their blood completely drained.
02:14As rumors of this blood-sucking beast spreads across the island,
02:18the locals name the monster chupacabra, or goat sucker.
02:23In 2019, I went to Puerto Rico to investigate the mysterious murders.
02:29Oh, my word.
02:31Look at this.
02:33One, two, three, four chickens.
02:34Sweet.
02:35And they were in these pens.
02:37This was ripped open here.
02:37So whatever did this not only ripped back all this wire,
02:41but actually bent back the corrugated metal.
02:43But since then, suspected chupacabra attacks have not only continued,
02:47they've spread to mainland America.
02:50Thousands of chickens, goats, and cattle have been found dead in Texas,
02:54with puncture wounds and their blood drained, just like in Puerto Rico.
03:00There have been possible sightings, too.
03:02Texans from San Antonio to Houston report terrifying,
03:06hairless, vicious, four-legged beasts that are unlike any known canine.
03:11In 2010, a woman in Texoma claims she is savagely bitten after discovering a chupacabra lurking inside her camper.
03:21Years later, a family near the town of Victoria allegedly shoots and kills one of the animals
03:27after hearing its terrifying howl near their livestock.
03:33Experts believe the epicenter of this activity is near the small town of Cuero, Texas,
03:38where ranchers report seeing the elusive creature more frequently than anywhere else in the state.
03:44But what exactly is the mysterious chupacabra?
03:48Some believe it's a lab experiment that escaped and bred.
03:52Others say it's the accelerated evolution of a common predator, like a wolf or coyote.
03:58And one wild theory states this could even be some kind of vampiric extraterrestrial,
04:04somehow living on Earth.
04:05Is the chupacabra really stalking the Texas Badlands?
04:10And is it still thirsty for blood?
04:18Guys, this is a really compelling case.
04:20It's not Puerto Rico.
04:21It's an all-new location in Texas.
04:24And we might have a real specimen on our hands.
04:27And not only that, this is not some ancient legend.
04:29These sightings are happening right now.
04:31Yeah.
04:32And this Texas part may be key to what I think could really be happening there.
04:37There are wolves, coyotes, feral dogs all found in this region.
04:40And canids can be afflicted by conditions like mange and rabies
04:44that not only drastically alter their appearance,
04:46but also can make them behave in very disturbing ways.
04:49So, the big question, is it something known or something unknown?
04:53That's what we have to figure out.
04:55And to do that, there's a new piece of technology I think would be perfect for this case.
04:59Here, boy.
05:01What?
05:05Come on up.
05:08Come on up.
05:11Phil, what the hell am I looking at?
05:13What is this?
05:14This is a robotic quadruped.
05:17And Josh, say shake.
05:18Shake?
05:21Right?
05:22Oh, my word.
05:23What are you going to do with this thing?
05:25I mean, maybe it takes a dog to catch a dog.
05:27This thing has 360-degree laser-scanning 3D mapping LIDAR.
05:32It has autonomous AI.
05:34And because it's a robot, it has no scent.
05:37So it can go places that we can't go and do it relatively undetected.
05:42Okay, so, RoboDog.
05:44Yeah.
05:44No, no.
05:45What?
05:46It needs a way cuter name than that.
05:48And can I teach some tricks?
05:49Heather, this is not a toy.
05:51This is a scientific investigatory tool.
05:54This is a dystopian nightmare.
05:56Don't listen to them.
05:57You're not a tool and you're not a dystopian nightmare.
05:59All right, you two, time to go walk the dog.
06:01See if you can catch a real-life chupacabra.
06:04And you, down boy.
06:09The flight from New York to Austin is four and a half hours.
06:12Then it's another two-hour drive southeast to the quiet Texas town of Cuero,
06:17where Heather's witness claims to have found a chupacabra corpse on her property.
06:22It's a real Texas ranch land.
06:30So excited.
06:31We got the chupacabra and we got RoboDog.
06:34Hey, you know what would make a good doggy treat for the chupacabra?
06:37What?
06:38Blood sausage.
06:39Oh, gosh.
06:40Hey, you know what would make a good treat for RoboDog?
06:42What?
06:43Double-A batteries.
06:44Ah.
06:45You're rubbing off on me.
06:46These stupid dad jokes.
06:48That wasn't stupid.
06:49That was pretty good, Heather.
06:50That's how I know it was bad.
06:52This is it.
06:58Dr. Canyon.
07:00Hi, how are you?
07:01Hi, so nice to meet you.
07:02Rancher Dr. Phyllis Canyon has hunted animals all over the world,
07:06but says the strangest creature she's ever encountered was terrorizing her own backyard.
07:12So tell me, what happened the first time you saw it?
07:14It was nighttime.
07:16I'm driving into the ranch.
07:17This animal stands up on all fours and looks at me.
07:24I stopped and got out of my car.
07:27Never have I seen anything as bizarre as this animal.
07:34It just stood there looking back at me.
07:38That's what scared me, because this thing did not look friendly.
07:44And then eventually it just trotted off into the pasture.
07:49Could it have been a coyote?
07:51Absolutely no.
07:53This was definitely not a coyote.
07:55I've lived on a ranch all of my life, and I've never seen anything that looked like this, ever.
08:01Were you concerned at all?
08:03Well, yes, I was concerned, because we have so many animals on the ranch.
08:07I went down to my chicken coop, and sure enough, the chickens had been killed.
08:14But what made it so strange was how they were killed.
08:18These chickens had no blood.
08:21Pulled on the ground, in the chicken, nothing.
08:24And the carcass was left whole.
08:28It's almost like this animal sucked all of the blood out of them.
08:33Weird.
08:34And then it escalated.
08:38One day, I'm gone for 30 minutes.
08:41Came back.
08:42Not only did this animal kill another chicken, it put it on my back porch with no blood.
08:51That's a threat.
08:51This was a threat, because to lose one was one thing, but all told, I lost 29 chickens.
08:5929 chickens?
09:0029.
09:00So at this point, you wanted to get this thing.
09:03I said, you ****, you're going to be hanging on my wall at some point.
09:08So I have the real thing.
09:09And if you want to see it, let's go.
09:11I'll show it to you.
09:12Let's take a look.
09:18Oh, my goodness.
09:23What?
09:25Look at that thing.
09:26This is the animal that I had been seeing on the ranch.
09:30And then you decided to have it taxidermied.
09:32I did.
09:32I had to preserve it.
09:34But this, we don't know what it is.
09:36All canines have four nipples on each side, male or female.
09:42This one only has two.
09:44It does not have hair on it, but it's covered in fuzz.
09:49And we did skin punch biopsies to determine if it had any kind of skin infection.
09:56And it was all negative.
09:57Come on.
09:58Yeah.
09:59Everything about this is strange.
10:02It looks like it has extra skin over the ears.
10:06Blue eyes?
10:07Did it actually have blue eyes?
10:08It did.
10:09Are these the original teeth, too?
10:11Yes.
10:12There is the Mexican hairless dog to show it adequately.
10:14Yes.
10:15And that same gene that causes them to be hairless also causes them to lose teeth.
10:19But it seems like it has all of its teeth.
10:22Yeah.
10:23This is one of the weirdest animals I've ever seen.
10:29And I'm assuming this is not the only one.
10:32Absolutely.
10:32Because we see them with frequency.
10:35When was the last time you saw one?
10:37About a month ago.
10:38Okay.
10:39So, very recent.
10:41So, if we're going to try to find this thing on your ranch, where should we look?
10:44The first place that I would send you definitely would be to the pond.
10:47Okay.
10:47Because we're the only pond in this area.
10:50So, it's the calling card for all animals.
10:53Do you mind if we take a DNA sample ourselves, do a quick examination of it?
10:57No problem.
10:58And one more thing.
10:59We know it likes chicken.
11:02Can we borrow a chicken?
11:04I promise to return it safe and sound with all of its blood intact.
11:08No problem.
11:09Thank you very much.
11:10Appreciate it.
11:11Thank you so much, Dr. Cannon.
11:13After collecting a skin sample, it's time to hopefully track down a living specimen for ourselves.
11:19First, we need to lure it in, and I want to put poultry on tonight's menu.
11:24So, when we were in France, we had pretty good luck using Mr. Clucky to lure in the beast of Gauvedon.
11:30The chicken that you took about, what, 30 minutes to catch?
11:33It was not that long.
11:34My watch said otherwise.
11:35Heather, this time it's your turn to catch it.
11:47Okay.
11:48I'll show you how it's actually done.
11:49Listen, I got chickens at home.
11:51When you get in there, they're going to be running all around.
11:53You're going to have to scramble to get one.
11:54Mm-hmm.
11:55See what you got?
11:56Okay.
11:57Oh, that's cheap.
11:59Mealworms?
12:00Is it?
12:01Or is it just knowledge?
12:03Hello, girls.
12:05Hello.
12:10Oh.
12:12Oh, my goodness.
12:14Wasn't that easy?
12:16Okay.
12:17When I did it, it was nighttime.
12:19I didn't have mealworms, and there were roosters.
12:21Sure.
12:23All right.
12:23Whatever you say.
12:24Stop showing off.
12:25Let's go, Miss Henny.
12:27With our fair-feathered decoy safely secured,
12:30we set out for the pond on the far side of Dr. Canyon's property,
12:34where she had her alleged Chupacabra encounter.
12:39Ooh-hoo-hoo-hoo.
12:41Wow.
12:43This is the thick brush.
12:45Yeah.
12:46Clearly, there's a lot of shelter around.
12:49We're heading to the water, and we're bringing the food.
12:52We've got everything that Chupacabra needs.
12:54GPS says just a little bit farther up.
12:57Yes.
13:01Okay.
13:02We made it.
13:03This is it.
13:05Chupacabra country.
13:08Activating autonomous patrol.
13:10Be careful out there, Robo-Dog.
13:12The only water for miles.
13:23Look.
13:24Animals already coming in for a drink.
13:26If we're going to find this thing, this is the spot.
13:29You know what that means.
13:30Time to bust out, Robo-Dog?
13:31Let's do it.
13:32Yes.
13:32The Unitary Go-To Pro, a.k.a. Robo-Dog, isn't just a good boy.
13:38He's a smart boy.
13:40With an onboard 4K camera, a LiDAR sensor to avoid obstacles,
13:44and an AI-powered surveillance mode,
13:47allowing this high-tech hound to patrol a perimeter with the push of a button.
13:53All right.
13:54Can I get it cleaned off?
13:55Before deploying Robo-Dog on his first mission,
13:59I wipe him down to remove any human scent that might alert wildlife.
14:03I also attach a thermal cam to help detect any creatures lurking in the brush
14:07to try to up our chances of catching a so-called Chupacabra.
14:11Then Heather and I get to work setting up a perimeter of cameras and sensors
14:15along the pond and its surrounding brush,
14:18signaling us if anything approaches for a drink.
14:21Okay.
14:22I'll be starting at the north end of the thicket
14:24and working my way south,
14:26hoping to flush out anything hiding in the trees
14:28right towards Heather and Robo-Dog.
14:31Meanwhile, Heather will monitor the pond from the south end.
14:34With Miss Henny as our brave feathery decoy
14:36and Robo-Dog on duty too,
14:39our unlikely team is as ready as we can be
14:41for whatever's prowling the night.
14:43Give me the remotes.
14:45I'll make sure Robo-Dog and Miss Henny are set.
14:46Okay.
14:47Before we split up, let's remember,
14:49something killed 29 of Dr. Kannon's chickens.
14:52By all accounts, there is a mysterious predator out here,
14:56so be careful tonight, okay?
14:57Okay.
14:58Good luck.
14:59Stand walking.
15:00Copy that.
15:07First things first,
15:08we got to make sure Miss Henny is taking care of.
15:11Hello, girl.
15:12There's some water
15:14and a nice little snack for you
15:17just in case you want some.
15:21You're set.
15:23All right.
15:24Come on, Robo-Dog.
15:29I got a pretty sweet setup here.
15:31I am looking at what Robo-Dog is looking at,
15:33so I've got a LiDAR scan of everything around him,
15:36I have a live feed from his video camera,
15:37and then on this screen,
15:39I actually have a thermal feed.
15:41And not only that,
15:42I've got the remote sensors,
15:44so that if anything is heading from the pasture,
15:46I'm gonna know.
15:48All right, Robo-Dog,
15:50you got my back?
15:52Okay.
15:53Activating autonomous patrol.
15:57Be careful out there, Robo-Dog.
15:59Robo-Dog.
15:59Okay, we've made it to the far north end
16:12of the decade,
16:13which means Heather and the pond
16:15and Robo-Dog are far to the south.
16:19Look down.
16:20Check this out.
16:20This is a heavily used game trail
16:23going straight into it,
16:25so I figured if I move in kind of a zigzag pattern,
16:28I might be able to flush anything towards Heather.
16:31I'm gonna get out the flare,
16:33which would help us see through the dense brush
16:35much further.
16:42So far in front of us looks clear.
16:45Let's get moving.
16:53Robo-Dog has a great view of the pond right now
16:56and a lot of the shore.
16:58So far,
16:59no animals.
17:04He's moving, though.
17:06He's definitely watching my back.
17:15Okay.
17:16Found clearing.
17:17This would be a good place
17:22to ambush prey.
17:24There's not a lot of cover.
17:27Did you hear that?
17:31Can't tell if it was the wind,
17:33but it seemed like there was something moving back here.
17:36Let's move slow.
17:38Let's get closer.
17:38I don't want to stare away there.
17:50Right, right.
17:52Look at that.
17:53Right there.
17:54There's a hot spot.
17:57Right there.
17:57Just moved off.
18:07Oh, there.
18:12Look at that shape.
18:15It has a strong arch in its back.
18:17We're just going to move quick and see if we can get eyes on it.
18:20I don't see it on the fleer anymore.
18:43It was right here.
18:52Let me just check this old perimeter.
18:58Oh.
18:59Oh, look at this.
19:03Look at that.
19:05That looks almost like a little claw marks.
19:10Let me get the 3D scanner out.
19:11As you can see the edge of the pad,
19:18it looks like one, two, three, maybe four little claw marks.
19:22Looks like it's heading in that direction, which is...
19:27south.
19:29That's where Heather is right now.
19:31Heather, Heather, you copy?
19:34Yeah, what's going on?
19:35There was an animal that we just got on the fleer
19:37that had a hunched back.
19:39It had a hunched back?
19:40Yes.
19:42It is heading due south.
19:44Wait, towards me?
19:45Yes, towards you.
19:47I'm getting closer to your position.
19:49Let me know if you see anything out there.
19:50I'll meet you there.
19:52Copy that.
20:03Phil!
20:03Phil, we've got activity on the motion sensors.
20:08I think you're right.
20:09It's heading my way.
20:10Let's move.
20:11Let's go.
20:11Let's go.
20:21Did you see anything?
20:22No.
20:23The motion sensor just went off.
20:24Right back there?
20:25Yeah.
20:26I think we're going to send Robodog over there
20:28and see if you can pick up anything.
20:29Okay.
20:29Let's do it.
20:32All right.
20:33Let's go get it.
20:34So it's in domino mode.
20:36Let's check it out.
20:46How far are these motion sensors?
20:47Maybe two, three hundred yards.
20:51All right, Robodog.
20:52Let's see what you got.
20:55It's getting closer to the trees.
20:56Okay.
21:00Over there.
21:01Over there.
21:01Go to the right.
21:02Go to the right a little bit.
21:05Whoa!
21:08That.
21:08What is that?
21:11Oh, my gosh.
21:11It's just right in front of the Robodog.
21:14Look at that shape.
21:15It has that hunchback, just like I saw before.
21:18I think it might be the same thing.
21:21Look at the feet down here.
21:23There's nothing there.
21:24It must be behind the trees.
21:27Okay, let me get closer.
21:29Slowly.
21:32Oh, my God!
21:40Hold it.
21:41Hold it.
21:41Okay.
21:42What's going on?
21:45The brush is too dense.
21:49It's really thick over there.
21:51But we know that thing is right in front of it.
21:53Let's get out there.
21:54Okay.
21:54Let's move.
21:54Okay.
22:03Okay.
22:04There he is.
22:04Let me scan with it, Fleer.
22:09Anything?
22:10Not seeing any signatures right now.
22:13Doesn't mean it's not close.
22:16So it was facing this direction.
22:19Meaning whatever animal it saw would have been right here.
22:22Heading through that clearing.
22:23Okay.
22:24Let's go in.
22:29See it?
22:30I don't see anything.
22:32No eye shine.
22:35Where did you go?
22:39That sounded big.
22:47It sounded like it came from right over here.
22:49Oh, look at that.
22:50Look at that.
22:51What's that?
22:52There's a hot spot on that tree.
22:55What do you mean a hot spot on that tree?
22:57I don't know what it is.
23:00Oh, my God.
23:01Look.
23:02Did you see that?
23:05Am I looking at what I think I'm looking at?
23:07Yes.
23:08Looks like me.
23:09Some dirt was kicked up here, too.
23:13And look.
23:14The glow is basically gone.
23:16It's already cooled off.
23:18So that's fresh.
23:19Very, very fresh.
23:21The way the dirt is kicked up.
23:23And that being on the side of the tree, this is a territorial marking.
23:26Let's get a sample of it.
23:28You think maybe Roboduck made something assert its dominance?
23:31Whoa.
23:33That's kind of a wild theory.
23:34Maybe he was intimidated.
23:37I want to check on Miss Henny.
23:38But whatever did this, it's got to still be close.
23:41Let's keep looking for it.
23:42Okay.
23:43Knowing that this could have been left by our potential Chupacabra heat signature,
23:47I collect a urine sample and place a game camera at the tree.
23:52We retrieve Robodog and continue the search.
23:56But as the hours roll by and the sun begins to rise, our leads have dried up.
24:05The next morning, I head out to meet up with an old buddy of mine who has an interesting theory
24:10on the origins of this blood-sucking beast.
24:14Kid!
24:15Good to see you.
24:15So good to see you.
24:17Thank you so much for coming down to help us out.
24:19Absolutely.
24:20Always happy to help a friend.
24:22Chupacabra expert Ken Gearhart has compiled a wealth of evidence and eyewitness accounts
24:26across Texas, dating back to the creature's earliest reported sightings.
24:31I know you've been researching the Chupacabra for years.
24:33Walk me through what you think it is.
24:36Well, they seem to be grotesque-looking canids or dog-like animals.
24:41And of course, the great mystery at the root of it all is, are these animals actually drinking
24:47blood?
24:48That is an adaptation that we only see in very specific higher vertebrates, vampire bats.
24:54Yeah.
24:55So if suddenly we're seeing a strange type of evolution happening right before our very
25:00eyes, that's pretty miraculous.
25:02So why here?
25:03Why would there be this large population of strange animals in southeastern Texas?
25:07Well, one interesting theory that I've explored, Heather, is that these animals may be mutations.
25:13Clusters of these animals seem to be appearing near coal-burning power plants.
25:18Sulfur dioxide is one of the main emissions that these power plants put out.
25:22It's actually been proven that sulfur dioxide is a mutagen, which means it will alter the DNA
25:28or change the cellular structure of an animal, of a species.
25:32I know this sounds like the plot from a bad science fiction movie.
25:35Yeah, it's wild.
25:36But I think there's actually a chance that these toxins that are being put into the groundwater
25:40are genetically altering wild canids like coyotes and things like that.
25:45That could actually explain the grotesque appearance and the strange behaviors of these animals.
25:50If we do want to get close to this chupacabra, where should we look?
25:55I would say you need to be around water and stay near the power plants.
25:59I've actually heard there have been some very recent sightings around Caledo Creek.
26:03Okay.
26:04How do you suggest we go about it?
26:06Well, forgive me for stating the obvious, but we're trying to lure in something that drinks blood.
26:11And so it's all about using the right type of bait.
26:14But, you know, remember, these animals seem to be very brazen around people, and they're very hyper-aggressive.
26:20If you have blood running through your veins, I think that there's cause for alarm.
26:24So watch your back.
26:25Okay.
26:26Thank you so much.
26:27So good seeing you.
26:28Good luck, Heather.
26:29I'll need it.
26:30Okay.
26:32While Heather meets with her contact...
26:34Hey, Michael.
26:35Hey, Phil.
26:35Hey, good meeting you.
26:37...I travel to a nearby ranch and meet the owner, Michael Dimmel, who shares a photo of a mysterious creature, a trail cam caught at the edge of his property.
26:45Take a look at that.
26:51You ever seen anything like that before?
26:53What is that?
26:54I have no idea.
26:56It was something I'd never seen before.
26:58That is so bizarre.
27:01It's definitely not a coyote or a mangy dog.
27:04And I'd like to know what it really is.
27:06Yeah.
27:07We'll let you know if we find anything.
27:08The wilderness around this ranch is another potential chupacabra hotspot.
27:13So I tell Heather to meet me here to plan our next steps.
27:17All right, Heather, check this house.
27:19This is the photo I was telling you about.
27:21Look at that thing.
27:22Well, that's weird.
27:23Isn't that so bizarre?
27:27Where was this taken?
27:28You see these long posts right there?
27:30Yeah.
27:30This is underneath a deer feeder, which you can see right there.
27:34It seems like this thing was heading through the woods to the water.
27:39That is key.
27:40Ken mentioned water as well.
27:41And bear with me on this one.
27:43Uh-oh.
27:43Ken has a hypothesis that the coal plants that are near water are actually polluting the waterways
27:48and potentially causing a mutation in what would otherwise be normal wildlife.
27:52I mean, typically, those types of pollutants would cause things like cancer, which I guess
27:58could make something like a coyote go bald.
28:01But I would have to see a lot of evidence to back that up.
28:05Agreed.
28:05Regardless, it does seem like all signs point towards the water.
28:09So I think we should actually get on the water tonight.
28:12That'll give us the best vantage point.
28:13I think that's a great idea.
28:15Just one more thing.
28:16Yeah?
28:16This was Ken's idea.
28:18Is that blood?
28:19Yep.
28:20You should be so thankful that I actually went to the butcher and got us some.
28:24I figure we'll use it as bait.
28:25I mean, let's give it a shot.
28:28All right.
28:34There it is.
28:35It's a deer feeder.
28:36So this deer feeder will let out food at regular intervals throughout the day.
28:40Which will bring in all the deer, the hogs, and probably the things that want to eat them.
28:45Exactly.
28:45So this is where a predator would be waiting to come get prey.
28:50And potentially...
28:51There it goes.
28:59See?
29:00You weren't lying.
29:01That's the sound of the dinner bell.
29:02Ooh.
29:03My dinner bell sounds a little different.
29:06I've ever been scared by corn before.
29:08There it is.
29:09In case Michael's unusual creature returns for another midnight snack, we set up trail cams
29:16at the edge of the woods by the deer feeder.
29:18There we go.
29:19Can we try to sit?
29:20Yeah.
29:20Set in?
29:21All right.
29:22And start heading for the river.
29:24Right through here.
29:25See that?
29:25Yeah.
29:25Tonight, we're paddling Coleto Creek to an area downstream from a power plant, where several
29:34recent alleged chupacabra sightings have been reported.
29:37Oh, right here.
29:44All right.
29:44Using a canoe Michael has provided for us, we load up RoboDog's kennel, a.k.a. a gear
29:50case, and prepare to set out.
29:53Okay.
29:53Timing-wise, it couldn't be more perfect because it is about to be dusk.
29:57That is when the majority of animals will come to the river's edge to take a drink.
30:01We have incredibly good chances tonight of seeing something interesting.
30:04Before we head out, I'm going to pop the thermal drone in the air, set it in follow mode so
30:08it can actually track us as we go, and show us if there's any thermal hits on shore.
30:13Good idea.
30:13Something will have our back in the air.
30:15Yeah.
30:22Let's hit the water.
30:27All right.
30:31There we go.
30:34Drone is tracking us.
30:37You see anything, kid?
30:38No, not yet.
30:40But it's going to keep following us as we go.
30:42It's very quiet.
31:07That's not the thermal drone yet.
31:08I don't see anything, either.
31:20Oh.
31:21Nothing on the thermal drone.
31:23Oh, my God.
31:24It's running.
31:25Which direction?
31:26It should be right up there.
31:28Let's move it quick.
31:29Okay.
31:29Let's go.
31:29Let's go.
31:32It should be right up there.
31:33It should be right up there.
31:33What is that?
31:38What is that?
31:39Where'd it go?
31:41I don't see it.
31:44Where are you?
31:46It could be underneath us right now.
31:48Do you see any swimming?
31:50No.
31:52Nothing's showing up on the thermal drone.
31:53I think probably because it went underwater.
31:55That thing looked gray or darker.
31:58It didn't look like it had any fur.
32:03I know it sounds insane, but I kind of agree.
32:07Have you heard anything about these true recoveries?
32:09Swimming?
32:11Or being able to go underwater like that?
32:13Can canine swim?
32:14Shh, shh, shh.
32:20I'm still here moving.
32:24There is something back there.
32:28Do you see it?
32:29I don't see it, but it sounds f***ing huge.
32:35It's moving.
32:37I'm not seeing it on the thermal drone.
32:39The brush is too thick.
32:42I think it's gone up the ridge.
32:44It's just too steep for us to get off here.
32:48I'm trying to find a place down there.
32:49Copy that.
32:51We gotta get up there.
32:54Do you see a spot for us to land?
32:55I think right here.
32:56Up on the right.
32:57Okay.
33:01Okay.
33:02All right, I'm off.
33:03Okay.
33:08Whatever the hell we're hearing back there,
33:10it should be still right above that ridge.
33:12I think we need to get up there before we deploy RoboDog.
33:16All right, Heather.
33:16It's fine.
33:17Please land this drone.
33:18With a brush too thick for our thermal drone,
33:28an eye in the sky isn't as helpful as eyes on the ground.
33:32Once again, it's time to let RoboDog off his leash.
33:35Last night, we didn't want any scent on RoboDog,
33:37so he wouldn't scare any animals.
33:39They have our dogs included.
33:40But tonight, I'm thinking we'd try the opposite.
33:43You still have that jar of blood?
33:44Yeah.
33:46All right, what are you thinking?
33:48So, I want to take a rag,
33:50dip it in this fresh blood,
33:52and tie it around our little friend here.
33:54So, when we send it out into the world,
33:56hopefully some predator will smell that blood
33:59and come running straight at it to investigate.
34:02Time to be prey, RoboDog.
34:04Send him out.
34:05He's switching over to live feed now.
34:08Good luck, RoboDog.
34:09To a predator, the way it's stomping around
34:20and pushing through the grass,
34:21that sounds more like the desperate moves
34:23of an injured animal.
34:24Plus, it smells like blood.
34:27You can buy a lot of animals around here.
34:29You may become very curious.
34:33What?
34:33That was eyeshine right there.
34:34There was eyeshine.
34:38It was crouched down low.
34:40There is something watching it.
34:45Oh!
34:46Holy ****.
34:48He just got knocked over.
34:49By what?
34:55As we've heard,
34:56one popular origin story for the Chupacabra
34:58is that it's some kind of mutant dog.
35:01Disturbingly, there is evidence
35:03that this could be possible.
35:05Scientists say otherwise peaceful animals
35:07can transform when exposed to toxins,
35:10becoming dangerously aggressive.
35:13Perhaps the best example of this
35:14comes in the aftermath
35:15of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
35:18When the nuclear power plant exploded,
35:21humans were evacuated from ground zero,
35:23but thousands of animals remained.
35:25Analyzing these animals' genes decades later,
35:29scientists discovered that radioactivity
35:31had permanently altered their DNA.
35:34Hundreds of boars still roam Chernobyl,
35:36feeding on irradiated fauna.
35:38They've mutated,
35:39and according to returning locals,
35:41have become much more aggressive as a result.
35:44If these reports are true,
35:45then who knows?
35:47The Chupacabra really might have gone
35:48from man's best friend
35:50to man's worst enemy.
35:55Oh, I can't move it.
36:00It's flying the way out there.
36:01Let's go find it.
36:02I can't find it.
36:10Oh, my God.
36:15Careful.
36:15See if there's anything around on the flare.
36:21I'm not seeing anything around us right now.
36:24This other.
36:28I mean, it got completely knocked over.
36:31Get him up.
36:37You know what I'm wondering?
36:39What?
36:39How hard is it to knock this thing over?
36:41I think pretty hard.
36:42Oh.
36:43Oh.
36:44What?
36:47It catches his balance.
36:49Yeah.
36:49That is impressive.
36:51Whatever hit this
36:53must have hit it with a lot of force.
36:55That's not an accidental blow.
36:57That is an attack.
36:58Yeah, and if this thing was coming after the blood
37:00and thought it was going to eat,
37:01it's probably still prowling around.
37:03Yeah.
37:05Let's keep looking around.
37:06Yeah.
37:07Yeah.
37:14See new tracks?
37:34There's a bone right there.
37:35Oh, my God.
37:42There is.
37:43Look at that.
37:47Oh, my God.
37:49Look.
37:52Bones are all over the place.
37:53I think this was the horse.
38:08Are we in a Chupacabra feeding ground?
38:11We just might be.
38:16Now, Scattered Bones doesn't exactly match this Chupacabra's M.O.
38:20because there's not a whole dead animal lacking blood here.
38:24It doesn't mean something could have been picked apart afterwards.
38:27Look, and whatever ate that
38:30could have been whatever attacked Robodog.
38:33Obviously, I can't say that's a Chupacabra.
38:36But we know that something up here is carnivorous.
38:41All right, I'm going to collect some of these bones.
38:44Maybe they'll give us a better idea of what we've been chasing.
38:47Okay, so let's keep watching our backs here.
38:49Okay.
38:52Is the Chupacabra stalking the Texas Badlands?
38:55Heather and Phil found no further evidence of it that night.
39:01Holy ****.
39:03Robodog's attacker remains a mystery.
39:06Bones are all over the place.
39:07We were able to definitively identify the attacker of the dead horse we found.
39:12Toothpit analysis revealed it was devoured by a mountain lion, not a vampire dog.
39:18But some evidence we captured was harder to explain.
39:22Oh, my God, look.
39:23Looks like me.
39:25The urine sample Phil gathered after chasing a creature through Dr. Canyon's ranch
39:30was confirmed as canine.
39:32But the species could not be determined.
39:35Could it be another of Dr. Canyon's Chupacabras?
39:39That's a do.
39:40We sent the tissue sample Phil scraped from her taxidermied specimen to a genetics lab.
39:45And the results were fascinating.
39:47The animal's mother was a coyote, but its father was a Mexican wolf.
39:52That sheep has a strong arch in its back.
39:55But this creature looks nothing like either animal.
39:59So could the expert Heather spoke to be correct?
40:01Is an environmental factor somehow mutating wild dogs into hairless, blood-sucking beasts?
40:10If this bold claim really is the case, we should all be very concerned.
40:15While our many trail cams did not capture definitive footage of a vampire dog,
40:21they captured plenty of coyotes that, if you believe the theory, could one day become Chupacabras.
40:27The existence of the Chupacabra remains far from certain.
40:32But at least we can have canine confidence in one thing.
40:36Robo-Dog is a very good boy.
40:38I've been working on something real important.
